I grew up with a straight guy people assumed was gay, just because of the way he dressed (neat and stylish; unusual for our town), and his voice, which was on the high side. That is what I assumed this documentary would be about -- silly stereotyping -- but no. Even in your video, the men relentlessly medicalizing themselves is terribly sad.
Those poor women. Bad enough for the guys that their faith has them trapped in their own sexuality, but their wives are trapped too, considering they pretty much can't leave their husbands and still maintain good standing in their community.

@burncult6306 Chris James covered it as well and I like him. I'm so glad MFCMP covered this show though. I was hoping someone who wasn't straight would because so far that's all I've seen.
Speaking as a bi woman who was raised Mormon… this was particularly painful to watch. My nuclear family accepts me and want me to be happy, but I’ve never formally come out to the extended family who I think would be less excepting. I recently began my first relationship and it’s with a trans man, if my extended family is rude to him I will 💯 cut them off for doing so.
Kept seeing the youtube recommendations trying to get me to watch videos about this show, and my only thought was "I'm going to wait and see if My Friends Call Me Pat covers this instead."
It is kind of wild that all the UA-camr reactions to the show so far have (at least as far as I’ve been able to tell) been from people who aren’t queer men
That was one of my first thoughts, too. Even if it's not specifically the other guys featured in this show, it just seems like if they're all getting together in these groups and conventions and trips, just for mormon men who are secretly attracted to men but don't want to leave their wives...well it just seems like everything is perfectly set up to have flings with each other they know will stay secret.
The insecurity and mental gymnastics that come in play to be someone who "experiences SSA" but "totally isn't gay or bi" will never cease to amaze me. It's so cool to be a completely straight man and openly talk about men I'd fuck if I was gay know that it means absolutely nothing.
Holy shit these guys are living that Norm McDonald bit where he says "I'm a deeply closeted gay man," and as soon as the other person says something about him leaving his wife, dating men, or anything gay, he's like, "psssh, no! What are ya talking about?" It's a very funny bit the way Norm would do it but a very sad life.
I want to point out that as an active Mormon, homophobia is of course rampant in the Church, but it is by no means universal. Many young Mormons already know being gay isn't a disease.
From an informal survey of people I've known, having serious teenage crushes on guys who were obviously gay seems to be a predictor of either (a) not being a cis woman or b) actually preferring people who aren't cis men. Or both. Bonus points for B if like, the crush in question was the kind of guy who was managing to be completely swishy by like, eighth grade.
Ya I always preferred guys who were gender nonconforming and/or not straight, I usually went for bisexual guys because I found that straight guys usually wanted me to change my behaviour or appearance for them to conform to certain standards. Imagine my surprise when I ended up being nonbinary and marrying a gender nonconforming bisexual person lol. I think queer people tend to prefer other queer people in relationships because there's a part of your identity that a straight/cis person might not fully understand or accept.
Thank you for adding the sped-up footage because some of these people are just so painfully sad. If I didn't know these were real people, it would be brilliant cringe comedy; instead I just have to actually ponder the life of quiet desperation and lies these people actually live in and the children brought up in that environment.

How come I’d never heard of this show (or SSA) in all these years despite my fascination with anything Mormon and/or culty, but I’ve seen 3 YT videos on it in the* last couple of weeks or so. Has the show become an instant Internet phenomenon?

I have joked for years that there was only one thing that didn't make me gay, but it's a pretty important thing. To hear someone say the opposite without irony is so fucking funny.
Ultimately, this situation is just so very sad. I understand the importance that religion has to some people, especially in the case of Utah Mormons, where it's the dominant religion AND culture, but for the religion to take precedence over one's happiness is just a tragedy. I'd be happy to see Pat take on more of these TLC one-off specials, but not that one with Katie Hopkins. She can go pound rocks.
I watched this when it aired, and it’s amazing to me it took this long for the UA-camrs to rediscover it. Fortunately it was an outrage when it first came out (pun intended) and as I recall from the controversy there were more episodes planned that didn’t happen. I know the past seems way worse for the LGBTQ+ community, but there were enough people to recognize how offensive this show was to make it a big deal (for the right reasons.) It’s interesting to see people react to it now. The bi erasure however . . . so far I haven’t seen any modern reactions to the show mention bisexuality at all, ignoring that bit of the episode. Thank you so much for addressing about it.
I definitely knew I wanted to address it because it would be one thing if they’re saying “I accept that I’m bisexual, but I love my wife and love my family” but that’s not at all what takes place in the show. Still, I think it’s important to clarify that for your audience if you’re going to address the topic respectfully
You are becoming one of my favorite UA-camrs. I really appreciate how you point out that not all Christians hate LGBTQ people. I'm a Christian myself and my denomination is 100% LGBTQ-accepting. And I don't mean "accepting" as in "love the sinner, hate the sin" - I mean accepting as in "we don't think homosexu*lity is a sin." I totally understand if you have a lot of negative feelings about Christianity, and you are absolutely justified in that. Christians as a whole have treated LGBTQ people shamefully over the years.

It really does just drive home the fact that women aren't expected to be more than a physical asset for men. Here we have these gay men being forced to objectify women by committing their while life to someone who will never find them attractive. They probably have some crazy insecurities if they're saying "yeah, ill marry a gay man."
Goes to show you how patriarchal Mormonism is. Women are expected to just go with whatever their husbands do even if those men aren't fulfilling the vows of their marriage. They still believe in courtship so each one of these women is expected to understand that this might be the only man interested in them so it's now or never if they want to build a family. When I went to Utah to see the Arches, we were eating lunch and there was a group of women who were Mormon and one had recently converted. She was talking about how difficult it's been to give up caffeine and the response from the group was, yah, get used to that. Ugh. I feel sorry for the women more than the men because at least the men kind of get to be comfortable with who they are while the wife is just a baby machine.
Watched a bigger youtuber's video about this show and although I generally enjoy their content I felt like bcs they aren't queer they didn't stress the fact enough that queer relationships are about more than sex/sexual attraction. Even when watching other content creators videos I felt that there was more emphasis on gay sex than on genuine gay love or general gay attraction. This isnt a unique problem in media but this video definitely made me (a queer person) feel more seen and understood because it's through a gay person's perspective on same-sex relationships as a real, emotional relationship. Really appreciate this pat ♥️
Really appreciate this comment 💕 that was part of my motivation for covering the topic, although I didn’t watch any other UA-camrs cover it at all, I felt it was important to have someone deal with the more queer elements of this rather than purely ridiculing it

It is kind of wild that all the UA-camr reactions to the show so far have (at least as far as I’ve been able to tell) been from people who aren’t queer men
So...the husbands are definitely sleeping together, right? The show was basically a dating service with extra steps.
I was thinking the same thing. They gotta be sleeping together.
Yeah, this was gross and kinda depressing. Mormonism is bad.
Pret is a solid 4 on the danger scale.
The insecurity and mental gymnastics that come in play to be someone who "experiences SSA" but "totally isn't gay or bi" will never cease to amaze me. It's so cool to be a completely straight man and openly talk about men I'd fuck if I was gay know that it means absolutely nothing.
About time someone gay covers this, and you didn't let us down
Ssa is just being gay with extra steps
I thought the show was a mockumentary, never thought it presented itself as something serious, now I feel bad for them
I’m surprised none of them told Jeff’s wife that her under-eye eyeliner was way too harsh for a day look.
I laughed I won’t lie
"Did you milk it, yourself?" Was a wild question to ask xD
I screeched.
Solidarity with Tom wrt having zero style and wearing clothes that are both boring AND ill-fitting. We exist!
Can’t help but think, why are these people married when they clearly aren’t satisfied with their relationships
Because mormons
*Because.*
Cause as good mormons this is expected of them. I think you don't realise how high the pressure to marry in such religions is.
For what it's worth, *I* laughed at the "prêt à manger" bit.
let's gooooo
Me too, I immediately thought of pret a manger
if an adblocker has the GALL to advertise to me, they have made it to where i will never use their service in my lifetime
You know it's crazy cause my boyfriends not gay either
For me it was both. Bonus points because I started picking out the swishy boys in preschool.
The "pearly white = pearly gates" line killed me. Subbed
22:30 That look said that Jeff chose the bear over his wife. lol 😂
when there's a camera crew filming your intimate conversations, it's NOT reality.
it's acting, directed, scripted, etc.
Never dissapoint with ur outfits
As soon as you said 'Pret' i also immediately thought of the coffee shop but then again I'm British
same
The fear of being alone makes people do crazy things!
"Check out this totally sweet new closet I just got! It's called the SSA and it's where I'll be hiding from now on!"
🤮
3:59 this breaks my heart but also low key kinda feels like a hatecrime that TLC put that particular line in
Here's the person I was waiting to watch this show!
All I know is I want that jacket
Head brand tennis jacket from the 80s!
Came for the fancy jacket, stayed for the amazing vid
I saw a few of your vids before but the inclusion of Book of Mormon songs, in fitting context, obliges me to subscribe.
I believe! That in 2024 you changed your mind about subscribing!
Thank you for adding the sped-up footage because some of these people are just so painfully sad. If I didn't know these were real people, it would be brilliant cringe comedy; instead I just have to actually ponder the life of quiet desperation and lies these people actually live in and the children brought up in that environment.
Whenever I feel awkward and need to come out but am too nervous to, I say "Um... my boyfriend is gay." I'm single.
PAT!!!! I saw you on Weakest Link!!! 😂 omgg you did so well! I was so devastated when they voted you off! Did you do ghost tours before youtube?? Did I miss you ever talking about this!?
shhhhh no you didn’t 😭😭 I try to ignore that being on my flop era
@myfriendscallmepat you were brilliant 🥰 I've never been so delighted with an episode of WL 😆 but ok I'll keep it on the low 🤫🫡
@ haha I’ll keep that in mind as I’m making my next application for another reality show
There’s something incredibly depressing about seeing people pretty much admit both to themselves and to others that their gay yet still choose to deny it
Dude! Jeff came into my retail job a couple months ago! I ended up faking needing to go to the bathroom in order to go laugh
I would pull out a reference to the goat cheese salad to see if he’s still in his flirting with waiters era
How come I’d never heard of this show (or SSA) in all these years despite my fascination with anything Mormon and/or culty, but I’ve seen 3 YT videos on it in the* last couple of weeks or so. Has the show become an instant Internet phenomenon?
They greenlightet The Tila Tequila Dating Show who espacially now aged worse than back so nothing suprises me.
I am glad that I was able to not only have a accepting mom and sister but that when I came to terms with being bi I felt more happy with myself. Plus I have a boyfriend who is really handsome 😊
Hot boyfriends always make it better! 😁
pls tell me where you got that jacket thoooo
Yeah ima need that info my boy
It's an old design from the sportswear company HEAD but unfortunately it's been out of production a long time it seems. Only listings I could find for it are removed Ebay listings.
eBay! You can snag some good stuff on there. This jacket in particular is made by Head IIRC. I think they're a tennis brand, that's what I mostly use it for
The show should've just been called Some Bisexual Guys
Nah, he's right.
They're gay.
Thank you for this perspective. I've been waiting on this!
So happy for you and your success on UA-cam bro, your videos are well made and well thought out and you’re legitimately funny af
Go Bills
"if god didn't want people to be gay, then why do we have shohei ohtani???" i think Pat just found an argument without flaw
I have joked for years that there was only one thing that didn't make me gay, but it's a pretty important thing. To hear someone say the opposite without irony is so fucking funny.
DO NOT GIVE KATY HOPKINS ANY MORE OXYGEN. Please and thank you. :)
The only reason I’d want to see the Katie Hopkins video is to see her made fun of 😭💀
I watched this when it aired, and it’s amazing to me it took this long for the UA-camrs to rediscover it. Fortunately it was an outrage when it first came out (pun intended) and as I recall from the controversy there were more episodes planned that didn’t happen. I know the past seems way worse for the LGBTQ+ community, but there were enough people to recognize how offensive this show was to make it a big deal (for the right reasons.)
It’s interesting to see people react to it now.
New subscriber here, and a new fan! I love your content, your delivery, and your personality! 😘
Thanks friend! Happy to have you here
You are becoming one of my favorite UA-camrs.
Very cool, friend❤ are you Episcopalian, by any chance? I hear they’re pretty progressive
@@vidyasreeram2587 ELCA Lutheran. Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. It was named before "evangelical" meant right-wing. We are the progressive Lutherans in America. The conservative Lutherans are called "Missouri Synod."

Ad ends at 6:00. You're welcome.
It really does just drive home the fact that women aren't expected to be more than a physical asset for men. Here we have these gay men being forced to objectify women by committing their while life to someone who will never find them attractive. They probably have some crazy insecurities if they're saying "yeah, ill marry a gay man."
Oh, they're Mormons, it's *so much* more than that. They're signed up for eternity, here.
What would an ' I married a lesbian' show drive home?
Jesus Christ how many people are gonna cover this show
Watched a bigger youtuber's video about this show and although I generally enjoy their content I felt like bcs they aren't queer they didn't stress the fact enough that queer relationships are about more than sex/sexual attraction.
Really appreciate this comment 💕 that was part of my motivation for covering the topic, although I didn’t watch any other UA-camrs cover it at all, I felt it was important to have someone deal with the more queer elements of this rather than purely ridiculing it
2:10 We need a video on "Outrageous 911: They made my burger wrong."
