i started out doing leatherwork as a hobby and only hand-stitching things. But i got a job in a leather repair shop (mostly leather upholstery) and we use a juki-1541 for normal stuff and a big cobra class 4 for the more belt weight stuff. Absolutely blew my mind once i realized how much more you can do on a machine and in less time.

When you're running cords across the floor you really want to use an over-floor cord protector. Especially when you hide the cord under a rug, it's really easy to smash and abrade the insulation which can lead to a fire.
When you hold the threads at the start of a seam you don't have to yank on them or pull them tight. Just keep a hold of them with a light tension to make sure they don't get yanked back into the machine. Also it's more important to hold the top thread than it is the bottom thread, so if you're starting a seam in the middle of a panel, don't worry too much about the bottom thread and just make sure you keep the top thread under control.
The bags are looking great. I've got an older cylinder arm machine (Juki LS-321) and I really love it.

This is sew (😅) interesting to me. I’ve been keeping an eye out for second hand machines after hand stitching an 800x600 (32”x24”) desk mat for someone. I’m getting older and the hand/fingers are deffo not as nimble as they once were to taking the strain off for long runs etc is totally fine. Excited to see where you go with it Eric. ❤

I've had the Techsew 2700 for seven years. I found it to be a steep learning curve, but the time-saving is worth it. I still prefer saddle stitch for small and personal projects (it's also therapeutic). But I agree with your sentiment... bags by hand take a lot of time and prices the product high.

How cool to see this video just now! I'm not a professional leatherworker like you are, nor have I been doing it for as long. But for as long as I have, I've been handstitching. Because I love to do it, I love the way it looks and I love the durability of a saddle stitch. However, I've also come to the conclusion that stitching the length of a belt back and forth is no fun and the hours required would make the belt very expensive. I've also never used a sewing machine before and just about a month ago I got myself an old Singer 201k because I love they way these old machines look, all in cast iron. Quite different from your machine but I've been having fun playing with it and I can imagine the process you're going through. It's fun to learn to use the machine, enjoy the process!

@@Doctor_Al Mine stitches leather really well. Of course it's a flatbed machine, but so far I've been able to stitch a good amount of leather with it. It does depend if course on what kind of leatherwork you do. But flat stuff like belts, wallets etc that can be done flat, it's been stitching that really smoothly. If I ever need to move on to a bigger machine this one will stay, even if it's just as decoration because this thing is so beautiful!

So cool to see my favourite leatherworker (who learned me a lot) start using a sewing machine.
Finally there is one thing I feel better at! 😂😂
My sewing machine has a big roundish plate for the reverse. This allows me to use my elbow to push it down, so I can keep both my hands on the project i'm working on.

CB 3200. I'm 53 and my hands don't work like they use to. Personally, I like to match the threads per inch to a to a four hole punch. Then I machine stitch everything except the beginning and end. I'll saddle stitch the beginning and end of every machine stitch. It's slower but less likely to break at the beginning or end. Seems to work very well. I have limited luck with the back stitch. Hope this helps. Cheers.

My thread spacing is tight and for some reason I cannot get the look that you have achieved in this video. there's like no dissemination of hole and thread between each stitch. hard to explain. I'm hoping you can start putting out some more videos showing needle sizes with thread sizes for things like wallets, bags, totes, etc. I'm super psyched that you bought this awesome machine that i'm doing my best to master in between my FT job, a business side leather business, and learning how to use the 2750.

We started with a SailRite, but I wanted to do heavier leather and heavier (thicker) thread, and we were able to upgrade to a Cobra Class 4. I do like that laser line option on the Techsew! The Cobra has an almost identical roller arm guide, which is a true time and effort saver. BTW, on my first stitch with the Cobra, I managed to SNAP THE NEEDLE! Learning curves!

  • @Stevieboy7
    @Stevieboy7 4 місяці тому +1

Just an FYI. the reason that the machine is doing single stitching and heel press is because of the needle positioner.
MOST machines don't come with this, so its good to know for people looking to purchase a machine.
For edge binding, the trick is to extend the backside quite far, and then trim off the excess with scissors after sewing!

I have that exact machine, the 2750 Pro. I honestly don't use it very much at all. I have concerns with the durability of the lock stitch over the saddle stitch. Offering a warranty, I don't want my products to come back to me in a couple of years because the thread popped. I have also had issues with maintaining tension for the top thread.
Every time I get an order for something and they want to pay for machine stitching versus hand stitching, I have to mess with the tension. Also changing thread messes with my tension.
It was an expensive early purchase that I made that I have mostly regretted for the past 4 years. I honestly hope you have better luck than I have. I am looking forward to more of your videos on this machine.

Believe me when I tell you that a lock stitch is perfectly fine… it’s a shame so many people think otherwise, especially because many “professional” leatherworkers and influencers always spread misinformation regarding hand stitching vs machine stitching. I wish Eric would correct his past statements regarding durability and repairability of machine stitches. They will last just as long as hand stitches, because the problem was never the method of stitching, but rather the choice of thread and the gradual abrasion of it. Learn to set the tension properly and you’ll be okay…

I’m finding myself in a similar position. I only hand stitch because I don’t have a sewing machine for leather. There are so many sewing machines out there to choose from. Do I need a flat table sewing machine or one that has an arm. It’s somewhat confusing. I do computer bags and iPad bags plus everything else you can think of. I made one for my grandson who needed a large pocket in the front and a long zipper that ran from side to side so that the opening would be wide enough to put a large laptop computer inside. It had a few extras, like a place for keys. The large front pocket housed electronics, wires, etc. This took me a long time to finish hand sewing. I have 4 different types of arthritis and neuropathy. It’s getting harder and harder to sew by hand. I was looking at the Weaver 303 but I think sewing bags would better if I had the arm. I saw one that had the plate that could be removed and then you would have the arm all in one machine which seems to be a good idea. Plus the expense! I guess I’ll figure it out. Best regards, Richard

  • @jamesw.3491
    @jamesw.3491 4 місяці тому +3

Techsew is a decent machine. I bought a Cowboy 3200. On the machine, I think the rep oversold what the normal person would have actually bought. The laser guide and the EPS are upgrades that 1- are not necessary and 2- are quite expensive upgrades. Most people most likely would not have chosen them for a first machine. Nice to have, but the expense VS benefit would not win for someone starting out with machines. Likely later, sure, but not to start. Did they at least also send the table to turn it into a flatbed? Most people would have bought that if it were their only machine.
I am surprised you did not buy a machine sooner. I can get because you lost your employee, it's harder to make production, and that in the end, affects sales/income. I bought my machines (I have a leatherwork flat bed Sailrite and the Cowboy) because of the things I want to make and to reduce labor/increase hourly profits. All it took was for me to sew a couple of belts and I realized quickly that I need machines or I'll never be able to sell them profitably.
On a side note, looks like you were using 207 or 277 thread. Cheapest place I have found for good thread is Toledo industrial sewing machines. Their 1 pound spools are good thread. Downside is they only have the big spools in white, brown, and black. You can get other colors, but they are 1/2 pound spools. Feeding these machines thread gets expensive, so definitely look around for thread deals. Some can be had on eBay, and sometimes other sites. You may also want to get some other leather needles, both for hole shape and thread appropriate size. You'll also need the regular ball point needles if you want to sew fabrics. Leather needles will cut the threads in fabric, leading to fraying.

machine noob here. I see the laser guide as really attractive for someone starting out with machine sewing. I can imagine the mistakes and frustration that would help avoid, and the ruined work and materials... It seems like it would be an easy cost to justify.

Like any other trade, it's an investment in the tools that make you money. A sewing machine can literally raise your hourly take by 5-10 times. If you are doing any amount of work, it does not take long to get back the investment.
You don't find construction companies who work all the time and do pricey work, buying tools at Harbor Freight.

I was looking at a sailrite machine... seems to be decent for leatherwork, imo.

@@RussellWaldrop I bought the sailrite leatherwork. My only issue is that it can only sew up to 1/4" thick. That's how high the presser foot will go. The fabricator might be different, but of course more expensive.

You'll be looking for a inexpensive used leather sewing machine for a long time.
I have seen folks buy a inexpensive machine only to turn around and sell it because they bought a machine that had limited capabilities.

@@AWADesigns The Leatherwork Sailrite was not designed to sew heavy, thick leather. More for flat work like wallets and the like. It's limited on the thread thickness you can use. That's also an advantage because it uses thinner needles, then say the Cowboy 3200. The limitations of the Sailrite are upfront and known by anyone who researched the machine before buying.
Most people want to cheap out buying the first machine, more concerned with cost and not paying attention to capabilities of the machine. I don't regret mine or am upset about the capabilities. I knew what it was before I bought it. For the same reason, I will never be sewing with thread lighter than the 207 in the Cowboy. It's not made for light materials, because the needles are larger and leave a bigger hole. It CAN sew light material, but the holes in the leather will look really odd on those projects. The Sailrite is more suited for lighter materials. There is no such things as "one machine for all leather sewing" unless you ONLY work with one thickness of material. Most of us do not stick to one thickness for everything we make.
As a side note, Sailrite is coming with a cylinder arm sewing machine in the nearer future, but I doubt they are going to be much less then what is currently offered. And whatever they make, it's probably going to be aimed at light material bag makers, not people who will sew holsters and sheaths. So another lighter weight sewing machine. Sailrite tends to pander to crafters and sail repair/makers. So I doubt they will make a machine aimed at heavy leather crafters, like saddle and holster shops. Cowboy seems to pander to any type of sewing with all their offerings of machines.

where's the pattern for that first bag????
been wanting one like that but with backpack straps.
    great review!! thanks!!
ive been mulling the sewing machine idea for a few months.
can't see the cost benefit as just a hobbyist right now.

What kind of leather do you use? I’ve bought a couple of bags from other places and the leather just peeled off. Not sure what it was.
Also do you sell your bags wallets on ebay? What is your store called or website?
I love that you use solar for your electricity as electric company’s have gotten so expensive. Thanks for sharing.

Good video Eric. I do have some questions about the stitch quality though. Is it just as strong as your hand stitching method?
Also does this mean your products as a whole are going to be machine stitched or only the bigger pieces?
No matter the answers I still love the video, love your content, and am excited to see more of it.

Just straps and bigger pieces, I like making smaller carry goods by hand because I like how easy a saddle stitch is to repair :)
Stitch quality is a whollllllllle conversation that many people have different views on! I tend to think that most things in this world are machine sewn and most of those machine sewn things last a long time, so it should be a-ok on a bag or belt
