  • Leaving Europe for Africa was a 52 hour voyage. After loading our 1983 Toyota Land Cruiser and checking into our cabin we began our departure from Europe. It started at the Italian Port of Genoa and ended at the Moroccan Port of Tangier Med.
The GNV ferry named "Majestic" traveled between two continents from northern Italy in Europe to the tip of north Africa. We began our voyage on the 'Ligurian Sea," and traveled south on the "Mediterranean Sea" to the point it meets the Atlantic Ocean named the "Strait of Gibraltar." This narrow strait of water separating the two continents of Europe and Africa is only 8 miles wide, or 13 kilometers. It is so narrow that on a clear night you can see the lights on the opposite shore across the water.
Our dream is to drive around the world to meet and know our global community. The world is large and travel is the best means of learning about its peoples, cultures, and their histories--our fellow humans. This video shares our experience of driving from Levanto on the tip of the "Cinque Terre" to Genoa. In many ways the rugged coastline and fishing villages we visited compare to the Central Coast of California. The people are kind, food delicious, shoreline rocky, and panoramic views beautiful.
On board the GNV ferry "Majestic" we met wonderful fellow travelers and overlanders. The crew was always professional and very helpful. Many members of the crew were from the Philippines and South America. These men and women leave their families for 3 to 6 months at a time to support their loved ones. They are well traveled and it was a delight meeting and visiting with them.
All of our documents to enter Morocco were processed at sea on board the GNV ferry before we landed. Our passports were stamped for a 3 month stay and we received an official vehicle card with a QR code, similar to the size of a drivers license, for our Land Cruiser. We were required to show our certificate of title and registration. This vehicle card documents entry into Morocco and must be provided if we are stopped by the police. All of this information was entered via Internet into the Moroccan system. At the port we showed these at the customs inspection and within 15 minutes exited into Morocco.
We enjoyed the 52 hours at Sea!
