Afghanistan in the 1950s: Back to the Future [Full Documentary] - BBC News

  • Sixty years ago, life in Afghanistan was very different to the battleground it's become in recent decades. America’s relationship with the country was also very different as can be seen from a remarkable treasure trove of films, shot in the 1950s by American Glenn Foster, and his Afghan assistant Hajji Mehtabuddin.
    Saeeda Mahmood, born and brought up in southern Afghanistan, explores and introduces the films.

      @@michaelvandyne6480 thanks Michael, its a shame some ignorant people who have never met an Afghan will look at what they see in the media and wrongly assume we are all terrorists. This is why western nations are being very careful about how many afghan refugees they let in. They stereotype and stigmatize us. Osama was a Saudi but we got blamed for 9/11 when we had nothing to do with it.

      It’s always the peaceful loving people getting abused. Always. No one should ever have to live in the type of fear I see in those children’s eyes. Something needs to change.
      A president shouldn’t be able to unilaterally end a war or a humanitarian military deployment like Joe did. It should be voted on by a special council that’s been continually briefed on all pertinent intelligence throughout the entirety of the conflict. They always talk about the cost. Who pays the bill? The people! That’s who! So when you spent money our grandkids have to pay back, act a little more responsibly. This is heartbreaking! Everyone 32 and younger probably saw themselves as friends and allies to the US. Can you imagine having your reality just destroyed in a second. Just imagine realizing your guiding light, your beacon of hope, just doesn’t give a shit if you live or die? I don’t need to imagine it! It’s a soul shattering experience, that a big portion of your heart won’t survive.
      The right thing to do would be to go back, and give our military the green light to get rid of the Taliban.

But the vast majority of citizens of the so-called "Western societies" are simply too comfortable or too stupid to understand the significance of this statement. "God bless Afghanistan?" If we were in the 1950s, then I wouldn't think twice about what you just stated, but with the Taliban in control now, I hope that God doesn't bless them. The Taliban has a history of terrorizing their own people, raping women and girls, treating women and girls like property, etc. I hope God doesn't bless them for that, but I pray for the Afghanistan people who are now targets of the Taliban. They have a hit list and have already tortured and killed a number of their own people, which is disturbingly sad and barbaric. I hope that you really didn't mean what you just stated in your comment. 😞

      The withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan was a serious mistake! The West should have stayed there with a certain number of soldiers. Much has been achieved in Afghanistan in the past 20 years. Schools, hospitals and universities were built. Millions of Afghans enjoyed freedoms for the first time in their lives. Armed resistance has already formed in many places in Afghanistan. The West must support these people with money, weapons, ammunition, logistics and training. Air strikes would also be possible. The great danger now is that Afghanistan will once again become a haven for all sorts of Islamist terrorist organizations. The West must now get as many local workers and other particularly threatened groups of people out of this country as possible. This also applies to their core families. The goal must be to overthrow the Taliban and protect innocent people. That does not mean that one country can or should solve these problems on its own. Joe Biden has done a lot of damage to himself and his country! I hope better times will come again!

    I have always been fascinated by Afghanistan. I had read all I could when I was young (I was born in 1950) and my heart sank when I learned that we were going to go there and fight a war. I knew it would not go well. I had read about the British, the Russians, and in ancient times, the Greeks and Persians and how they could never subdue the tribal people in that wild country. I am so sorry for the Afghans, and all they lost from the time the Russians invaded. If only they could have gone on with their efforts at self determination. I can see from the one woman who had to flee "in plastic shoes" to Pakistan that their hearts were broken.

      Pakistan had a big role…they funded the taliban and was the first country to recognise them as a legitimate government in the mid 90s amid all the atrocities the terrorists were committing. Put simply without pakistan there would be no taliban. The talibs were indoctrinated at Madrassas in pakistan that were funded by US and Saudi. Many talibs are pakistani not afghan. This is why SanctionPakistan is trending. Look into it. Afghans are taking a stand against pakistans meddling in our affairs

    This is a wonderful film. And also very sad to learn how quickly Afghanistan changed from a thriving growing country where the people felt safe, to the coup in 1978, then the Soviet invasion; changed a beautiful thriving country for the last 40 years into a place where people live in fear. Afghanistan of the 50s-70s was like a dream. Yet so many Afghans have no memories of what it once was. It was all lost to quickly.
    It makes me think of the possibilities of what is happening in the US now, and how the average American people have no idea how precious our Freedom is and quickly it could disappear.

    • @Sayhoun
      @Sayhoun Рік тому +1

      interesting, I have samilar view of America it is crumbeling similar to various times in Afghanistan history. If Americans don't work in fixing its many internal conflicts from a genuin caring point of view to eachothers, they might end up as Afghanistan at present. Being a military superpower doesn't guarantee your prosperity forever. Afghanistan has over 5.500+ year of military war history of which more than 3.000 as a military superpower. Arrogance, internal conflicts, ever increasing destruction of communication pathways and bridges between groups as well as individeul will lead to a steap fall, no relationship can be build or remain without trust, internal and external conflict overshodew societies fabric turning a snowbol of negative spiral. The deper you are in the harder it is to come out of it. As for Afghanistan its our 3rd/4th time, it might take a century or more but we will find a way out of it as we have done before.

      God does not cause wars, nor does God bring peace. It is the people who must stand up for peace, who must keep the peace, if necessary also by force of arms. You Afghans must ensure peace if you have to have peace. The first soldiers who went from my country (Croatia) to Afghanistan to secure peace came from my unit. Had been trained according to my criteria. Some of these soldiers did not return. For decades, we have given you the opportunity to prepare for peace. Last weekend I talked to my cousin about it. He has served twice for 7 months each in Afghanistan. He did not come to Afghanistan as an occupier. He and the soldiers he led saw themselves as protectors of human values. He and I, like so many people involved, must ask you Afghans the question, what have you done for your country? Despite all the mistakes of the US, its allies with the US, what have you Afghans done for your country, for peace?
      Gott verursacht weder Kriege, noch bringt Gott Frieden. Es sind die Menschen, die für Frieden eintreten müssen, die den Frieden bewahren müssen, notfalls auch mit Waffengewalt. Ihr Afghanen müsst für Frieden sorgen, wenn ihr Frieden haben müsst. Die ersten Soldaten, die aus meinem Land (Kroatien) nach Afghanistan gegangen sind, um den Frieden zu sichern, kamen aus meiner Einheit. Waren nach meinen Kriterien ausgebildet worden. Manche von diesen Soldaten kamen nicht zurück. Jahrzehntelang haben wir euch die Möglichkeit gegeben, euch auf den Frieden vorzubereiten. Vergangenes Wochenende habe ich mich mit meinem Cousin darüber unterhalten. Er hat zweimal für jeweils 7 Monate in Afghanistan gedient. Er kam nicht als Besatzer nach Afghanistan. Er und die von ihm geführten Soldaten sahen sich als Beschützer menschlicher Werte. Er und Ich, wie so viele Beteiligte, müssen euch Afghanen die Frage stellen, was habt ihr für euer Land getan? Trotz aller Fehler der USA, der mit den USA Verbündeten, was habt ihr Afghanen für euer Land, für den Frieden getan?

      Even if they have oil, the bloody country is landlocked and surrounded by mountains, good luck trying to export them in vast quantities. The costs of setting up pipelines, infrastructures and rigs will far outstrip the revenue to be made from oil sales.
