Ooo, wow, glad somebody saved this. I remember watching this review on the old Channel Awesome site and it reeaaalllly made me intrigued... but apparently it was lost to the ages after Blip went belly up. It wasn’t transferred to the Cinema Snob/Stoned Gremlin site, so I just kinda assumed it was gone for good.
Watching A serbian film on a first date! lol. I remember I met two guys at a party and they suggested I go back with them and watch it? I'm very glad I declined. Saw it today and urghh!
Calling Saló pure exploitation is a seriously simple-minded view of the film. Believing that a filmmaker like Pasolini would waste his time on making a simple shock-flick is silly nonsense. Sure, the content of the film is vile and extreme, but it's clearly a political piece about human evil. When it comes to A Serbian Film, I think it's much too over-the-top to be taken seriously. It's basically like the Aristocrats joke, where it constantly tries to top itself. It's so extreme that its unintentionally (?) funny. But it's really well-made, with beautiful cinematography and very good performances. Would love to see the director make something a bit more mainstream, he's got some real talent.
I think that’s kind of the point though. It’s an angry film that is literally screaming “you want a victim? We’ll give you a fucking victim.” I think it borders on self parody because it is the equivalent of an angry satirical cartoon. The film is spitting its anger and frustration back at its country of origin and more importantly its politically correct and safely minded film industry. Sure it’s main point is a very nihilistic “they fuck you from birth, they fuck you through life and then fuck you in death.” But I kind of respect that honesty about itself. My mind came around on A Serbian Film after seeing the other Serbian Film - Life and Death of a Porno Gang. You don’t end up with two similarly minded films using the same metaphors for their country and not have them mean anything. I do think Life and Death is a more consistent film with its point to be made. I think A Serbian Film is more than just exploitation for the sake of exploitation. I think it’s an angry jet black satirical cartoon depiction of the state of affairs in Serbia and what the country has endured. I understand why people hate it, but I don’t think it’s an empty minded shock for shock sake. It’s an angry minded film spitting venom back at its country of origin. Go watch Lampyman’s review of it. He has an interesting take on it worth hearing.
"I know you think you want to watch it, but don't. Just don't watch it." -In the 2020s, where movies are becoming more and more grotesque and vile, this quote is more relevant today.
I think there is somewhat of a point to the film, but it's fumbled pretty hard. It was basically a combination of two ideas the creator had: 1) A commentary on colonialism through the lens of p*rnography. 2) A commentary on politically correct/politically controlled media. Because in Serbia, the only way to get a movie made at the time was to get grant money from the EU, and in order for that the script needs to fulfill certain requirements, which the creators saw as manipulative and insulting to the intelligence of the viewers. A Serbian Film essentially parodies that idea: What if someone was using media to for a plan that is so nefarious that it boggles all sense of decency? Problem is that it doesn't commit to that idea, resulting in the bull viagra plot point.
Hello Brad. How come? There are so many enjoyable lost videos of yours that disappeared when blip.tv was shut down in 2015 that are being discovered and re-uploaded all over UA-cam. Or is it because you don't like this particular video being posted? Would it help if I changed the title to include "Brad Jones Review" or something like that? In a way of indicating that this is not my content, you know. I'd be more than happy to do that. By the way, if the reason of your concern is that it may be monetized, it's not, I promise. I made sure when I uploaded it. That would be a pretty despicable thing to do. One more thing, how did you discover this re-upload? I have a feeling it was that comment I posted yesterday. I'm flabbergasted you even saw it since it was reply to a comment on a video you posted a month ago. It's rather an honor to have one of my top favorite UA-camrs and cinephile idols reach out to me, although the reason is an inconvenient and unfortunate one. I look forward to your response and would appreciate it if you answered all my questions. Let it be clear that I'm not refusing your request. I just want to have a reasonable, fair-minded discussion about this before I do anything. Take care, Brad.

Thanks for uploading this, I remember this review!
If 2020 was a film...it would be A Serbian Film! That...or Salo or The Room.
I started off 2020 with Saló lol
It would definitely be a mix of Salo, A Serbian Film, and Cuties.

That's so accurate
Needs more autism.
4chan hasn't been this edgy since the late 2000s.

This movie made me lose hope in humanity……….. most fucked up movie I’ve ever seen.

I disagree with his comparison to Saló. I get that it is shocking and extreme but I don’t think it’s pointless like A Serbian Film

So A Serbian Film makes I Spit On Your Grave look like a Disney film lol
I watched it and it was extremely hard to watch it. I literally had to stop imagine the movie to be able to watch it
Please take this down.

Doesn't matter why, the man said he wants it down. He made the video, if you have any respect for him or his work you'll do the right thing.
Can the film itself be taken down instead?
well I'm keeping a copy just to be safe, I won't reupload

Hard disagree on Nekromantik 2 not being worse than A Serbian Film. Nekromantik 2 is the most fucked up commercial movie ever made.
