Before it was half way done, I was in tears. My grandfather was at Normandy, when he told me about running across the beaches, finding his cousin dead in the sand, about how scared he was as an 18 year old straight out of the woods of Maine, I cried for the sweet hearted old man that raised me and helped me be the person I am today.
I try to make my daughter understand how important it is to listen to the stories of our grandparents and great grand parents. In all of history, they have been the ones to witness so much change and still be here to tell the younger generations. World Wars, depressions, the automobile, mainstream electricity and technology, the good and the bad.
Those who witnessed such events are leaving us and it's important to keep those stories alive.
That is very sweet.👍👍👍👍👍
This is my understanding of this animation. The soldiers in this are made of paper to represent their lives. As they are killed, their stories burn and are destroyed as they are forgotten with the other thousands of deaths. The two boys are not really there. The animation takes place in their imagination as they read their grandfather's (or whatever he is to them) account of the battle he was in (which i believe is D Day but that is a guess). Their grand father is the only human soldier because they know him more as a person then they do the people, which they see as stories. There is a lot of symbolism in this that I have probably failed to see, but hoped this helped or was interesting.
this is a very good description but I think the letters were from their father who was a soldier and passed away their grandfather took them out of their imajination to reality
True
It was...
They were reading the letter which the grandpa had written when he was in the war they acted as if they were there because it was so detailed, the grandpa didn't like the war and didn't like talking about it...
The End.. 😢
omg thx cos im learning about this thx alot

This gave me goose bumps... so many goose bumps.
Kyle Li why? its one of the wierdest things ive ever seen
Robbie Rotten cause our boys on the front dont get to run its not their luxury and they know that.
Robbie Rotten and as time goes on the next generation will forget about the ww1 & 2 generation and their sacrifices on all sides and being in military families it hits the heart like a bag of bricks.
You didn't miss a beat with this one. Such incredible attention to detail and touching subject.
Fantastic, I understood it, as my Grandfather had his box, I found his letters to my Grandmother during WW2. full of hope,, love and pain, as he said it, another mate for St Peter. Later letters he just said, Alf, Mike (old John's lad, Butcher, from Entwistle St,) Bert, and Paddy, Pearlies got them ( meaning the Pearly Gates), all those letters home, some from their commanding officers. Some scribbled by the chaps themselves, left in they're gear, in case they never came back. Very deep, it deserves the reward.
If you are in a military family, you know how shocking a chapter like this is in your life, to understand and realize what they've been through
I look at this and I weep for the youth of this world doesn't truly know what their great great-grandfathers and great great great grandfathers went through as the climbed into those landing boats that was to take them ashore where some would be gun down as soon as the ramps dropped. Soldiers of US Army, British Commandos, Canadian Army, US Coast Guard, US Navy, US Air Force and RAF all took part in Operation Overload on the 6th of June, 1944 to liberate France from the German occupation.
We have been using this in my year 6 class for inspiring war poetry. The class loved it and sit spellbound every time we show it. They are writing their poems as I type. Thanks for the inspiration.
Same
Done mine year 9

I only understood some, and it was beautiful, seriously, I loved every minute of it...
The horrors of war...
Bravo !
This is a lovely animation, very sad. Great for schools who are studying WW2 for a context.
This concept is amazing! Great work!
One of the best animations I've seen in my entire life. You deserved to win!
I watched this in primary. Best thing ever
Me too man
And we are both gatg creators what a coincidence
Encore bravo.
Heros beyond the Lines... I realize how often we forget them...

Well done ESMA. A lot of symbolism which can be interpreted many ways. Such as last letters home to loved ones, that may have never reached them. Too many things I seen in this to list out here. But, you did very well with this animation. War is hell, it comes with heavy price. But sometimes you just have to stand your ground no matter the price.
Magnifique vraiment...
There are some that make me cry
ya
My twin brother is a medic. He has been in Afghanistan for months and he told me what he saw on war. War is a horror. That animation shows it perfectly.
We are doing a story about this clip in my school, and I understood this very well! It's overall just a brilliant , mini story.
I’m doing a story on this animation at school as well
So am I!
the soldiers are made of all their letters, it's really depressing
I luv ur profile pic
It’s what the notes say of all the dead pleople and plus to cover the blood because some people can get really scared if there’s blood it would be a bit groosm wouldn’t it! :3
@@thepurplecat4272 XD same
J’ai encore pleuré! BRAVO!!!
Letter of history, letter of life. I will cry. Can not get used to the war.
I watched this in yr 6 and now I'm in yr 8 I'm crying so hard after finding this
What an amazing animations and message.
It's so beautiful and sad. It's really good!
This make me wanna cry

The papers supposedly making up their faces are the letters that they write home to their family in the times of the war for anyone that didn't understand
Magnifique ! Bravo !
OH MY GOD this is amazing love how the soldier where latter's to home great story good job
Bel hommage à ses personnes... magnifique message , profond... 👍 bravo

Try watching in 0.25 speed. SO GOOD
Wow....Just....WOW
Beau film, j'aime ça. Merci
C'est une belle animation. Continuez comme ça.
Simple mechanics the note people are people's life story's and the flying notes mean the death of someone's life...
C'est vraiment sympa et original !
Very innovative idea and excellent execution :)
You don't need to speak French to understand the depth of this video congratulations that was not easy!
Ok i understand this video but i had this on at school.

Good work keep it up
This is my favorite movie from ESMA movies I love is I love war things
It's England you can tell by the helmets and the packs, its. a excellent short.
Well its not just English Soldiers there could be French ones too, which is probably why the letter and the audio is in French.
We watch this in my class
odd notice of detail, but every paper soldier is using an M4A1 Paratrooper(I might be wrong) but the not paper soldier is using a Thompson
i observe he is using BAR thompson rifle and the paper soldiers are using M1A1 Carbines
Powerful and sad!
i love it
captures life as a soldier
