- a Remarkable television programme made by the BBC .
A portrait of the changing year in the Cotswolds, using revolutionary timelapse photography to show the rhythms and cycles of nature.
This is a remarkable film. However , you may find the authenticity is better in this post which i did in October 2011.
here is the link: • Restless Year Original...
This post is the second half of the Restless Year, and I had the time then to really get a good quality upload done. You may find it best to switch to the above link at about the 16 min mark! It's a really lovely film , a reminder of how recently life was so much more natural (only 1995), and the quality's better than in this post.

I like many people desperately wanted to see this released on DVD. To me it amongst the finest BBC documentaries produced. Everything about it reflects what is good about the British ability to make fine programmes. As has been said before the church scenes set to "In The Bleak Midwinter" is so emotive it always brings a lump to the throat.
BBC - This needs releasing as soon as possible!!
Thank yo for uploading so we can all enjoy once again
Yes in 2025 definitely!
Happy New Year. 🥳
i saw this when it first aired many a christmas ago....it had such an impact on me and i have watched it one way or another every xmas since...like other people here, my need to rewatch again and again is very strong... the ending is indeed sublime, combining those images with my favourite hymn is so incredibly evocative....and that narrator's voice...omg...
Same. Luckily I taped it when it came out in 1996 and have watched it every year since at Christmas.
Absolutely Brilliant !!---- Watching the cricket scene--it struck me that, this must be the only game in the world where the sportsmen scoff all that sugar and starch at 'half time' then continue playing.
I have been looking for this amazing wildlife film since I first saw it back in 1996. I lived in Australia at the time and was spending the holiday season with relatives here in England when this was aired as part of a Christmas Programme that was hosted by David Attenborough. I scoured the shops on both sides of the globe for many years until someone suggested today that I may find something on UA-cam. I thought it highly unlikely but here it is! Thank you, thank you. I would pay good money for a HD DVD copy of this
If only the BBC realised what a huge potential revenue source it has in it's archives. I would gladly pay for a DVD of this remarkable programme in HD, not to mention countless other quality programmes it has produced over the years that were shown only once, then discarded. I remember seeing this originally on tv, and have never forgotten it, especially the poignant finale featuring Snowshill parish church. Thanks so much for uploading it.
Thanks for naming the church, I've always wanted to know where that is! 😊
Thank you for posting this! I saw it in about 2000 and have never had any luck tracking it down since...I'm very happy now 😊
I too searched for years for this Gem. typical BBC ,has no sense of value. It should have been available on iplayer ,at least. Thanks to the person who recorded it on their VHS, not brilliant clarity, but better than nothing. Thanks again.
Like other viewers I came across it by chance when shown on BBC2 in the 1990s - rushed to pop a VHS tape in the VCR and captured all but the first couple of minutes of it. Have watched it so many times over the years and keep hoping the BBC will finally issue it on DVD. Meanwhile I am going to transfer my VHS recording to DVD ... however it was great to finally see on UA-cam those first few minutes that I missed! As others have said, the ending, with 'In The Bleak Midwinter', is just sublime. Thank you for posting this!
Same! I missed the first minute or so and the vhs is worn out now 😂
Thank you so much for posting this. I caught the last 10 minutes of it when it screened in Australia (Christmas '96 or '97) and I've looked out for it ever since - I've even Googled it to no avail - until now. Beautifully done.
Thanks for posting. Been looking for this since I first saw it back in the 90s. Don't know why bbc didn't put it out on video.
+HaddronCollider Because they are run by idiots these days. I videoed it at the time.
WONDERFUL !! WELL DONE !!
My 'Cotswolds' jewel on earth ,thank you for this wonderful video!
Thank you so much for putting this on UA-cam! I recorded it back in the 90's and watched it over and over again - then by mistake I recorded something over it!! I was mortified!! I have tried everything to get a copy of it, I even contacted the BBC! I never thought I'd ever have the pleasure of watching it again, now I have!! It's totally made my year (not a 'Restless' one though!). Thanks so much once again. By the way, does anyone know whereabouts in the Cotswolds this was filmed?
Hi there, almost the same happened to me . . . . my most favourite part = on the 43.00 minutes = church - snow - and IN THE BLEAK MIDWINTER . . . . that gives me the most Christmas feeling. LOVE GREAT BRITAIN . . . HAVE A MERRY XMAS & HAPPY 2017, Elise Xhaflaire from the Netherlands.
Thank You and a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year to you too!!
It looks like Snowshill, near Broadway, to me.
Here we are again A MERRY XMAS & PEACEFUL 2018 . . . . almost at the beginning of BLEAK MIDWINTER.
Has anyone saw The Restless Year On NBC?
Do you know where I can get this on DVD please?
