  • The Red Army employed women in combat roles, and one of those roles was as snipers. Over a thousand women fought as snipers, and one of the best and most lethal was the highly-decorated Roza Shanina, dubbed 'The Terror of East Prussia'.

Someone send this to EA and Dice. This is how you introduce women into a WW2 game. Not a British female sniper with a prosthetic arm beating people with a cricket bat. Show women in combat doing what they really did.

If they had to be British then there were plenty of women involved in the military in rear area assignments even Queen Elizabeth II but yeah plenty of other nations to pick from where there were women fighters involved. French Resistance, the Red Army and the Partisans in Yugoslavia are just a few off the top of my head. They literally could have picked any of those and I would have been fine with a woman being on the frontlines. Instead, they chose to insert women into roles they never filled and in some cases even write the men involved in the real world operation out of it. Plus have to give EA props for including a British Officer wielding a katana in WW2. They had to go with a katana when there was a Britsh General that used a broadsword and longbow.

Mark, thanks for yet another excellent documentary. Here's my only somewhat critical comment: as a Russian speaker, I was constantly distracted from the story by misplaced stress: like many other Russian last names her name should be stressed on the first syllable, not the middle or last one. I perfectly understand why English speakers tend to shift the stress away from the first syllable due to the specifics of the English language. Just though to note that her name should be pronounced more like SHAnina, not ShaNIna. But other than that, well done, Sir! Great work!

Great Video! There's something mystical about snipers general. It's not like looking through the sights and seeing a tank, or ordering a artillery strike. Being a sniper is up close and personal. Being a sniper means you follow your enemy's movements to the point of complacency and when they let their guard down the sniper exhales and squeezes the trigger looking through theirs sights as they watch their target's brain explode. It doesn't get much closer than that except maybe hand to hand combat which is gruesome as it is gruelling. During the American Civil War there are many accounts of hand to hand fighting. There were times when like at the battle of Franklin bodies were a couple of feet in depth. So much that some soldiers were killed standing up. You would never think that a rifle butt could do so much damage to the human skull.
    Again great video.

      @@juststeve5542 Indeed. The
Soviets initially didn't want women in combat because of their WWI experiences. Between all the men lost in combat the female non-combatant deaths, plus Uncle Joe's purges, it was impossible to grow the population. Stalin wanted women at home to produce babies when Igor came on his infrequent leaves, It was only after the Soviets grew desperate that they allowed women in specialized combat roles like the snipers and a few fighterb regiments. BY 1944 it was obvious the Germans were going to lose, and Ivan was able to get more leave than in 1942. Stalin ordered almost all the women withdrawn from combat so they could fulfill what Joe felt was their natural function instead of shooting at Nazis.

During the German advances into the Soviet Union (especially 1942) the Germans were appalled to find the bodies of Soviet women. They had assumed that they were fighting Soviet men, until they continued advancing and would sometimes discover women were firing weapons at them. The Germans thought the Russians as having no morality to let women actually enter combat roles, and fighting more fanatically than the Soviet men in cases. Perhaps it was the huge amount of casualties the Soviets suffered in 1941 that led the Germans to be fighting women. The Germans called them witches.

With all due respect for Roza Shanina's undoubted skill, the claim that eleven female Soviet snipers defeated fifty German soldiers in close quarter combat in a trench sounds very much like Soviet propaganda.
They would have been outnumbered almost five to one.
Eleven bolt-action rifles (probably) against multiple submachine guns in a trench is a bad idea.
It's a very different type of combat from what the snipers were used to but one which their German opponents (reasonably assuming that they were non-sniper infantry) should have been much more familiar with.
Higher upper body strength at close quarters would have been a significant German advantage.

Don’t think so. Recently read about a couple of women in the Dutch resistance. They were pretty and used to flirt with germans and collaborators in bars. Once they arrived in a secluded area for some ’fun’, they pulled up a gun and shot the Nazis point blank. She mentioned that the initial instinct was to almost help the bewildered target up on his legs again. But they remained professional and went on new missions against new targets.
