I love the aesthetic of transparent devices.
Most of them are boring as all just look like black boxes and some metal. If a device has a fan then it may be cool(pun intended) to see it spin.
I'd probably like them more if they have flashy LEDs and moving parts, but I find them quite static and stale. I'd probably prefer a metal casing or maybe some cool decal art.
Same with me. I always choose the transparent option, if it's offered. I wish the miyoo mini offered a transparent version.

Man it seems so long ago when odroid changed the handheld landscape. It's sad they haven't kept up with the competition, especially in terms of build quality.

Hardkernel's not really in the handheld business, to be fair, or really all that consumer-facing (hence the barebones nature of their documentation, storefront, etc.). I assume most of their activity comes from directly selling their SBCs to businesses and hobbyists, with the emulation machines being used as a small additional revenue stream that also helps promote their new offerings.

I bought a couple of original odroid go. Sure they died wothon a few months but they were ok. But not gonna put up with this DIY style.anymore.
It's been such a fast moving industry these last few years and I found it a lot more interesting to follow than recent smartphone evolution since those are so commoditized now.
Thanks for the review Russ. It's a hard device to make a case for as it stands. I'm not ruling out getting one to tinker with, but I'll wait and see how the firmware situation turns out.

Spot on Russ. I am a huge fan of Hardkernel's designs, and they have given me some of the best times tinkering in the last few years. I am one of those that has a personal project to build my own handheld distribution compiling almost everything from scratch, so I hadn't realized how many things we take for granted are a big no for a regular user. I appreciate how you have highlighted the ethos of the company, as it is one of the most appealing points for me. The fact that they also sell it as cheap as they can is another. Having said all this, I hope one day they decide to put a bit more of money on mainstream features like the buttons, controllers, shells, etc, that will surely get some traction from other community developers.
I totally agree, many of the handheld community developers only choose to work on the devices they personally use and enjoy. So the more enjoyable they make the device, the more apt the devs will be to work on it!

Looks like a nice step in the right direction. I hope they get enough support to continue with their goals. It's like the Retroid Pocket 2. Originally didn't have touchscreen, but was cheap and slow - but worked for retro which was the point. Then they added touch and more power with RP2+ - now they are fine tuning with Retroid Pocket 3+ with bigger screen and even more power while still hitting that budget mark. - I'm looking forward to what this company does. 😁

I ordered the RG552, should be here this week. The community support has greatly changed the device and I'm willing to accept its limitations and shortcomings as there seems to be workarounds for the missing 5ghz wifi and Bluetooth with the dongle for Android. Not to mention both Linux and Android share the same games sdcard, so you can get the best of both OS's.
I have the same. Its the best thing out there for retro gaming period.
When you use Android, you can put an extra SD with games in slot 1. The 552 can read both slots and you could upgrade to 2 terabyte (2× 1 Terabyte SD cards).

@@TommyGunsXL That's great to know too and a brilliant idea if my games card fills up. I'm planning on supporting Black Seraph and using Android 9 on it once I get it, but will focus on the Linux side first to get back into Atari 8 bit and C64 that I played when I was young.
after living and breathing all of these various handhelds, I bought a steam deck and now I dont care about any of these anymore, but i know they still have their place

Plus, I'm not here for a review of the steam deck but rather stating that it has none of the shortcomings of all of these handles that I nickel and dimmed myself buying all these years. I'd say just stop buying them and save the cash you spend and instead get the deck.

the Deck isn't even a proper handheld, the thing is enormous, it's a portable PC, that's what it is, a different class of device
Hey Russ, I really appreciate this review. I've been digging into the ODROID Go Ultra, and it looks like there are now some custom firmware options. The ODROID forums have The Retro Arena, JELOS, and even Android 12 in the Ultra's Projects subform. Hope you can find some time to take a look at that. Also I've seen a couple videos of modding this thing and it looks easy. If the custom firmwares and rubber dome mods are enough to fix this thing, it looks like a very powerful and fun device for under $200 (after mods).
If you haven't, you should really try the newer JELOS builds on the RG552 as it brought mainline Linux to it. PSP got a big bump and things in general run great. Gamecube might even have a couple games playable soon
@@Pridetoons I'm referring to mainline kernel which is 5.19 rn for the 552, but soon it'll be 5.19.16. Afaik JELOS is the only one on that, even the devs themselves say that :P
@Natural Creature that works too though the higher res and larger display on the 552 makes it more enjoyable imo
Also the true stick, plus that there's a second one are making things a lot better. The nub was just bad. All the other psp controls are very nice though.

Love when you upload. Is there any way you could do a video of android game performance on the rg353p? Me and some others wanted to know if it will play max payne, jedi knights 3, doom 3, half-life 2, etc...
I still sit back, grab a punk IPA and watch your videos entirely despite the steam deck putting a complete halt to any sort of GAS I had until then :) keep it up

I have a Powkiddy RGB10 Max 2 as my daily driver and it is a superb and much improved clone of the Go Super. If Powkiddy would clone the Go Ultra into the same form factor as the Max 2 then it would be a must buy for me.
That's exactly what they plan to do with the Max 3 lol
Unfortunately, most people are better off waiting for the version from anbernic or powkiddy that takes the innards and puts it in a better shell, buttons and support from devs.

I recently picked up my Miyoo Mini (after your stock alert) and ended up selling my RP2+ because the Mini is so much better for my public transport commute and pockets. I am trying to figure out if I want to replace the RP2+ with an RP3, something more middle of the road like an Odin Lite, or go straight for the Steam Deck for couch gaming after some budget/saving (and wife negotiations).
I really appreciate your reviews and they truly do help in decisionmaking. I am leaning towards the RP3 to tap into the Dreamcast generation/Streaming/Android gaming, then pick up a Steam Deck down the line to target the Gamecube/PS2/Wii generation that I missed out on. I would love to hear if you have a different suggestion!
If your gonna play Gamecube, Wii, PS2.. ild recommend a Odin Pro. Its cheaper, and its quite good at those consoles
@Vectpoli True, but the deck does EVERYTHING, including my massive steam library. Plus now that I have the RP3+, it can do more than I expected. So an Odin, while awesome, wouldn't be a big enough performance bump to justify to my wife haha.... maybe someday a Steam Deck could be in the picture. But the RP3+ is fantastic for now!

@Vectpoli Odin isn't a bad choice though! One of my buddies wants to get a handheld to play PS2 and I'm telling him to go for an Odin. It's great value, if only they could figure out how to make and ship them faster.

I am realising at the end of watching this video that Powkiddy came up with the RGB10 Max and Max 2 from cloning this, which are great devices. I’ll “wait for the clone” 😊

Ouch. It lacks pretty much in every aspect. I really reccomend the anbernic RG353p instead with JELOS. Thanks for another in depth review Russ.
I find the Retro Arena RC1 version very good I cannot figure out how to get es_system to work on RA I can added more systems. it has Retro Arch.

I think that given the proper time and attention this device will surprise people. It doesn't have the massive community behind it some of the others do, but it's got the right people behind it, from kernel developers up to the os and cfw makers. It's just not going to be a fast process. Focus is gathering slowly around updating to the later n2+ kernel which has vulkan support and many improvements, for example. Most Hard Kernel devices are released pretty bare bones and it's up to the community, and cfw devs to decide how they want to use it and adapt it to the purpose. Though the company helps along the way when possible and provides tools. I think that people coming to the ogu expecting something like we get from anbernic or ayn are going to find it's a very different environment. More community driven from the ground up. But that's intentionally done and has been this way for years. As developers we aren't restricted from source code or kept in the dark about certain things.

@RetroGameCorps I urge you to give this device a second change with the latest revision of jelos.
Although the Odroid Go Ultra might not be a great gaming platform, it looks like it can run my Software Defined Radio (SDR). The Linux program GQRX runs on most Linux devices, and it won’t tie up my laptop computer. I don’t need Wi-Fi or touch screen to run it. The screen is big enough to see to use it and the CPU is more powerful than the Raspberry Pi 4 which barely runs at speed.
The gaming would be a extra icing on the cake.
Only 2:45 into the vid, come ooon be a little more generous with the RAM. Perhaps clones cloud carry at least 3GB?

He doesn't recommend the OGU as an everyday device (firmware/ergonomics) but in his Retroid Pocket 3 video he was very positive about it so I think that's the answer to your question

I will go against the flow and say that I really like this device. It´s really tinkerer friendly. The clear case looks awesome. It has a nice SoC. I totally agree that it is not for normal consumers but for a tinkerer like me (guy who dailydrives the PINE64 PinePhone)....this is fantastic, I can do so many thinks with it. The only thing that´s pulling me from buying this device is that I have a Steam Deck. However I am still considering buying it. Great video BTW!

Why is it so hard for manufacturers to position two stereo speakers properly, not on the back side, not on the bottom corner where your hands obstruct...
It's like they gave up! It's really sad, they were the tops 2 years ago and now they've just... it's really sad.
problem with this device is that there is not much support for custom os development for it. specs are pretty good but its useless without a good os.
Hmmm ONLY Amlogic S922? I'm really curious since Odroid was already a capable console on the old but generationally identical rockchip .But the problem is the technological state of emulation ( N64) and on PS2 or Gamecube it won't have enough performance in my opinion anyway :/
Think the issue with these devices now is that you probably already have a device. Able to play the game you regularly play and no reason to buy something else. Or you are saving up or waiting to buy a steam deck. It's the main issue of these devices flooding the market but having the same basic hardware.
Looks like Taki Udon was right when he predicted that "the RK3326 is the end boss that cannot be defeated".

They should start going with the old Saturn model 2 D-pad. STILL the best D-pad ever made. It's not comfortable to press BETWEEN directions on the pad. 8-directional is better than 4! DUH!

Man, as someone whose first handheld was an OGS, this kind of bums me out. Still no built in WiFi? Still no clickable sticks? That sucks. Well I've got a SteamDeck and an Odin Pro, so I guess this is a hard pass for me.
Sadly, the GPIO interface has been completely removed from the board, and it's unclear whether or not it's even supported this time around.
Granted, I never actually did anything with the GPIO on the OGA/OGS, but it's a little disappointing to know that it's just completely absent this time around. Writ large the device is just a bit disappointing.
The GPIO interface is still there but its covered.
the quality of the controls and the hardware in general don't seem so advanced to me, the retroid pocket 3s and 3s + that is coming is much more interesting for me and much better built! if only the retroid decided to put all the spare parts on the site would be very welcome to us customers of the company. It's scandalous not to supply spare parts to customers and force them to have to buy the product again in case some components are damaged !!

The market is really starting to feel quite cluttered … I hope this doesn’t result in a growing slew of less than stellar offerings. While the handheld market has seemed to be pushing the envelope with some sort of innovation, I fear this kind of effort might mark many offerings moving forward.
B-b-but I thought power was the only thing that mattered? That's what I was told by people shitting on my favorite handhelds because they're "overpriced"... it's almost like the actual experience of playing on something is much more than the guts inside it, almost like build quality and feel matters.

It seems like a device for collectors, sure it's powerful but like.. the lack of everything else kinda negates the power. It's just you gotta put so much time and effort into this to make it usable.. Seems more trouble than it's worth.

I bought an android box several years ago with the S922X chip for Emuelec and shortly after that I found that the prevailing sentiment around it was that development had been abandoned and there'd be little if not NO further work done on it by the Coreelec team that was making a lot of the big moves for TV box emulators because of a lack of support from the chip maker. Their disdain at the time was so serious that I practically stopped using the device with any hope of updates. Although to be fair my TV box seems to be further along than this device, but even then the reaction to the chip makes me wonder if "waiting for a clone" is even something viable.

I hate to dump on Odroid, but this is a hard pass. It is a niche product made for people who like to tinker and have hours to devout to try and get the most out of the device. Even then you will still be stuck with not great controls which maybe some youtubers will replace, but who has the time and money to do that.
Sorry Odoid, but fewer and fewer people are willing to put up with these DIY kit loke handhelds than even a couple of years ago.

This is an excellent chip but it's a bit late to throw in a hand held now since the RK 3588 is available.
Rather wait for a hand held with the latter which just destroys the S922X in performance.

The audacity of Odriod releasing a handheld with inferior d pad and buttons is ridiculous no excuse for that
ODROID still thinks its 2 years ago when people would but aftermarket parts for their terible designs. No excuse foe these terrible designs these day.
Frustrating to not have an FPS counter showing so we can accurately observe frame-rates.
