Updated EmuDeck guide: ua-cam.com/video/rs9jDHIDKkU/v-deo.html A few notes (thanks for the all the questions and feedback): - Apparently using the v1.0.0 version of Link's Awakening improves performance; I was using v1.0.1 in my testing - When closing the PowerTools plugin, press the B button to close it instead of the QAM ("three dots") button, which can cause the SD to crash - If you experience slowdown when playing RetroArch, it's likely because you downgraded the display refresh in the Steam settings -- set it back to 60Hz - I am currently not very interested in testing Xenia (X360) because most of those games are ported to PC or backwards compatible with current consoles. I may try a few exclusives down the line. - I also said "across the board" a lot in the video, forgive me.

Regarding the Wii, The system was a single core chip system. The graphics had a multi-chip module with 3 dies that sent data to different parts of the system. Could be simulating the 3 die system as 3 cores.
Great video as usual. What I noticed is disabling SMT yields even better performance than simply dropping thread counts with powertools, so I usually just toggle that off with emulators and older PC games (older games tend to like higher clock speeds over multiple threads which they aren't optimized for anyway).
@@MrBubs-yu4wm SMT is Simultaneous Multi Threading. intel calls it hyperthreading. basically, it has 4 physical cores, but 8 'logical' cores. so there are 4 parts doing the math, but they can each split it up as if 1 had 2 hands writing it out. turning off smt would drop temps and allow higher clocks which works better for older titles that were made when a pc was only able to fit 2 cores to a socket
Will say like most Steamdeck owners, this device has been amazing when it comes to emulation. Even Yuzu through cheats have really improved gaming on this (Crash Nitro Kart is running 60fps ONLY on PC/Steamdeck now). I original thought about having my RP2+ as my lower end 16bit and under emulation device but now everything emulation wise is on my Steamdeck. Dreamcast, PS2, and GameCube are fantastic on this device. Xbox, PS3, and 360 still needed some work but it's getting there and surprising at times (3D Dot Game Heroes runs like a dream).
I struggled with the d-pad and general control layout for games up to the end of the 16 bit era. For Mega Drive, SNES, GBA etc my RG351MP is a far better device, perfect screen for it. For everything after that era (which most other current devices start to struggle with anyway) the Steam Deck is awesome.
@@chphoto37 that sucks. I guess it depends on the individual as per usual. I've had this thing for a good 6 months, really grown to appreciate the controls and gotten used to them. My son struggles as well though, so he prefers my RP2+ as it's not as big/weldy for his small hands. He's used to particular layouts too, so some things throw him off.
Yup, loving the Deck. Afterburner on PS3 runs brilliantly. Mostly playing my old, favourite Dreamcast and GameCube games as well as Vampire Survivors on the Steam/PC side.
I am curious, what about Nintendo DS emulation on Steam Deck? I know there's the touch screen function but a huge part of my favorite games are from Nintendo DS era. I love other retro games as well and I'm glad to see they run amazing in this video, especially PSP.
Your videos are incredible. I went from buying a retroid 3+ to wanting to cancel that order and getting a steam deck. The level of detail you go into is amazing!
Alright that's it, buying a Steam Deck as soon as I finish typing this comment :) man, I knew it would be good but like... games like Spider Man Remastered and God of War (PS4), Yakuza all run great natively AND decent emulation performance all the way up to Switch in one fairly affordable and easy to use system? Its a no brainer at this point. I am glad I waited as its been improved massively in six months and will only get better now its readily available. Now's my time to grab one, I think. And I am so excited. This video sold the Steam Deck to me when I was already thinking about getting one for playing pc games on. Awesome content as always.
Six months have passed since you posted this one, and a video that would be awesome would be another one like this one, showcasing the evolution in some of these emulators and on emudeck itself. Great content by the way!
Tbf, I don't think much has changed from this video. The most notable changes have been: 1. SMT is recommended to be disabled for Yuzu as well until SteamOS 3.5 releases. GPU should also be set to 1100. 1a. Yuzu now has online multiplayer via LDN3. 2. Super Mario Galaxy performance has been fixed now, thanks to the Dolphin team. 3. Cemu now has a Flatpak available to download but only for the 2.0 version. 4. GoldenEye and Perfect Dark has now been optimised for SteamDeck via 1964 GEPD. If these are the only two games you want to play, that's the best option. Other than that, performance has improved across all emulators across the board but only by a slight amount.
@@gacleite no problem! I keep up to date with most emulators through their blogs but there may have been stuff that I have missed. Like I just found out that Citra now has the option to output to multiple windows, which would allow you to one window on the Deck and another on an external monitor.
Would be very interested in your EMUDeck upgrade video once the update is released. I clicked the update icon the other day and it totally messed up the whole system. In the end I had to factory reset that whole deck. I really don't want to do this again as I have spent ages scraping images. So, info on how to update from the current version without issues would be amazing. Thanks for the great content 😉👍.
I’ve been looking for something I can take with me on the go lately and I’m really impressed with this. I may be picking one up soon! Really glad I ran across this before purchasing something like an ambernac system
Ok dude just watched a vid of yours for the first time and wanted to say your audio quality is nuts. I had headphones in and legit had to check my phone to see if the game audio was coming through my phone. Superb the way it makes it feel in front of me
PS2 and Gamecube have always been the holy grail for me, and it's amazing to have a handheld that can run them upscaled on PCSX2. The controls of the Deck also make things like fighting games a joy to play, which is not something I could say about any other retro handheld I've owned. It's also great to have speakers that don't leave you reaching for headphones. Now, if only they'd release a model with a better quality screen I'd be in emulation heaven! That super low sRGB coverage can make games look pretty drab.
I got rid of CEMU since all the games I want to play on it have been ported to Switch and run just as well in Yuzu. EDIT: Culling threads improving performance makes sense actually. By allowing the deck to completely idle those cores, it's able to push the active cores higher and harder since there is more power budget and thermal headroom available.
Exactly that RE limiting threads. The CPU has a power budget, which it allocates to the various cores, however, there isn't enough power and heat budget to clock each core at the highest frequency, so for games that care more about the frequency that multithreading, you're better off limiting it. Would be interesting to see whether it improves Switch emulation, although Switch uses Arn architecture so that's probably part of the emulation overhead.
THANK YOU. This video was legit exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait for my steam deck to arrive. The amount of games I can play is endless. You deserve every like and sub you get.
I really appreciate you including all the titles and info for each game being played in the video. Maybe a small detail, but saves me some time from searching "that one tennis game" enough times to find the right answer lol, as well as others. Great video
Thank you for the summary of all the emulators...made up my mind to try and purchase a steam deck myself..with 2 young kids...this will save me a lot of time to get ahead on my gaming 🐈 alogue 🙂
Might have to get one of these, strictly for emulation. The series S & X is nice to have at home for emulation but to have it on the go & to run properly is other worldly =]
Thanks for the great video (and cat break). While I decided to not get a Steam Deck during the initial shipments, the strides made in the emulation scene/support on this already has me reconsidering, especially for the more modern console generations. Keep up the excellent work!
A bit of a silly thing to say for such a new product but I'm super looking forward to the Steam Deck 2 whenever it'll be released, if the first try is THIS good, man.
It’s interesting to me that you had such good results with Yuzu, I played through the Splatoon games on my Deck in advance of 3 and while the first ran great, 2 ran pretty shakily even at 75% all the way through. I wonder if I need to update my Emudeck! Otherwise I’ve had small quibbles and speed bumps with the Deck as an emulator but it’s mostly a dream for me, basically everything I’d ever want out of a PC.
It can be hit or miss on some games. I’ve even ran into games showing not working on the yuzu compability list and ran just fine on steam deck. Also I learned that if you open a game using the GL instead of Vulcan and let the game render some shader / cache files and swap back to Vulcan some games run better. Also you can use the ryujinx (forget spelling) for games that won’t run on yuzu and I noticed the ones I tested ran fine, although it seems to use a lot more processing power on that emulator some game time is really lowered on battery life. Tons of options if willing to tinker around.
@@BrightEmber What are the settings you have been tweaking the most? Threads? Power? Refresh Rate? Different version of Proton? My deck is on the way, trying to get as much info as possible, as I have not used Linux in a good 18 years I would say. cheers!
@@KatalistProductionsKozzySasha Generally just turning it down to the right amount of threads will fix lag on many emulated games, it varies per game and per emulated console. For example Mario Odyssey runs practically the same as on Switch if not better at points, as long as it's kept at half threads. At full it's still playable, but considerably more laggy in many areas, no reason to play it that way. Mario Galaxy as well, for a less taxing example, runs better at around 3 threads, otherwise it has pretty consistently glitched audio and slowdown. At 3, it runs near perfect
Love emulation on my deck, absolutely out-of-this-world. That said, I still have an emulation PC setup connected to a CRT (tube) TV that I prefer for 8-bit up to Dreamcast/PS2. I provides a much more authentic yet similarly convenient experience.
Everytime I hear about modding Breath of the Wild, I just hope more and more that we'll eventually get OoT-level ROM hacks for it (and previous Zelda games). Something that keeps most of the world layout but makes it more like a traditional Zelda game (dungeons and items) would just be absolutely perfect.
I would love a BotW hack that puts the climbing gear as a lategame item and utilized more varied traversal mechanics. So much of the exploration was trivialized because you could just climb everywhere with a simple button press.
and that's cheap, there's an asus rog tablet that performs maybe 20-30% faster than the steam deck but it's priced at 1499$ so 400 is nothing compared to what steam deck gives you
Emulation gaming on the steam deck is amazing, but I've been running into one issue. Trying to emulate (ps1 and sega saturn so far) in emulation station while docked to a 4k tv (via anker dongle w/ hdmi) has been a horrible, low-frame experience. As soon as I pull the Deck off the dock, everything runs perfectly fine. I haven't found any settings that remedy this, and steam games have been running fine via the dongle.
Your emulator is probably being forced to run in 4k when your regular games are not. Emulation is pretty hard on the hardware, you might have to manually reset the resolution on the Deck to 1080p or 1440p in those scenarios.
Haven't had much luck getting it to work. It sits on a black screen after the initial install. I've seen some people playing it so I'm sure there is a work around. Ended up streaming it from my ps5 instead
Oh nice, there's a lot of stuff I didn't know about when it came to Emudeck. I've been using it for a while, and I didn't even know some of this stuff, which is pretty cool! Also something to note: When it comes to Halo, at least you can play MCC (EAC turned off) and be able to play those Halo games. And even Infinite with full support if you use Proton Experimental. Also what settings/graphics packs did you use for BOTW? I only get about 20fps which really sucks, but I'd LOVE to be able to play it as smooth as it does for you!
My Steam Deck arrives next Friday!! Had to wait over 3 months from pre order to finally receiving it! Everything I have seen about it only serves to build my excitement even more!!!!
pcsx2 is the most matured out of the emulators I have with one of the largest gaming catalogues out of the bunch. The Deck's been good for clearing up the backlog while actually making it worse at the same time.
Wow. This video showed me the true capabilities of the steamdeck. I'm going to go through all your guide videos so I can enjoy my deck like this. Please continue making educational type steamdeck videos!
thank you so much for this. this is the exact video I've been looking for. every other emulation is from when this thing came out and was always looking forward to the improvements (especially dolphin)
The thread thing is actually pretty simple, basically the emulator is trying to send 8 threads of game logic to the Steam Deck CPU, but there is a problem with the CPU scheduler that causes an artificial bottleneck in the rendering pipeline. By reducing the number of cores the scheduler has an easier time spreading the CPU work load between each core.
Looking forward to your updated emudeck guide ✌️ My steam deck arrived at the same time as xenoblade 3 and miiyo mini, so I barely turned it on. Can't wait to finally get to play metroid prime and ratchet and clank!

A few notes (thanks for the all the questions and feedback):
- Apparently using the v1.0.0 version of Link's Awakening improves performance; I was using v1.0.1 in my testing
- When closing the PowerTools plugin, press the B button to close it instead of the QAM ("three dots") button, which can cause the SD to crash
- If you experience slowdown when playing RetroArch, it's likely because you downgraded the display refresh in the Steam settings -- set it back to 60Hz
- I am currently not very interested in testing Xenia (X360) because most of those games are ported to PC or backwards compatible with current consoles. I may try a few exclusives down the line.

Regarding the Wii, The system was a single core chip system. The graphics had a multi-chip module with 3 dies that sent data to different parts of the system. Could be simulating the 3 die system as 3 cores.
No, it's all done singlethreaded.
Great video as usual. What I noticed is disabling SMT yields even better performance than simply dropping thread counts with powertools, so I usually just toggle that off with emulators and older PC games (older games tend to like higher clock speeds over multiple threads which they aren't optimized for anyway).
What is SMT and where do you find the setting to disable it? Thanks!
@@bradhaines3142 thanks! How does one disable SMT and is there a rule for when it is better to do this?
Did you use a specific config for 3D Dot Game Heroes? It kept crashing for me
Oh huh, I always assumed 3D Dot Game Heroes was cross platform.
The most notable changes have been:
@@crimsondespair_9505 great reply! Thanks for the update! Its great to keep up with those improvements
@@gacleite no problem! I keep up to date with most emulators through their blogs but there may have been stuff that I have missed. Like I just found out that Citra now has the option to output to multiple windows, which would allow you to one window on the Deck and another on an external monitor.
@@crimsondespair_9505Btw is emulating on the steam deck easier then on Desktop PC?
Quality made me sub, cat break made me turn on notifs. Great video and lovely coverage!
also, if you wish the Deck had an OLED, look up "decky loader, vibrant deck". it makes colors pop, its adjustable, and makes your screen look awesome!
oversaturation is lame
I'm getting my steam deck in two days. I'm super excited for it and also looking forward to your full guide
Thanks for the great content 😉👍.
can't wait for the tutorial for the emulation tutorial, I've been waiting with setting up emudeck for now
I’ve been looking for something I can take with me on the go lately and I’m really impressed with this.
That super low sRGB coverage can make games look pretty drab.
across the board i would say this is a great video. thanks for making it!
Wind waker says hello
@@WannaKnowMyName I play the GameCube version of that one.
not to mention it favors single/dual core by default
THANK YOU. This video was legit exactly what I was looking for. Can't wait for my steam deck to arrive. The amount of games I can play is endless. You deserve every like and sub you get.
Glad I could help!
Thinking about getting one! How’s the wait time now?!
Just got my email and was able to buy mine yesterday!! So excited I just keep watching this vid
Might have to get one of these, strictly for emulation. The series S & X is nice to have at home for emulation but to have it on the go & to run properly is other worldly =]
At 1:58 What does Custom Directory mean?? I see it whenever I Update my Emudeck but idk what it means🤔is it for an External Hardrive???
Thanks for the great video (and cat break). While I decided to not get a Steam Deck during the initial shipments, the strides made in the emulation scene/support on this already has me reconsidering, especially for the more modern console generations. Keep up the excellent work!
Mine is coming tomorrow! This is my first “pc” so to speak, so I don’t have many steam games, but I’m excited to play some n64 and NES games on it.
A bit of a silly thing to say for such a new product but I'm super looking forward to the Steam Deck 2 whenever it'll be released, if the first try is THIS good, man.
Wait for the SD5 it's gonna be a blast 🤣
I live in the US and I payed for mine last Thursday and FedEx says it's shipping this coming Wednesday!
Boys, it changed my FedEx now say it's coming TOMMOROW!!!!!!!!!

I've found that for almost any emulated game that runs shaky, just tweaking the right settings will smooth it out.
@@BrightEmber Thanks for the info!
My Deck is coming soon, I can"t wait! Thanks for this video!
Love emulation on my deck, absolutely out-of-this-world. That said, I still have an emulation PC setup connected to a CRT (tube) TV that I prefer for 8-bit up to Dreamcast/PS2. I provides a much more authentic yet similarly convenient experience.
Awaiting delivery of my Steam Deck in a few days, so excited.
6:40 - watching this from the future after the release of the Metroid Prime Remaster. 😇
Just ordered mine. Haven’t been this excited by hardware in a very long time.
What's your favorite OoT rom hack?
I would love a BotW hack that puts the climbing gear as a lategame item and utilized more varied traversal mechanics. So much of the exploration was trivialized because you could just climb everywhere with a simple button press.
I'm really looking forward to your upcoming Emudeck video since I have yet to set this up.
I really don't want to spend the 400$ right now, but the Steam Deck looks just too good.
Best 400 bucks i ever spent. And I spent a lot 😂
and that's cheap, there's an asus rog tablet that performs maybe 20-30% faster than the steam deck but it's priced at 1499$ so 400 is nothing compared to what steam deck gives you
Funny enough though this is the best time to order one, right before Amazon Prime Day next week lol mine is coming in a few days.
I'm jealous of how cheap the Steam Deck is in the US. In Japan, the cheapest Steam Deck model is twice the price of a base model Switch.
@@TigerTT I just completed my purchase yesterday in the EU. How long did yours take from payment to ship?
That cat break made me subscribe instantly, nice one my guy
As amazing as the emulation is, I started having a lot more fun with my Steam Deck when I started playing PC games
same here. but its always nice to have the option.
a lot of those PC games are actually ps4 games, so it's still "emulation" 🤣
12:10 "my cat, Chicken," is the coolest thing I've heard today. 🥰💕
Yep Mitchell is right. That is the problem. 4k is heavy on resources.
I love the crt tv 📺 in the background. You're bringing me back.
I'm curious here: Does anyone know how well does PS3's Demon's Souls play on the Steam Deck?
Haven't had much luck getting it to work. It sits on a black screen after the initial install. I've seen some people playing it so I'm sure there is a work around. Ended up streaming it from my ps5 instead
@@FinalNightmare1992 Thanks for the info!
Great video man. Charming, no nonsense, easy to listen, and a catbreak. Subbed
So excited for that PS2 emulation. It’s like I get to live a childhood dream of playing PS2 games on the go :)
pcsx2 is the most matured out of the emulators I have with one of the largest gaming catalogues out of the bunch. The Deck's been good for clearing up the backlog while actually making it worse at the same time.
CAN'T WAITTT for the updated emuation guide 😆😆😆😆
well it's a PC.
Thanks Captain obvious
Can;t wait for the new emudeck guide!
Stunning to see. Can't wait to get my steamdeck

looking forward to the new guide for emudeck :))
Nice video. Thank you! Steckdeck + Emudeck is soo much nostalgic fun!
I want! Excellent overview. Looking forward to playing not just Steam games, but all my retro favorites: especially hard to find gems!
Mine is supposed to arrive on Monday! Signed up for one in April. So excited!
I was liking the videos I found on this channel... then I get to a cat break. Damn it man, now I love it and need to subscirbe.
Cat break! I'm also in Hawaii (Honolulu for me) and am considering getting a Steam Deck. Thank you for your well done video.
Wow. This video showed me the true capabilities of the steamdeck. I'm going to go through all your guide videos so I can enjoy my deck like this. Please continue making educational type steamdeck videos!
What version of the steam deck do you have? Awesome video by the way, thank you for taking the time to make this video and test all these game
My deck just came today....avoiding messing around with it until after work, but I'm going to get into it! Cannot wait!
How is it ?
thank you so much for this. this is the exact video I've been looking for. every other emulation is from when this thing came out and was always looking forward to the improvements (especially dolphin)
Very thankful for this video because I just ordered my SteamDeck this morning, and want to primarily use it for emulation.
Loved the Cat Break and Chicken! hahaha awesome!
Would love to know when that EmuDeck update will drop.
Put in my deposit for the high end model yesterday. The thing that sold me was access to both my massive Steam library and emulation.
Looking forward to your updated emudeck guide ✌️
My steam deck arrived at the same time as xenoblade 3 and miiyo mini, so I barely turned it on.
Can't wait to finally get to play metroid prime and ratchet and clank!
I get my steam deck potentially tomorrow so I’m very much looking forward to the tutorial!
Excellent video, I am going to wait for gen2 of the deck but great to see how many games run well.
