    It's really a shame the old id games have such amazing people on UA-cam who barely get any views. Your videos are really fascinating, well put together and narrated in such a calm and composed manner I can't help but return to them.

      That is normal, that is what happens when we get older, i began to understand by talking with people on games.
      Quake and Doom made my infancy, and it was the game people would get shocked only by looking at it.
      It was memorable to us, we know the feeling of trying to do such tricks, the challenges, the feeling of playing in such engine and etc.
      So when we see videos like this, it awakens some "empathy" that make us few impressed by the player, the game, the nostalgia and achievement.
      But think about how would you feel watching things for games that made impact mostly on Gen Z? I normally don't watch much Gen Z game on youtube and i don't know how crazy the tricks are on such games, i think other people may feel the same when seeing a Quake video, even if well made.
      I think lot of Gen Z people are really into Halo and GTA SA as their Quake and Mario... Halo is a cool game, ngl, but i don't watch Halo videos, neither i play. I really like GTA SA, so ignore in this case.
      At least all Gen Z i played with and talked to on online games said that GTA SA was their infancy game just like Doom and Sonic was to me.

      @@coderamen666 That is pretty cool... :)
      Maybe you would love the hype this game had at the time.
      When people talked about a "maybe" future with eSports, people would talk about Quake series...

    My favourite custom map run is probably _your_ 17s easy run on UDOB3. Vore-boosting up to the silver key, then "threading the needle" not just once to get vore projectiles through the bars, but a second time with another boosted jump, using those voreballs to allow you to open the exit door without spending the key on the bars in front. Also a big fan of your 13s easy run on UDOB4, doing a small jump with a direct-hit ogre grenade that's bounced so it hits you while moving at the perfect angle, then doing a double grenade jump off a death knight (one grenade bounced off a pillar so they explode at the same time) to get you up to the exit. It was really fun seeing the improvements on d1m3 (both the old and new versions), as a quadded grenade jump allows the player to skip virtually the whole map and people still found route variations and movement optimisations to get it even faster. There was also that 22 second run on alk_dancing by... oh, it was you again.

    Peter Horvath in his speedruns is extremely good at min-maxing getting multiple different strokes of luck to come together at once. His style clearly involves doing lots and lots of runs and yet making sure not a single one of them is wasted. I have mad respect for the due diligence.

    Thanks for including my old pb1 run! I never thought of myself as a "trick finder", as I preferred trying to optimize small details in already established routes. Thar pb1 demo was hard! The ogre would many times try to chainsaw you, not throwing the grenade when or where you wanted him to do so. Then the fiend would also sometimes try to hit you with its claws instead of launching towards you. When he did launch, it had to be so perfect to work!! Most times he would kill me as there is no armour and the ogre grenade + hard fiend hit causes a lot of damage. Several times I got "very high" and it seemed, for fractions of a second, that I would get on top, because it felt like a pause at the very edge of that second floor, but I fell down everytime!! That demo was the only time it worked! And since I had run pb1 previously with the other route, I had never entered that exit-room from there, I did not know which direction the exit was!! Hahaha. When I got up I was like "which way should I go now??", hence the shaky mouse movement. It caused me great joy to get that trick and I was quite proud of it. Thanks for the memories and for these amazing videos my friend!

    That's crazy. I love Q1 and while I'm not a speedrunner, I think Quake runs are some of the most fun to watch. I really hate it how many (most?) speedruns of modern games are basically "I've clipped out of bounds and I'm just gonna walk towards the exit". That's so boring. In Quake players use the gameplay systems to break the maps in entertaining ways and that's really cool. And it's nice to have someone explain what is going on because a lot of those tricks happen in such a way that it's not possible to understand how impressive they are by just watching a demo. Good stuff! 👍

    Thanks to you (and your channel) I’ve found my love for Quake (again).
    I was 15 when I first came into contact. (Won’t bore you with the whole story, but what gives).
    I remember reading first about it around ‘95 I guess. Then, at a gameshow. It was the first VR game I played ever. So when it came out, ofcourse had to play it.
    I became addicted. We still had a dial-in modem. So at one time I managed to rank up the phone bill to around 900 guilders. That’s around 600 dollars at the time. Anyway, soon after I got into a clan. It become even more addicting.
    I played on a G3 iMac. Can you imagine the dedication I had.
    Quake 1 always had a special place in my heart and thanks to you I found it again. Yesterday I bought the PS4 version. I miss mouse-aim and look. But then again. It holds the feeling well in general.
    As I said before. Great channel and keep it up!

    Those double boosts are just insane! Great video, as always

  • @impact0r
    @impact0r Рік тому

    I am pretty sure the boost at 4:38 is from Shambler's lightning and Death Knight's projectile is more of an obstacle, or neutral at best. If so, then it is far easier as less random-dependent, than described: Shambler will be almost always there, and will always shoot at the player if in line of sight, which is exactly the reason for Peter's detour at 4:32. Peter is hit 3 or 4 times by the bolt which is the source of the boost.
    I have seen and perform thousands of boosts like that on other players during QW deathmatches on DM4 in this very spot - shooting with a thunderbolt from Shambler's spot at a player in the TB/GA area.

    • @quakespeedrunsexplained
      @quakespeedrunsexplained  Рік тому

      You might be surprised. Shambler lightning is MUCH less powerful than the thunderbolt, and standard quake physics are also different from QW. Peter would know better than anyone. But try it in Joequake and prove us wrong ;)

    • @impact0r
      @impact0r Рік тому

      @@quakespeedrunsexplained Right. I have limited experience with SP Q so was not clear whether Shambler's lightning is much less powerful. That might explain it.

      It's part of how to gain speed while bunnyhopping.
      To gain speed, you let go of W as soon as you jump and press A and/or D to strafe to take advantage of the faster diagonal movements, and due to how the physics are programmed in this game, you maintain speed towards the direction you face. Synchronize your mouse movements with airstrafing, and you minimize speed loss and gain a lot of speed.
