- Simpson 260 Series 5 resistance reading functions not working. How I replaced the zero ohms adjustment potentiometer and the 117.7k ohm resistor. This video is simply to show what I did to fix my meter. I take no responsibility if you damage your meter attempting to do what I did. If you are not getting full scale zero adjust deflection on R X 10,000 setting, see video at around 7:40.
Great job I have to Simpson meters. Using them since I graduated NRI SCHOOLS and my father purchased it in 1943. A note, take the battery’s out when you put the meter in storage. Your resistor solution is outstanding
I found all different values of pots like that one.on.Ali express very cheap.they look the same ,for a dollar or two some.less some may be more but most under three bucks.have you tried deoxit 5 contact cleaner,I like the metal film.resistors too.your 260 look to be in good shape .thanks for sharing ,now you have a nice meter, the new ones are about three hundred bucks I hopeing someday to get one too.right now I working on my two different heath kit vtvm meter.next either a signal tracer or a Simpson 260 meter ,somethings.are just nice to have on a work bench ,but that takes time.for some of us ,I am a disabled on.a fixed income..
But love working and learning on.old tube radios.
Good video. Thanks. I liked how you series'd the resistors together to come up with 117
Even though I repair digital circuits and vintage items from decades ago; the analog has advantages that digital meters lack. Both compliment one another depending on the application, "excellent demonstration"
How do you open the case on the Simpson 260 series 5 ? Anyone know? I need to replace the battery. I removed the 4 screws on that back and the cover won't budge.
Any help is appreciated
Thank you
I also have this meter. Just acquired it. Upon inspection, I found a problem. I would like to know the values of the resistor that you show with a "RED" shrink tube (Just above the black one, to the left of the ZERO adjust knob). Mine looks to be a heavy wire-wound with a clear tube over it. Mine had been exposed to some high current and appears to be burnt and I would like to replace it.
schematics for the Simpson are readily available online. I don't have it readily available.

Thank you 🙏
Why not just order parts from Simpson? I ordered many parts from them in the past.
Need moving coil for simpson 260 series 6. Where can I buy
If you are replacing a resistor with 3 series connected ones, than, the wattage can be made lower. For instance, if each of the three has the same ohms value, then three 1-Watt resistors should suffice
Good Job.
Nice!
Thanks!
