  • Leather Working: leather sewing machine review - saddle making. How to sew leather with a sewing machine - Leathercraft Tutorial - Leather Sewing Machine. Sewing leather belts, saddles, knife sheaths and holsters with the Cowboy CB-4500. Lets take a look at what this leather sewing machine can sew and stitch first a leather belt single ply around 10 ounces thick then the next item is a piece of suede leather glued to a piece of closed cell foam rubber a mock up of a piece I sewed for a saddle seat and the next pieces you see in this sewing machine review are saddle parts a flank cinch and flank straps double in thickness saddle skirting 13/15 ounce on top and 10 ounce latigo lining.
    As you can see this leather sewing machine and harness stitcher is very versatile and can sew thick and thin leather with ease.
    I like to use white polyester thread and numbers 200 and 230 sewing machine needles. This machine will sew with much lighter thread if that's what you want and like perhaps size 277 and a 180 sewing needle.
    There are two options for sewing guides one is the drop down guide like the one I have and the other is a guide that screws to the plate on the bottom by the walking foot and needle.
    The Servo motor is a real neat thing that allows you to sew your leather a your own pace and as slow as you would like.

    Hi Bruce, I am subscribed because I have seen your work for some time. I was a firearms engraver from Belgium, then worked at Colt's in Hartford and independent for many years. I finished either first or second in the annual engravers guild competition every year I entered, so I do pretty well. I did about 13 different floral styles. I quit 20 years ago to coach college softball. I say all this because my work is art, where as your endeavors are art and craftsmanship. It is the ultimate to me.
    I live in Dallas. I think you have encouraged me to take up leather work finally.

    Thanks, Bruce! I like that open-toe presser foot. I've got an Artisan Toro 4000P, and a Cobra Class 4--both pretty much the same as the Cowboy, but I don't have that presser foot. Of course now I gotta have one! Or, modify one that I have. Thanks for all the great videos!

    Where do you buy your needles? Is it ok to step down in needle size, will this help clean up the bottom stitch

    • @cheaneysaddles
      @cheaneysaddles  8 років тому +1

      I usually get my Schmitz needles from Weaver Leather in My. Hope Ohio. I use Polyester thread and size 200 needles most of the time and that works for me. You might try 277 thread and a 180 needle. Bruce

    Thanks Bruce, I have had my eye on one of these and have been wanting a more in depth view of the Cowboy. I am glad you did it for us. I try to model my work after you with a steady hand that is sure. Why did you choose this machine over the others? I make a lots of holsters that I have been hand sewing as well as belts and IPad covers. I am interested in making fine brief cases and luggage. How thin of materials will the cowboy effectively do?
    Bruce thank you for mentoring us all you rock
    Sincerely,
    Gordon

    Hi Bruce, I'm a beginner in leathercraft and am looking for expert advice on what sewing machine to buy for my startup. I intend to make guitar straps and hobby kits made of 2mm thick leather for the outside and canvas on the inside. From what I've read, it is recommended to use machines with a walking foot (compound/triple feed), servo motor (to control speed among others), 2" wheel, shorter belt, can accommodate thick needles and threads. My dilemma is, the brands that you and other leathercraft veterans recommend are not available here in the Philippines (e.g. Cowboy, Techsew). And I would prefer to buy machines that have local distributors here for assurance of after sales servicing and parts. Brands here with servicing are very limited (e.g. Singer, Juki, Sahl and Brother). There are available second-hand non-mainstream brands but I'm concerned about the availability of parts and servicing. So far, here;s what I've narrowed down my list to: Singer 711C Flatbed Walking Foot, Juki TSU-471 (not sure if it has a walking foot. It has a cylindrical bed. Is it safe to assume cylindrical beds are for leather work?), Sahl TW3-341 (Cylindrical, Compound Feed), and Sahl TW3-7B (Cylindrical, Compound Feed). Would really appreciate your help. Thanks and God bless.

    Hi Bruce, I also would like to ask you when you sew the straps with buckle and leather loop on the machine. Do you finish sewing the loop by hand or do you use tacks to fasten the other end of the loop?

    Hi Bruce.Thank you for nice video. What thread combo are you using for double skirting? 346/346 or 346/277? Do you always go one size down for bobbin?

    I know this is an older video. But I wonder if you might give your opinion. I’ve been dreaming about a machine that can handle leather, but they are very expensive and rarely found used near me (within 5 hours drive). But there are several industrial machines with walking feet available for reasonable prices. Could this be a good starting place for someone who is currently doing mostly belts, chaps, spur straps, halters, bridles and what not, until i can creat a reputation and a business that might merit the larger investment.

      Hello Monique, I got my leather sewing machine from Toledo Industrial Sewing Machines LTD. and am very happy with it. Sewing machines are a big investment but they are well worth it because they last a long time and you can make money by using them. Another company you should check out is www.leathermachineco.com/ Good Luck with your leather working!

    Bruce hello again. you had mentioned in a different video that you used to have a Ferdinand bull 900b why did you change to the cowboy machine? I have a bull 900 it sews great for awhile then it skips? ????? any suggestions

    • @cheaneysaddles
      @cheaneysaddles  6 років тому

      Rueben, I used my 900b for many years and started having trouble with it skipping stitches so I sold it to my brother and ordered a Cowboy cb4500 which is pretty much trouble free. Your shuttle may need replacing I think that sharp tip wears downs a can't catch the tread. Thanks for asking. bc
