That breakdown speech at the end is the high point of all the Rambo films for me. What a great film.
And props to Richard Crenna for actually parodying his own character in Hot Shots part 2.

Johan Öberg All that frustration just boiled over in that scene. Tremendously well acted by both Stallone & Richard Crenna. Troutman doesn’t say a word after a while, just is a listening ear for John and love when he finally goes to Rambo and just lets him cry on his shoulder.

I LOVE this movie. It's my favorite of the Rambo franchise. I think I was 25-years-old when I read the book. This is such a deep movie about post traumatic stress disorder. I thought it was interesting how Kirk Douglas was originally going to play Colonel Trautmann. I remember getting to see this in the theatre back when Rambo (part 4) was about to be released. I think it was 2008? I just hate when Rambo says, "That's how accidents happen." Worst cringy line in the movie. Great movie. Came out the year I was born ('82), btw. Great review, as always, guys. Very informative and entertaining. Great editing and well-informed commentary.

I grew up in the 80's. The first thing I saw of Rambo was the cartoon series and the action figures from that cartoon series. Then I saw First Blood and I thought, that's not Rambo. Then I saw Rambo II and I found that movie much more interesting. My appreciation for First Blood only started as I got older. It is by far the best film in the series and is actually still underrated by people who dismiss it as a simple action film like many from the 80s and 90s. I think this is a classic.

Are you guys kidding me? You totally ROCK!! I was just heading off to bed and saw the notification for this...and frackin HAD to watch it. I sooo LOVE this film and the Rambo series. It sends so many messages. The story of the vets what gave their hearts and lives to fight and the twaddle they had to endure when they returned not to mention the lifetime afflictions they had to deal with whether it be physical or otherwise. It speaks volumes about NOT judging a book by it's cover or people per say. You don't truly know the hell someone has gone thru til you've walked a mile in their shoes. And even though the Sheriff himself had been in the war...he should have been more empathetic and sympathetic about giving back and paying it forward with a helping hand to Rambo...as we all should with the men and women what gave their all and continue to do so..not just in the war or military...but in all the hardships people come up against. Rambo...is not just the icon for war vets everywhere...but also as in Rocky...he speaks volumes for the underdog...the ones trying to climb out of the muck and mire against all odds whatever it might be. He also speaks volumes for not giving up even when you feel it's all useless. Even the one where he is much older...he gives his all for what he feels is right and who he feels needs a hand. Everything about this film is perfec....is an emotional roller coaster for action...and truth...and survival in every way. And I mean seriously...who didn't cringe when he "fixed" any of his own wounds in these films..you wanted to look away...as you knew it bloody hurt...but you just had to watch with that OMG look on your face. Total respect to the vets ...to the actors...to the souls what actually got hurt making this film and the others...and kudos to the max to you guys for reviewing another film I completely adore...and yeah...I did cry when he had that breakdown at the end...been sort of where he's been -against all odds and truly felt the pain. Absolutely brilliant stuff guys...cannot say enough bout this...have a fab day

"Nothing is over! *Nothing!* You just don't turn it off! It wasn't my war! You asked me, I didn't ask you! And I Did What I Had to Do to win, but somebody wouldn't let us win! And I come back to the world, and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting; calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap! *Who are they to protest me, huh?!* Who are they, unless they've been me, and been there, and know what the hell they're yelling about! FOR YOU! For me, civilian life is nothing! In the field we had a code of honor: you watch my back, I watch yours. Back here there's nothing! Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank. I was in charge of million-dollar equipment. Back here I can't even hold a job *PARKING CARS!* I had a friend... Wes Danforth. I had all these guys, man... Back there I had all these fuckin' guys who were my friends, and back here there's nothing....Remember Danforth? He wore this black headband, and I took one of those magic markers, that I said he found. And mailed it to Las Vegas, 'cuz we were always talking about Vegas, and this fuckin' car, this red '58 Chevy convertible, he was talking about this car; he said we were gonna cruise 'til the tires fall off....We were in this bar in Saigon and this kid comes up, this kid carrying a shoe-shine box. And he says "Shine, please, shine!" I said no. He kept askin', yeah, and Joey said "Yeah." And I went to get a couple of beers, and the box was wired, and he opened up the box... Fucking blew his body all over the place. And he's laying there, he's fucking screaming. There's pieces of him all over me, just....like this, and I'm tryin' to pull him off, you know, my friend that's all over me! I've got blood and everything and I'm tryin' to hold him together! I'm puttin'... the guy's fuckin' insides keep coming out! And nobody would help! Nobody would help! He's saying, sayin' "I wanna go home! I wanna go home!" He keeps calling my name! "I wanna go home, Johnny! I wanna drive my Chevy!" I said *"With what? I can't find your fuckin' legs! I can't find your legs!"* I can't get it out of my head. I've dreamed it seven years. Everyday I have this. And sometimes I wake up and I don't know where I am. I don't talk to anybody. Sometimes a day...a week. I can't put it out of my mind."

Great review! I am huge fan of both the original novel and the movie, and i think that it was a good thing that they are both different, and not only because later sequels gave us some of the best action movies ever made in my opinion, but also because we got one of the best action movie icons. This first movie is the best of all four, even though others are still without a doubt very fun action films even today. I just hope that this new one will also be good and finally, the last.

If you guys watch George Carlins comedy sketch: 'soft language' I think it's called, he explains PTSD quite well. That in WW1, having the nervous system shaken to its core in war was called 'shell shock', honest language that described the condition. Then by WW2 it was renamed 'battle fatigue', or 'operational exhaustion', not as scary, sounds like something that could happen to your car. Then by Vietnam the condition was renamed 'post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)', the humanity sucked out of it and the condition buried under jargon. If the condition had still been called shell shock, some of those Vietnam vets might've got the help they needed at the time.

Did you also catch Chris Mulke from The Hidden/Mysterious Skin as one of the cops? Great film, very bare bones and therefore more effective than 2&3, with John Rambo it was very back to basics and a much better film for just that reason, when he finally goes home you really feel he has completed his journey. It's really the speech at the end of First Blood that turns an enjoyable but relatively brainless action film into a truly great film. After this every boy in my Scout troop got themselves a Rambo knife and the blades all snapped off after about a week.

As dark as it would have been I think the right call would have been to have Rambo die at the end. It would have also saved us from all the sequels which are mostly rubbish.

I don't know how I feel about so much real pain in this film. Truly, I don't know. Interesting facts, but do I respect it or be upset by it?

On the real, you guys always wear t-shirts with short sleeves. Might as well go a little Rambo.
