To celebrate the centenary of British acting legend Dirk Bogarde, STUDIOCANAL is thrilled to announce a brand new 4K restoration of Joseph Losey’s ground-breaking classic THE SERVANT about upper-class Tony who hires a servant, Hugo Barrett, who turns out to have a hidden agenda.
The multiple BAFTA-winning film, which has been meticulously restored will be released this fall in cinemas in UK and France, and in the US with Rialto Pictures, with Home Entertainment releases rolling out across STUDIOCANAL’s territories following the theatrical release.
Cited by Bong Joon Ho as one of five films that influenced his masterpiece PARASITE, THE SERVANT is considered ahead of its time for its ambitious cinematography and its exploration of class and sexual politics in 1960s Britain. It boasts stunning cinematography from Douglas Slocombe (THE LAVENDER HILL MOB, KIND HEARTS AND CORONETS), a fantastic soundtrack by composer John Dankworth (THE AVENGERS, DARLING) and is considered by many to be one of the greatest British films of the last century.

This is Losey's best film, and I do not think anyone can argue about it. The cinematography by Doug Slocombe has some really memorable shots in it. Like the one with Bogarde naked in silhouette while Fox is talking to. him from downstairs. It also has four first class performances--Fox, Bogarde, Wendy Craig and Sarah Miles--in a very neat and forceful adaptation of an intelligent and provocative novel. The last two scenes of the film are utterly exquisite.
