As a light-skinned woman who is actually NOT biracial, and does NOT have any white family members, I am still expected to "claim" my (non-extisent) "white side" rather than identify as BLACK and BLACK only. People poke me about it and don't believe me when I say I'm not mixed...It's weird how that works. You'd think people would be proud of how we wear our blackness proudly, how we identify with it although we COULD identify with another race instead, you'd think it'd be seen as admirable. But in reality it's all about categorizing, labeling, and ultimately- separation. As many people in these comments have said, it seems as if we are going backwards.
We want others to accept us but we can't even accept ourselves, one another. Ironic ain't it?

You might be surprised to find that you are atleast 10 % European....most african americans have all kinds of different ethnicity. You might be 70 % black and 30 % other....or it could be nice just to know what part of Africa you are from and then you can share your results with your followers on UA-cam....it could be a lot of fun.
You're right Raven, but as long as systemic white supremacy continues to exist, especially in western society/media. They'll never be a change, it could continue to go backward. Black people are more accepting of people of color with more ambiguous (European) features than white people are. So do you agree that passing for white or non-black is more demeaning to ones self?

I mean they literally have to think of the saddest moment of their life, which was probably when they got second place to a Black person who got first place, in order not to burst out laughing at what they just heard themselves say.
No man. It's not looking good. AND BY THE WAY, my experience is FAR from unique. Be it white adoptive parents like mine, or a white mixed mother/father...these people are racist before they're parents. They are TRULY race-first and we would be very wise to parrot this ideology so that we can protect ourselves against it...because like it or not...it has seen dozens of civilizations and groups of people exterminated and extinct. It's how they stole the entire western hemisphere.

Grief does trickle down. What many people don't understand is that Black in America is not simply a biological heritage of certain skin colors and hair textures. It's also a psychological inheritance, events and treatment not only our ancestors endured, but the mistreatment our immediate families suffered simply for being black. What our ancestors, parents and grandparents witnessed and went through as black men and women in America and the culture of joy and pain, life and loss, self-love and self-hatred, the fight for pride that developed from those struggles are passed down. And many of us in this generation still witness large remnants of the attitudes and actions that caused the suffering of our parents and other forebears. It's a legacy and mentality in America all progressive, fair-minded people are fighting to overcome with knowledge and respect.
Biracial is a term indicating a person has two parents of separate racial classifications. Biracial itself is not a cultural classification. Biracial and black are not mutually exclusive terms. If a person is bi-ethnic, Italian and Irish for example, they may relate more to the Italian or the Irish side, depending on experience, but that does not mean they are in denial of one or the other.
There's no contradiction in someone describing themselves as a biracial black person. In this case, Alexis was raised by a black family in a black neighborhood as the child of a black man. I would be surprised if she didn't identify as black. This need that so many people have to force their definitions of how someone should identify themselves is very sad and unnecessary. No one should need to justify where they come from to those who have not lived what they have lived. I appreciate this insightful video.

+Creator of Vine Regardless of her appearance her African heritage could cause her to potentially be a carrier of the Sickle Cell Anemia gene. Many "white" folk have discovered their true ancestry after developing the disease which can kill you if not treated quickly. It is an extremely painful illness to suffer and requires many blood transfusions to replace the sickle cells.

A person that's both italian and irish is not just going to say they're "italian" like that's all they are, the way society requires mixed people to say they're "black''.
The fact that being black isn't only a biological fact doesn't mean non-black people are somehow black. In order for those other aspects of being black to come true and be a reality, you have to be black physically. There's no other way for all these things you say are passed down to affect someone unless they physically black (which is the bases of being black by the way; a physical reality). Unless this non-black person holds to some delusion that they're being mistreated as a way of holding to their blackness. That's the only way a non-black person could claim to have inherited some psychological pain or feeling of being worth less.
I hate that people say you're neither black nor white, when you ARE black and ARE white. You're BOTH.

Did you guys even watch the video? You guys are complaining about how she will never face the same discrimination as we do (which is true and she never denied that). Because she doesn’t look black. I know many black people who are black, both have black parents and look white. Or are biracal look black (darkskinned) or just plain white. It’s just DNA it doesn’t always work as expected. Up untill the DNA test she always thought she was half black or half white. If she didn’t show the DNA test and just showed her parents I would just say she was black. You guys are always complaining how black people or biracial people like to pass for white so that they can benefit from the white privilege, but now that there is a black person who is white passing is actually proud to be black you guys get mad?!?! We need people like her to claim black and be proud of being black to show that being black is not, was never and never will be a negative thing! We as black people (not all) want to disassociate ourselves from blackness because we want to show that we are “not like the rest of them” and need white acceptance. Just remember that if we were still at the time of slavery she would still be a slave and considered as black even if she “looks white”.

The problem, however, is that once you are in the position of even having to declare that you are mixed/biracial (for sake of simplicity and relevance to this video, we'll talk -black/-white) that usually opens up the person to having more questions thrown at them to prove their identity (because, of course, the person asking the questions is owed an explanation for witnessing such racial ambiguity!!); their "level of blackness" is questioned...

Jordan I definitely agree with every point you've made. Too many times have I witnessed these exact mindsets to the point where it is a majority opinion. I live in an area that has multiple books written to reflect how a "slave mentality" is still very alive and doesn't seem to have much of a chance of declining any time soon.
I am multi racial. I get negative comments from all races. my mother is half Puerto Rican and half Irish. My father is Black. I consider myself Black. I did not grow up with my biological mother. I grew up with 2 black parents. I never experienced Irish or Puerto Rican Culture. I'm just me, if people don't like me, their problem, not mine. I often get called a dirty half breed by all 3 races. technically, I'm not even a "half breed". I'm more of a tri breed if you want to get technical. lol

I mean just like you my skin is white but I look Hispanic and my sister kind of looks like you(You both definitely have similar hair). I am neither one of those cultures 100%. So technically I am not all of those cultures, but a mixture of them. Therefore yes I consider mixed race a different box.
This is the box I tick when filling in application forms -mixed race. I do not tick white, Hispanic, black and Asian.
If I use this box on many application forms it means that Government and Society recognise mixed race as something unique. Which all mixed race people are.

So you are right and wrong, there are black and white Hispanics, but also middle eastern Hispanics and Asian Hispanics.

Im mixed and was raised by the black side of my family in a black neighborhood, and only saw my father on the weekends (he only dates black woman so even then i was surrounded by loving black ppl) it wasn't untill i started school and was around other kids I started hearing "why u acting black" "oh u think your cute?" "Straighten your hair, you look like you have a mop on your head" and i would be shocked like dude... Im one of y'all... matter fact, my mom is legit darker than most of you😂. And no one believed me until I went home crying and I begged my mom to come pick me up from school 😂 so sadly I never got love from black ppl outside of my family bec they always felt i was trying to fake like I was black or whatever so I was like lemme fit in with white kids. Funny thing.... they know ya ass isn't white and it was just worse. "Why is ur hair so greasy." " ur fat" (cuz i had curves and they was built like sticks ) "ur lips are so big wtf" i was constantly trying to straighten my hair or dye it lose a whole bunch of weight i didn't need to.... untill the point where I realized u can't please ppl for shit. even if race ain't the issue, hurt ppl hurt ppl, if they not happy they always gonna have some shit to say about u. Now adays I have more black or haspic friends just because they understand the struggle and instead of taking shit personal i just educate and compliment. My best friend told me she used to hate me 'till I told her she was beautiful and I wish I had her Hershey skin ( so basically she didnt like me for no reason) . i try to get her to be natural 100% of the time, like doing her hair and skin treatments, so she can feel beautiful in her own sexy brown skin. My grandmother who is all black & light skin like you tells the same story as you. The story of why she didn't just pass in the 60's & marry a white guy who would keep her secret. But yet blacks not understanding. To my grandmother she is black & refuses to were blonde hair to pass. She also tell stories of ppl saying stuff they would never say to black ppl because they assume she was one of them. She doesn't deny her liked skin pledge she tells stories of when she was picked for nursing school & ask to work in doctors because of skin color, were her darker class mates where stuck learning how wipe ass, & do all the dirty jobs of being a nurse in the 60's. My niece is biracial and is always asked - What are you? She is only eight and is so tired of the labeling. She told me she wished she was white and blond so she didn't have to explain herself. I myself have been able to pass as white unintentionally. At first it was an eye opener. In reality as no one knew I was middle eastern having been born & educated with white people it made me realise there is a deep racist underbelly amongst white people. Some white people I grew to loathe but others I grew to love as they were exposed to this environment everyday but still treated everyone the same. It's surprising who is who when you see them in private exposing true racial feelings. I don't hate white people but they are very much tribal in their thoughts & actions mostly. Even though they are perceived as open minded & educated. I have found other cultures don't discuss race as much as whites do or don't address businesses to the colour of the owner ie. using a racial slur to identify the shop s/he bought items from or a garage a car was repaired from instead of calling the business by it's given name. I know white privileges exist as I've benefitted from them but this made me shy away from them. I don't know which I felt more guilty about getting an easy pass or because sometimes it didn't feel just. I am happy to identify as my race than to be something I'm not. As I grow older I feel I'm looking more like people from my background. Is that nature or nurture? I guess I can't truly say

I'm quarter black and didn't know my black grandfather. My father grew up in a white family and I didn't know him very well. Like you I get asked all the time where I'm from and sometimes pass for white. Society defines who's black; under Jim Crow I'd be black. My great grandfather was a slave and I'd be one too in them times. I've been attacked and prejudiced against for being black, so I call my self black. White society calls you black if you're light skinned or not. Bi racial and mixed race are meaningless terms to most whites. Keep up the good work, you're not alone.

But as a fully black woman myself, I find it offensive when mixed and biracial women claim to be black women because there is a difference. Like you said, when people see you, people put you in different racial categories and either elevate or degrade your status depending on their exposure. As an actual black girl, that doesn't happen to me. I'm not white passing (nor do I ache to be bc i love my melanin and blackness), so that privelege to camouflage between different races is not something that I have. In a more light example, it's like when you mix mayo and ketchup--its a wonderful combination. But at that point, it's not just mayo or just ketchup....its both. And to label it one thing would be disingenuous. There's nothing wrong with being mixed (my cousin is mixed too), but for me, the problem comes when people who clearly will not be able to identify with my experiences say they are the same as me.....bc were not (and that's okay).

As a person with a tonne of diverse races in my genes (Japanese, Hawaiian, Australian Aboriginal, Portuguese, Irish, Chinese and More...) I have a hard time identifying with any one race of mine in particular. I've been called so many derogatory names and embraced or rejected by peoplr of my background races that specifically identifying with one is hard. It's always irked me.
No one race claims me, so I guess I just live in that limbo.

Sis is proud to say she is black, because if it wasn't for a black man, she wouldn't be here. Black is not a shade, its your ancestral DNA. And just saying "mixed" does NOT answer the question of your ethnic DNA unless you specify which races your mixed with.
My take on it is, another reason to say black, is to avoid others trying to "knock you down a notch" or to advocate for the "under-dog" and want to remind you of what they think your role or identity should be. There will always be people trying to "clock" you, so by just putting your cards on the table from the start and just saying you're black, avoids you being perceived as trying to hide something.
No offense was meant by using the term "knock you down a notch". I'm assuming that people understand that there are privileges with being white in our culture but there is less privilege with being black.

P.S. I understand being Puerto Rican is not a race. You'll find all races in Puerto Rico just like you find all races in the U.S.A., but if you drive by most public schools in Puerto Rico, most kids are mixed with black. Many look black, many look like the girl in this video, some look white, some look like me, etc. When you drive by an affluent private school in Puerto Rico, then you see the obvious effects of white privilege. Most kids in Puerto RIcan private schools are white.
I had a girlfriend who went to a nice private school in Puerto Rico. I found it ironic she got excepted to Yale and her best friend got excepted to Harvard. The irony was that both these girls were white (blonds) but we all knew that since americans stereotype ALL Puerto Ricans as being "ethnic looking minorities", that gave them a better chance of being excepted as a minority when in fact they weren't.

I know this from personal experience, because I have traveled to and lived in several different countries, and I am perceived different in each one. Puerto Rico has a high degree of mixture absolutely, but you're not going to see people from 100 different countries in Puerto Rico or walk down the street like in NY, LA or Chicago and hear dozens of different languages.
Growing up in California, my entire life I have seen black American mixed with almost any culture you can imagine. I've seen black American bloodlines mixed with Persian, Korean, Russian, Armenian, white American, Mexican, Samoan, Filipino, German, British, Ethiopian, Brazilian, Native American... the list goes on. I've been so exposed to so many different types of people that it is usually very easy for me to distinguish cultures and mixtures.
In truth, the most racially ambiguous people in massive amounts I have ever seen are Brazilians, the ones who actually live in Brazil. It makes sense because even now, Brazil has the highest degree of interracial marriage in the world and is the largest predominantly mixed race country in the world.
If I were to see them anywhere else in the world, and I did not hear them speak, I would not be able to tell where they were from, just because their features generally are so dramatically different. They remind me of those aforementioned ethnic mixtures I used to see in California growing up.

And at that time no one seemed to have a problem with it. I don't get why today it's such an issue. I’m also biracial but I am seen and treated as black because my skin is quite dark, so that is how I’m comfortable identifying, if I had lighter skin I’d definitely specify that I was mixed (and not solely white, as now it’s visually obvious that I’m mixed with black) because any amount of black heritage has an impact on your appearance (our curly hair for example) and overall life experience. So I understand why you wouldn’t want to leave that part out of your identity :))
If people have an issue with you identifying with being black when you in fact, are the offspring off a black parent, that says more about them than you. I'm a light-skin black woman, and I've been "questioned" about my heritage in the past. You are what runs through your veins, people need to learn how to love themselves for whatever they are and whatever they look like.
