  • ‪@walkingwithbill‬ walks the streets of Betancuria the ancient capital the Canary Islands as well Fuerteventura before Antigua took over in 1834, the current capital is Puerto del Rosario. Founded at the start of the 15th Century by the Norman invaders and named after Jean de Bethencourt their leader. It was razed by pirates in 1593 but remained as capital of Fuerteventura until 1834. Nestled in the mountains on the western side of the island you can also see the statues of Guise and Ayose who stand together at the high point of the road that comes from the north. It is believed that they stand at the boundry of their two kingdoms they ruled when the Norman armies arrived in 1402. The more advanced armies of the strangers soon won control of the island.
