- Now that we are in Texas, it's time to get that farmhouse, rustic feel into a project! These enclosed, raised beds will make gardening really enjoyable. Trying out some Hugelkultur!
100,000 subscribers. Wow. This project really is a love letter to the beginnings of this channel and hopefully captures the spirit of how I document projects. The very first video I made was the creation of a woodshed for firewood storage; it filled a need that I had at my new house. Two years later, I moved across the country and here I am, documenting the projects and sharing with 100,000 of you. My projects range from musical instruments to shop projects to unique mechanisms, so there's quite a wide range of topics, but somehow you all have the same appreciation for the craft of making things that I do. I can't thank you all enough for your support. I sincerely appreciate it. As I pass this huge milestone, I still have no shortage of ideas for projects, so I will continue to document and share with you all. No filler videos (which means irregular updates) but that just means that you'll get quality projects that are worth your time to enjoy.
Some notes on the build:
Pressure treated with a raised bed? Yeah, there's all kinds of debate on that. I did my due diligence to cover as much of it as possible so that the soil won't be touching it. But most studies have shown that modern pressure treated lumber doesn't leech anything in quantity into the soil, and what it does isn't bad. That said, do as I say, not as I do. Use cedar if you're really concerned.
Hugelkultur?! No, that's not a Schrute family tradition, though it might be used in beet farming. Basically it's a method of making raised beds that uses a fallen tree and mounding soil over it. I took the idea here to try it in the raised beds themselves. There are benefits to hugelkultur. It takes up plenty of space so that you don't have to fill it up with all the way with dirt. The wood, sticks and twigs retain moisture so that helps the soil from drying out. And as it all decays, it adds nutrients back into the soil. We'll see how that works out over the years!
More to come. Thanks for everything!

All due respect for a job well done. I'm reminded of something Andy Rooney said about gardening. "I was never so happy as to see one of my cute little cucumbers growing.
The best I can figure they cost me about 329 dollars each !"
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxbnOKZBE4evMO5V2vroHeCjq6d_MV6wJO I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
That is the most beautiful, clean, neat looking enclosed raised bed I have seen. I made my husband watch so he could get some ideas (cuz I already have some!!!)
That's the most elaborate DIY raised garden I've ever seen. Beautiful job!
Looking forward to seeing this when the garden is ready for the harvest!
Perfect! I’d be tempted to put that poultry fencing across the top, to keep birds and squirrels out.
Thinking the same thing. Or just use some clear corrugated and have it able to vent. Make a killer year round green house.
I believe it is screened across the top. Take a closer look, I could be mistaken ; )
I agree about avoiding bird entry. We used galvanized poultry screen for our coops. Birds still got in to eat up leftover chicken feed.
this is to keep out flightless birds and 3 legged squirrels
That's what I would do as well!!! He did an awesome job!

hahahah
Well done,,no talking just action👍👍💪...Thank you
You're a great builder, and I appreciate that you're a great cinematographer and editor too. You really put in a lot of time and effort into both the builds and their videos.
Yeah verily pretty much the most excellent video editing on the planet
By 8:50 in, im thinking "this is going to be an epic bonfire!"
Love the editing. No useless and annoying intros. No pointless rambling. 🍻
Wow. A big project and a lot of work, but it turned out fantastic! With a light diffusing roof it'll be perfect.
this was mesmerizing to watch! I would enclose with 10ml poly, and a roof, and voila! a greenhouse:) these look like our community beds!
The moment I saw the thumbnail I was like, "oh, for deer, of course!" I had to do some similar high-security farming at my old house :) Love the finishing detail there at the end ;)

I'm a L.O.L. [Little Old Lady] but this makes me want to get some hand tools. Nice, good, cool.

Thank you for calling it soil and not dirt ! Much appreciated !
I love everything about how you make your videos! Nice to see a different kind of project. Watched the video before reading the description, so I was pleasantly surprised to see you adding the logs for hugelkultur! Hope you have a great first harvest.
the best is how aesthetically pleasing each of your videos is
Hello there. Good idea. I watched curiously. You did good. congratulations. Thank you for sharing...........
Excellent way of keepng deer out !!!!
LOVE IT !!!!
I just love how there was no diggint for the poles. its a beautiful video!
My husband built raised beds 12 ft X 4 ft, 5 of them 4 years ago with the corrugated metal. We put cardboard layers then lots of logs and sticks then added soil. We watered every 3 days for 2 weeks to settle the soil before planting. Maybe he didn't show that part because anybody would know about the soil settling. My beds still look brand new and are so easy to plant and harvest. Each bed cost $126 to build but they will last a long time.
Robert Abner using the corrugated metal instead of the wood should be sufficient rather than the wood covered in plastic, correct?
This is a really great raised bed! Congratulations.
You have built what I want in my back yard....I love this. Thanks for sharing your ideas.
A picture is worth a thousand words!!! very easy to follow no words needed really and what a lovely gentle and peaceful change!!! great video thank you for sharing...
I just might put a metal skirt onto my workshop that I'm building. Thanks for the idea!
I wish there was a list of all of the build materials here. Looking to do something similar for my garden next summer.
Love this stuff. Thanks for your vids!
Very intrigued by the addition of the logs and twigs. Interesting idea!
boy! you can't beat those torx head screws on heavy lumber, don't know how we got along without them all these years great build THANX
Man, your video are so much inspiring. Thanks
You...have...skills!!!!!!!!!!!! Inspiring to those who WANT to do what you did. At some point, we have to move out of our comfort zone and venture out to try new things. If we make a mistake, we'll learn. Loved that you used the logs for compost; one of many useful ideas for those logs. The people who gave thumbs down must be TRULY JEALOUS!!! Blessings to you, and thanks for sharing!
That is so cool! Love it! Cheers!
I need this. Well done 👏
I really loved the way you film everything, your eye for storytelling is very strong!
Good point
This is by far the most amazing beds I have ever seen.
Fantastic build, looks great well done, alot of hard work and money went into building that.
Love the way you decided to try out the Hugelkultur method.

Me encantó el proyecto especial por qué se protege de los venados!!! Gracias por el video!!!😊
Very creative! The tin star was perfect!
Wow this is beautiful!
Awesome job. This is similar to the one I want to build.
Beautiful job! ❤
darn - wish I had seen this before I built mine... So nice.
congrats on 100k! Well deserved!
For almost 70% of the video I was like ''Wtf is he doing???'' but I couldn't stop watching
Yes !
Me too. I wish my husband will do one for me.
Lol
@@fantastica1652, He may do this for you, if you have $1000 lying around and you ask him what he would like in exchange.
Haha
Satisfying to watch!
Wow, gorgeous video. Thank you for not talking.
If only I have the skills and tools. I never thought it would be that large just by looking at the thumbnail. Great job.
I just watched all of your videos....amazing gift you have! Subscribed!
This is awesome.. I’m mean ... Just perfect!!! Very inspiring!!👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
What a beautiful garden!
i paint sump oil on my timber projects , still going strong 30 yrs on !
ONe of the best videos I have ever seen!
THANK YOU..I AM IMPRESSED
Masterpiece!!!🤗
Great job! I LOVE it.
Man I just want to give him an impact driver. Cool video though!
When you got to putting up that galvanized star.......I was like.....MERICA!
Actually, that's a TEXAS thang.
@@junglechick13 Texas is in America.....
ha ha! true that!
Yeah, Texas is the bleeding hemorrhoid that is MERICA.
There is a lot of thought that went into this. The use of weed cloth and the plastic liner will extend the life of this well into the future with the minimum of repair or replacement of wood.
I would consider installing a light framework to act as a shed roof so you can hang bird netting, shade cloth, or plastic film roofing.
Each one will increase your harvest by increasing your hot weather tollerance, stop bird damage or act as a season extender in the fall and cloch in the spring. The materal can be reused for many years.
That's amazing! 😃☺️👏🏻
For the gardener who has it all. 😍
You are a talented craftsman and ingenious. I am sure your garden will yield a lot if produce because you have a tender heart of care and perfection. Thanks for all your great ideas. Good job!!!
Beautiful job!
Lovely...happy growing
Well conceived design, great video explication: perfect level of granular detail, yet hardly too repetitious. (BTW, I am a professional cabinetmaker and designer, looking to learn to garden. This tutorial is clear evidence that you are quite a craftsman indeed! Thank you for sharing this!)
Beautiful! Im gonna need a bunch of those on my place in Missouri!
Great work! Let the growing begin!
Making us fellow Texans PROUD!
This build is amazing!
I did a similar project to this 20 years ago. (smaller scale). Nice to see you have used the Hugelkultur method, as the logs decompose you can add more as the soil levels will sink substantially. The weed mat not necessary though. I also lined my treated timber with polythene then a fews years later removed and sealed with a water based non toxic pond bitumen. I don't think you will ever get a return on investment but the ability to pick your own greens is priceless. Thank you for sharing.
Actually it would not take too long to recoup if he intended to start a few hundred trays of seedlings over the winters, either to sell in spring or to eat in succession.
Very very nice, to think that most people have the space to grow some fresh vegetables for their own consumption and still they depend on the not so healthy supermarket food.
Uuuu yaaaa uu yo quiero uno!! Pero un hombre como tu yo diría que lo sabes hacer. Casi todo de maravilla desde. España 🇪🇸 Valencia 😍
Very nice job that is one beautiful garden bed.
Very good, thanks for sharing that
Oh my gosh I just found your channel just looking for raised beds and gardening stuff, I think God that I did because I absolutely love what you do I love this great job I’m definitely a subscriber now. I’m going to start watching all of your other videos. Can’t wait to see what’s next.
major props! so many great things about this. love your passion too, yes it comes through with no words. two things i would suggest ( i learned the hard way) use hardware cloth instead of chicken wire, 1/2" or 1/4" to keep out chipmunks and small critters. also, a top on it....funny how the critters love to climb. awesome job!
Great video. I'm gonna build an enclosed raised garden bed. I love the boards you used.
Hope that isn't pressure treated lumber. If so, the toxins will be absorbed into the pkants.
I'm impressed!!
Great video. Love the thorough communication and connection. For those of you commenting negatively, there really is no need for this type of discouragement. You don’t care for something keep scrolling.....
That looks awesome.
I love this!! I wish I had someone to help me do this.
Very nice job. Mine is very similar to yours but I did put PVC down at the bottom with a cap and a 90 with a threaded nipple so I can water from the bottom. I also live right by the beach. Got buckets of seaweed for minerals. I didn’t use chicken wire. I use one by two galvanized steel baby saver Poultry mesh. Made them into doors that are removable or swing out so you can work both sides of the bed. You’re really going to enjoy them. PS forgot to tell you I put a 3 gallon bucket drilled holes in it with a locking lid. I put my compost in there then added worms. This makes a huge difference. Thanks again for sharing God bless you
Amazing, glad I see done an awesome job. Now I'm going to built just like how you do it but 420cm length. Can't wait
This isn't for a small budget. VERY nice!
Great design and video. The deaf community should love this.
Amazing & beautiful 👍
Wow, Nice job.
wow that is one serious raised bed great work
Wow...awesome job...
Good Work
I love the fact that you used leftover tree logs, branches, twigs and grass and future mulch. Probably the most clever I’ve seen. Excellent work. 🤙🏽😎
Daniel Hobbs as all that wood breaks down it’s going to leach the nitrogen from the soil. It’s actually a great way to kill your garden.
Gwynne Virts you need to educate yourself on hugelkultur
Nice job!
Very elaborate and, most probably, very expensive as well. Good job!
I have to show my husband this. I tried to tell him this is what we should do for our garden but I have one of those husbands that don't like to listen, is hard headed, and wants to learn the hard way instead of listening to his wife!!! If not the raised garden part at least the frame to keep the groundhogs and other animals out of the garden from eating up everything and destroying it! Thanks for the video definitely what I was looking for.
Very nice job. I love. Congratulations
Awesome veg bed and all done by one person!
Very nice beds
I wish I could build one of those in fourteen and a half minutes! Seriously, that is very nice and using Hugelkultur, you'll save water.
This is like a Wes Anderson film. 10:53 is perfect.
Absolutely amazing
Great job- I would like to see it with the plants all grown. I would have soaked the leaves and logs before I added the topsoil.
Awesome design!!
