    agree with the other comments. That is likely dish detergent to break any sheen that may be on the water. Not the environmentally best way to do it, but in reality, the quantity of leakage from a van like that is so small that a HAZMAT recovery would yield almost nothing. The dish detergent will break the hydrocarbons into small pieces which are then more easily digested by bacteria in the water. Likely there will be no noticeable damage to the shoreline and nothing detectable in the water within minutes.

      You're kinda right. 2 possibilities 1. The bigger tow truck if the same company was closer than other trucks and the flat bed was farther away and or busy at the time of call so he startedthe call. 2. A lot of flat beds don't have muck more than 20ft more cable past the bed and the bigger tow trucks are more typically used for off the hiway recoveries thus have more than enough cable and usually more than 1 winch.

  • @marzsit9833
    @marzsit9833 2 роки тому +14

    what typically happens is when the driver backs down the ramp the rear wheels are on a slippery surface but the vehicle stays in one place because the driver has their foot on the brake, stopping all 4 wheels. when you take your foot off the brake, now only the rear wheels are stopping the vehicle and if the ramp is steep or the vehicle is too heavy, it simply slides down the ramp. this problem is compounded if the driver doesn't unstrap the boat from the trailer before backing down the ramp, in that case the floating boat lifts the trailer which also lifts the rear of the towing vehicle, helping it to slide down the ramp easier.... this is why i always tell people who use a 4x4 for towing a boat to always put it in 4-wheel drive, that way the front wheels will remain stopped when you back down a slippery ramp.

      This is all compounded when you have old tires that are weather cracking bad. Most of the vehicles sliding in up north have crappy tires. Either street tires that were never designed for off-road used, or tires 6 years old with almost no tread left. That and a lack of common sense, if the ramp is covered in green, you better scrub it off before you try to back down 4x4 or not.

    The rotator that got the van out is only equipped with an under-tow bar for lifting semi trucks with special cups that lift the linkage. he would not have been able to "tow" the van very far, and of course not with the trailer on it. The rollback can drag the van up.

    • @hogwild5844
      @hogwild5844 2 роки тому +4

      Yup. First on scene but didnt have capacity to tow the van. Helpful it turned up however due to its weight as a smaller truck may have struggled with the water filled weight of the van.
      Odd that that the second truck that loaded and took the van away didnt pull forward from the ramp with the trailer attached till the trailer was on flat ground and not still on the ramp.

    • @littlee.4723
      @littlee.4723 2 роки тому +8

      Rotator???? That truck was a 3212, not even close to a rotator. Its is a medium duty truck that is perfectly capable of towing the van or the trailer, but not both. It is NOT a tow truck for heavy duty trucks. The flatbed can tow both, van on the bed and the trailer on the stinger. Also to tow it with the drive wheels on the ground you have to pull the driveshaft to keep from doing damage to the transmission. Now I know its totaled anyway, but its policy for any good tow company.

    Regarding the wrecker question. When the police have an underwater recovery,they usually request a medium to heavy duty wrecker that will have enough power to pull whatever type of vehicle out of the water. Past experiences have lead to flatbeds or smaller repo style wreckers not having the strength to do the job and wasting time waiting for the stronger wrecker.
    As far as the flatbed towing the ‘casualty’ it has the ability to not only flatbed a vehicle, it also has a trailer hitch attachment on it. We call it the ‘stinger’ in the industry. Giving the flatbed the capability to tow two vehicles at once .
    The medium duty could have towed the van…but would have had to drop the driveshaft to do so.

    Back of the napkin math... Interior volume of an average cargo van (not just 'cargo' space, but full interior volume) is about 400cu. ft. That's ~2,992 gallons of water, which weighs around 24,921lbs or 12.5 tons, not including the weight of the van + trailer, so figure close to ~18 tons? Guessing the flatbed isn't rated for a pull like that.

    The first truck was way more powerful than the second one. They can put the van on the deck and tow the trailer.

    That's how the tire companies afford all that chrome, use several trucks for one measly van. The first truck could've towed the van with the wheel lift with the trailer attached. But get the times the fee if you bring in more trucks and drivers....

    Solution used to get rid of gas or oil in water is probably dish soap or laundry detergent. And 2nd tow truck was use because first tow truck was a heavy duty for bigger vehicle. Easier for flatbed to haul van and can tow trailer behind it.

    Nobody, but nobody will beat Arthur, he sunk 3 boats, pickup & trailer. All in one day before lunch. All 3 boats which he launched 1 after the other in the span of about 3hrs. All 3, he forgot to put the drain plugs in.

    The big tow truck was to pull it out. The flat bed can tow the van and the flat bed. Van on the bed and trailer on the reach. The reason for 2 was the flat bed may not have been able to pull it out but the big one couldn’t tow it without dropping the drive shaft.

    @MiamiBoatRamps The first tow truck would have to pick up the van by the front tires and drag it. Given that it is a rear wheel drive van, they are designed to be towed either the rear wheels (difficult given the front wheels turn) or they need to be towed by a flat bed.

  • @schumannresonanceswithverte

    The first one is a big rig recovery; It's called a "rotator boom," for lifting heavy equipment.
    A van full of water is "heavy lift"; yet it's not a proper wrecker for passenger vehicles.
    The rotator boom is not a tow truck, per se.
    The flatbed doesn't have the power in the wench to lift the 'heavy lift' out of the water.
    The rotator boom is set-up to tow bid trucks, not passenger vehicles, like the van.
    The E-150, or E250 frame is not a big enough truck for the rotator boom-type.

    • @MBr397
      @MBr397 2 роки тому

      That's not a rotater. It's just a tow truck. Rotaters have a boom that rotates around, hence the name rotater, that trucks boom doesn't rotate.

  • @markanthony6758
    @markanthony6758 2 роки тому

    The first tow truck was meant for larger tows, like box trucks or semi's. The clamps on the rear are larger than what the vans wheels are. Would have damaged the van more. The flat bed was probably called in because it would have been hard to disconnect the driveshaft. Would have locked the tranny up and caused more damage.

  • @marklafferty4031
    @marklafferty4031 2 роки тому

    Probably the first truck had to go to call as it’s a super heavy duty tow truck and the second truck, the jerri Dan can take care of the work van.

  • @nickd901
    @nickd901 2 роки тому

    THis is dumb but is the van salvageable? It was probably submerged for an hour or so. If you were to rinse the saltwater and drain, then fill all the fluids and diff oil do you think that van would be able to run again? Ive always thought that it cant but people can do crazier stuff with salvaged vehicles
