@@clumsiii she's had such a natural progression through her whole career. It's bizarre to think back to Dear Sir, it's almost like a grunge album compared to this.

Loved her from the beginning. Inspired my ass to sing from my soul. Chan Marshall picked up an old Silvertone guitar left by an ex boyfriend and discovered she could use it to accompany her moody vocals. When playing electric guitar she has the best ear for coaxing sweet chunky tone from her Fender Twin Reverb amp. I'd been playing guitar for 15 years at the time I first heard Cat Power back in '95. Chan's unique approach to chord structure prompted me to explore a four string tuning I had worked out. In the Summer of 1993 I was living about 10 miles from civilization in my van and upon retuning my acoustic guitar to play Led Zeppelin's Rain Song I broke two strings. The D string and the high E string ( the skinny one). Knowing it'd be a couple weeks before I could go buy strings I messed with various tunings, settling on F#-C#-C#-F# (or G-D-D-G, but the former sounds better imho). I documented my success with the tuning below. Give it a try, and stick with it for a month or two. 😊 A great tuning to adlib/compose vocal melodies on the spot...sing while you play? *Take off the D string (4th from bottom) and the high E string (thinnest string closest to floor) and tune the remaining strings: F# C# C# F# (or GDDG), but the former sounds better imho.* ---THEORETICALLY WHAT YOU HAVE IS a heavy 'rooty rhythm' sounding perfect 5th strumming _down_ , and a thinner, dynamic contrast perfect 5th strumming _up_ and picking out melodic accompaniment and single 'trigger notes' to inspire your vocal melody . NOTE: Acoustic guitar is by far preferable for this setup. The string tension is perfect and a major sonic bonus is that even though the two center strings are tuned to the exact same pitch (unison in fact), the top C# string is a _wound_ string, while the bottom C# string is not wound. The effect is not unlike that of a 12 string guitar, adding the very desirable 'chorus' effect to your playing which is a unique one of a kind element that you can master like a good conductor brings forward or lays back the duplicity of instrument voices in the orchestra. I usually just watch some random show or movie on the screen with the close captions on while I play and peripherally glance at the screen, pulling words off the screen or react to them in a subconscious way. The great thing about this tuning is that open it is neither Major nor Minor (you need a 3rd (Maj) or flat 3rd (minor) ) with the F# (root) and C# (5th) to create an actual chord. So just adding (fretting) even on note creates a chord! And boom you're off to the races! Throw in yet a different vocal note and magic happens. Suddenly those missing strings aren't missed at all. You are filling the space with active, moving orchestration, as the ear senses a polyphony of rhythms, main melody, and accompaniment. Try it, you might think at first you are limited to obvious blues cliches. But that's where singing can open up new doors by playing off of the vocal phrase and vice versa.. You will soon discover that your subconscious moods will dictate the style and personality of the song, dirge, or who knows what. Try using effects or even MIDI the strings, or your voice even. Try to compose to a silent movie or whatever.
Of course this is amazing, how could I have thought it would't be even for a moment? Always remembering why I love her. So much love and soul and talent
Yes, it's truly great to see and hear Cat Power deliver again. Browsing the comments, though, I am surprised at how few seem to speak out on how timely the song is. It's one for the ages, but it's one for today, too.
Cat Power has always been the music I've wanted to die to Still living in a bathysphere, all these years later Damn, she sounds really good still though. Didn't make me cry though, so def not like old Cat Power, but it's catchy.

I have loved her since my two sons (both music freaks, one a drummer, one an artist) introduced me to her years ago. She still sounds great; what a unique sound!
Anyone know who the woman on guitar and the guy on keyboards are? I’m guessing the drummer is Nico Turner. Just saw them last night (November 20) in Oakland, and the band created a real nice atmosphere.
So Cat Power, is like, her actual (stage) name? It's not like Jethro Tull or Pink Floyd where it sounds like there's a person named that but its actually the bands name?
I've not listened to her in nearly 15 years. Sounds like she's still absolutely amazing. 👏
'Cross-bone style' was the last song I listened to
Ditto. She's incredible. I need to get her new album.
Going to see Chan October 11th at the Agora in Cleveland .
