- For my 60th birthday my wife had secretly booked a four night stay in Fort William and also a trip on 'The Jacobite' . It was the first time since 1985 that I had visited the area and we spent two great days chasing the train to and from Mallaig before travelling on the last day. In this video I have included my only shot of the K1, No.62005 and several shots of class five, No.45231 in action between Fort William and Arisaig. The music over the opening scenes is 'Steam Train To Mallaig' by the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards.
Thanks to West Coast Rail and everyone involved with the running of 'The Jacobite' The video was filmed between 15th - 19th.July 2009
Excellent composition and first class photgraphy. The sight and sound of steam in beautiful scenery. Doesn't get better than this. Well done that man.
Great photography. Not just of the steam trains but also of the scenery. Some of the best I've seen. Thanks.Great job.
This, including the sequel, is so good it deserves an Award. I have thought that if ever we need to check if something is beautiful we should place it next to something that we know is beautiful. I think you have my point : the scenery, the engineering, the Pipes, the filming and the sound ..... .........
What a fantastic film, I can really appreciate the time and love put into this.
I have fantastic memories of going journey when I was 15 and the stunning scenery the train line runs through. I have shown this to my children and my 18month old son is transfixed! looks like we know our holiday destination next summer! Thanks again, brilliant footage that perfectly captures this incredible train and scenery.
Thank you very much, it's very nice to receive such a compliment from the operators. My thanks to you for making it all possible
Well done(again)!
This is a super film, very well produced and a pleasure to watch.
More please!
Dave
Before watching this video I wasn't a train lover but now it has changed I really like steam train. Thank you for this pleasant video :-)
I went on the Sherwood Forester steam train on the 29th June 2011 and filmed parts of the journey which I thought was great until I watched this video. It is the best Jacobite video I have seen. Great quality footage that has been well edited. Fantastic work.
What a great 60th present, I hope you thanked your wife.
Thanks very much, glad you enjoyed the video. I just couldn't ignore that beautiful scenery.
This is superb. The viaduct shot was brilliant. You were lucky with the weather
What a nice birthday present, very romantic and of course I've enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing
Excellent Austin, what a great birthday present from a very understanding wife..
Splendid! 5* Such beautiful scenery; certainly looks like time well spent. Thoroughly enjoyable compilation. Thank you for sharing. - Mike
One word............. Fantastic!
Cracking Austin! Looks like you had a fabulous week and some fantastic sun and the opportunity of capturing both engines! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did... and fantastic locations... 5* & Fav :)
Si
Thank you very much, glad to have made you a convert to the joys of steam!
Really nice put together video. Enjoyed watching it and look forward to the next part.
I actually took this trip last year. Your video brought back such found memories, plus, your video is MUCH better than mine is!
this is absolutley stunning!
Well Done! Favourited and rated!
Excellent. We were the support crew for the K1 that week. Great locations.
Stunning video. Just come across it, well done.
This is great! Beautiful views!!
Thanks very much, I would loved to have filmed the K1 all week, hopefully next year. You guys do a great job, keep it up.
very nice video. both parts 1 and 2 are excellent a nice vid to sit back and watch 5* and fav
In a word - excellent !
Thanks very much Ralph, Pam is 'Crewe built' and her Dad used to take her trainspotting on the station so its great that she shares my interest.
Thank you, we were very very lucky I think with the weather. When I was last there in 1985 it was rain and mist all the time.
Really really enjoyed watching both your videos. So good - it was almost like being there.. which is a long way away for me.
You got some v good panning shots & showed the romance to steam in an awe inspiring landscape to great effect. Posting in HD is so good!
The whole operation has such a professional feel about it - well I guess it is a regular service! If I had a few 100K spare I would get a turntable for Mallaig!! Maybe, one day!!!
Look forward to seeing your next years video.
Lovely job, Austin. The perfect holiday video. Some great locations, and good simple, steady camera work. It's 15 years or more since I went up there, but I hope to return this September for the Jubilee/K4/K1 long-weekend. 5*
Thanks very much Jeff, you should certainly do The Jacobite, one of the worlds great train journeys. I want to try and get up in the autumn for the foliage colour.
wonderfull video, thanks for posting,i hope to do this journey in the near future
Excellent video Austin. I'm hopeful of doing the Jacobite next year as I have never done it before.
Jeff
3:00 The Glennfinnan, where the Flying Car scene from Harry Potter was 'filmed'!! Thanks so much for sharing this! I was looking to go on this train ride, and now i want to even more!
Thanks very much Matt, I'm sure you can talk Sarah into going up there, so much to see and do besides the trains , the scenery is something else.
Absolutely brilliant! I'm going up in august as part of support crew! Cant wait!
What an excellent series of videos Austin. You're probably ready for another holiday after the work involved in downloading these. Very well done. 5*
Mike
My mum got me tickets for the Jacobite for my 17th, one of the best experiences of my life
That's great to hear. Once you've experienced it once you'll want to go back as often as possible!
Thank you, it's surprising what you can squeeze into five days. I hope you have a wonderful time
I (and the 7000 others) will look forward to that. I hope that Scottish Rail and Tourism have seen your work.
this is my dream rail journey Glenfinnan is so beautiful . Thank you for sharing it
Thank you very much, a great deal of planning did go into this so it is good that it seems to have paid off. I hope you have a wonderful trip, you certainly won't be disappointed.
Gosh how have I missed seeing these superb videos until now? Absolutely first class! Added to my favourites! thank you!
Thanks for your kind comments, much appreciated
Cheers Si, it was a great week and your location advice came in very useful. I never got near your 18 shots in a day record though!! Like you I can't wait to go up there again next year.
Thanks Steve, we were lucky with quite a bit of sunshine which makes that scenery look so beautiful.
Cheers Mike, It was a great few days and has whetted my appetite now for next year when we hope to go up for a bit longer.
Many thanks Mark, my last visit was in 1985 armed with my trusty sound cine camera !! I'm sure you will get some excellent shots in September.
Excellent video. We made the same trip last month (For about the 5th or 6th time) but didn't have time to get out along the route to shoot video like this. Fantastic sound too.
Thanks Chris, it is a must do trip, so good luck with 'management'. There are plenty of attractions besides the trains so you'll have no bother!!
A Fantastic Video! Nice work!
Many thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoyed the video and trust you enjoyed your trip on the train.
Thanks for your very kind comments, I'm glad your children enjoyed it too. I hope you get good weather when you go up as it makes such a difference and shows off the scenery so much better
Thanks very much, it was a wonderful surprise present as I hadn't been up there since 1985, now I can't seem to keep away!
I raise a bottle of ` Skull Splitter ` to you sir, brilliant footage !
great video, a group of ex forces (wrac) are heading to fort william for a reunion next april and hope to travel on the train. i have posted your video on their fb site to let them see how good it will be thanks again and well done fab
Superb you lucky devil. Nothing else to say! I'll show this to the boss and see if I can get any reaction. Chris
Thank you very much, I felt is was the right thing to do to try and show the both the wonderful landscape as much as possible
FANTASTIC VIDEO !
I can see that you went to a great deal of trouble to do this. Although we are going on this trip soon, there's no way we'd be able to get most of these shots! Many thanks.
Another magnificent video - I don't know how you manage to get as many good shots from what looks to be the best viewpoints on the line. Once again your photography and editing is first class.
quel belle région,super video,merci!!
lovely video, I am traveling on this train in May....can't wait :)
Thank you, I hope you enjoy your trip, I'm sure you won't be disappointed.
Thank you very much, glad you enjoyed the video.
I really want to live in Mallaig or anywhere on the West Highlands line when I am older. I live within the reach of South West Trains' suburban services so I generally don't get to see natural beauty such as this! Very well made video, it is obvious that you had put a lot of work into it (not many people do nowadays). I hope you had a great trip and a great birthday.
Thanks Sam, yes thanks it was a good few days we spent up there. That was five years ago now and we've returned several times to make more videos since then
Firstly Austin, can I wish you a belated Happy 60th Birthday, and Pam is spoiling you, but I expect you deserve it...ha..ha...An other faultless video in every respect, that morphing of 62005 into 45212 at the beginning was superb...a video to treasure without a doubt...5*+ Bob
Some excellent footage - well done.
Many thanks for your kind comments
Thanks very much
I think you definitely can. I have always felt 'at home' from the first time I visited Scotland and when researching family history, discovered my great great great grandfather had been born on the Isle of Skye. I am sure there must be something in the genes which makes you like a place
Fantastic places.
Next week I'll go to Scotland, but in 5 days I'll have no sufficient time to see all that..
Thanks very much Stuart, glad you liked it and enjoy part two.
Thanks very much Bob for your good wishes and very kind comments, we really want to go back next year, hopefully for a longer stay after noting possible photospots this time.
Thank you for your kind comments, I'm pleased you enjoyed the videos.
Thank you for your kind comments. I'm glad you enjoyed the video
Thank you very much for your very kind comments, I am pleased the video brings back so many happy memories for you. You may also enjoy a video I filmed in May this year during the first week of this years 'Jacobite' service.
Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks for your kind comments, glad you enjoyed it. You may also like the video I filmed in May 2011 during the first week of the Jacobite season
Thank you so much for your very kind comments. I'm going up to Fort William again in May so will hopefully have further videos to post of 'The Jacobite'
Hi Kaajal, I hope you will be able to take this wonderful journey, you will enjoy it. Loch Shiel can be seen on your left as you pass over Glenfinnan Viaduct. There is a view of the loch in my video last October of The Jacobite.
I'd love to be able to watch this edited to match the Bill Conti sound track for the gliding scene in the Thomas Crown Affair (Brosnan / Russo). Proper quality footage you have here. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, it was certainly worth the climb up to the viaduct and we were lucky not only with weather but also the midges were kind to us!!!
That's very kind of you, thanks for the comments.
Thank you for your very kind comments, it was memorable few days in beautiful Scotland. You might also enjoy a video I filmed of 'The Jacobite' last May
Thanks for your kind comments. The camera was a Canon HV30 with Rode Videomic. Just back from filming the first week of this years Jacobite, should be uploaded today. You'll have a great time when you go.
Why thank you kindly, I feel like a bottle or two of the old 'Skull Splitter' myself!
Thank you very much for your very kind comments. I'm pleased you enjoyed the video, I really enjoyed the few days I had in that beautiful part of the world.
I've been on this three times now by coming up from London. Well worth a visit especially if you stay in Spean Bridge!
Thanks for your kind comments and for posting the video on the WRAC's Facebook page. One thing to bear in mind is that 'The Jacobite' steam season doesn't start until May, perhaps they could delay the reunion for a month, although it's still a wonderful journey on the ordinary service trains
Thanks very much. With the train timings it is possible to get a shot between Fort William and Glenfinnan where there is a water stop of around half an hour. It is possible to get another, e.g at Beasdale in my video but it was very tight and the road does not really allow for high speeds.
Thank you for your kind comments, I'm pleased you enjoyed the video
Thanks for your comments, I'm sure you won't be disappointed when you travel on the line.
Lovely film first class what can I say that hasn't been said! 5* Brian
Thanks very much Dave, part two should be up later tonight and then I will bore everyone with some on board footage (from just behind the black five making a lovely noise)
Thanks very much Andy, I do a fair bit of 'homework' trying to find the best locations using Google maps etc., Most of the locations in the video are 'classic' locations for railway enthusiasts
Excellent stuff yet again. One Question though. Is it easy to chase the train from Fort William because it seems that the road follows the railway in some of the shots?
@acw71000 You are very welcome! Yes the weather makes a big difference but it looks incredible on a nice cold morning with the mist in the hollows and over the lochs. Incidentally what kind of camera did you use for this footage? Cheers.
Brilliant. Back in Mallaig in September 2011 for a week.
Great.
Really interested what recording equipment you were using?
Thank you very much Hugh for your very kind comments, I do love steam in the landscape shots. The service has run since 1984 now so is now like a well oiled machine. The Harry Potter connection is filling the trains too.
Finest rail journey in Britain I would say, if not the world! Thanks for your comments
Thanks very much, I'm sure you will have enjoyed your trip on 'The Jacobite' You might also enjoy my recent video filmed in May of this year in the first week of the 2011 season
