    So happy this EV is working out so well for you Kenneth. I love the fact that the movement is growing and that the truth is getting out to people that driving an EV is a very positive and fun experience. Happy trails and enjoy a fun summer of more EV miles in what I hope will be a warm and wonderful season.

      Hi D R-K, as always thanks for your continued support of my efforts here in the wonderland that is UA-cam!
      Yes, more positive experiences and real life situations that get told to people is the best way to get more new interest for possible EV adoption! That is why I try to do a lot of public outreach and go to events to actually talk with people who are interested but really don't know if an EV could fit into their lives! EVs are not for everyone, but with the current and growing choices that are out, we can address a bigger marketplace than ever before.
      Thanks for the summer best wishes and same to you.

      Hi Victor, thanks for watching as always and great to hear about your Kona! Yes, I think this patter of pretty well Zero Issues is going to resonate for most owners of EVs. Some may have a few small problems (like some of the Tesla products) but they can all get remedied.

    Great video Ken. We're coming up on our 1st year with our Model 3 on June 11. We've had our 2012 Leaf since April 2016 and even with a full charge on that being just 60 miles, it still serves my grandson very well for his needs around town.

      Thanks for watching and for feedback/comments. That is great on your M3, wow a year already too! Time flies!
      Perfect for your grandson use case. Same with me (no grandkids yet - whew not ready for that), a great use case for my wife or daughter in a few years as I'll probably get a second BEV in 3-5 years and pass down my Leaf to one of them. It's great to keep these in the family so many can take advantage of zero emissions!

    If you haven't tried it yet, the Nissan Connect route - finder on the web via PC gives you even more route options and more detailed charge estimates - you can input the temp of your trip, whether you're using HVAC, whether you'll drive at normal, faster, or slower speed, whether you'll charge on route (and whether to filter for only ChadeMO, or include Level 2), choose waypoints, and once it's calculated a route, see elevation graphs of it, and if you mouse-over the route see an estimated charge level for that segment. If you don't like the charger choices it makes, you can manually select some and it will calculate charge time to 80% for them. Then once you're satisfied with the route, you can export it to your car.

    • @EVRevolution

      Thanks again, I do use the website for tracking my monthly stats but have not tried the trip planner stuff. I shall have to give it a try.

      @EVRevolution  5 років тому +1

      Hi Walter, thanks for watching and for your situation. I'm pleased to hear that you want to get a BEV and that is my main passion for doing what I do. Whether it's a Leaf, Ioniq, Model 3 or any other. The main thing is get something with a Plug. Full electric is the best if you can, but I know that PHEVs provide a good option for many as well.
      The Ioniq is a great car too, we did look at that when we were shopping around last year. My wife loved the seats and interior more than the Leaf. I liked the versatility of the Leaf better as it has more space for use. You go with what works best for your driving needs, ergonomics and budget. Best of luck and I'd love to hear what you end up getting! You can always email me, show email contact info is at the end of every episode.

    Great video. I'm a proud owner of leaf 40 kwh. Once I slept in the car and it was nice and worm and it didn't use to much battery during the cold winter night. The only thing I didnt like was that there is no way to turn off the rear lights if you have the heater on and you are sleeping in the car. Cheers

    Can't complain about the solid build of my used '12 Leaf. After getting the battery replaced via warranty, it finally lost its first capacity bar....after 37,000 miles (~59,500km). Much better than the original battery that lost 4 capacity bars in 43,000 miles (~69,000km). Don't forget that the regen braking helps warm up the battery as well, another plus in winter.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  5 років тому

      Thanks Mark for watching and for your comments and experiences! Wow that is great to hear about your '12 Leaf. The warranty is a big deal for me and that is why I am not worried at all about my battery pack. If it degrades faster than it should, then I'll be covered under the warranty. So why worry about it!
      You are correct, the regen does help somewhat to warm up the battery in winter.
      Thanks again Mark for being one of the early adopters as it was a much riskier time back in '12 when you took the plunge! Appreciate you doing that!

    Nice update! Good to see all is going well with your Leaf. I am having same experience with my 2018 Leaf, i have put 22,750 miles on mine I am also coming up on a year in a couple months. I have had 0 issues with mine. I live in NE US so the cold also affected my Leaf, i don't have a garage but i do keep it plugged in and use the timer to pre-warm the car before i leave for work. No way to charge at work so i feel the range drop more coming back from work, never had issue with getting back even on the coldest nights (I work nights). I have a plan if i ever have range issue in winter on my way home i have 1 lvl 3 and 2 lvl 2 chargers that i have access to if needed. Keep up the great shows i love watching them. :)

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  5 років тому

      Hello Steven, thanks for watching and for your feedback/comments. Glad to hear your Leaf is holding up well too. Yes, the preconditioning for outside parking in winter months is key and good that you can plug it in at these times!
      Good to always have a plan for other chargers so you are not stranded. However as a last resort, Nissan also offers free 3-year roadside assistance so that is a fall back plan for me if A or B does not work!
      Thanks for enjoying my shows and keep me informed of how your Leaf continues to work over this next year!

    Good review Ken as always. I own the 2018 40kWh Tekna Model and mine has also been trouble free. I have covered a little over 16000 miles (over 25000 kilometers). I rapid charge my car nearly every day in the 8 months I've owned it and I am currently at 168 Rapid Charges and 297 L1/L2 charges which is about 150 fast charges, and a state of health of 94.53% as reported by Leaf Spy. This is significant in bursting the myth that Rapid Charging frequently degrades your battery faster in any notable manner. I did feel cheated though by Nissan when their announced range of over 200 miles just before launch did not quite match up to reality. Saying that, 150 miles ( here in the UK ) is plenty in range. My worst winter range in about 0°C was 110 miles (177km) and my best in about 20°C weather has been 146 miles (234 km) driving at an average speed of about 50 mph.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  Рік тому

      Thanks for watching and instead of "talking your mom into one", you just need to find out what her driving habits and needs are, if she can home charge and if this vehicle would work for her. The good thing is there is a lot more choice and this grows every year, so if it is a good fit for her, then great.

    • @pootispiker2866
      @pootispiker2866 Рік тому

      @@EVRevolution She wants an EV like I have! Her only concern is their reliability really. Though I should probably look at stuff with more range than the Leaf Plus

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  Рік тому +1

      @pootispiker2866 Great, sure there are more range offerings than the LeafPlus, and CHAdeMO for a fast-charger plug could be an issue for her, if she decides to travel longer distances. However, it is still a great BEV and one worth looking at for low costing. For reliability, it's safe to say that pretty well all BEVs offered today are great and I would expect them to operate fine for at least 10 years. All OEMs offer battery pack warranties of 8 years/100,000 miles (160,000 kms) with some even higher. With less moving parts and a simpler vehicle, they will last as long as a new ICEV today. The only caveat for the Leaf is that if one would do a lot of Fast Charging, like a few times a week, then I would not recommend this as it could degrade the battery capacity faster since the Leaf's have no thermal management system. Otherwise, it's not a problem.
      My uncle is retired, has a 2018 40kWh Leaf SL, with only 4,500 kms on it, and only charges it via 110/120V plug in his condo parking spot. He still has 100% battery charge at same range as when the car was new, and it now 5 years old. So it depends with the Leaf.
      Any other questions, please feel free to email me at EVRevolutionShow@gmail.com.

    Great video and review. And this helped me with my decision last year to upgrade my 2015 to a 2019 SV. I've had it for over a year now and love it.. Possibly more than my 2015, which was my first EV car. Lots of great upgrades on this new car. They made it even more usable. I opted for the tech and all weather packages so that I could enjoy the Pro Pilot Assist and Heat Pump. Great combination for a car I plan to keep for several years.

      Hello and thanks for watching! Sorry but not from me. I sold my Leaf in 2020 and purchased a Tesla Model 3 LR. We loved the Leaf and had no issues with it! However, I am in sales and need longer range so went with the most I could get in 2020. I did do a final review/op-ed piece on an Episode in the summer/fall of 2020 you can check out. However, the Leaf ran great and gave me no issues, was sad to see it go but we went from 3 vehicles (1 BEV, 2 ICEVs to 1BEV and 1 ICEV) - got rid of a tailpipe!

    I also have a 2018 Leaf with about 23,000 miles in 16 months. Planning to sell it this fall and purchase the 2019 e +. I always lease but I might just keep the 2019. Planning to put 16 tires instead of 17, with the heat pump hopping to get a epa ~ range of about 250 miles

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  5 років тому

      Hi Phil, thanks for watching and for your feedback and comments. That is great, you are really using your Leaf! Good for you if you can get into the e+. I think that is Nissan's sweet spot entry into this market that will check a vast majority of boxes for those willing to spend more than on the 40kWh version. I don't think you will be disappointed and maybe I might see myself in one, in 3-5 years. I tend to keep my cars for 8 years or so, so if I get something in a few years with a bigger battery, my current Leaf will be then used by my wife or daugther as their primary.

  • @donnolin2032

    Love your review. I also have a 2018 Leaf that just turned a year old. Like you there have been zero problems. Living in Florida there has been no issues with the E-pedal disengagement. I regularly get 180 miles range at 100% charge. Most charging is done air fast chargers since Nissan provides free charging for 2 years in the USA. The range is more than enough for my needs, so I have no desire to have a bigger battery. I positively love owning and driving this car. No way would I go back to an ICE vehicle. My previous car was a 2015 VW GTI which was great, but electric cars are the way to go.

    At about 18:25, it's worth noting that some finance companies have built-in penalty clauses for early payment. They want their pound of flesh.

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  5 років тому +1

      Thanks RWB, appreciate you watching and for the feedback. Yes that is sometimes correct, better to check if one can pay something off earlier without penalties, and if so what the costs are compared to continuing on with the finance at the rate purchased. Do the math if one is in a position to take advantage of lowering overall purchase costs. Our financier and most in Canada do allow for zero-penalty early payouts.

Battery is down to 68% Replacement battery cost $13,000 plus tax. Buy the largest battery you can get your hands on. The only other thing I've really had not work was route trace. It's strange - the setting is there, even one for how far apart it displays the dots indicating where you've been; but on or off, no dots appear on the map as I drive. I asked about it when I was at the dealership, and they couldn't fix it, which was a bit disappointing.

    The leaf have 3 major issues in my world. Lack of vertical adjustment of the steering wheel, your arms are almost fully stretched, I find that really bad. Lack of active battery heating, and last the choise of chademo, at least here in europe is abit strange. CCS seems to be the standard, and all new charging stations only supports that. It has other minor "bad" things compared to the competition, but those are the major ones, and the ones, that makes it completly uninteressting for me. But glad, that you like your car :)

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  5 років тому +1

      Hi Svik, thanks for watching and for your comments. With regards to my driving position, it's worked for me for over 40 years so not sure why you find that bad!
      Lack of active heating, not true the Leaf comes with a batter heater for cold climates.
      CHAdeMO, is not a problem in most areas but it is something to consider if for your region it may be a challenge to find this type of fast charging.
      As you say, it's uninteresting to you but not to me. My message is I am very glad that you seem interested in adoption of an EV into your lifestyle and if the Leaf does not interest you, then my hope is you look at the many other choices on the market and more coming soon.
      Base your needs on:
      - daily driving range needs (for the vast majority of your driving, what is your needed range, factor in colder months if you live in an area that suffers from this).
      - budget - stick within your budget and try to be as smart with your finances as possible - don't over extend yourself financially.
      - physical needs - the size of the vehicle, seat ergonomics for you the driver, other interior room needs (passenger room, boot space), etc. Buy what will do the job for your needs.
      Hope this helps!

      It depends on where you live and your charger situation in my opinion. Me for example, I live in Edmonton. Most of the major malls have chargers. My commute to work is less than 10km and when I travel to Calgary, there is actually a quick charger halfway between Edmonton and Calgary. So for me I would need a EV that can travel 180 km @ 120kmph. And the 40kwh Leaf as well as the e-Golf and Ioniq could work for me.

    • @mrspeigle1
      @mrspeigle1 5 років тому +1

      I think it depends opon your subjective needs.
      Generally bigger battery is better because your day to day usage will put less strain on the battery pack and the extra range will open up your commute options should you need to change jobs.
      However there is a substantial difference in price.
      Just my personal opinion, buy used or lease, the 18s are already in the low 20s in value that hit from depreciation is massive. If you do buy make sure you pay for the gap insurance otherwise a accident that totals the car could leave you holding the bag on the difference.

      I would have gotten the Plus if it had been available when I got mine, so same now. Like, for driving to Montreal from the GTA, with where the quick chargers are, I can't really do it in the depth of winter with my 40 kWh one without Level 2 charging. I did a test at -24 C with HVAC at 20 C, after pre-heating, and at 100 km/h went from 99%-16% in 84 km. I then went 3 km to a quick charger, plugged in at 14%, quick-charged to 80%, then went another 20 km and finished my journey with 64%. To be fair, the battery had been cold soaked at less than -15 C for three days prior. But keeping in mind that you'd normally only quick charge to 80% and for safety, start charging with a cushion in case the first charger you get to doesn't work, you're looking at 60-65% range between charges after the first one. 10 degrees C to more temperate temperatures are doable for that trip but colder than that and I'd look at alternatives.
      The other question is how important the features you'd get with the SL trim are. For example, for me, the Intelligent Around-View Monitor is definite plus.

      Great use case example @Walter. Just be aware that you won't be able to get that range at that speed in the winter months with the 40kWh. For the vast majority of your uses, both of your interests will fit fine!

    You might want to check you total year costs and the resulting cost per km, you have deducted the expected FMV rather than add the drop in value over the year. So for example your year 2 cost should be 29600 (FMV at end of yr1) less 23000 (FMV at end of yr2) = 6,600 plus the other costs of 2170 = a total of 8,770 CAD.

      Hello and thanks for watching! Congratulations on getting a Leaf this week and for joining the "EV Revolution"! Super stoked for you!
      Glad my video helped. I am unsure about Android as I don't use it, however I know that the Leaf does support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, however I'm not sure if they will route you to charge stations based on the Leaf's current SoC. I know in the Volvo XC Recharge I drove a few weeks ago, it uses an Android Google-based OS for it's system and working with Google Maps, did precisely that. You can check out my Episode on the XC 40 Recharge review to see it.
      The Leaf's built-in Sat Nav is pretty good. Not as flashy as others but still not too bad and it works. Nissan may have updated it a bit for the 40kWh version and you may want to inquire to your dealer (if you are buying new?) about the version of the SatNav and if it is up to date. Nissan may have added this feature along with waypoints and suggestions to route to chargers. I can't quite remember my setup.
      Best of luck and I'd love it if you sent me a pic of your new ride to post on a future episode! Email is EVRevolutionShow@gmail.com.

      Hello Arunava, thanks for watching. It's a genuine Nissan Accessory called Cargo Organizer. Cost about $250 which is high, however I do like it and even with it installed, with the back seats folded down I was still able to carry 8 tires/wheels. I like it as it creates a flat-floor aspect with the seats folded down. Other than the gap for the SubWoofer, the flat aspect is good for putting in long items and a bike, as an example.
      I may be getting my hands on a slightly used one which I may sell so if you follow my twitter, stay tuned on that. I may get one to sell in order to support a charity.

I will say that when my Lease is up, (Yes I drive for GH and lease, Nissan has lowest over mileage in market at $0.15/mile) I wont be getting another Leaf if Nissan doesn’t switch to CCS.. Here in the US, it’s almost all CCS (Michigan) and doesn’t look like that’s going to change. I may go for a used Tesla Model S or 3 depending on used market pricing or a Kia Soul EV (I really love the new look)....

    I just got. 2018 ev used , so far pretty good , torque on these cars is great - range not so much but you can charge during-off peak hours and fuel up for pennies . EVs are the future , hydrogen is fuel cell is next .

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  2 роки тому

      Hello Veronicca, much thanks for watching and that's great news on your used EV! Congratulations on joining the "Revolution"! Yes you are correct, the 40kWh Leaf Range is so-so, but for many it's well enough for everyday driving use cases. I really loved my 2018 Leaf but for my line of work (real job it IT Sales), I have a big geography to cover and really need the most range I can get, especially living in a cold-climate area (Southern Ontario, Canada). If the Leaf had 480kms of range and could DCFC greater than 175kW, I would have kept it for sure.
      And yes, it is pennies in most places to charge overnight (cost me $5 to get 400kms of range) and EVs are definitely part of the future. If Hydrogen fuelling could be made as plentiful as Petrol/Gas or EV chargers today for consumers, it would be a no-brainer. However, we are far behind in consumer-based FCEV adoption and BEV's are here and very capable now!

Hydrogen cars are already around though . Honda Toyota and Hyundai have those and they use hydrogen fuel cells- a technology used since the space age began . We have to develop a hydrogen infrastructure that could take another 75 to 100 years. In California we are seeing these cars - the hydrogen models out right now and they are refueling at stations in the LA area . Slow progress but hydrogen is the future .

    How often do you need to charge tires due to weight of the car and torque?

    • @EVRevolution
      @EVRevolution  2 роки тому

      Thanks for watching and for the question. True that BEVs do "chew" thru tires a bit more than regular vehicles due to the heavier weights and more powerful acceleration and torque. I can't give you a definitive rule of thumb on this as each tire wears differently, FWD vs. RWD vs. AWD setups, driving style, changing sets for the winter, etc. However, I would think in a general driving sense that tires will wear a bit sooner, maybe 10K less than rated. Best thing is to rotate tires frequently (if RWD or FWD) and use a good set of winter tires for that season. Being easier on the throttle will help as most importantly, proper inflation pressures and continuous checks. A good tire guage as well is an invaluable tool to show current thread depth, which should not be allowed to go below the recommended safety level.

    • @thelondonbroiler
      @thelondonbroiler 5 років тому

      I should elaborate. I'm not excited about another Toyota EV, because they don't have a great track record producing BEVs, their seeming disregard for BEVs, and that they're using an ICE vehicle as the platform.
      What is exciting? The potential for another EV on the road is most always a good thing. Toyota has APPARENTLY done some work with solid state batteries and maybe, just maybe, this will be implemented here (probably not).
      I still own a Corolla with close to a quarter million miles on it, it's been a great car, and I believe Toyota does a great job building cars overall. The CHr just doesn't "do it" for me. I stand by past comments, a more spacious vehicle would likely draw more interest. There are some cool things about the ICE version, but it's a quirky vehicle overall. Hope they do a good job with it and that it is successful.

      Hello Eamonn, thanks for watching and appreciate your feedback and questions.
      My driving is a good mix of city and highway overall. I would say 60/40 split. I'm in IT Sales and my main coverage area is Southern Ontario, so I mainly drive around the Greater Toronto Area but get to Ottawa to the east and Windsor to the west. North to Barrie and a bit beyond.
      The 270 would have been pretty well city driving, in eco mode with e-pedal. Typically city speeds are avg. 60 kph and for highway, I try to keep it at 102kph max. Sometimes of course I'll go a bit quicker if I'm not worrying about range and if traffic is moving the same. My main style is defensive driving with safety in mind always.

      Thanks for the sub and the feedback! Appreciate it! Yes I do this Channel to support the cause of EV adoption, but am also a realist so try to explain the news and benefits to people. I loved my Leaf as well, but did sell it to get a Tesla Model 3, which I had originally pre-ordered in April of 2016. Could not wait for the base model in 2018 when they were delivering to Canada, as our rebate provincially was going away so got the Leaf. Drove it for over 2 years with not an issue! Great car, I just needed more range for my real job in sales, where I have a pretty big area to cover here in Southern Ontario. Thanks for joining the "EV Revolution" with your Leaf purchase and if you have any questions about it, please feel free to email me at EVRevolutionShow@gmail.com.

      Hi, lol! Yes we have a lot of road bikers around our area. I do a bit of mountain biking myself! Thanks for watching!
