Ref 2:02, went up the ladders in 2019. Climbing the new ladders are quite easy compared to the old ladders. However, getting up to the ladders is another matter. Tough climb up to the ladders. The worst part of the climb was an approximately 200 meter section where the vertical rise was greater than the horizontal run and the material was loose glacial material. The secret was to stay standing vertical so your pressure was down into the material. A hiker in front of me got parallel to the ground or too horizontal and was sending a massive amount of material onto my son and I. So much for calling it a "Lollipop Route".

Hi John, Had to take bit of a break, Thanks for the information I think it's really good for others to know! To be honest it sounds terrible 😂, would you recommend it to fit people? Personally I'm very scared of hights so I would rather not go to such places (even though I some times do).
I hate when you have inexperienced people in front of you on such places which does not realize that when they kick some gravel of the edge that's actually risking to hit people further down. That actually happend me when I went from the St Bernard Pass to La Fouly, you go zig zag down the mountain and it's incredibally steep and people just keep kicking rocks over the edge above you....

@@WalkandTalkchannel I found going up the actual ladders quite easy and going down them would be equally easy. If you look at old pictures of previous versions of the ladders, they have not always been so easy. Now getting up to them was quite difficult. First there was a lot of what I call boulder hopping, kind of like going across the Grand Desert before Cabane Prafleuri or the trail up to Cabane du Moiry, although the boulder hopping was shorter at less than .5 KM. Then there was the 200 meter or so section of very steep and very loose glacier material. We got behind a group with a professional guide and we followed his directions of putting away one of our hiking poles and using the remaining pole on the downhill side, staying very vertical and using our free hand on the uphill side to support us when possible. It was tough!!! Lastly just before the ladders were chains you had to hold onto kind of like the trail up to Cabane du Moiry or between Cabane Mont Fort and Cabane Louvie. 1) In summation, ladders easy trail up to the ladders (from the lake side) very challenging. 2) I brought some leather work gloves and they helped a lot in the last .5-1.0 km up to the ladders. 3) I was 62 when I went up in 2019 and was not in that good of shape and I made it. Without the advice from the professional guide it would have really been scary and tough. Hopes this helps.

@John Bailey Awesome, I'm pretty sure I'm to scared of doing this 😆 but I really appreciate you sharing this information given I didn't cover that part in the video and didn't have much information! (my main purpose is to help people on these trails and how to plan them, your insight here is matching that target, thanks alot!)

Beautiful mountains, amazing photography! Keep them coming . I so enjoy this armchair adventure. Does your brother ever go with you on these hikes?

Thanks Susie :) That's exactly what I was aiming for, it's nice to just sit at home sometimes and look at beautiful parts of the world! It makes me very excited to get out again though 😂 Michael is too occupied to join, but every now and then he comes to visit and we make our way to the mountains!

Nice video and great tips for hiking tours! Whats interesting about glaciers and these artificial lakes is that because of global warming glaciers are melting very fast and in some years it might become a problem because all these hydroelectric powerplants depend on the water produced by melting glaciers

Thank you very much! You could see the difference in the mountains compared with all the pictures I've seen of that glacier. I don't know if it's equally bad as the North/south pole melting however, I've not really though about the impact from these Glaciers melting actually I must admit

how did you do your resuply for food. How match food do you carry. Are there enough places (small stores) to buy your food?

Hi Enno, There are very few places along the way to restock in this area of rute 6. On this particular stretch there is no place to restock at all and you'd either have to bring it with you or go to the cabin I show in the video, we couldn't go there because of my injuries I had during this hike. Please note you also cant restock on water so it's very important that you carry enough!
We ate a big breakfast and then once we got to the final location, I anyway don't get hungry when I hike, only first once done. But for the majority of the videos I have on my channel about alpine passess trail you can only eat at the cabins (and restock on water) and if you want to save some money you'd unfortunatelly have to carry all of it the whole way.
If there are specific stretches you would like to ask about please feel free to write me again!
