What was a sticking point for me is that after Superman finally accepts what he is and finally gets the suit on, he's given no chance to do anything heronic. He doesn't stop any crime, doesn't save any people in his iconic image, no chance to show off the power he displays with care to protect people. Zod just shows up and tells people there's an alien among them and to hand him over. Superman only finally reveals himself in the suit as a stranger, the people have no clue for his motivations and frankly could only see him as the blame for some more aliens showing up to wreck shit up. Also, Superman emmediatly faces his match as the other kryptonians and zod, and gets his ass handed to him. There is no build up to the image he can genuily protect people or the planet
+DarkHypernova Speaking of Zod, he was the ONLY character I could bring myself to like. He had a character that felt unique with him still following orders for a better Krypton despite his race betraying him. He has a clear goal, motivation, and conveys emotion rather well, with his desperate pleas for Superman not to destroy Kyrpton's last chance of living, his utter devastation over the loss of his remaining people, and his subsequent anger for Superman. He was the only character I found good(though his acting was kind of 'eh' at some points) and all the others I could not give two shits about.
Superman has enough power to snap Zods neck. He then couldn't TILT Zods head, and tell the people to move and then keep going with the fight to have a non lethal ending? I don't mind Supes finally finding himself in a situation where the odds are against him and the people he tries to protect, but this was kinda shitty. I expected something much better in this fashion in Man of Steel 2 or 3, not the first one!
But it would make less sense in later films. In the first film he is inexperienced and scared in the moment. It’s also a catalyst for why he will never kill again. It would be stupid to let him kill when he’s developed as a character.
BATMAN: I brand criminals, which is essentially a death sentence for them in prison. SUPERMAN: Jesus! And you gave me shit in BVS? BATMAN: You caused a whack of collateral damage when you should have tried to lure Zod away from Metropolis. Not to mention, your first scene in BVS had you putting a human through a brick wall. SUPERMAN: I think we both have some issues we need to sort out.
That bit where Superman was a kid and getting bullied by those bigger kids. If he had gotten up and shoved (not even punched, just lightly shoved) one of the bullies, the bully could have gone flying back, bouncing across the earth and then hit into something that breaks his arm or his leg or something. Then it could be a really emotional moment as kid-Superman hears the guy scream in pain and everyone else runs away in terror and he'd just be consumed with remorse and horror at what just a moment of anger or lapse of self-control caused. THAT would have established that one of Superman's biggest fears is hurting people.
Even Smallville managed to turn the death of Jonathan Kent into a poignant moment, Man of Steel failed in that one, not the least because Clark could have easily saved him at super speed, but because it was a stupid trope of a set up.
Videogeek95 Season 5 episode 12, "Reckoning". The 100th episode for the series, and still one of the better ones. Though John Schnieder does make a few other appearances in later episodes (other dimensions, and a few episodes as Clark's conscience in season 10).
Another thing about the tornado scene is not only should they have seen it, they should have noticed the winds going up to 300 miles an hour nearby. Which. You know. MOST TORNADOES THAT SIZE HAVE.
Mokona7654 I'll go one step farther and point out how stupid martyrdom was. There are tons of miraculous, we survived a Tornado stories in existence. They live in Kansas where there are tornadoes all the time and as such they should know how there are tons of these stories. So Clark runs out, saves his father and then they give this bs story about slipping under a car, the storm turns, whatever and no one would bat an eye because weird stuff like that happens all the time in storm country.
I hope there is a scene where batman and superman talk about their past in batman vs superman and it's exactly like what Doug and Rob portrayed here. Hilarious stuff guys.
I always find it interesting when people who defend this film against credible criticism keep saying things like "Superman had no choice, Superman didn't have any options, he is inexperienced, they'll explain that in the sequel, etc, etc." The FACT remains, the only reason Superman did, said, reacted, or screwed up the way he did is because DAVID GOYER and ZACK SNYDER wanted it that way. Superman was only as capable or incapable as he was written to be. Personally, I have no problem with people who liked the movie, and no opinion I post is meant to say or imply people are wrong for enjoying the movie, nor am I trying to convince them to dislike it like I do. I just have a problem with Man of Steel fans who try to tell people they're wrong when they point out plot holes, logic flaws, and contrivances in the film. They make excuses, rely on theories (that aren't supported by the narrative) to explain plot holes, create straw men by attacking other films (The Avengers, Superman 1 & 2, or Marvel films in general are the favorites), reference comic book stories that are no longer in official DC canon, or accuse you of being blinded by nostalgia. Or here's a good one; we only found plot holes because we didn't understand the film or we weren't paying attention. Stop making excuses; you don't have to. The fact remains, Man of Steel fans are NOT wrong, stupid, or any other negative adjective for enjoying the movie, but they need to realize their enjoyment of the film is not threatened by our opinions, nor does their enjoyment require us to "rubber stamp" it by changing our opinion.
I didn't mind the neck breaking scene. In fact, after the trauma of the climax in Metropolis, I was hoping that Superman's character in BvS would be like "from now on, I'm submitting myself to the law. I'm too powerful to be above the law. If I ever go above the law, people are going to get hurt or worse--killed"--hence what would separate him from Batman. That's what I was hoping from that courtroom scene in BvS. Never happened... 😡
Batman(to Superman): So you snapped a guys neck to save a family and what was left of metropolis? While I left my former master to die in a derailing train; then ten years later redirected his avenging daughters vehicle off the road by shooting at her with 50 caliber rifles impacting in her death; and pushed some wacked out DA with half a face, off an unfinished building breaking his neck, all to save my friends child and the city of gotham..........yet I couldnt kill the clown that murdered my would-be girlfriend along with countless cops and innocent civilians?
I'm a DC fan (grew up with 92's Batman, Superman, Justice League, etc...), I actually like Superman as a character, I'm a Nolan-fan (and I loved The Dark Knight)... But, hell, how I HATE Man of Steel!! It's just a movie that is packed-load with missed opportunities, and I totally agree with you when you say that each time they HAVE the potential to develop their characters, BOOM!!! ACTION SCENE!!! I hated that!! To me, it was more of a roller-coaster desperately trying to be intellectual than a proper movie (I actually counted 11 scenes in the movie that are, IMO, completely pointless). Bad movie, bad writing (I can't say bad acting, because I don't think many of them were actually acting), even the score is far too loud (c'mon, Zimmer!! Show me the A-Stuff!!). I actually hope Dawn of Justice will be better for several reasons: 1) Goyer didn't write the script on that one. 2) The script was actually written by an oscar-winning screenwriter. 3) I DO believe in Ben Affleck. He's a smart guy, and he wouldn't have signed if he didn't know what he was doing. Other than that, Man of Steel is a great visual treat, but as a movie...lame.
Well now, Man of Steel is still (haha...) a weak movie in my opinion. It's just that now, with BvS, Snyder has completely trounced the character of Superman. He gets absolutely no development whatsoever in the course of the film, he's constantly outshined by Affleck's performance, he gets killed after only TWO FUCKING MOVIES, and he's always on the same, broody, boring expression and tone. Snyder has completely ruined the character in BvS.
Don't know if it was your review or elsewhere, but someone pointed out that Superman learned to fly at the age of 33. Know who else who flew to the heavens at age 33? JESUS!!!!
Cracking up at your recap of his dad's death scene. As someone with no background of the Superman franchise and who went into this cold, that was the scene that ruined this movie for me. It was so unbelievably stupid, I couldn't take anything seriously after it.
completely agree with the review, came out the film utterly disillusioned, was actually glad when he snapped the neck because it meant it was over. One thing, in tdkr, batman outright machine guns a guy in the face. In the last act, flying the batthing towards a truck, he stops it by basically shooting up the front. Now we're talking a precision piece of bat kit, we see targeting systems in every film with a flying vehicle, batthing would have one. Batman could have shot the tires. But no, he outright opens up the cannons on the drivers cabin.
It really is baffling how badly directed this movie is. No one has chemistry, not even Lois and Superman. Chris Hemsworth and Natalie Portman have more chemistry
+Samuli Hynninen Yeah but Chris Hemsworth is given reign to be charismatic and charming, while Henry Caville is just somehow not embarrassing himself despite I imagine the directing being like, "Frown! Frown harder!"
The idea of Superman is basically a god with mental barriers so heavy they make him human. Him freaking out as a kid, great concept. Although does make you question exactly when did his powers start to kick in, i mean in the 'original' he hit earth and had super strength, here he was in middle school and suddenly, powers! Him snapping Zods neck, if they followed up with it, then it would be great to had more mental barriers. Also i don't care if its a nitpick, that family was f*king stupid. Another thing is Zod and Superman killed all those people, if you say that after all the throwing around that *both* Zod and Superman did, didn't kill anyone in the "gritty realistic movie," then you and i have very big differences of "gritty realistic movies." Like brought up 'Why didn't he just kill Zod then?' "Because Zod would break free/ would overpower Superman." What made him *not* overpower Superman at the end!? Hes a general right? One of the elite? You're telling me he never learned a way to break out of that? Dude could break Supes kneecaps, punch him in the jaw, elbow, etc. So that still makes no goddamn sense! Its nitpicking, sure but shouldn't a climax of a movie make sense, have context, something, anything!? Jesus, F*ck, Sh*t! . . . . . best movie of the year 7/10 (3/10 maybe 4/10 no higher)
I can agree with most of the t things that you say but I cannot agree with your opinion about Zod death. When he died he achieve victory in this fight he force supermen to kill him. you need to remember that zod lost all thing's deer to his heart, his whole purpose of life. krypton is death his crew is death 1 ship on earth that can save krypton is destroyed so zod is death in his heart he is empty whole purpose of his life wos taken away from him he wont only 2 things make kal'el suffer and die achieving peace because everything that happened wos simply to much for zod to handle it and supermen is the only men that can kill him. so you see it is not that zod wos to weak or don't know how free him self he chose to die and make sups suffer because of that //one last thing english is not me 1 leng so sorry for me bad writing and i hope this will not affect your reply on me coment :D
TheMrDyziek I can understand that but the fact the next scene is just Supes saving/taking down a satellite and making jokes with Lois negates the suffering idea, or at least dampen. Also any hardcore Superman fans, isn't Zod depicted as a cold hard general? Someone that wouldn't rest till he killed his opponent? Idk, that ending just ehh............
***** i agree wit you on sup this should be addres more but we don't now how many time past from zod-killing-building-smashing-mes and i can give them that it wos cool scene that sups future is not that dark he can crack joke or 2 to zod part i cannot agree zod wos show as brutal killer and as the sevier of krypton in comics it depends on writer this wos show as a men who is going to do everything and more to save his species so his reaction wos justified
***** I agree. Superman has a problem with killing? When did he discover this about himself? Was it during the previous half hour, when he was punching General Zod through buildings and raining indiscriminate death and destruction down upon Metropolis? He's responsible for half of that. Here's a free screenwriting tip for Zack Snyder and company: When you have a character express great anguish over killing someone, you need to show that that character ever really had a problem with killing in the first place. You have to f*cking EARN that moment, not scream "NOOOOOOOO" in a stupid movie-writing cliche that was done to death in the 1980s. Also, Superman is not Space Jesus. Quit trying to crowbar that into the movie. His behavior is self-serving and amoral at best.
Catzilla The idea of Superman not wanting to kill would have worked, as you said, if they built up to it. Example, Have Superman be a pacifist, thus never really starting a fight, but thanks to his powers he can still end a fight if need be. He doesn't like a throwing a punch/hurting another being therefor he would hate the thought of killing. Paw's "Maybe" doesn't cut it Zack. Also him impaling the guys tuck doesn't help either. And yea hes not Space Jesus, like Rob said hes more like Moses; a kid from another time and place, raised right and decided to lead people.
The movie has a lot of interesting ideas that could have been real emotional and thought-provoking if treated well enough, but its thin writing and characterizations are what cripples it. It's so painfully obvious that David Goyer was completely uninspired when writing for these characters. I'm honestly glad that they replaced him with Chris Terrio for writing "Batman v Superman." But frankly, that's not really saying much. Unless Terrio shows off some extremely clever writing with BVS, we'll end up getting a completely disjointed mess in what seems like a desperate and obvious attempt at catching up with the MARVEL cinematic universe. I really wanna be hyped for this movie, but the fact that Warner Bros. wants to cram in so much into this one movie sucks a lot of the excitement out of it. I'm pretty much prepared to be disappointed at this point. If Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder can't save this movie, then all hope is lost for this franchise :(
Billy Barnett superman was sucking up solar radiation for 33 years, Zod only had a week. Superman will beat him, Faora fared much better against superman with about 12hours of Solar Radiation, only super speed and super strenght
Or a stroke or other natural causes that Superman wouldn’t be able to prevent with his powers. I think the heart attack is overused at this point, so better to give Jonathan Kent another natural cause that Superman would be powerless against.
To me, the biggest problem with Man of Steel is that it has two entirely different narratives that are fighting for screentime. The first narrative is the origin of Superman, the destruction of Krypton, how he grows up on Earth, the eventual death of Jonathan Kent, and Superman finding out about his origins. The second narrative is the invasion of Zod, Superman having to choose between Earth and Krypton, and the plan to terraform Earth into a new Krypton, wiping out everyone who lives on Earth. How much better wouldn't this movie have been if they had one movie to establish all the facts and backstory, and a second to resolve it? You could have a lot more time to establish Superman as someone who fears what people will think of him. You could introduce Zod in the opening of the first movie, and then end it with the scene where he broadcasts to Earth. Of course it doesn't solve all the problems of the movie. But like I said, the biggest problem to me was that it felt like the movie tried to tell two stories, and neither really meshes with the other.
you know, I do not remember a thing about Batman or Superman from either Justice League or Batman vs Superman....well....outside of the whole "MARTHA!" thing
Superman: We're the same. Troubled childhood... Batman: me too Superman: Brooding all the time... Batman: Right here Superman: I killed a guy... Batman: you are fucked up, I thought I had issues dressing up as a bat, but you snapped a guy's neck?
I kind of want a Superman movie with no backstory. It's told from the point of view of Lois and co., and he just appears one day. And he's very kind and friendly and idealistic (but not naively so), but they are understandably concerned of what could happen if he were to go off the rails.
My problem was that Superman expressed pain about the choice afterwards with how he was raised. Pa Kent raised him in a way that would have turned him into a guy that put himself above everyone else. You got all these powers, you shouldn't save people! That was such a bullshit move.
Why wouldn’t his father want him to think and care about himself rather than just letting him be used for society and ultimately blamed for his inability to save everyone
I think Pa's death scene would have been so much better if he told his son to get his mom to safety. And have Clark ignore him and try to save him but in the storm his dad has a heart attack. That way Clark will have a more legitimate fear of revealing himself to the world and more of a dilemma to reveal himself.
The reason people HATED on this movie is it was not logical in presentation of critical facts and emotional truths. Example 1- if you are going to say that your hero is like Jesus then have him be violent....don't have him kill some one with his bare hands! Example 2- If you want it to be gritty and real then the actors can't take the certain prospect of death like a time out ! Example 3- if you want us to like this Superman then make him...likable and kind hearted. Example 4- If can't be bothered to wear a mask then he can't care about people tracking him in the age of camera phones There are more ...many more but I think you can add these to your rant!
I like this movie a lot and here is why. The good things are that they show Superman's development through life, showing him evolving, and its great that it is shown in flashbacks too. Krypton looks amazing to me, everything about it draws me to it, the environment, the creatures and the overall atmosphere feels like an alien planet. Zod is also portrayed as sort of like an egotist to me, wanting to do everything his way without any interference. Zod shows that he cares about Krypton and his people, he would even destroy a planet to get it back. And also showing him adapt to Earth's atmosphere was also a nice little tid bit.Superman is awesome, people say he is too dark and brooding, and I agree with some of it mostly because they sucked most of the colour out of his costume. But his development is nice to watch, like when he saved the kids from the bus. And also the scene where he surrenders is great because it shows that he is not some brute who thinks he can handle everything by himself. It shows that even Superman needs help every now and then. People hate that Jonathan Kent said let them die, but he said maybe, which means he's not sure, he's confused about what to do. And some people hate when Superman fights Zod in the city and kills him. Superman was just starting out, so naturally he won't be perfect on the first day on the job. People say that he should have flown out of the city to fight Zod, but to me, it looks like Zod is trying not to go out the city, so he can show Superman what it feels like to lose his people. And Superman Zod's neck, I think he was confused. And still on his first day, was lost and had no other choice. Then this will show Superman to never take another life again. People said that Pa Kent should have had a heart attack to show that are some things that Clark can't stop. I agree, but in this he shows Clark what it means to sacrifice himself for the right cause. Which is also nice. The action is also great but sometimes interrupts the story. Lois and Clark's chemistry is OK I guess. I like Jor-El a lot because of his likable personality and that hologram thing was nice. Martha Kent was also good, she showed us her emotions about caring for Clark. If Zack Snyder can balance the action and the story. Then the future of the DCCU will be bright.
The bad things are that the action just pushes the story aside sometimes. It is just annoying, I agree with Rob that it takes no risks and he has no consequences for his actions. After he killed Zod we never see him feel guilty. They just end the movie, the chemistry between Lois and Clark was a bit too rushed in my opinion. And I don't like Zod's screaming scenes too. And too many product placements too. They should really show how this experience affects Superman in Batman V Superman.
Bryan Leong The problem was that none of the characters feel real or have any substance. Superman is pretty much just a piece of wood with super powers. They lost the personality that Superman has almost always had just to make way for a poor man's Bruce Wayne.
Man of Steel is a horrible film because it focuses on elements that are either way too obvious and not needed in the film and also fails as a movie like many critics said: millions of subplots, under developed characters (especially the main chracter), way too many themes introduced (as well as intorducing themes that doesnt fit the character) and later ignored, horrible propaganda, unfocused storyline, horrible cinematography and visuals
***** the editing on the fight scenes are horrible done and pase too much movement within the camera as well as obvious cgi as well zoom ins and zoom outs Propaganda would be sears, ihop, uhual, 7eleven, and lots more
I'm so glad I'm not the only person in the world who thinks the whole "Superman is Jesus" thing is bullshit. Also, I've yet to see a live-action Superman movie that didn't have at least something blatantly stupid about it. Thankfully, the animated films are often very good, but as for live-action... Superman: That stupid time-travel ending, and Lex Luthor being too goofy and non-threatening. Superman II: Superman pulling new powers out of his butt (including creepy amnesia kiss), same goofy Luthor, that whole "becoming human for Lois" plot thread. Superman III: Everything Superman IV: Everything! Superman Returns: Making Superman a dead-beat Dad, and making the ending of Superman II even creepier. Man of Steel: Pa Kent's pointless sacrifice, trying to make it like Batman, and pretty much everything else the Walkers said. They nailed it. At least the animated movies usually get it right. And, there's been two good live-action TV shows, 50s Superman, and Lois and Clark (although, Smallville sucked). But, I'd like to see a decent live-action Superman film one of these days.
Tetsu Deinonychus you can mess with time travel when you go multiple times faster than light, dont see how it's a problem. How can he be a dead-beat dad if he didn't even know that the kid is his son
What if they changed the Supes canon and had Jonathan Kent survive ONLY because Supes had to kill someone with his power to save his father? Then that would really effect him and make him shun killing and learn self-control but still use his find away to use his powers for good.
To be fair there was one relatable, well acted character in the movie. The problem is that character was General Zod. Man of Steel is hands down a great General Zod movie. But it's shit as far as Superman movies go. It's been said by several people who work for DC and the tv arm of WB that the movie studio side of the company has its head up its ass. Movie execs at WB won't even let Comic book or TV people who have spent years working with these characters sit in on the meetings. They just let David Goyer have free reign to turn Superman into a lackluster imitation of Batman. The best evidence that Goyer has no clue what he's doing is the death of Johnathan Kent. Batman is a character defined by the death of his parents. Superman is not defined by the death of Johnathan Kent. You can't cut and paste character motivations for these iconic characters and expect it to work. As for Marvel, even the worst Marvel Studios movie is still a good movie. None of them have been outright travesties. And that fact is partly due to the movie studio having large numbers of comic book writers and artists present at the meetings where they decide what is going to go into each "phase".
Alright they pretty much covered what I disliked about Superman killing Zod. The idea itself I have no beef with it was just the way they set it up and did nothing to follow it up afterward that bothered me.
It's funny because so far from what we have seen have seen so far in the Batman v Superman trailers a lot of the things they are complaining about are looking to be part of the main plot. The city being destroyed and Superman dealing with with the guilt of killing Zod are apparently going to be some of the main things that Superman is going to be dealing with and part of the reason why Batman is picking a fight with Superman.
Videogeek95 I am just praying that the people making the Wonder Woman movie realize that nothing they ever do could ever please feminists and that they should not even bother trying.
15:34 Superman is Batman! Batman is Superman! Human sacrifice! Dogs and cats living together! Mass hysteria! Well, can't wait for Hollywood to fuck up the 2017 Wonderwoman movie. Green Lantern, now Superman; in this decade, can we make a triple threat of poor attempts at DC Comics movies, where they have no excuse to since they've been able to at least stumble their way into an acceptable series of Batman adaptations?
Zev the Reveler News from 2017. The Wonder Woman movie is actually pretty good. They nailed the character and renewed people's faith in the DC movies. 😄
And how did that banter between Batman and Superman actually go? Superman: My mother's name is Martha. Batman: Amazing! Mine too! I totally forget all the reasons i wanted to kill you! Superman: Just because of my mothers first name? You are very inconsistent!
This discussion about how you distinguish Batman and Superman from each other that you guys are having is ironic because you point out the irony of that Batman doesn't kill and Superman doesn't...but boy all the that is null and void when Batman is a cold blooded killer(even more so) than Supes in this universe's Rendition of the DC universe.
Anyone else find it odd that, b4 Clark "became" Superman, is that he is still saving ppl with no disguise: men on the oil rig and Lois Lane. But for some reason, Clark hides himself when he "crucifies" that one guy's truck and when he's stealing clothes. He says after Jonathan's death he learned that ppl weren't ready for him but he's not incognito when he's rescuing ppl. So, to me, Kent's death was pointless.
because in the next scene he forget about it. even at the begging of bvs he kill a terrorist who was menacing lois with a gun, even thought he can easily melt that gun with the hot-vision. making zod's kill entirely pointless, because he didn't learn anything
I really understand Robs frustration with the die-hard defenders of this film. I've had physical conversations with these people and it's really infuriating.
Jack Franco No, it's frustrating with haters like you. I admit this movie has flaws, but it's a great movie. You people always hate on the movie for the most absurd reasons. It's frustrating to debate with haters like you since you people always think this movie is shit and has nothing redeemable in it.
Super man didn't kill Zodd to save the family of 4, he killed him to save all the others he would have killed after if he let him survived and the fight drag on.
***** In the current premise of the movie possibly but it's not like he wouldn't be able to find a way. Even then the Superman we know doesn't kill and the consequences it brings is so massive.
Your comment about who in the movie you will defend. I think the person who could be defended as bad ass is Michel Shannon’s Zod His performance was a 9.8/10
Rob Campion I think you're correct. It'd take the most altruistic person with balls of steel to help the world for nothing in return, especially more so being an alien. Being Superman can drive anyone crazy.
well how where they gonna do with zod there was no containment cell for him the government has never dealt with kryptonians before and zod did say he is basically never going to stop killing humans because of superman denying him to recreate krypton
Remember the world engine part of man of steel. Why didn't super use his heat vision to destroy them. Didn't have to go so close to destroy them. Just shoot em up with your lasers.
I really don’t like man of steel. It feels so forced. Superman’s dad really didn’t have to die he just died for the sake of it. And for a person who cares about life he destroys nearly all of metropolis killing hundreds. I liked how Superman killed Zod. What I got out of it is that he’s distraught after killing the only other survivor of krypton. However no one cares in the movie. Nothing feels like it has consequence or anything
Well Clark Kent was a geek, a loser, an outcast! Never had a girl friend till he was older, he still bleeds, he still gets angry, he (like almost all teenagers) doesn't know who he is yet, Smallville hello!
You guys do know Superman killed Zod in Superman 2 right? Matter of fact he killed Zod after he took his powers away hmmm!!! Superman is a DC character not Marvel!!!
Action Figure World I think the point is that they made it seem like a big deal in this movie, and then it didn't come to anything. The fact that he killed him isn't the problem.
its a bad movie on so many levels that every turn is an eye rolling moment that could of been easily avoided had the writer just thought things through properly
Did anyone even consider that maybe Superman was in denial after he had to kill Zod? Or that that family of four was representing all those people Zod told he was going to take away from Superman one by one? Or that Jonathan Kent's death was made to be so that the viewers would that even people without powers can save people(like Army did helping Superman) and he was a father who loved his son so much he would rather die than let himself be saved by Clark so that would then be taken away because he was an alien? And this was the first movie, of cource some things about Superman's origins were forcrd to be there, but at least they were expanded and put there in that place where we know they should be, like Clark Kent starting to work for the Daily Planet as a reporter wearing classes. I'm not going to start defending everything about Man of Steel, but if it was possible for everyone not to just whine and complain just because some masses say it was horrible, they could use their own brains and think more about everything that happened in it. Maybe then those people could see all the good that was in Man of Steel that so many are still ignoring.
Doesn't Superman's existence in the DC Universe invalidate the Christian faith? His Bible belt farmer parents never thought there was anything contradictory between their faith that never mentions aliens and the arrival of a baby in a freaking spaceship?
grown men dressed like bats are clearly fucked up. I'll never understand why batman doesn't murder villains reflexively. & superman doesn't fuck around now. he'll break your neck 'cuz he's bored. sense is AWOL
slagar the cruel 85 Nope. He says to Ra's "I'm not going to kill you. But I don't have to save you." And he leaves. So while you could maybe count it, he just tells him to fuck off.
Christ is God. He said that He didn't come to abolish the laws of the Old Testament but to fulfill them. People try to make a dichotomy between mean, old God and new, hippie God and this is a short sighted and emotional perspective.
I think the best word for Superman is vanilla. Me, being a vanilla guy, can relate to him. And honestly, so many people are vanilla that it makes him an appealing and relateable superhero.
There's a difference between murdering someone and stopping someone. Batman wasn't trying to kill Dent. He was trying to stop him from murdering Gordon's son.
I'd like to see an Else-worlds comic where "Clark Kent is Batman, Bruce Wayne is Superman". A Kryptonian Batman and a non-powered Superman, think about it.
I would put forth, that the consequences of Superman's actions just haven't occurred yet. From the trailer for B-vs-S it looks like that entire movie is the consequences of Superman's Actions.
I liked this movie better than Superman Returns just because Supes DID STUFF and actually fought bad guys, instead of just saving a few people and looking heroic... But with that said they still went overboard with fighting and turned it into DBZ which would be cool if innocent didn't get hurt and Superman actually cared about those people I know it's just setting up the reason for Batman to take down Superman in Dawn of Justice but it could be handled way better. If this was the Iron Man movie of DC meant to start a universe it was a very shaky start...
First complains that there are no consequences of death. Than complains that the death of Pa Kent doesn't mean anything... I'm with Angry Jo, Man of Steel was great.
+Bitten Survivor Superman's powers are extreme. I don't believe he was a monster in MOS. He sacrificed himself to save humanity. If he hadn't stopped the world engine in the Indian Ocean, humans would be dead. If hadn't stopped Zod in Metropolis, humans would be dead. Superman is the hero of MOS. Sure buildings were destroyed and people were killed, but he saved more life than "accidently" destroying it. Tony Stark created Ultron that was going to destroy the world. Why is no one giving Iron Man this much shit?
John Palacios Yeah I was exaggerating on the whole monstrous nightmare thing But Superman didn't sacrifice himself at all He just made things worse by activating the beacon which led Zod and his people over to earth Even after the world engine was destroyed people were killed in the process You can't convince anyone that the fighting caused thousands and thousands of deaths Sure he saved the world and stuff But he was a complete idiot to let people die in the process in fighting Zod Seriously he couldn't take the fight anywhere else Also Iron Man is getting shit for making Ultron These guys addressed that and critics addressed that
+Bitten Survivor Superman did sacrifice himself by handing himself over to Zod. When Superman destroyed the world engine, he saved 7 billion people. I can't convince anyone that fighting caused thousands of deaths... uhmmm... sure it did. But if he hadn't of fought Billions of humans would have perished. When Superman fought Faora and that really tall Kryptonian, he tried to save as many people as he could. Humans usually die when God's fight. Zod told him, that since Kal destroyed everything that was dear to him, Zod was going to destroy everything dear to Kal. aka the human population. If Kal flew away, Zod would just start destroying humanity with reckless abandon. Zod was not in a mood to negotiate where to fight, and Superman did not have the expertise in combat or tactics to do anything more than what he did in the movie. As Zod so eloquently put it General Zod: I was bred to be a warrior Kal. Trained my entire life to master my senses. Where did you train? ON A FARM!!! I didn't bother to see any reviews on Avengers 2. I saw it once, and that was enough, I guess I'll see it again on Netflix one day. I just bought Man of Steel 3 weeks ago, and I have been diving into MOS behind the scenes stuff. Making of, youtube video reviews. The more I see MOS, the more I like it.
John Palacios Handing him over to Zod wasn't technically a sacrifice Because that didn't work Sure he saved 7 billion people and stuff But in the process he let millions of people on danger But Superman is that much of a complete idiot for let this many people die Also when Superman fought the two kryptonians he only saved 3 random soldiers He knows that they are after him not the people He could've easily gotten them out of the way of populated areas Also if Kal flew away from the final battle Zod would've followed him Because he's letting his anger on Kal first than the humans Zod was angry At least I think he was because I couldn't believe such a good actor would give a bland performance And Superman and Zod having any combat experience doesn't involve with we are saying
+DarkHypernova Agreed.
+DarkHypernova That is PRECISELY my beef with this movie.
That Batman/Superman banter though!!!
+freddieawsome1 Now, that it's Batfleck. XD
SUPERMAN: And I snapped someone's neck.
BATMAN: You're adorable.
Jarek Gunther HA!!!! So true!
To me, Superman fights for good while Batman fights against evil.
Also Clark desires a social life, Bruce desires a family.
What?
That bit where Superman was a kid and getting bullied by those bigger kids. If he had gotten up and shoved (not even punched, just lightly shoved) one of the bullies, the bully could have gone flying back, bouncing across the earth and then hit into something that breaks his arm or his leg or something. Then it could be a really emotional moment as kid-Superman hears the guy scream in pain and everyone else runs away in terror and he'd just be consumed with remorse and horror at what just a moment of anger or lapse of self-control caused.
THAT would have established that one of Superman's biggest fears is hurting people.
I didn’t have to hurt someone to not want to hurt people
Even Smallville managed to turn the death of Jonathan Kent into a poignant moment, Man of Steel failed in that one, not the least because Clark could have easily saved him at super speed, but because it was a stupid trope of a set up.
+Allan Mason JOHN SCHNIEDER DIES IN SMALLVILE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Videogeek95
Season 5 episode 12, "Reckoning". The 100th episode for the series, and still one of the better ones. Though John Schnieder does make a few other appearances in later episodes (other dimensions, and a few episodes as Clark's conscience in season 10).
It’s symbolic of his sacrifice. Also you would enjoy movies you like less if you nitpicked, claiming good scenes are ‘tropes’.
I always find it interesting when people who defend this film against credible criticism keep saying things like "Superman had no choice, Superman didn't have any options, he is inexperienced, they'll explain that in the sequel, etc, etc."
The FACT remains, the only reason Superman did, said, reacted, or screwed up the way he did is because DAVID GOYER and ZACK SNYDER wanted it that way.
The fact remains, Man of Steel fans are NOT wrong, stupid, or any other negative adjective for enjoying the movie, but they need to realize their enjoyment of the film is not threatened by our opinions, nor does their enjoyment require us to "rubber stamp" it by changing our opinion.
the same can be said to the star wars prequels fans
I actually hope Dawn of Justice will be better for several reasons:
1) Goyer didn't write the script on that one.
2) The script was actually written by an oscar-winning screenwriter.
3) I DO believe in Ben Affleck. He's a smart guy, and he wouldn't have signed if he didn't know what he was doing.
Other than that, Man of Steel is a great visual treat, but as a movie...lame.
+FandeJay
Same here, except I enjoyed Man of Steel better than any previous Superman movie.
+FandeJay
Nolan did not make this. I feel like they mostly put his name on this to sell it, not because he had a lot to do with it.
Couldn't have said that better.
And now...?
Well now, Man of Steel is still (haha...) a weak movie in my opinion. It's just that now, with BvS, Snyder has completely trounced the character of Superman. He gets absolutely no development whatsoever in the course of the film, he's constantly outshined by Affleck's performance, he gets killed after only TWO FUCKING MOVIES, and he's always on the same, broody, boring expression and tone. Snyder has completely ruined the character in BvS.
This is by far the most entertaining Spoiler Corner I've ever seen.
Agreed
Don't know if it was your review or elsewhere, but someone pointed out that Superman learned to fly at the age of 33. Know who else who flew to the heavens at age 33? JESUS!!!!
Cracking up at your recap of his dad's death scene. As someone with no background of the Superman franchise and who went into this cold, that was the scene that ruined this movie for me. It was so unbelievably stupid, I couldn't take anything seriously after it.
I’m amazed
I love this review and they made some valid points
completely agree with the review, came out the film utterly disillusioned, was actually glad when he snapped the neck because it meant it was over.
I didn't hate this movie, but it was disappointing.
Dean Cain and Terry Hatcher had gret chemistry in the TV series
Couldnt superman have just covered zods eyes? He clearly can! Hes invunerable!
Another thing is Zod and Superman killed all those people, if you say that after all the throwing around that *both* Zod and Superman did, didn't kill anyone in the "gritty realistic movie," then you and i have very big differences of "gritty realistic movies." Like brought up 'Why didn't he just kill Zod then?'
"Because Zod would break free/ would overpower Superman."
What made him *not* overpower Superman at the end!? Hes a general right? One of the elite? You're telling me he never learned a way to break out of that? Dude could break Supes kneecaps, punch him in the jaw, elbow, etc. So that still makes no goddamn sense!
Its nitpicking, sure but shouldn't a climax of a movie make sense, have context, something, anything!? Jesus, F*ck, Sh*t!
. . . . . best movie of the year 7/10 (3/10 maybe 4/10 no higher)
I can agree with most of the t things that you say but I cannot agree with your opinion about Zod death. When he died he achieve victory in this fight he force supermen to kill him. you need to remember that zod lost all thing's deer to his heart, his whole purpose of life. krypton is death his crew is death 1 ship on earth that can save krypton is destroyed so zod is death in his heart he is empty whole purpose of his life wos taken away from him he wont only 2 things make kal'el suffer and die achieving peace because everything that happened wos simply to much for zod to handle it and supermen is the only men that can kill him. so you see it is not that zod wos to weak or don't know how free him self he chose to die and make sups suffer because of that
//one last thing english is not me 1 leng so sorry for me bad writing and i hope this will not affect your reply on me coment :D
***** i agree wit you on sup this should be addres more but we don't now how many time past from zod-killing-building-smashing-mes and i can give them that it wos cool scene that sups future is not that dark he can crack joke or 2
to zod part i cannot agree zod wos show as brutal killer and as the sevier of krypton in comics it depends on writer this wos show as a men who is going to do everything and more to save his species so his reaction wos justified
If Chris Terrio and Zack Snyder can't save this movie, then all hope is lost for this franchise :(
I'm on Joe's side, this was one of superman's greatest challenges, Zod really beat Superman with experience. He will learn from his mistakes.
Billy Barnett superman was sucking up solar radiation for 33 years, Zod only had a week. Superman will beat him, Faora fared much better against superman with about 12hours of Solar Radiation, only super speed and super strenght
@@yisin3323 their strength comes from weaker gravity and the sun
@@billybarnett9518 you’re the best
I think the dad should have had a heart attack. It would've been something he couldn't stop himself.
Or a stroke or other natural causes that Superman wouldn’t be able to prevent with his powers. I think the heart attack is overused at this point, so better to give Jonathan Kent another natural cause that Superman would be powerless against.
I hate Man of Steel, hate it with a passion. The most uninspiring, depressing, horribly written, disappointing POS movie.
I felt that way too
I also felt the coke cut out the 20 minutes of quotes on blowing up a condensed it or got rid of it completely
Jesus pummeled those demons, though, Rob. He isn't just a nice hippie guy.
Ha ha
you know, I do not remember a thing about Batman or Superman from either Justice League or Batman vs Superman....well....outside of the whole "MARTHA!" thing
Superman: We're the same. Troubled childhood...
Batman: me too
Superman: Brooding all the time...
Batman: Right here
Superman: I killed a guy...
Batman: you are fucked up, I thought I had issues dressing up as a bat, but you snapped a guy's neck?
14:00 you know the HISHE thing with Batman and Superman when they talking at the diner. Tell me its good scenario for it.
"You get your super ass over here" xD
if only superman broke Zods neck and then flew around the earth to go back in time
I kind of want a Superman movie with no backstory.
Or better yet, have him die of a heart attack like he did in the Richard Donner film. Which, In my opinion is much more relatable.
justin riley but that's already been done before, if they wanted to do something different then make it good.
John Goodrich That's how it was in the comics and in Smallville. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Example 4- If can't be bothered to wear a mask then he can't care about people tracking him in the age of camera phones
There are more ...many more but I think you can add these to your rant!
***** the editing on the fight scenes are horrible done and pase too much movement within the camera as well as obvious cgi as well zoom ins and zoom outs
Propaganda would be sears, ihop, uhual, 7eleven, and lots more
Samir Nasrullah am not writing a magnum opus on youtube about the film
JRUG I didn't mind the product placement, although I do like Mac and Me so take that however you want.
Billy Barnett ive heard the argument that it actually brings realism to a movie but u gotta admit that Sears one was pretty bad
JRUG A lot of movies do it though, Iron Man had a lot of product placement and promotion as well.
BOOMER WILL LIVE!
+Ben Houston But Costner wont... yaaay!
Superman III: Everything
Superman IV: Everything!
Tetsu Deinonychus The first two were great movies.
Tetsu Deinonychus you can mess with time travel when you go multiple times faster than light, dont see how it's a problem. How can he be a dead-beat dad if he didn't even know that the kid is his son
Oh Wayne Enterprises was on the satellite Superman and Zod hit and Lex Corp was on the tanker truck during the fight in Metropolis.
And that fact is partly due to the movie studio having large numbers of comic book writers and artists present at the meetings where they decide what is going to go into each "phase".
that Johnathon death scene was laughable
Yeah
No
you know what, the friggin tv series Smallville was way better than this movie. this movie is like seeing bizarro angsty superman.
Dat Tornado scene! DX
Alright they pretty much covered what I disliked about Superman killing Zod. The idea itself I have no beef with it was just the way they set it up and did nothing to follow it up afterward that bothered me.
So batman and superman switched backgrounds?
It's funny because so far from what we have seen have seen so far in the Batman v Superman trailers a lot of the things they are complaining about are looking to be part of the main plot. The city being destroyed and Superman dealing with with the guilt of killing Zod are apparently going to be some of the main things that Superman is going to be dealing with and part of the reason why Batman is picking a fight with Superman.
Videogeek95 I am just praying that the people making the Wonder Woman movie realize that nothing they ever do could ever please feminists and that they should not even bother trying.
mattbenz99 You realize you might as well be praying for a tree that grows money...?

Superman is Batman!
It seems I'm the only one in the Multiverse that just thinks Man of Steel is an ok movie.
+Nicodemus Edwards No you aren't. In my opinion, it's the most okay movie I've ever seen. It's completely in the middle for me.
FOR THE LAST TIME! BATMAN DOES'NT KILLED PEOPLE BATMAN
I'm a little surprised you guys didn't mention the nanobot tentacles at the climax.
You nailed it.
off topic. Will there be a behind the scenes video for the 2 top 10 avatar episodes?
I love the new magnificent seven, I enjoy that film to no end. if someone critized it, I won't deans it as great cinnema
Wow. This movie really disappointed me and you guys articulated many of the problems I had with the movie very well. Thanks :)
>Superman has never been Jesus, I don't get where this comes from. He is a Greek god with a Moses back story.
I've got some bad news for you Rob....
Is that, like, a shot at religion or something?
After watching Transformers age of extinction, I am immune to any product placement in films
9:58 - The Kevin Costner Hand
Anyone else find it odd that, b4 Clark "became" Superman, is that he is still saving ppl with no disguise: men on the oil rig and Lois Lane. But for some reason, Clark hides himself when he "crucifies" that one guy's truck and when he's stealing clothes. He says after Jonathan's death he learned that ppl weren't ready for him but he's not incognito when he's rescuing ppl. So, to me, Kent's death was pointless.
One thing about Zod’s death, Superman screams & humans are right there in the building, so how is it that they're not deaf ???
because in the next scene he forget about it. even at the begging of bvs he kill a terrorist who was menacing lois with a gun, even thought he can easily melt that gun with the hot-vision. making zod's kill entirely pointless, because he didn't learn anything
Uhh.......didn't Batman kill Dent at the end of Dark Knight.
no....He try to out talk him
by trying to save Gordon's son...
someone he knew...
and not surrounded and directed horribly...
Javier Perez no he simply spear him off the bridge
I really understand Robs frustration with the die-hard defenders of this film. I've had physical conversations with these people and it's really infuriating.
I know right! No matter what the film is great, they will never admit flaws
Jack Franco No, it's frustrating with haters like you. I admit this movie has flaws, but it's a great movie. You people always hate on the movie for the most absurd reasons. It's frustrating to debate with haters like you since you people always think this movie is shit and has nothing redeemable in it.
superherofan24 why are you blaming the audience for a mediocre film
Super man didn't kill Zodd to save the family of 4, he killed him to save all the others he would have killed after if he let him survived and the fight drag on.
first sensible comment I've seen
***** In the current premise of the movie possibly but it's not like he wouldn't be able to find a way. Even then the Superman we know doesn't kill and the consequences it brings is so massive.
***** Could've taken the fight out of the city, but no!
I'm not a superman fan,but i went into this hoping to be converted...NOPE!
Susan Whitehall Try the Donner version. Its true to the character of Superman
Your comment about who in the movie you will defend. I think the person who could be defended as bad ass is Michel Shannon’s Zod
His performance was a 9.8/10
I always think if Superman grew up in a normal family he'd be a sportsman earning a ton of money with his family living in luxury
Rob Campion Nah, he'd be nabbed by the government after exposing himself via drug tests.
True but either way he wouldn't be a hero
Rob Campion I think you're correct. It'd take the most altruistic person with balls of steel to help the world for nothing in return, especially more so being an alien. Being Superman can drive anyone crazy.
so his balls are the reason why he is the man of steel
well how where they gonna do with zod there was no containment cell for him the government has never dealt with kryptonians before and zod did say he is basically never going to stop killing humans because of superman denying him to recreate krypton
You guys stole the scene from how it should have ended's SuperCafe.
3:29 oh he will ;)
You guys do know Superman killed Zod in Superman 2 right? Matter of fact he killed Zod after he took his powers away hmmm!!!
Superman is a DC character not Marvel!!!
Action Figure World I think the point is that they made it seem like a big deal in this movie, and then it didn't come to anything. The fact that he killed him isn't the problem.
its a bad movie on so many levels that every turn is an eye rolling moment that could of been easily avoided had the writer just thought things through properly
Another way to look at the tornado scene is that Clark can silently crucify a truck but not secretly save a dog lol
hmm never notice that
Did anyone even consider that maybe Superman was in denial after he had to kill Zod?
I totally agree. It's fine if it wasn't good to other people but critics were way too harsh on this film.
Ha ha "super ass"
Batman does not kill. I thought he kill razol ghoul at the end I of begins. Heck he flat out killed superman a couple of times he took things to far.
slagar the cruel 85 Nope. He says to Ra's "I'm not going to kill you. But I don't have to save you." And he leaves. So while you could maybe count it, he just tells him to fuck off.
in 1989 batman he killed a guard at the bell tower
Anthony Barratt That Batman isn't comics Batman though. He's Tim Burton's interpretation of Batman. And he kills lots of people.
Uhm... I love you guys, but Batman flat out kills Harvey Dent in The Dark Knight.
Henrik Larsen he was tring to save both Gordon's kid and Harvey but wasn't able to grab onto Harvey
yisin3323
Huh. Guess I have an excuse to watch the movie again then :)
There's a difference between murdering someone and stopping someone. Batman wasn't trying to kill Dent. He was trying to stop him from murdering Gordon's son.
James Rafferty
True, I didn't mean "murder", just "kill". It's more about the idea of a bloodless Batman than his intentions.
I'd like to see an Else-worlds comic where "Clark Kent is Batman, Bruce Wayne is Superman". A Kryptonian Batman and a non-powered Superman, think about it.
I'll save you the time. They are a couple hipster whiners with ridiculous hats who bash the film for no real reason.
Wow...it's like...Man of Steel wasn't a good movie or something.
How cute.
+Turd Furgeson. lol that was lame
Holla
Man I'm so glad everyone is a fan of me.
I hope they make Aquaman brooding too.
No we need a batman the brave and the bold aquaman
OUTRAGEOUS!!!
First complains that there are no consequences of death.
Than complains that the death of Pa Kent doesn't mean anything...
I'm with Angry Jo, Man of Steel was great.
+John Palacios I guess enjoy Superman being a monstrous nightmare who would potentially accidently destroy everything and anything
+Bitten Survivor
Superman's powers are extreme.
John Palacios Yeah I was exaggerating on the whole monstrous nightmare thing
But
Superman didn't sacrifice himself at all
He just made things worse by activating the beacon which led Zod and his people over to earth
Even after the world engine was destroyed people were killed in the process
You can't convince anyone that the fighting caused thousands and thousands of deaths
Sure he saved the world and stuff
But he was a complete idiot to let people die in the process in fighting Zod
Seriously he couldn't take the fight anywhere else
Also Iron Man is getting shit for making Ultron These guys addressed that and critics addressed that
+Bitten Survivor
Superman did sacrifice himself by handing himself over to Zod.
As Zod so eloquently put it
General Zod: I was bred to be a warrior Kal.
John Palacios
Handing him over to Zod wasn't technically a sacrifice
Because that didn't work
Sure he saved 7 billion people and stuff
But in the process he let millions of people on danger
But Superman is that much of a complete idiot for let this many people die
Also when Superman fought the two kryptonians he only saved 3 random soldiers
He knows that they are after him not the people
He could've easily gotten them out of the way of populated areas
Also if Kal flew away from the final battle Zod would've followed him
Because he's letting his anger on Kal first than the humans
Zod was angry
At least I think he was because I couldn't believe such a good actor would give a bland performance
And Superman and Zod having any combat experience doesn't involve with we are saying
