  • A quick look at the vintage Simpson 467 DMM I picked up last year plus some new probes from Probe Master. Made in the USA!

Probe Master probes are just great. Their customer service is good as well. Found out about them when I bought probes for my Simpson 260 series 7. As good or better as my best Fluke probes at less the price.

Looks like you plugged the black lead into the "mA" jack, rather than the "COM" jack. That would effectively put the meter's internal current shunt resistors in series with the resistor you are testing, causing the incorrect readings on the lower resistance ranges...

LOL, so I did. Nice catch. That's what I get for making a video while tired right after work.

These are nice meters, I have 2 of the Xerox variant. One of the benefits is that the calibration procedure is reaidly available, provided one has calibration references. Another feature that isn't well known is that the bar graph updates 30x/second, giving an easy indication of (quickly) fluctuating readings. This feature, and the logic functions might give it the edge over the fluke.

Thank you for the info. I'll definitely checkout the bar graph. The Fluke 27 updates quite slowly.

There do exist military versions of the Simpson 467. I have heard they were a "second source" during a time when supplies of the Fluke 27/FM ran low. Mine is one example and came with accessories similar to the Fluke, such as a case and a high voltage probe. (I will say that the Fluke HV probe is much nicer. The Simpson probe looks really hokey.) I might well have tossed the case, as it had been exposed to considerable moisture and the foam had degraded badly.
I like the idea of a battery powered meter in a "benchtop" form factor.

It is a neat little form factor - I'll give it that. Now if it was just back lit 🤔

I am looking at the ProbeMaster 9117 Combo kit for multimeter.

There is a label under the unit that contains condensed operating instructions which is handy if you don't get the
paperwork like you got Bob. Very nice probe set!

Theres a red LED display version of this meter, model 461,and a later "true rms" variant of it too. 461-2r. Those came out in 1975. I think the 467 cams out in 1981 or 82,not sure. They made them for while.

Oh hey, it's my old multimeter 😄 I have the Xerox badged version mentioned on that blue manual, the 600T1616. Mine is from week 45, 1985. There's a barely visible quality control inkstamp inside the battery door cover with the WWYY. Word of warning, *all* the foam will be done for (mushy and sticky, potentially conductive), which is a bit of a problem because they covered the whole front panel in between the buttons with foam and it can ooze out of the button holes and make those sticky and disgusting. Other than that, yeah same problem here. My probes are done for and I haven't been able to find replacements anywhere, which is also the reason why I'm not using it anymore. Oh and the fact that it uses a bazillion discrete components also takes a toll on the battery life. Forgot to turn it off overnight? If that happens twice, the 9V block is done for and it starts measuring complete nonsense (AA battery with 20+V etc) 😅

Ugh, that's good to know. I leave my Fluke 27 on overnight all the time and haven't replaced the battery in over a year.

Thanks for the heads up. I have a very similar Simpson which luckily I got the probes with it. However, for the money and quality, that Probe Master kit is well worth the money. Hope to see you at the Early Television Museum swap meet / convention coming up.

I'll be arrived at the convention on Friday afternoon and staying through Sunday morning.

Excellent. My friend and I will probably get there Saturday. We've been wanting to visit the museum for a while now, so this seems like the perfect opportunity. We're pretty excited to check out all the cool and odd stuff! Is the swap meet Friday and Saturday?

    • @bandersentv
      @bandersentv  Рік тому +1

@@garp32 No, auction and swap are Saturday. Possibly more on Sunday morning. Friday is more social and helping fix the museums TVs.

The new probes are worth more than the meter. If I were gifted one of those I'd have to humanly put it down and load it into the clay pigeon thrower - PULL!

Would probably rather invest in the leads for this meter than paying 35 for a crappy meter. Also I prefer manual ranging. Been fooled one too many times thinking I had 150 volts and looking closer and it's 150 mv. It seems for some reason a new manual ranging meter is almost always made cheaply. Just my opinion anyway 😊

ive put 970 volts through some chinese cat3 probes, the thing is it was only like 0.1 amp maybe? it was just to set the high voltage on a geiger counter flyback which was set low at 400 instead of 900 for the GM tube, the meter was warning me with an alarm beeping I was near the limit of 1000volts on it

I have an old 467 that I "aquired" while in the Army. I need new leads. What # probemaster kit did you get? I noticed probemaster is much cheaper than actual Simpson leads.
Edit; is it the probe master 8023 set?
