As a proud Westerner, I would not be opposed to Western separation from the rest of Canada. I live in Saskatchewan, we have more in common with Montanans and Texans than we do with anyone from Ontario or further east.

@@yuyu_omni3705 a good example is how states like North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Wyoming produce a disproportionately large quantity of natural resources compared to their population, and the residents of those states have concerns that the highly populated states have intentions to drain them dry for their own benefit, largely because it has happened before, such as charging farmers and ranchers exorbitant prices to ship their goods out of state, charging ridiculous interest rates for loans, and more recently putting in large quantities of windmills that the larger urban centers don't want near them because they are unsightly.
Our society is completely unnatural so it’s just a matter of time before it collapses or theres a war.

While it's nice to have a plan ready to go if things really hit the fan, remember that most of the war plans are just exercises for war planners to think more creatively. That's why the zombie apocalypse plans exist. And the war plans for if hostile aliens arrive. If they can cross space, we can't scratch their paint. But we have a plan. Then the war games for these are also really important because it gives our less command from the top heavy military chances to practice taking initiative and figuring out solutions instead of just waiting for an order, milling about, wasting time.

As a Canadian, I have to say that it’s very on brand for a man I’m assuming lived in Ottawa to forget that the rest of Canada existed outside of Montreal, Ottawa, Hamilton (?), Toronto, and Vancouver.
I’d also argue that Britain would have remembered Canada existed if they did try to implement any sort of trade embargo since we’re America’s largest trade partners (and I think we were in the 1920s as well). But yeah, I can’t even imagine trying to defend our border with the US. At least our “border” with Russia has natural elements that make it harder to cross.

Everyone always obsesses over War Plan Red because of the current relationship between Britain and the U.S. It's important to point out that the U.S. had 18 separate color coded war plans the most important of which was War Plan White.

The U.S. Army was deeply concerned with the possibilities of a Communist revolution after the October Revolution in Russia. This was the era of the original Red Scare. There was a lot of unrest involving industrial workers in this era. There was also a notable anarchist bombing in 1919 that shocked the political elites in Washington. The plan evolved in the 1930's with the unrest during the great depression, notably the veteran riots in Washington DC in 1932. It ended up being superseded by Operation Garden Plot in later decades. The other color coded war plans were big "what ifs," war plan white was the one everyone expected to actually use.

I remember reading something about Canada's Defense Plan 1, the details of it were actually very clever as a tactical commando style operation to delay and disrupt the Americans. But as a strategic plan, it had no legs. As Simon pointed out, the British were not coming.

Lots of people getting very excited here, as is typical when this subject comes up. In reality, the primary reason most of these plans were formulated and updated was as a Staff College exercise. There being considerably more officers to train than realistic potential enemy nations, a new entrant to the college would be set the task of devising a War Plan for a nation that was highly unlikely to ever take up arms against the US or UK. If the student did are particularly good job they might then be given a crack at updating the plans for war with a more realistic enemy.
Actually, both sides continued to prepare for war following the War of 1812, when a British invasion of the U.S. or a U.S. invasion of Canada were considered possibilities.
Based on what was learned from the D-day invasion in 1944, it's pretty widely believed that War Plan Red's rapid amphibious invasion of Halifax at the outset of war would have failed. Looking back on what military planners learned from Normandy, it was nowhere near sufficient in retrospect. The rest is pretty true - whether Buster Brown's plan would have worked or not, Canada's major cities would've been occupied as a matter of "when" not "if," and the UK would not deploy troops in Canada to fight a land war. But in the very likely event that the US failed to secure Halifax, it would be a slugfest on the open water where the Royal Navy stands a better chance. Either way, this would be a disaster for Canada. Best case scenario: a crushing occupation until the US and UK reach a negotiated settlement that retains Canadian independence. Worst case scenario: annexation.

The whole point of a military occupation is to control the population and get them to do what you want them to do. If there is no one living in the vast remoteness of northern Canada there is no need to occupy it. At the most you would need some sort of constable force like the Mounties to patrol it. The difficult part would be occupying the areas with more people, who all live very close to the US.

Basically, yeah, the US could absolutely come in, but then they'd end up dealing with an entrenched insurgency far worse than anything they ever had to deal with in Afghanistan, and they eventually had to pull out of Afghanistan. I'm sure they'd be all "Mission Accomplished" but 20 years down the road, we'd have our country back, and the US would have received another lesson in humility from us.
In Ontario there is just one east-west highway at one point...and a bridge, at Nipigon, just east of Thunder Bay. This bridge failed a few years back and we were screwed.
I am glad we did not go to war with Canada. There is a Peace Arch Park up in above Blaine, Washington. The park covers both in the United States and up into Canada.

But if I was in the US and on insurance the doctors and I would both be forced to use the appropriate tests and specialists until some resolution was made. Thought was given during the civil war, but it would have came from the south through mexico. There was very little to be gained from an invasion from the 49th. Probably there would have been some action near the michigan to threaten washington as a diversion but the gold of california and colorado would have been the goal. It might have been given more serious though had they known just how vital texas would become after the oil strikes there. Ultimately the brits and the french didn't have any real stomach for the logistical nightmare of holding California/Colorado/Texas would become. In the end it would rely on a stable relationship with mexico. Mexico had been in political turmoil partially fueled by the instability of the american invasion after their own revolution. While America wasn't popular with them the idea of becoming a part of another empire was even less appealing to them.
If they knew just how vital California/Texas would become they might have been more amenable to the idea. America did get pretty lucky that nobody paid them back for the kindness they did mexico in 1846. In 1865 the nation was beaten down with half it's major cities in ruin. A concentrated effort from mexico in concert with a major power could have easily taken back texas and california. Had that happened the brits would still be the major power in the world.

There are rumours that both countries STILL have active contingency plans to blow up the bridges crossing the Niagara River on short notice, if necessary. And here's an interesting thing I've noticed while driving between Ontario and upstate NY: The highway between the large American Fort Drum and the St. Lawrence River ... which would be the shortest route for any American land force moving on Ottawa ... was BY FAR the best maintained and smoothest road I've ever seen in the USA, even though that part of NY is quite sparsely populated.
In any case, as a Torontonian, I've occasionally entertained how we'd react to American soldiers in our streets. We certainly wouldn't be welcoming.

Here's a funny story that I'm curious of your thoughts to: my dad was in the USAF, so I grew up on U.S. Air Force bases. During my early teens my family lived in southern Illinois on a base called Scott AFB. One of our neighbors was a U.S. Navy recruiter assigned to the base. This recruiter was married to a Canadian woman who had two sons from a previous marriage, thus both sons were born as Canadians. Years later after he had turned 18, the eldest (named "David") enlisted into the United States Marine Corps and would be stationed at a US Marine base in 29 Palms, California, which was about an hour & 1/2 drive from where we were living after my dad's retirement from the USAF, so when he was stationed there, David would often come stay with our family on weekends.
Apologies for the extended details, mostly that was all about a Canadian born citizen becoming a U.S. Marine. 😄

An American invasion of Canada would go about as well as the American adventures in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Vietnam. Home field advantage means it’s just a matter of time before invaders lose the will to stay and keep fighting.
Those were wars on the other side of the planet. 90% of the Canadian population is within 50 miles of the US border. We're talking about VERY different home fields. Canada is in OUR homefield. Also consider the fact that the entire Canadian power grid is basically just tacked onto the American power grid as an afterthought, like it doesn't even have a separate network like the US has internally. Plus Canada has been systematically neutered for decades by communists like the Trudeaus (elder and younger), your urban centers are defenseless and accustomed to not having rights so it'd just be a change in management for them. Your military has been gutted; your ancestors who wrote the book on war crimes in WWI would be ashamed at modern Canada. Your rural areas would be half as likely to WELCOME the US invasion since they're oppressed by the Ottawa government and culturally more like the US midwest than Vancouver or Toronto or fucking Montreal. If we just offered Montreal full autonomy and like quasi independence, they'd probably take the deal and not help the Ottawa government. Canada is one bad recession from splitting into it's three constitute parts (urban east, rural west and french) since the only thing keeping it together right now is an agreement between urban east and french to tax the rural west into ruin and then use that revenue to pay the french to stay a part of canada. Thats why they cracked down like authoritarian psychos when the truckers were peacefully protesting, if the rural west of canada stops saying "sorry" and decides to change the broken arrangement, the entire country of canada falls apart. Stop reading the BBC and CBC propaganda and maybe you'll understand your own country a little bit better.

Also the Canadian people are vastly different from the government. just because we hate our own government doesnt mean we will like yours. Also, for many people here the ownership and use of firearms is a part of life. So don’t expect annexation to be a cakewalk in the long run.

One of the things glossed over in this video is in the few years after WWI where it could have been possible for our countries to go to war, Canada actually had a while very small but functioning battle hardened military with a massive amount of possible reserves and recruits to be drawn from of which many many of those were also former military. While we would have eventually caved to the US with the Brits noping out, we very much would have lasted a lot longer then many people would have thought. By the time the first world war concluded, Canada had over 630,000 troops with a population of only 8 million. Even more were involved in the homefront. Certainly massively less then the US but more then enough to call up in an emergency and would have been a pain for any invading force. Especially if we turned to guerrilla tactics.

There was no need to fight a war with Canada ultimately as a large section of Canada will be American with in a generation as Canadian political unity breaks down. Not only with the social and cultural differences between Quebec and the British settled western half but Canada is already a political and economic satellite of the US but Canda has to take money from the English speaking half and pay Quebec (...French.....) to pay them to remain part of Canada and this has worn thin with the population of the English speaking portion. Then you have in Canada the same left right political divide you have in the US with the coastal cities being liberal and retarded collectivist and the central provinces being more conservative.
Pollsin Canada already show a large portion of the populace favors joining the US as states and the US has extended them an open invitation to join the US. The strife created by Justin Truedou and his liberal socialists/communists will be the death knell of Canada.
