  • @walkingwithbill from the popular surfing beach (Piedra Playa) to the south of the town and ending up at the Punta De Toston lighthouses to the north. Cottilo is one of the quietest resorts on the island of Fuerteventura. There are plenty of good restaurants and cafes here and excellent beaches. Punta Del Toston (sometimes called whale point and 4km north of Cottilo) also offers a fishing museum and cafe (closed for renovations Jan 2024) which gives an insight to fishing in the Canary Islands.
The current lighthouse was built in the 1980s and it is the third to stand on the site. The first lighthouse was opened in 1897, and consisted of a 7m high tower on one corner of the single storey keeper’s house. This was decommissioned in the 1950s and replaced by a 15 metre high concrete tower which was used for another 30 years. The current lighthouse is a 30m concrete tower, which is white with red bands and has a focal height of 35m above the sea. Its light can be seen for 14 nautical miles, and consists of a flash of white light every eight seconds.
The importance of the port led to the construction of the El Tostón Castle (Castillo de El Tostón), built in the 15th Century to defend the island from attacks from North Africa. Over time, the fort has become a historical, architectural, and cultural landmark of the town.
