The decision to remove ANYONE who just assaulted a performer on live television should NEVER be up to the person who was just assaulted. The assault IS the self-made decision to be automatically removed, arrested, and booked.

EXACTLY! Now the the producers saying it is Chris's request not to remove / arrest Will Smith, when it was their own failure not to protect Chris and take the right action. If the decision really was up to Chris (which I start to doubt now) of course he must refuse to let Will get arrested, otherwise then people will double blame him for insulting his wife and arresting him.

The victim should never be put in the position (burdened) to be responsible to decide what happens next, in the immediate aftermath of an assault. The fact that the academy and executive producer, Will Packer are using Chris's statements (directly after the assault) as rationale for not ejecting is despicable. Chris was slapped once by Will and now he's being slapped again by the academy for them using Chris's statements as rationale for THEIR inaction. DISGUSTING! When someone is assaulted, it's time for the people around the victim to step up and take control of the situation. Way to go academy.

So the Producer Will Packer placed the fate of his Oscar's show onto Will Smith doing the right thing in his Oscar Speech. We all know how that turned out. It was Will Packer's responsibility to do the right thing! Not let a shocked assault victim take the responsibility or the perpetrator take the responsibility... HE had the responsibility of making things better. HE was supposed to be in charge. The problem was that there was no real leader or leadership there at the Awards show that night.
Will & Jada could have easily been removed from the audience to a back stage area during a commercial break (without there being an arrest or jail involved), someone else could've accepted Will Smith's award for him and then the matter would have been taken care of without any fuss. And the right thing done, too.

The onus to have Will Smith arrested should NOT have been placed on Chris Rock, who was clearly the victim of an assault. WE ALL SAW IT. Arrest the bully and be done with it. Of course Rock was saying 'no' in that moment; he was still reeling from what happened, b/c of his traumatic past of being bullied as a kid, he probably couldn't even think straight, AND he had to be seeing how much support Will was getting from the crowd, even feeling guilty for telling the joke. Hell! Why should Chris Rock have to be the one to stand up for what is right?! Why didn't the Academy and the producers and all those supposed A-Listers stand up for CHRIS?!!! Besides which, this is like the teenage girl who says she doesn't want to press charges against the high school quarterback who raped her b/c HE'S the popular guy, b/c everyone would attack HER instead of him. This is victim shaming and blaming and in that moment, I think Chris Rock was coerced into believing HE'D done something wrong by telling the joke (HE issued an immediate APOLOGY!!). Isn't it on the police to arrest the perp if it's clear the crime was committed? Have we learned nothing?! WHAT are kids who are being bullied and attacked in schools to think about this? That if the person bullying and punching you is powerful and popular enough, you shouldn't say anything?! GAH!

Sorry but the charges option was not all on Chris. It is The Academy’s OBLIGATION to keep everyone safe, especially those you have invited to present. It is not up to Chris Rock.
When you have your values intact there is no need for so much ‘discussion’.
As for the celebrity sheep automotons standing ovation for Will Smith after watching him aggressively assault and curse out their own Colleague, well, you make up your mind. I’m still in shock everyone believes that the meaning of the joke excuses the slap. It doesn’t.

Failed leadership. The producer put the responsibility of "making things better" on Rock and Smith. Smith was in no position to make anything better given his actions, therefore it was unethical to encourage him or rely on him to "make things better". Though I share the producer's sentiment about being extremely supportive of Rock, Rock had just been assaulted and of course being the honest, ethical, family man he is, wanted to keep things cool and movin'. Will Smith should have been removed. The leadership failed. A life's work and hope of generations, destroyed.

Will Packer, when Chris stated that he didn’t want Will arrested, You, Will Packer, should have turned to the LAPD and said, Will Smith can not stay here. Chris don’t want him arrested but please escort him out of the building and off the property. Of course Chris didn’t want him ARRESTED, fool. He knew intuitively that something was terribly wrong with Will Smith. You should have made the moral and right call to have Will Smith escorted out of the building and off the grounds, not arrested but OUT. Denzel could’ve accepted the award on his behalf. You are asking the victim, after his trauma to make decisions you should’ve made. The American people are not pleased.

  • @trishaw.237
    @trishaw.237 2 роки тому +5

Well that's two different things... from what I got here Chris was only telling the LAPD he didn't want "them" to remove, arrest Will, bc Chris didn't want the LAPD, not the Academy to make a bad situation worst, so Mr. Packer where in that conversation did Chris ever say, I don't want the Academy's security to throw Will, and Jada out. Did I miss Packer's question asking this... "Chris if you don't want to press charges, and have Will arrested by the LAPD, then I'am going to ask to have the Academy's security escort Will out for assaulting you bc we don't condone this behavior, nor violence of any kind."
Just sounds like protection of the Academy bs coming out of Packer's mouth also for Will, plus Chris, or maybe it was Tony R., said Chris only said that to the LAPD. Anyway, the Academy's protocol is if a guest gets assaulted, you throw the perpetrator even A-list star Will, and his Jada out the building without Chris' approval so therefore no blood on Chris' hands from Will's entire community.
Just sounds like all bs, Packer, and the Academy didn't care, and just wanted A-lister Will to stay for his award. Packer knew it was real once Will started with "F" bombs, therefore, at that moment Packer should have said to have Will's deplorable butt escorted out. SMH! If Packer's claims are true, then Packer ran up to the head people to save Will, over aiding traumatized Chris who had to remain facing his attacker, Will. Shameful!

This is a teachable moment about emotional intelligence.
It's a subject that can't be easily summarized in a short writing, but it is something that we should all care about, because we apply, or fail to apply emotional intelligence every day.
All of us have certain values, beliefs and a code that drives how we live, act, and think about what the world presents us. When presented with a situation, an important component, or attribute of emotional intelligence is to have an awareness of how that situation makes us feel.
Emotional intelligence involves having the ability to be authentic and true to oneself about how a situation makes us feel -- and to respond in a way that produces an outcome that is respectful to ourself, in keeping with our values, and that maximizes the quality of whatever social interaction is at hand.
It's a trait that determines life outcomes in equal, if not more agency than intellect.
This producer and the police made mistakes, and I'm not alone in that belief.
He failed to take action. He failed to take action because he had no "code," personal or professional, as to how to respond to violence. I can appreciate that he may not have, or to see need to have it in his personal life. But as a man responsible for an event with a crowd of celebrities in the age of mass shootings and prior cases of stage intrusions, he should have had some training or code as to how to respond.
If a person is assaulted, much less assaulted in such a high pressure situation, you don't let them do the thinking for you as to what to do.
They're traumatized. In shock. Confused. Probably in physical pain. As a man, perhaps Chris did not want to appear hurt or weak, which having Smith arrested might appear to some. There could have been prior personal dealings that would militate against asking for Smith to be arrested. He may have been so shaken that he felt responsible, or otherwise thought an escalation would bring him more embarrassment or scorn.
You're the producer. You're the person in charge. If a ceiling light fixture dropped and hit an award recipient in the head, you don't ask them what you should do.
"The police didn't arrest Chris because Chris asked them not to."
That's pathetic. It should not have been up to Chris. And this producer certainly should not have been running around like a gossiping interlocutor quoting Chris.
As for the LAPD, what can I say?
LAPD. I suppose that's all I need to say.
An arrest would have said the following: "Black Lives Matter."
What actually occurred says this: "They're Black. This is normal for them." The Hollywood version of a doctor prescribing Tylenol for a Black person with mortal pain.
And the standing ovation for a thug who spit on the dignity of Black man is revolting. Would the people who celebrated that violent display accept such behavior from their children? Forget that Chris was performing -- a paid professional required to make jokes: if their child is on the playground, hears a joke and throws a punch -- am I to believe that's a behavior they would stand up and praise?
Then, what were they doing clapping for Smith?
Emotional intelligence. Either they were not in touch with their true values, or maybe they were showing us who they really are: More than comfortable with the humiliation of a Black man. It's so natural to them, they neglected to act like civilized people.
Racists, wingnuts, and Fox News viewers take notice. Discard your mistaken belief that the Hollywood Left are against you. You are not alone. On certain issues, America is effectively monolithic. Race is one of them. There is no zip code where an assault on the dignity of a Black person is unwelcome.
Someone should do something with the video of those people clapping for a batterer. Call them out, every one of them.

Whether they did it because they wanted to give Smith the benefit of the doubt or because they just wanted it to look good for TV, who knows. Instead, the LAPD approach Chris Rock, who is in a hostile environment because it appeared everyone was more supportive of Will Smith, than the shocked, traumatized, and confused Chris Rock. The LAPD want Chris Rock to file Charges. Since when does the police need a victim statement to charge someone with disorderly conduct.

No one was quite sure that time what really happened so they had to make sure was it really an assault or was it a skit. That's how composed Chris was after the fact. So having gotten informed of the situation and followed by Chris's resistance to press charges, the cops can't just go in and arrest Will after Chris, even being the victim, told them not to

@@kenhew4641 Disorderly Conduct is a statutory crime. Will Smith was fighting and using offensive words in a public place. This is a violation of California Penal Code 647. No charges need to be filed by Chris Rock, this is a Police matter.

Will Smith needed to be removed for the safety of the people in attendance. He was obviously emotional and violent. They put everyone at risk.

That interviewer was great, i just wish he had pushed back on the question about whether he wishes will had left. He didnt make it clear whether he felt that the speech that will did give was something that he felt helped the situation. Id be curious to know

All this drama over a bitch slap. In the real world, this was just a disagreement between two grown men. Of which they settled that night. It's EVERYONE else that made this into a big issue.

Packer is ridiculous. Condoning a violent act, praising himself on Twitter and lying on GMA about Rock saying he didn't want Will to leave.
