  • Here's a great version of "Black Market" from the release "Jaco Pastorius Word Of Mouth Band 1983 Tour feat Kazumi Watanabe". It's great all around and it's interesting to hear what Kazumi and the band adds to it, but what truly separates this version from any other version I've heard is that Jaco takes a proper single note solo over it. A very cool solo in my opinion, and very much in the spirit of the tune he's soloing over. In other words I think Joe Zawinul would have liked Jaco's improv on this. My only "quibble" with this recording is that Jaco uses an octave pedal throughout. It's sounds cool during the solo at the end, but in my opinion it with have been better if he dropped it during his regular bass parts. As for the fadeout at the end I had nothing to do with it and I don't know why they decided to do the edit for the release. My only theory for the choice to edit is that it could have segued into another tune that was included elsewhere on the album and thus not necessary to have included. Who knows. Full band lineup: Jaco Pastorius - bass, Ron Tooley - trumpet, Alex Foster - saxophone, Delmar Brown - keyboards/vocals, Don Alias - percussion, Othello Molineaux - steel drums, Kenwood Dennard - drums, Kazumi Watanabe - guitar.

Jaco just blew away any bass player I grew up listening to without all that slapping the bass just to get a point across... just pure bass playing!

Yes, he never forgot to groove no matter how complicated his playing got. And as you say he did it without gimmicks like some elements of slapping tend to come across. I like melodic slap bassists like Marcus Miller and Louis Johnson but too often slapping is used more as a demonstration of skill for the sake of it and entertainment purposes with little regard for actual music making. At least in my opinion. Thanks for commenting.

@@musicuniverse1986 Don’t get me wrong I love slapping but from only certain players that did it right but just to express ur self with no tricks is a challenge...and that’s the way I try to play!

Thanks for uploading, very good quality recording too. Do you happen to have solo performances of Jaco other than the Berliner '79 one?

You're welcome Lage. If you mean solo as in being the only instrument onstage during an entire concert the only other recording I have and know of is of the perfomance he did at the Newport Jazz Festival, also in 79'. I did in fact post a snippet of it a while back on my channel that you can search for if you like. I'm not sure if I'm going to post the rest of it though, as I don't think it is was a particularly inspired evening for Jaco. Especially when you compare it to the vastly superior show from Berliner Jazztage. It's not bad or anything, just not quite up there with his most memorable shows. The clip I referred to was the highlight of the show and the rest is in my opinion rather inconsistent and a bit uninspired. And besides the sound quality is not very good and parts of it is ruined by drunken/high audience members who insist on breaking into annoying laughing fits. I'll consider posting more of it at some point but it is far from being at the top of my priority list. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

@@musicuniverse1986 Oh okay, thank you a lot for taking your time to reply. As a bassist myself, I like listening to him solo, even though he's just as good with a band
