    Currently in my 2018 tacoma, I run it in sport mode only, I noticed in drive it would jump gears way to much and kill my gas mileage. I played with sport mode for a while and got about 3-4 mpg, not much but I do have less shifting unless I’m really gunning it, keeps it from jumping back and forth in the gears as it does in drive. I recommend if you do drive a Tacoma to utilize the sport function and have more control over your gears

    my 2018 gets 19 to 22 mpg. stock new truck, but it did not get that until my dealer flashed the ecm with a new update they told me about. it no longer does this crazy hunting for gears and down shifting. it made the truck a WAY better and more fun to drive. yes some may need gears and i can see it would be a fix, but they fixed mine with a simple flash of the ecm.

      We haven't seen much about this yet, is that something dealer warranty covers then? I'd venture to assume that while it likely helps having an updated tune, it can't replace the mechanical advantage for most truck owners. Speaking especially to the ones who modify them, but I am curious as to if your dealer covered this under warranty & if it would make things even better yet.

      @@NitroGear No sir it cant replace gears for sure, and yes it was covered under warranty. I was very sick and sorry that i bought the truck (my first new vehicle) and when they did this, just as soon as i turned out on the street and took off!! i seen a huge difference. I now love the Tacoma and love driving it. Some people have told me there dealer has told them there truck was not eligible for this update because the vin number didn't qualify. No idea what thats all about, but they did mine for free.

    Alright, while I plan to make the 4.88 jump, the scenario is different for everyone. I have a ‘16 on a 2” lift with 285s in load c, lighter wheels... I drive in Colorado daily, mostly freeway (75+ for 62 miles total) with speedo corrected I’m good for 19.5mpg (17.5 with mid height RTT on bed), if I’m in stop and go it gets worse, if I’m holding at 60 it’ll do trip averages at 21. I know I don’t use 6th all that much, but it’s there when necessary.
    My biggest thought is changing to 4.88s may alleviate some of the times it gets hung right between 2nd and 3rd (that is 3rd could then pull just a little lower vs. the jerky downshift to 2nd).
    It’s ultimately anecdotal as it’s one persons experience. When I began my build though, I tried to keep rolling/unsprung mass as low as possible if not lighter than stock.

    I have a 2018 TRD OFF ROAD, bone stock, long bed, 6 speed auto. I get 21mpg on trips. 16mpg if I'm pulling my trailer with two dirtbikes in it. I use the ECT mode when towing or climbing hills. It feels much better in the ECT mode. When not in ECT mode it always feels like it's in one gear too high. Idk about messing with the gearing as it is still under warranty.

    I bought a brand new 2019 tacoma off-road from a Toyota dealership. They had the truck modded with a 3 inch lift and 285 tires to make it sell quicker. After driving it around for several hundred miles I could tell that the transmission was not right with all of the gear searching. I brought it back several times complaining that something was wrong but they insisted the truck was perfectly fine and the 3rd gen trucks just have that “shifty” characteristic. Now 2 years later I’m seeing these videos about the gearing being off from the factory. I feel like the dealership should pay for me to have my truck regeared to 4.88 since they sold it from the dealership with oversized tires, which are making an already known problem even worse. Thoughts?

      not trying to be rude but youre the one who bought a car with bigger wheels and didnt ask if they re-geared for the said wheels and im assuming you test drove it before buying it? stock car the trans does gear hunt by default and when you keep adding weight the trans will work harder and will hunt for the right gear a little more. the trans isnt broken, its just working a little harder. if anything, its not your fault or the dealerships fault that youre not happy, it is toyota who put in terrible gearing. its unbelievable they put in such horrible gears knowing people will larger tires on it plus other accessories like bumpers. i consider this move by toyota using is called the "pass the cost down to the customer" technique.

Yes I did test drive the vehicle briefly, but I was so excited about getting a brand new truck I didn’t notice any real driving issues. It was only after a few months of driving that I settled into the truck really well and started feeling all of the shifty transmission issues. No one to blame but myself and the corporate shits at Toyota R&D who obviously didn’t test the truck enough or just didn’t care. Lesson learned on my part. I’ll never buy another tacoma again.

      @NitroGear  5 років тому +1

      We actually aren't at altitude, we are at 7-900 feet elevation. This truck is regularly driven at 4000 ft as well. While altitude and mountains / hills do increase a need for gearing, the video and data will be mostly flat highway and/or in town. Also we do spend a significant amount of time in all types of elevations and gearing is an improvement across the board. Every summer in Ouray/Silverton CO area all the non-regeared trucks are really struggling!

    Also for folks who want to know how the math work and which gears to get take a look below:
    Desire tire size ( I have 35's) 35x stock gear ratio ( manual Taco 4.30) thus 35x4.30/stock tire size (29**) = optimal gear ratio for normal driving
    thus (again) 35x4.30/29= 5.19gear ratio needed.
    Not a number set in stone however more of a guide. Cheers

Well, if you know theres a problem, that the gears aren't matching the powertrain, then why not fix it?? If I keep this truck I definitely am going to look into gears to see if the notorious hesitation issue goes away.

    Good info. This re-gearing business is totally new to me, so I appreciate you sharing this info. I recently bought a '98 4Runner 4WD SR5. It's a 5-speed, and I feel like I'm having to go up to higher RPMs than normal (2.5-3.0, sometimes stressing it some). If I shift before that, I have very little power in the next gear. So could that be a re-gearing issue? The tires are a little bigger than stock (265/75/16), and I actually just picked up some heavier M/T's today (same size), so I'm wondering what my gearing will be like (shifting speeds, RPMs, etc.). How do I even know what my current gear ratios are? Ignorant to this but very interested in learning more and maybe doing something about it. Awesome Tacoma, BTW! • @NitroGear

      I would suggest going 4.88 - and also adding the OV (Orange Virus) tune if the top speed is a concern. We have found that the 3rd gens have a "governor" of sorts that get tripped out by the gear change. The truck thinks it's going faster than it really is, and in turn your governor kicks in far earlier than it's supposed to. That's where the tuner comes in handy.

    Nitro Gear Package for 16+ Toyota Tacoma is one of Nitro’s biggest sellers. Why? Because these trucks need regeared. The Tacoma has a very tall overdrive in 5th AND 6th gear to turn low RPMS. The new 3.5l V6 makes plenty of horsepower, but needs to rev. Even with stock tires we have found the 6th gear is nearly useless, the gearing is so high that the transmission is constantly shifting. In a STOCK Tacoma Automatic 6th gear puts you at ~1500 RPM @ 60MPH. This simply does not work. You may not realize it, but you probably are hardly ever in 6th gear unless you are almost going downhill. By regearing you can bring the motor back to the RPM it needs to be. This will improve Economy, Performance, and shifting. This is one of the most important modifications you can make to your late model Tacoma whether on a stock truck, or especially when running oversized tire. This is the only way to properly compensate for inadequate factory gearing and the increase in tire diameter. We often hear people are worried they will turn high rpm’s if they regear. This is simply not the case. Remember, the Auto trans has a double overdrive. See the below examples:
    Example
    Stock 2019 Tacoma TRD Offroad w/ Auto Trans:
    3.91 & Stock Tire, ~1500 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~1750 RPM @ 70 MPH (NOT ENOUGH RPM!)
    4.88 & Stock Tire, ~1950RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2200 RPM @ 70 MPH
    33” 4.88, ~1750 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2000 RPM @ 70 MPH)
    33” 5.29, ~1900 RPM @ 60 MPH, ~2250 RPM @ 70 MPH)
    *Manual trans RPM figures will be higher.
    Auto:
    Stock-33” 4.88 Most Popular
    33”+ 5.29 Most Popular (or AT w/o Locker)
    Manual:
    32-34” 4.88 Most Popular
    35”+ 5.29 Most Popular
    RPM Figures are similar for Overseas Hilux Revo. And yes, even if you have a diesel, you will still benefit from the gearing. 4.88 is ideal for 33-35” on Turbo Diesel models. We have actually toured 1000’s of miles of the Australia in a Diesel Hilux with 35” and 4.88, and it performed flawlessly.

    Alright, you are only talking lower geared with the higher ratio. I have a 18 6MT. I can get 22 and obviously it doesnt shift because i shift it. The manuals have a 4.10 gear ratio compared to the 3.93. I want to go to 3.93 to see if i can get better mileage. Would this be efficient?

    • @NitroGear

      No, keep your 4.10s - The 6 speed Manual is geared OK for most. The autos are what this issue really is focused on, however, if you went up going bigger on tire size, you should also swap in the 4.88s to keep stock performance & a happy trans.

    I need to regear soon my 2019 4x4 Tacoma w/ auto trans. Have seen with interest the different posts you have uploaded on UA-cam
    From these posts you claim that a bone stock Tacoma should come with 4.88 gearing, ratio that compared to the manual transmission version is lower from 1st through 4th and higher in 5th & 6th. This said and your statement that stock Tacomas should come from factory with 4.88, which I agree, what gearing should I use with 33" tires. I am well aware that the general consensus is that 4.88's are for 33' tires and 5.29 with larger. My calculations say different. If 4.88 is the best match for stock, 5.29 gives w/33's is side by side almost the same ratio. Why is then said that 4.88 the reasonable gearing with 33's when this setup would be higher compared to stock and not 5.29 that comparably would be same as 4.88 with stock tires.
    I know this is a complicated topic to explain but at the end of the day numbers are numbers.
    Thanks

My stealership didn’t do the maintenance that they were supposed to so I’m also way behind on all that , but even when it was fresh off the lot, still. Very poor fuel non economic truck and the better suspension isn’t even..... maybe the first few months but that’s it, and it was never exposed to rough anything that could have made it that way. Disagree with this video. Look at the "real-time" fuel economy guage not the avg. and it shows 25 mpg. Avg. fuel economy depends on a lot of factors: how many stop/starts, how hard of acceleration etc. As a Toyota Tundra owner, I can say raising gears on a stock truck will raise the cruise RPM and use more fuel, not less. Regearing for bigger tires yes, because you will loose those top gears, but not in stock and this video actually shows that contrary to what he is saying... And one more thing, the trans is not "hunting" for gears. It's designed to have a high overdrive for fuel economy on flat cruise with no wind to get the best possible fuel economy. Downshifting to fifth or fourth reduces fuel economy but that's what acceleration or hill climbing does. Lastly, try driving at 75 mph (interstate speeds) you will be higher in the torque band of the motor, and their will be less tendency to downshift than at 60 mph, but try driving at 75 with higher gears on stock. Tip: To squeeze out max fuel economy on these trucks, drive with your tow on the accelerator and drive it like a manual trans, meaning let up slightly on the gas and re-engage to get the computer to upshift. I can get 2-3 mpg more driving this way with cruising to stops (vs. braking hard). This will not be performance driving though.

    • @NitroGear
      @NitroGear  5 років тому +3

      You can get 0 or 100 mpg at instant gauge. What matters is real calculated economy. How far you go on your fuel. We are comparing Trip MPG, Tank MPG etc from prior to regear and there is a huge increase. Less RPM does not always mean less fuel. There is a tipping point where the power produced at too low of an RPM is not enough to propel the vehicle forward, and the trans downshifts. Once it down shifts it is turning higher RPM, and burning more fuel. The idea is to gear the diffs to put the RPM's As covered to great extent, 6th gear in the auto puts you Less than 1500 rpm at 60. With the 4.88 its around 1800. nothing crazy. Just enough that it doesnt shift all the time. In fact 5.29 would still be fine, but 4.88 better suited for daily drivers with stock tires. I agree with you that yes you do loose top gear with larger tires, but its beyond that. And maybe that was the part that through you off. What I'm showing is that the top (6th/.58:1) gear was already useless with the 3.90 stock gears. So long story short, stock tacoma needs regeared, and a tacoma with oversized tires needs regeared even lower.

    • @JimmyDevere
      @JimmyDevere 5 років тому

      @@NitroGear I agree regearing for larger tires is a good idea if not a necessity, but I am still not sure about the test you showed on video. If you can show a marked increase in fuel economy with a re-gear on stock set-up then I will agree. But the real time fuel economy shows you what you are using in that gear and as Tundra owner and I've driven the new Tacoma for several days rental, it works the same. It shows you what you are getting at that gear and in the video in 6th gear it was 25ish mpgs. The two wheel drive 4 dour economy is rated at 24 mpg hwy and 19 combined. You were getting 16 combined and thats realistic depending on the driving factors mentioned above which is not about gearing. Toyota is conservative in their estimate and with my lifted Tundra I can squeeze 16 combined but if i try to keep up with every car at the stoplight that drops quickly to 13, 12 or even 11 if there is wind and hills. So, I'm not arguing gears are a good idea because they are good, I just don't think your argument about stock is valid.

      @@JimmyDevere not sure what to tell you. I literally drive this truck every day and drove it with stock gears over the course of the past 1500 miles got no better than 16.1 average per tank. Looking at the instant read out means nothing as it will vary from 0 to 100 depending on how much throttle you are giving it you have to look at average. Lower RPM at highway speeds, especially if you do a lot of highway driving, will make your engine last much longer.
