Country girls/women. Tough as nails, attractive inside and out - down to earth and can do anything they set their mind to. They also usually don't get their opinion... usually form it on their own. I know this is a generic statement and doesn't apply or not apply to all folks from the country (or the city)... but generally speaking - it's more "on" than off.

I use Simple Strap for the same thing! I picked up a load of cedar and and used these. The guys were amazed by it. Way easier than ratchet straps!

Very nice job April. We use scaffold boards cut to the width of the beds, so you can easily plant across the bed without standing on the soil. A standard scaffold board is also a good spacer between rows, after planing one row, simply flip it over and plant the next row on the other side. Happy gardening.

I used a black plastic pond liner which I perforated at the bottom for drainage.Never had a problem and the bed still looks good eight years on.
I'm always so jealous of that awesome shop and assortment of tools you've put together over the years. There's no pleasure like having the right tool for the right job!

My mother gets all the wood dust and chips I make to use to make compost. You know? With things like rest of food, fruits and so on. And that stuff is amazing to a planter like that! 😃

I like the layout of this garden, the exterior fence could double as a trellis for climbing plants.
Kudos to you for all the hard work. You did a good job. I don't agree with the research you did on pressure treated lumber used in garden beds - soil contact and absorptions etc., even if you used soil contact PT and not just the standard off the shelf PT (don't trust everything you read). Again, kudos for all the work and quality of the work you have done, but I think it is more effort and funds than a simpler more practical plan would give. Plastic or any laying system give ants / insects and mold a home. We all know what they are capable of. I don't know if you stain over PT lumber before it dried but allow PT to dry before staining if you don't already know this. In short, its over kill, but looks great and a job well done.

Nicely done, I really like the tall raised beds around the inside of the enclosure along with the enclosure itself. Another plus the gophers could not reach the outside beds.

Always love your videos. FWIW, I used to use 1x or 5/4 for beds, but found it only lasted a few years before rotting from the inside out. I'm nowadays going with 2x material - which also helps with bowing of the material. Of course you could also cedar ($$$), but I likewise use PT wood (much safer than it used to be). My standard is to go with a 4'x10' box that's ~24" tall (3 2x8' boards high). I likewise add little 3/4 tall rim ledges, but only on two sides. 10' boxes also mean that 3/4 EMT (in 10' lengths) work perfectly as a trellis framework, and I use 7x3.5 concrete rebar wire mesh for easy to add / remove trellising for tomatoes, cukes, etc. -Best wishes!

Gravel underneath and around the bottom of the timber helps keep water from sitting against the timber and hence prolong the life of the timber that bit more as well.

Really cool but I wish I had known you were going to add to the middle and I would have suggested a raised 3-5ft high pond in the center. Simple to do and adds a whole different form of gardening.

April, I've had raised beds for over 20 yrs now, the problem is tilling at the end of the year. The older we get, the much more difficult.

Pressure treated lumber is rated for high moisture/marine environments and ground contact but what many people may not realize is that after making a cut through the lumber - all cut ends should be retreated with an application of End Cut Sealer in order to ensure the integrity of the product's rot resistance and to maintain the lumber's warranty. Yes, as crazy as it sounds, pressure treated lumber does have a warranty. A well know and trusted brand of end cut sealer is called: Cut N Seal if you are interested.
Since your first video of making the raised gardens i've wondered how you keep some critters from climbing up and into your garden? Possibly stretching some type of netting over the top?

Good work, as usual. However, according to my research, the plastic liner actually traps moisture next to the wood, speeding up the rot process. Instead, with my timber raised beds, I protected the inside the beds with a non-toxic wood stabilizer and stained the outside (with both products wrapping around the corners of each side timber to meet where they won't be visible). I also recommend either lining the floor of the entire bed structure with hardware cloth, or placing a perimeter of vertical hardware cloth or metal sheeting in the ground around the entire structure to ensure that critters don't burrow into your beds. One of the benefits of raised beds is that you should be able to reach the middle without stepping up in it. That would normally mean about three feet wide.
Yep. I’ve done several generations of raised beds. First was four 4x12 beds made of 1x12 boards; they fell apart in a couple of years and were a pain to reach the middle. Second generation is four 3x8 beds made of 2x12 cedar, much sturdier and easier to manage and they survived a move from one house to another. Third generation will be to raise these beds up about 3 feet and put bottoms on them to again make them easier to reach. That’ll be a project for this fall when the growing season is over. Might raise two of the beds only 2 feet instead of three and grow taller stuff in the shorter beds.
BTW I’m a big fan of Mel Bartholomew’s Square Foot Gardening system.
I was just going to post this. This size is not optimal. Would have been better to build 2 three for beds or 2 1/2 foot beds. One four foot her max if you want to push it.

Used your design but with some Amish sawmill rough cut lumber and different sized raised beds but they came out fantastic.

Thank you. I found your raised beds videos from watching you build one of your workbenches. I wanted to try woodworking but I just can't come up with the space for a shop. That's why I enjoyed making these beds. I also considered a design by Kings woodworking. But these boards are heavy even after sitting for a year. It's Pennsylvania pine and Hemlock boards. Your design looks great and was not difficult to assemble by myself. Ok I won't bug ya anymore lol.
Quick tip, if applicable always screw or nail the thinner piece of material ,this being wood, to the thicker piece for a stronger connection.
