Good recap! It brought back some nice memories when I made that record in 2000. :) Even though 22 years has passed, I still remember almost all details about this run. I was planning the route (including health&ammos) for about 2 weeks, and the recording took me about 3 months. Just a remark, I intentionally fired 3 grenades at the ogre on the gold key area to make sure to get the kill. I didn't lost time there as I was walking to the healthboxes behind the GK door anyway. On the other hand, if I would have shooted the grenade for the grenadejump sooner that I planned originally (right after the GK door), then I couldn't have placed it to the beginning of the spike trap corridor, and I would not had time to grab the healthbox which I needed to survive the other grenadejump later. :)
To think this demo was released over 20 years ago. Back then I was talking to Peter rather frequently, he had some great ideas for new tricks and routes on some maps. His very old e1m6_056 Nightmare 100% was the first demo that made my jaw drop all the way to the floor. I was in awe back then, and only a few years later it was rather funny because speedrunning had evolved and everyone was just faster and smoother and could beat all those old demos. To think this e1m3_100 has only been beaten by 1 second (fracions, really) is incredible. When I first saw this e1m3_100 my jaw again dropped all the way to the floor... his timing on everything was perfect. At times it seemed he kept the "fire" button pressed constantly while moving with the mouse perfectly in order to send those grenades whenever he needed them to land. It was and still is a thing of beauty. Loved every second of this video, thanks for it.
There is just something so fist-pumping "YESSS!!!" about seeing that kill counter go up one after the level ends. I've had that happen to me only a microscopic amount of times from all my playing back when I was young, but it's such a cool feeling.
I think speed runs developed out of competition between friends or others online. I remember as far back as 1994? Me and my friend would compete to see who cleared Doom the fastest. When the game Hexen came out that's when I really pushed to finish a game "as fast as i could". Speed running was not a term used in 1995 I know that for sure. I don't really think anyone coined anything until a few years later but could be mistaken. Great video!
Wow! Truly an incredible run, can't believe I've never seen this one before. There's so much to love about this, so I guess I'll just point out that he only unequips the grenade launcher for the briefest moment to shoot that secret door. Thanks for sharing. Edit: actually, a second thing that I want to talk about is that very first grenade boost. He bounces it off the wall to delay it ever so slightly so he can get ahead of it and get a boost from the direct hit on the zombies. That's some inspirational Quake gameplay right there. The Quake 1 grenade launcher is my favourite weapon in any FPS for a reason.
I've almost ran out of old content to watch from you now. It's all been great! Superb video you made here with lots of great context, a very enjoyable watch.
Amazing! I think the fact that you speed run yourself is partly why you were able to notice all the tiny little details that made this run possible. Great job, thanks for pointing it out for the simple folk.
I think I've seen this one before, but it is still amazing to see. It boggles my mind to think about the amount of training that must have gone into perfecting each of the hundreds of precise little actions to be performed with such impeccable timing.
Firstly, THANK YOU! Quake was the first fps I played and I am so glad I found your channel. Reminds me of good times playing this as a kid. Your commentary is great, I watch the videos fully, thinking about all the secrets (shortcuts) I missed. Good on you friend, hope to see more!
just found your channel, this is such great stuff! i was always looking for people who can explain well what's happening and especially with quake as it's one of my favorite games
Absolutely stunning. Any% speed runs are wild, but 100% is on another level, because the players actually use weapons to kill enemies, not just to move faster. Thank you for showing and explaining this amazing run!
20 years old? That kind of gameplay gives save state vibes. Given I am no expert when it comes to the quake engine, it may be worth investigating the demo.
I love your content, and wanted to say that you've come a long long way from this video where literally every sentence has a raised intonation making everything? seem like a question? when it is clearly not? 😅 x
I have a lot of respect for speedrunners. It's about perfection. It's about picking an objective and not resting until you´ve achieved perfection. It's what makes me think humans are great.
The teleporter doesn't open until you hit the button. The button closes the door and starts the long elevator sequence. So luring the zombie to block the closing door is the only way to use the teleporter.
I like A LOT the fact that you have 3d accelerated Quake and bilinear filtering on. Almost everybody who show any kind of gameplay of Quake these days will have bilinear filtering disabled for that "blocky" look, which is so stupid. Sure, in the start Quake was software only, but after just a few month we got glquake and the hardware to play it, so why the "blocky" look is still used? I will never understand this...
The remaster is on Steam. If you're interested in speedrunning then check out this great 'getting started' guide: ua-cam.com/video/kOkv3GCU0VM/v-deo.html
@@quakespeedrunsexplained Thanks for this! I ended up buying Quake from Gog. Got the quake-light running as per the video. Loving the bhop, reminds me of my HL TFC days!
There is no way this is real lol. That's like hundreds of hours of practice. To get those grenades to land perfectly. And time the explosion. He might be the king of quake
Peter wrote in his demo description that he spent three months working on it. There are definitely a few demos out there which took hundreds of hours/tens of thousands of attempts! The recent e4m3 Nightmare 100% is an example, and the subject of a different video :)
"Priborkin" is mock Russian last name, originates from "pribor" meaning some engineering or scientific device, tool or gadget. Technically it could be a real name but I think it was made up to be humorous, because such names are often used in child cartoons, books etc.
Hey pal, loving the videos. Just wondering if you could tone down the swearing a bit. You said... well, I don't wish to type it, but the 'h' word with a hard 'k' at the end. I'd really like to be able to watch these without having to talk to my pastor afterward so if we could keep it a little more rated PG that would be much appreciated. Thank you!

Hey Peter! Well done with these old runs, a head of your time :) Do you still follow Quake speed running and do you still do some running?

What a great video, thanks for making these- more people need to know about the detailed history and legacy behind Quake speedrunning.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!(:
This demo is the reason I picked up the 100% category speedruns!
It's the reason I picked up quake in the first place!

Good observation about the first grenade boost! That was really thrown on the wall on purpose to delay the explosion and speed me up :)
RomAn PribOrkin - a Russian name, a (kinda) well-known guy in quake series tools and mapping
