Playmates Toys' Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) action figure line is one of the most iconic and beloved toy collections in pop culture history. First launched in 1988, this line was based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise, which originated from the 1984 comic book series created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The toy line played a pivotal role in the TMNT franchise’s meteoric rise in popularity, becoming a cornerstone of the brand alongside the animated TV show and subsequent films.
The Playmates TMNT action figures were inspired by the animated series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which debuted in 1987 and introduced millions of children to the crime-fighting, pizza-loving turtles: Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. These 4-inch scale figures were designed to represent the turtles in their distinct colors, personalities, and trademark weapons: Leonardo with his twin katanas, Donatello with his bo staff, Michelangelo with his nunchaku, and Raphael with his sai.
The success of the core turtle figures led to an expansive line of toys that featured an incredible variety of characters, vehicles, and playsets. Villains like Shredder, Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang were also produced, along with allies such as Splinter, April O'Neil, and Casey Jones. Each figure had unique sculpting, exaggerated expressions, and bold colors, capturing the humor and action-packed feel of the cartoon series.
One of the defining aspects of the Playmates TMNT line was its creativity in expanding the universe of characters. Playmates continually introduced new versions of the turtles with inventive designs, including variants like the "Turtle Trooper" series and the "Mutations" series, where the figures could transform. Additionally, Playmates released vehicles and playsets, including the classic Turtle Van (Party Wagon) and the massive Technodrome playset, which became iconic in their own right.
The playability of the figures was enhanced by their durability and the wide range of accessories included with each toy, making them a hit with both kids and collectors alike. Many fans of the line also appreciated the line’s humor, as figures often came with quirky biographies, fun weapons, and goofy yet action-packed designs.
The original Playmates TMNT line continued production until the late 1990s, enjoying a strong following throughout the 90s, especially due to the 1990 live-action TMNT movie and its sequels. As the TMNT franchise evolved, Playmates regularly reissued and reimagined the figures, staying true to the original characters while modernizing them for new generations. In the 2000s and 2010s, Playmates continued to innovate with new TMNT lines, inspired by new TV shows and movies, but the original 1988-1997 figures remain among the most nostalgic and highly sought-after by collectors.
The Playmates TMNT toy line is considered one of the most successful toy lines in history, thanks to its innovation, humor, and the way it captured the hearts of both children and collectors. Its ongoing influence continues to resonate as new TMNT figures are re-released in homage to the originals, showing the lasting legacy of the Playmates TMNT action figures. - Розваги
Hello Dan! First of all, I want to say that I am a big fan of your work. Having you as a great reference for motu, I have to admit that I miss the content aimed at He-Man fans on your channel. 😉
Great Playmates style, down to having one foot on tippy toes, but i couldnt help but notice that the joints are now purely twist/rotational instead of the ball and socket joints we had in the originals.
I’m personally only in the Kickstarter for the blu ray and book but happy for everyone who had ever wanted these
I would love to see figures of Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird from Playmates, Neca, and Super7 for the 40th Anniversary.
Well, we are the ones doing them officially and we are doing them both in this playmate style and in super seven or neca style… so, sorry we aren’t those companies but we are the ones who have the official permission from Eastman and Laird
Thanks Dan! I clicked “like” before I even started watching, lol. I like the idea of making figures of the creators of these fanchises we love so much. I think it’s a great way to honor them. I’d like to see more of it as well.
Hope they do end up putting a design on Kevin’s shirt. Also I’m hoping the forearms end up getting that Playmates style articulation.
Im torn between the playmates style and the other… seeing them painted makes a HUGE difference though
Love your channel Dan!!
Those prototypes look awesome 👍
Those look fun! Thanks a for reminding me of the kickstarter. I wish the figures had ball joint legs like the classic figures. Eastman and Laird should have candles in all the TMNT movies like Stan Lee in Marvel movies.
I like the shirt you're wearing. Where'd you pic that up from?
OMG, I saw this video after the kickstarter closed!!! Do you know if the creators are going to offer the figures at a later date?!?!
Finally turtles figures we need
Wow wow wow …. Thank you
I would do a cross promotion with Loungefly and give them a mini Loungefly shell backpack accessory with their writing instrument of choice that's storable. How about a U.S. Constitution sticker and a Bill of Rights receipt? Otherworldly adventures await the narrator!
Awesome action figures toys collection ❤❤❤❤❤😊🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
TBH I think the company should put a T-SHIRT design on Kevin's blank white t same with peter and I suggest there favorite TURTLE
You’re absolutely right! We are working on doing pad printed or slide on decals. Probably of the old iron on patches they made back in the day.
@@isaacelliott-fisher9272 well many blessings too what you guys are doing its awesome love it
No slime toys for Halloween this year?
I mentioned online why they never made a Peter and Laird figures...since Jack Kirby was made. Guess someone heard it. I hope Neca makes their version. Playmates is a longgg dead line!
Aren't Peter and Laird the same person?
@@itshobojoe1391Yes. 😅 Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.
@@itshobojoe1391 he mutated into 2 people
Well, we are the ones making these as the officially licensed Eastman and Laird figures. We are also making them in the modern style as well as the playmate style. We have two sets.
Issac and his team wants to make sure all of us Turtles fans get the best of the best. One of the many great features that they're offering us.
...they couldnt even paint these
1:50 What they start sell or they stop selling those
I’d love
These. But can’t swing $220
I backed the project with the toy option, but I don't see anywhere how to choose between the versions. Is that live yet? Or coming later? Because these were not originally available when I first backed the project.
They mentioned at some point that you will indicate your choice in a post-campaign survey, presumably when you are confirming things like your address etc
i watch other youtuber those youtuber said they watch your channel start in 2012
I was gonna pledge for these figures but I'm not putting 150ish down on these or even more
They look so 80's 👍
