Had a similar problem with my Model A coupe hot rod. Turns out it was my new white wall tires were out of round. I remember in the old days tire shops had a machine that would cut off some rubber to make the tire perfectly round.
Ackerman, caster, camber, toe,. Check your shackles to see if they bottom out. Box must be adjusted with wheels off the ground. Make sure your tires are round and get them spin balanced. Looks scary !
watched this video this sunday am, thanks for the info on the VEGA steering box, my brand new one had as much play as yours. adjusted it and made a big difference. thanks, rr
Thanks for sharing the journey, Josh! Excellent job recording the motions of the suspension during the road-tests! That was very educational! Enjoy! Be safe! ('Still my favorite in your stable!) Bro Harry
Tires can do strange things, I'm building a 28/29 A pickup and i'm going to build the same parallel leaf suspension you have, for the front i'm dropping my own A axle, setting my front cross member at 7 degrees, i have not figured out what box i'm going to use, i have a mustang, corvair and a vega. so what ever fits nice i'll use, thanks for the video.
I'm a fan of cross steering. Vega or GM 525 boxes have worked good with me. The side steer boxes you need to have the arm setup with proper geometry to avoid bumpsteer. New wheels/tires are on now and drives good.
Firestone has made some very cheap tires in the past. Would not surprise me if the layers in the tires are starting to separate and its causing the shake.
Just a friendly heads up Don't mix radials on the front and bias on the rear...or vise versa. They do not play well together. Bias on all 4, or radials on all 4. Not trying to question your knowledge or anything, like I said... friendly heads up. Truck looks cool as hell.
Good choice. I’ve used low buck tires and regretted the results. I wonder if you are at the upper limits of the weight range for those Firestones. One bump or pothole can ruin those pretty fast.
Can't help but like the Model A Hot Rod Shop Truck especially when running without the hood closed... Let her rip next time when the new tires are installed. LOL
All Cars are money pits but you want to have them working right and safe ! Wheel match and thinking a belt may have let go ! good luck with new wheels and tires !
That go pro worked out fine. I could see the tire shake. They must have been bad tires to start with. Tires don't dry rot in two years. Mtbe you can bring them back to where you got them. They might give you a percentage back toward the new ones.
That truck should have had "steelies " on it from the start, those alloys didn't look right for the image you were going for. Always remember- if it's got tips or tyres, it's gonna cost you MONEY👍👍👍👍👍👍
It could be that one of your tires has apply separation, I had one and about drove me crazy and they want big bucks at the Goodyear or fire stone store to put it on their machine for fly separations comparing that price what’s the price of two new Michelin tires I want to know Michelin tires and it’s been great ever cents. 16:36
You really need to be running a front panhard bar or I guess it could be called a track bar when running a vaga style cross steer there are tons of articles on the HAMB about it. Some people will claim you need it some people will claim you don't but it definitely doesn't hurt anything and it is a guarantee fix for death wobble. Generally it ties from the passenger side of the axle to the driver side of the inner frame. The big plus side is you won't see it on a fendered car.
It was the front wheels/tires. Changed to new steel wheels and new tires and the problem was solved. I disagree with the panhard requirement. That would only help a transverse spring suspension with bump steer due to movement in spring shackles and the cross steer in a sloppy suspension. That differs from a car with coil overs that would require a bar as there is nothing to locate the axle side to side. Since I have a transverse spring and tight suspension no need for panhard. Truck drives straight and true now and have put 1500 miles on it with new wheels/tires with absolutely no wobble.

Awesome job 👍

The front end is set up correctly. It was the tires/wheels. Switched to new tires and wheels and completely cured it.

Thanks Harry. I put the cheaper camera on just in case. New wheels and tires did fix it. Truck is back in action.

Yeah, not impressed with them at all. Shakes and dryrot after 2 years and about 1000 miles.
Oh man sloppy box Sunday. You take care of thart sloppy box and enjoy them new wheels and couple tires. Positive note, you didn't lose a GoPro. :)
No sloppy boxes here! Steers good and don't shake with the new wheels and tires so I'm happy with it again!
Just a friendly heads up

I know that. Didn't mix radials and biasplys. Truck has always run radials.
Good choice. I’ve used low buck tires and regretted the results. I wonder if you are at the upper limits of the weight range for those Firestones. One bump or pothole can ruin those pretty fast.
Yeah, I don't know. Truck only weighs about 2900 lbs so doubt it on weight. Other people have complained about the Firestone 560 vibrating.
Can't help but like the Model A Hot Rod Shop Truck especially when running without the hood closed... Let her rip next time when the new tires are installed. LOL
New wheels and tires installed and it runs great now! No shaking at speed.
COOL

Agree. Cool cars, danger, and bankruptcy all go together!

I bought them thru Speedway. They are a cheap Firestone made in Mexico. I read on the HAMB that other people had shaking issues with them ad well.
1/8" toe in, and 7 degrees of caster should be good. Tires and wheels need to be round. I used Coker 600x15, Firestone Deluxe Champions, on the front.
It was the wheels/tires. I bought new steel wheels and BFG tires and it fixed it.

I kind of wanted a magnesium dished mag look, but the steel wheels do look good!

It was either the wheels or the tires. I ordered new wheels and small BFG T/A tires and that solved the problem.

Coffee can and chalk
It was wheels/tires. Changed to new tires and steel wheels and that fixed it.
pie cut bones to add caster, 6 degrees minimum
I set it up with 10 degrees when I built truck. It was the wheels/tires.
caster
No, had 10 degrees of caster. It was wheels/tires. New ones installed and zero shakes in 2000 miles since then.
Balance your tires guy
They are balanced. Cheap junk Firestones. Dryrotted after only 2 years parked indoors! Junk.
