This powerful song of welcome echoes the women's karanga. It draws hosts and visitors together through a shared memory of loved ones who have been lost from the land, both by war and migration. While showing grief, the singers also express earth-shaking pride in the achievements of those who went away to the war, and later, those who have found a new way of life in the cities.
(Leader) Te Iwi E!!
(All) E karanga e te iwi e
Kua eke mai nei
Kua eke mai nei ki runga te marae e
Mauria mai ra
Mauria mai ra e nga mate o te motu e
Me nga tini roimata
Me nga tini roimata e maringi whanui e
Titiro e nga iwi
Titiro e nga iwi e nga mahi o te motu E hora atu nei e
Rū ana te whenua
Rū ana te whenua, whatiwhati te moana
Aue te aroha
Aue te aroha te mamae i ahau e.
Rū ana te whenua whatiwhati. Hei!

I have heard several groups sing this and I always come back to this group. There is something about the lead singer's voice that haunts me, makes me feel like echoes coming through high mountains and deep valleys, as if the land itself was calling to the visitor to stop and breathe and take in all their surroundings.
❤️ the Pakeha dude doing the Pukana and hearing him that's so Cool
I've watched this video dozens of times and it still gives me goosebumps every time. It is very moving, to say the least.
I am from the other side of the Earth, but this is soooooooo beautiful. Tears were rolling on my cheeks and I kept listening it over and over and over. Cordially thanks for this.
You're welcome

That was amazing love that makes me proud to be Māori and a Kiwi 🥰
Me too, aye goosebumps.
Our tribe, aye!
....is calling to the people
who have just set foot on this marae.
Bring with you memories of the island's dead
and so many tears spilling forth nation-wide.
Look at our people working across the land
spread out far and wide.
Shaking is the ground, quivering is the sea.
Oh, the love and the pain within me.
Shaking is the ground, quivering. Aye!
Composed in the darkest days of WW2, this song draws hosts and visitors together through a shared memory of loved ones who have been lost from the land by war, and these days, by migration to the cities or overseas. While showing grief, the singers also express earth-shaking pride in the achievements of those who went away to the war, and these days, those who found a new way of life in the cities.
how beautiful is the Maori culture and the kiwis embracing it. So proud. Of all colours and nationalities. Ataahua
Beautiful music and dance! I have been twice in Hawaii and enjoyed polynesian music/dance in the polynesian cultural center (Oahu), luaus, etc, and could discover this music.
Everytime I heard/see this music/dance, it comes to my mind sea, wind, coconut trees, happy people fishing, singing and dancing. Congratulations to keep alive these traditions!
Wow. This was stunning. Sending Love and ALOHA from HAWAII. So beautiful. I wish I could see this live!!!
Wonderful !! I am now homesick for Aotearoa !

WAHINE TOA IN THE MIDDLE HAVE A POWERFUL VOICE!... KA MAU TE WEHI!
Beautiful beyond words.
I was at this concert in 2016 @ St. John’s Smith Square, London and it was without a doubt the most uplifting and moving song of the evening. I was aware of the cameras but gave up looking online for it years ago and only came across it the other day. It moved me as much as it did that evening and now I can’t stop watching it, but disappointed I can’t find the starting lyrics to the 2nd part.

Hello, I'm from the UK and find this lovely to watch, very expressive and I am itching to know what this is about...could someone help me with this please....❤
Hi, it's there at the description and here is the translation
Our tribe is calling to the people
who have just set foot on this marae
Bring with you the memories of all our dead
and so many tears spilling forth nation-wide.
Look at our people working across the land
spread out far and wide
Shaking is the ground, quivering is the sea.
Oh, the love and the pain within me.
The ground shakes and quivers, yeah!
@@mossdeeify thank you, I realise it's telling a story and I have watched loads of these on UA-cam with some slight variation in them but it made no sense trying to translate it into English because it lost its meaning and heart and didn't do it justice...I think its beautiful, the hand movements, the musical tone and everything about it. Thank you for helping me. ❤
@@joannaharvey5227 i know right, i first saw the video on Facebook and find really entertaining and fascinating..im from Fiji and my brother works at a hotel near mount Cook and a big All blacks fan and i started gaining interest from then onwards... and elder brothers wife is part Maori also.. so yeah a bula vinaka from Fiji..🇫🇯
@@mossdeeify I came across this a few months ago and find it fascinating...it's like watching poetry in motion...it motivated me into learning about the moari and their origins which is very interesting and I'd like to learn more about them and their language...thank you for telling me what this is about ❤
@@joannaharvey5227 you're welcome 😊

Hermosa musica y danza! Alguien sabe que significa el movimiento vibratorio de las manos? Se que hay mucho significado en el movimiento de las manos en estas danzas.
This is a beautiful rendition. Where can we get this piece/arrangement?
Are there more videos of this performance or does anyone know the name of the choir?
It's the New Zealand Youth Choir. Not sure which year this group is. Regardless, this song is an ongoing staple of the repertoire.
@@because_the_internet Yes NZ Youth Choir. I think this was the 2013/14 group (I recognise some people from school)
