The paintings I create make me not care if I lose the game. Excellent. Lovely. Must-have!
I love the fact that Tom really enjoyed this game and one can really tell.
By the way, for anyone watching it afterwards, don't forget to peel off a protective film from every card! It will make them clearer!
I need to grab my copy and do this then lol
They can be hard to peel off though.
@@andrewwagner2165 it gets easier after some games, so no need to do it before the first game ;)
The first time one peeled I though it was low quality and broken.....then I read the warning in the book. Good looking out.
My wife and I have been enjoying this a lot. It is nice to hear the validation.

Friend: That's a nice painting you got on the wall there!
Me: Oh This?
Me: *Takes Canvas off the wall and opens it.*
Me: Wanna play?
Friend: ?!?!?!
Now I need a hammer and a nail... 😁
Funny, cause the same thing happened to me! A friend pointed out that my "painting" looked like a card from Dixit. I pulled it off the wall and said "it's not a painting though... it's a game!". She was very surprised and excited. haha.
@@sk8trmuffinBut did she play the game?
I absolutely love this game and I am so happy that it got a seal of excellence. The only advantage to getting it through KS was extra cards and the bonus scoring (which won’t be in the retail version) but the deluxe version was not necessary. The cardboard components are perfectly fine and those easels you could get for cheap at any art store
so glad i backed this and appreciate that they made a hanging spot for the box to be hung on a wall (it deserves it). The solo mode is fun and i agree Tom, it's a Solid Welcoming Game. Also read a tip somewhere that you can use the wooden painting stands to hold the 4 scoring cards if you don't use them as player painting holders.
cheers as always for the review mate
Everyone in my family LOVED it! This is a fun and unique game. So glad we got it.
I just love it when you do not dump the game components on the table. Thanks for a great review.
The tokens are palettes, not easels 😊
Thanks for another great review Tom! 👏
Mike unboxed this and I instantly fell in love with this game.
Great review! Love seeing you happy about a game that brings people together!
Well-deserved seal of Excellence! Awesome to see how obviously Tom really likes this game. He radiates joy when talking about it!
I backed this game and it's exactly how you say it is: really simple to learn with meaningful decisions, gorgeous as all get out and soooo charming! Love it! It's my new de facto welcoming game!
Sounds like “welcoming game” is being added to TDT lexicon per Tom’s q&a this week. I like the term.
Great review Tom! I immediately went on to the website and pre-ordered myself a copy :)
Frankly I love the components a LOT - really well-produced game. A winner all around.
I am waiting for mine to arrive today, but I was intrigued by how thematic it seems to be. If it translates real artistic concepts into game scoring like it seems that it will, then I will be pleased 😀
Love this one! Thanks Tom!
I backed this on KS and since we got it I've played 2x with 2p and 2x with 4p. It's such a good game. Perfect for a game night when you want to hit something light. You can easily play 2 games back to back in less than an hour and it takes 5 mins to teach. Some of the scoring objectives can be really tricky though.
With how popular it was, I thought it might get a 4 squares review. I've played it so far with my 7-10 year old kids and my mom, everybody has loved it so far.
Could not find this anywhere online, then saw it at my local board game store. Bought it without a second thought.
This was the first boardgame I ever backed on Kickstarter. I'm thrilled to try it out once it arrives in a few days.
I got this game out a few times over the last week. Everyone really enjoyed it. The art is very pretty for sure, but it's also light enough on the rules for just about anyone to get into, yet still has enough depth to keep your brain thinking. The extra awards (friendly/competitive end game goals) also are a welcome addition. Really great game, and really glad I backed it. :)
Revisiting this review after watching the designers unboxing canvas reflection on their latest Kickstarter update. Cannot wait to both the base game and the new expansion… looks so good!
I am super happy this turned out to be good! Local publisher is making the localised version here, so I will pick it up asap.
just played this a few weeks ago of my shelf of shame. Loved it.
We _LOVE_ this game! We call the Scoring Cards, Judges, and the Tokens, Inspiration. This to stay in the theme. Thanks, Tom, for that final house rule. We'll implement it in our gaming group.
which house rule do you mean?
@@MrLinguist88 - The one that everyone votes for the best painting afterward.
I got this for my artist friend at they loved it!
So much fun! The art is almost a mechanism itself because it does distract you from ribbons. My gf and I just have a tough time playing more than twice in a row. lol probably just getting older and the time of evening, it messes with our eyes.
The very first game that I have backed. Its gorgeous!
Well deserved. Such an amazing game
I can't say enough great things about this game. Tons and tons of fun in a smallish box!
This game I saw the rules and the art, and immediately backed because I knew it'd be great to get people to play games with me. Especially as my wife loves art, and I knew it'd appeal to her easily. I kinda wish I had bought a 2nd copy to leave at work (once we're back in the office) because I could see it being played often during lunch.
I really regret not backing this!
It’ll be available for retail and online. I assure you the wood components are not necessary to get but they will also be available separately on Road To Infamy’s site
So do I. The game is now in pre-order, but it ships only to the US, so I’ll have to wait until it hits the stores.
Great news, The big box with all deluxe expansions just went live on Kickstarter
I have backed the game and it is just Excellent! :D
Me too!
I love the clear card idea
Instantly wanted to preorder - only shipping to the US -.- Sad I missed that KS.
Don’t hold back Tom, tell us how you really feel.
I got the expansion yesterday and its just a fantastic improvement on the base game! You should take a look at Canvas Reflections!
I didn't know there was an expansion, I'll have to look into it!
Man, I wish this was a more engaging game. It seems so amazing...I've almost backed it on kickstarter a dozen times in the last week. But, when it comes down to it there isn't much of a game here. Dang...maybe I'll pick it up just to hang it on the wall. I did back Eternal Palace. A much different game, but does have a similar painting mechanism...hmm...idk...
There's been a number of games based on the theme of gallery art, but despite the fact that I love the theme at least in principle and love going to art galleries, until this point I haven't found any of those games very interesting-- this one is an exception.
I backed this as well. It’s a great game. Easy enough to get people into gaming
Now here is a game we can expect a bunch of expansions too.
Road to Infamy (the publishers of Canvas) did a phenomenal job of not just creating a wonderful game, but delivering a very organized a reasonable fulfillment process through KS. Tom seemed to like it so much, I wonder if this title would be a candidate for the Dice Tower essentials line? 🤔
Good Review Tom. I have a short overview on my channel and we love this game. It's not only a fantastic gateway game, it's a stunning beautiful game!
The clear packaging that the game comes in has the title as a sticker so you can put it somewhere on the box
As an artist Id love to find this one
Any idea when this'll be available in stores in Europe? They instantly sold a copy for me.
You mentioned that we should either have this, or one like it, in our collection. What other games would fit the "welcoming" game category?
What was that other game a year or more ago that used these plastic sheets that you overlapped to make something? It had a big tower it came with to drop dice or something through as well. I believe it was a 4x type game.
Didn't know anything about it until the kickstarter was finished
Palette not easel. But you’re right about everything else!
I believe Tom is right, though: palettes are the tokens that you place on the cards, easels are the supports for the canvas when you are painting.
I just saw another comment about the same issue: probably we are referring to different spots in the video, and in one of them Tom said “easel” when he meant “palette”. He sais it correctly as he starts the Components section, though, so that mistake was most probably just a slip of the tongue.
@@tiagomarques9822 He misspeaks at least twice, but that's okay. It's what makes Tom Tom. :)
@@boardgamequeens Indeed, that’s Tom alright. Still one of my favorite reviewers on UA-cam, though. :-)
2:55 Wow.. I did not see that coming at all. But that's a pretty cool gimick. How you make those paintings, I mean.
Does taking the film off make it easier for the art on the cards to be rubbed off, or is the art 'inside' the plastic? FWIW, we've found that having the 'deckbox' facing the other direction (opening facing to the right) makes it easier to pull out the cards.
It was designed/intended to be played with the plastic off of the cards. It looks so much better.
I was tempted to back this but the solo variant really didn't grab me so I didn't pledge in the end.
I'm glad that a game that tries a unique concept actually is a good board game. So many try something unique only so that the gameplay becomes boring after the first game.
I too regret not backing nor buying it post-Kickstartet. I hope it gets sold in stores or local game stores soon.
As of today (2/22) you can still pre-order it on KS for delivery in March.
Seems like it is a bit similar to century spice road, but without the engine.
We played 2 rounds of it today and loved it. I agree, the deluxe components are unnecessary. The game was printed by Panda so even the cardboard ribbons are nice.
Still haven't got mine yet 😔
So Mystic Vale meets Century Spice Road meets Point Salad, with a painting theme.
Unfortunately it's the opposite of being in stores everywhere; it's very difficult to find, other than ebay and the company website.
I was at first those who spoke out how DUMB this game would be... Than now after I've tried it, I ate a huge crow and think this might even be the best game in 2020
It does what it suppose to do really really well, and some more
Should be more critical on your profile photo.
@@TheWildernessEnthusiast what?
Same here...I originally backed and then unbacked because I thought it would be just a boring, overly simple game with pretty components. After watching this review, I went and picked it up from my FLGS. It’s fantastic!
You can use the easels to hold the rules cards!
You know, that's a great idea!
In theory that’s a nice idea, but if you have players sitting around the table, turning the easel with the card is not as easy as just turning the card for you to read, and once you read them once you’re ok with reading them upside down, but not facing away from you, so there’d be a lot of moving the easels around.
I came here thinking it would be a pass, since i already have 'Sunset over water', now I want this one too :(
Just to be clear, is the art a part of the game play? Or is it there only for aesthetics/theme as it seems? Is the core game itself any good? The gameplay itself seemed quite ubiquitous.
Damn should have backed it
Don’t worry, it will be available soon for probably less than it was on Kickstarter and with free shipping. Or get it now from “the gaming goat” for $35 plus shipping if you really can’t wait. Think of all the stuff you could have done with the $30 you saved by not backing it :0
The moment you said, "It has a linen finish. It doesn't need that", I knew we were very different people.
Haha... The world is a rainbow
When I first saw the cover, I thought, is this a Ryan Laukat game?
Hoooollyyyyy... wow, congrats Canvas!! So glad I got this. I wish Tom would have demonstrated the fact that the game can be hung up like a painting, but that is a super minor nitpick!! Now, all we need is an expansion with 2034982340598540329845 more art cards! Ha~!!
Where can I find this? I want it
Goddamit, now I regret not backing it when it was running! Fine, I will look for either the retail version or wait for a new campaign with a reprint, or expansion or something, if I am lucky that it gets a new campaign.
As of 2/22, you can still pre-order it on KS for delivery in March.
why no yellow paint chips. My OCD is not happy.
This game is ridiculously good. One that'll be a big hit I bet. But it really needs a mechanism to allow refreshing the market.
Niceeeeeeeeee
This is the first seal of excellence in a while, isn't it?
This game really is fantastic and so easy to pick up
What's the price point for this game?
Hey I have a question do I need all colours at the bottom to make it a valid painting
Only if you want to get a ribbon point for "composition", all it needs to be complete is at least 3 cards
@@scooter6606 for composition what colour would that be? Or is it a challenge card? And that’s great to hear this game has a major flaw when played with the expansion and that’s never getting what you need and running out of pallets to get somewhere on time before you reach five cards
@@zackerypj9281 it's a rule card, in the video it's the blue one. And what do you mean running out of pallets? You only use the tokens if you want a card that's further along. Every time I've played I still have tokens left over
@@scooter6606 if you play with the expansion it makes you do four if you want the one third over there becomes two rows of cards to choose from and in each row there are four there if you wish to have the third card you must place four pallets behind the third card you start off with five or six though but ya I changed the rules so it’s actually possible to get the cards you need while having pallets left over I just made it where if you wish for the card on the second row you place how many pallets you would need to get to it
I already saw the Dragon's Tomb video for Canvas. Why is Tom reviewing a board game?
I wanted to participate in kikstarter for that game, but creator said they wont deliver it to my country... Sad.
I see you haven't taken the plastic off the clear cards. What a pain that is.
Luck Thumb #7!
I found the hard hand limit really interesting and did keep the game snappy: the game moves a lot faster than you'd expect.
I was also surprised at how the puzzly choices felt relatively simple - not necessarily *easy* but they weren't grindy or brain-burning. It was refreshing actually!
You know its a good game when Tom treat them nice and doesn't splat them on the ground
He stopped doing that
I feel like you purposely said token instead of taken at 2:34 lol
First play of this today. Mixed group of five players.
None of us feel the need to play it again.
General opinion was that it is a great example of theme and crunch having no connection, prettiness for no purpose.
We’re heading back to Dune Imperium and Just One.
1:30 palettes, not easels.
Finally another game with the gloom mechanic.
Not hard. But hard to find
It's not a big deal, but there is a red light on something that is reflecting on the sleeves during the video. Just sometimes, and not a big deal, but... something that is probably easy to remedy going forward, too. (shrug)
I'm pretty sure it's the recording light on the camera.
For some reason I feel this game's mechanics is same as Century Spice road.... the art is good but given the wish list is long...will give it a pass for now
The nice art must compensate for lack of gameplay, which it does. Meh.
It's a bit of a budget Wingspan, though ;)
backed out of the KS as it felt too shallow. Looking at reviews, it still feels too shallow
So it's a prettier Century/Mystic Vale mash up. Meh.. it's a pass for me.
That was a close one. Thought we were going have nothing but positive comments, and that's not what the internet is for. Thanks!
This game is something new! Designers, take note 📝.
definitely sounds like a game you dont want to play the second time as it will get exponentially more boring the next time
