This was the video I was waiting for when I saw that last one. When I was small, I used to revel in breaking out of maps just to see what I could see. The two games that I would do this the most in was Halo 1 and 2 for the original xbox. You could really break those games if you tried hard enough. I think a spent more time breaking out of maps than I did actually playing the game. Those memories are the fondest I have of my childhood.

Completing repetitive, yet simple, motions can become exhausting after a while. I imagine you ended up with quite the workout! I eagerly await the release of HL:A and I thank you for the content!
I love your narration, I just imagine attempting to describe this without the video and think how much more of a story you can tell in VR than in traditional games. Even playing with the static environments seems more immersive
This dug up an old memory. I remember over a decade ago there was a map where you ascended the Citadel by climbing ladders and gangways along the exterior while fighting various enemies from the HL2 beta. I do not think there are any surviving examples video or otherwise, but it was quite a spectacle.
MostMercifulMoose On steam they have the controller only, but it’s out of stock. They are coming back in stock March 9th, and will be sold out that day.
The citadel was always in 3D, a building that size would make it easily noticeable if it was in 2D. In fact the only it was in 2D was in Episode 2 because it was a ruin really far away and the game tries to get your attention on the portal storm happening above it.
Your coverage of HLA so far has been top notch. From the speculative and preview bits to this. I can't wait for more coverage from you. If I had VR I feel like I would've done the same things as you. explore and marvel at what's in front of me but also eventually break it and have fun with that as well. I don't know what I'm really trying to say here. It's just that it's great to see someone like video games and be excited about them even in their 30s like you. I'm rambling)
I don't think these environments are made in Source 2. From Valve's post about these preview locations: "The rendering technology available in SteamVR's native environments is different than that in Half-Life: Alyx, and the interactivity is significantly lower than what the game itself provides. So while these scenes do not have quite as much fidelity as they will in the actual game, we think they are a faithful enough translation to provide a fun VR preview of the game's setting". Going outside the bounds of the intended area is probably not something they considered while developing these preview locations.
HeyItsMrTom I Hope that’s the case, I imagine the areas where we aren’t supposed to be able to go will still be significantly less detailed though, to improve the performance of the headsets.
From how much this video alone activates my fear of heights, I'm really looking forward to the inevitable shaky bridge sequence this game should have, like in Half Life 2
