I agree with your conclusion. I think the 40 kWh leaf is a sweet spot. It doubles the range of the first gen leaf, and that makes regional rather than just local driving possible. Unless you are long distance road-tripping rapidgate is not an issue. The car is nice to drive, has 1/3 more power/torque than the first one. Feels wider and more spacious as well. A note on the rapidgate side: I recently did a rural work trip (300 miles) where I usually would have flown, just to test out the 2018. If you have to do trips over 200 miles regularly relying on quick chargers, it’s true, this is not the car for you. On the way home I sat for three hours on a Nissan dealers level 2 when my car was at 51 Celsius/125 F. The high speed freeways of the US do not allow you to safely get down to a speed slow enough where the battery can cool off. Anything over 60mph with high ambient temps and the battery temp continues rising. That said, now I know. (Edited to add both Fahrenheit & Celsius)
Got the leaf+ 60kwh and I'm so happy with it that I have put 10k km in 2 months. Have only rapid charges 3 times since the range is so good. Charge at max speed of charger every time. I've made many road trips and my average travel is going visiting my family more than 300 kms round trip at least weekly without stopping for charging. I test drive every ev before buying even the tesla model 3 but the leaf win simply because it the best family car and it's so quiet. I live in Canada and the supercharger network is so bad I can't go visit my family in winter also paint problem due to all the abrasive put on the road. Kona is to small, niro inexistant and way to pricy, Bolt so behind in technology it's worst than the first generation leaf. Must point out Chademo and CCS is mandatory on all public charger here.
I know you've been on a bit of a break for a while now but I just wanted to say I've enjoyed going through your old videos over the past few months and tomorrow I'm trading in my Honda CR-V for a Nissan Leaf. There are at least three major issues buyers have with Nissan Leaf 2 in the U.S. Issue 1: price per max range. It's about $205/mile for a 40kW battery and about $160/mile for a 62kW battery that brings price for a Nissan Leaf 2 close to the Tesla Model 3 Plus (costs about $163/mile). Issue 2: charge to 80% capacity from 0% will take around 1 hour. Issue 3: previous generation of Nissan Leaf had a quick battery degradation. Partially, due to passive battery cooling system. Nissan Leaf 2 have all chances to inherit this problem since battery pack has a passive cooling system. Add all these factors together and you will see why sales of Nissan Leaf 2 are slow in the U.S.

Also interesting that Nissan are sticking with Chademo but seem to be keeping very quiet about a big advantage it has over CCS, it allows bi directional charging, potentially allowing your car to power, house grid etc. Maybe not a huge advantage now, but could help immensely in the future.
Paul Cox Sadly, just like Betamax lost out to VHS despite being a superior standard, Chademo has already lost out to CCS. When even Renault, which is part of the same alliance and owns 40% of Nissan, decided to go with CCS, just like every other manufacturer including Tesla in Europe with the Model 3, Chademo is done.
@@cjmillsnun Thanks, as I understand it CCS can allow bi-directional charging but you do need the hardware in your charger, hence the confusion with Tesla, when someone stripped one down and found what they thought to be the hardware, which turned out to be false. Most manufactures do not install CCS chargers that allow this although the New Hyundi & Kia with 800v systems do.
5 years ago when I bought my leaf I was worried that I might be throwing my money away. I am pleased to say the leaf has turned out to be excellent buy. One of the plus points of the 40kw leaf to me is proven technology used in it My leaf has given me 5 years of trouble free motoring the only thing I have had to replace is three and the pollen filter. I bought my 24kw leaf it was an ex-demonstrator now I am considering upgrading to the 40kw leaf and probably look for another ex-demonstrator thus saving 000s of pounds.
Hi Ryan. Thanks for the review and hurrah for the Leaf! We’ve been umming and ahhing between a second hand 40kw Leaf (5000m, £20k) and an MG ZS EV (which we’ve already put down a deposit for). Having been driving a 24kw leaf for over 2 years, we know what you mean about how nice and familiar it feels. In fact, we’re sold on it to the extent that we’re planning to go and pick it up at the weekend. Only thing left to do is take along our Leaf Spy and make sure they haven’t been mistreating it at the showroom (it’s a demo only model from early 2018)...
You brought up a point about Chademo not being supported in the future - I was amazed seeing that the Electric Forecourt in Braintree has twelve Chademo chargers and said all of their future ones will support "all EVs" so they'll be putting them in at all of their future ones - Makes me feel much better about holding onto my Leaf.
Did a 380 mile trip in my leaf 2.zero recently. Weather was poor and lots of surface water so the consumption wasnt good, but stook to 65mph smooth. I have the new BMS update. That was reluctantly installed from nissan after months of complaints. The first rapid 43kw, 2nd 30kw. Then hit problems on the next 3rd. Restricted to 22kw at a battery temp of 54 degrees. Apparently it only charges at 12kw if it's any hotter! Now a 20 minute fuel stop now becomes a 40+ min fuel stop due to slow charging speed. Our return journey was planned to significant detail. We got lucky with a strong tail wind and charged around 30% up to 85%. Careful not to add too much heat to the battery. This car from my experience is limited to 300 miles per day after the BMS update. I am glad I have done the trip now as the LEAF is my main car. But next week I'll be selling it 24k miles 19 months old. The car has a significant flaw, not having thermal management on the battery.
@@Nobody_Famous Save money for the next 6 months for a Tesla model 3. The supercharge infrastructure is a massive plus. But I quite like the spec and technology of the 2020 Corsa e. Tbh it makes the 40kwh Leaf look like it should be in a EV museum.
Andy Indeed, it’s sad to see Nissan having squandered their early lead in EVs. No thermal management might have been fine 10 or even 5 years ago. But when almost every other EV on the market (bar the eGolf) has it, it’s simply inexcusable.
Had my 2018 40Kwh now for 6 months and I love it. No issues with rapid charging - I don't do a lot but it handles the odd 200 mile trip just fine - probably will get the update done at the next service though.

I own a Zoe and I own my battery I also have three children 17 ,15,13 we have no problems in going away in it not much smaller than the leaf but much better
@@jasondawes684 I've had 2 Zoe's. An R240 and a Q210. Charging issues with both. I have a Leaf 30kWh Tekna now. The Leaf is better built and will charge when plugged in. Everytime. So how is the Zoe "much better" in your opinion?
Great informative video Ryan, fair play to you and your lovely wife. I think the Leaf is a fantastic car, ok on really long journeys you would have to stop and charge but people stop on long journeys anyway for break so there would be no problem there. I will be purchasing a 40kw next year brand new out of the box and I plan on keeping it for a good number of years. The range in the 40kw would suit me down to the ground, only trouble I have is which colour to get lol. Great video 👍🏻
Actually, the Nissan steering wheel is an exemple in putting a LOT of control at your fingertips in a way that is super easy to grasp. Every selection of buttons looks daunting at first, but the way Nissan did this is pretty much as good as it gets. Reason is, that the dPad is pretty much universal, everybody knows how to handle one of those and it works exactly like you would think it does (it IS posible to screw this up *CoffMercedesCoff* indeed!). You have a back button, which again does what generation smartphone would reckon it to do, you have (fast)forward and (fast)reverse for audio horizontally (THANKS for that one, it's amazing how many manufacturers get that wrong) and louder/softer. The rest is cruise control and phone, all in plain sight, almost all on function per button and very linear to use. I think this is way better than most of not all others, and it takes very little time to establish muscle memory for this type of setup.
Good review and will be buying one sometime in the future,Family input reminds us its a car and to be enjoyed by all the family....with Gadgets to keep the male population Happy......
My brother just bought a leaf, he had to buy a v8 to go tow his boat but then sold his minivan for a leaf. The old leaves tanked on resale so they can be bought for great prices nowadays.
Had my 2 Zero for 16 months now, had the update on first service, never had an issue. Now we also have a Kona this gets used for long distance stuff and the leaf for local journeys. Ideal combination, but I would have no hesitation to use the leaf for a longer journey if swmbo had pinched the Kona which she usually does!
I was always interested in a Nissan Leaf.....but recently with all the negativity about the battery management and people saying that the after sales with Nissan was not as good as expected I have become uncertain about going any further with one.....that and the fact that they don't seem to be advancing as fast as other car makers. I still have my deposit down for the MG and I consider it to be a much improved vehicle.....the build quality of the one I have test driven was far better than I ever expected and I am sure that a company the size of SAIC knows how to build cars to a good standard.
Wife has now sold her 40kW Leaf after 15months(sold to Nissan ). Car is fine, no big faults. Problem was 150miles is just not enough for her now. Her journeys are longer and she doesn't like using public chargers, too slow and too unreliable. Was 1 week away from picking up her E-niro replacement, then sat in a Tesla model 3, there was no way the e-niro could compare to it. Yes the Tesla was £3K more and the boot on the Tesla is not as good as the e-niros hatch back, this was a big compremise, but Tesla won out in all other metrics, e-niro cancelled. The Leaf is a good car, but the materials used were impossible to keep clean, and the plastics marked really easy. Leaf is now overpriced, £40K+ for a tekna 60kW, honestly why? . It uses an near obsolete and slow chadamo system, no liquid cooling, dated interior and a phone app that is laughable, only Nissan fans will put a £40k leaf above a Tesla base version. Even the entry 40kW Leaf is poor value compared to others.
Owned mine for 12 months now, no great dramas. Software update done without issue. I have done three biggish trips. Edinburgh to Stafford, Edinburgh to Belfast and Edinburgh to Penrith. All easily achieved with only one (the day trip to Stafford) causing charging to be throttled right back on our 7th rapid charge. Just wish it had a better infotainment system built in. Having a 2016 sat nav in a 2018 / 2019 model car is unforgivable Nissan
I wouldn't buy another Leaf if it doesn't have CCS or battery thermal management. The Leaf is still a 2011 or earlier chassis and it feels it and so I have concerns that the safety hasn't moved on as much as others.
Do you purchase your cars or do you lease? Would you consider a lease ? I don't think the Leaf will retain much of their value once more EV's come out with the ease of use and features you want.. including being able to rapidly charge and being thermally cooled. BUT, if you plan on purchasing this car and keeping it for a good 10 years or so.. and you already know your lifestyle doesn't warrant the repeated need for fast charging, then I hope you get a great deal on a new fully specked version, if you choose to purchase this. I think many will go for a lot less second hand when compared to other brands, and be less desirable given how much the landscape will have grown and changed in the next 8 years, so if resale value matters, please keep that in mind. Looking forward to hearing what you choose and of course... what the kids think.
Motoring journalists won't like it but this type of review is so much more helpful - real people, real situations. Quick question on Chademo - would it be possible to have an adapter so you could use CCS?
The 62kwh leaf has fans that help cool the batteries just like in the NV-200e and I hear that helped a lot actually. Whether they changed the battery chemistry and supplier (which I also heard) or it's just a more efficient battery I wonder why Nissan didn't just do it from the start. After I try the Chevy Bolt I'll finally make a decision on my first ever EV!
Justin M I was under the impression from a number of sources (e.g. cleantechnica.com/2019/07/02/initial-testing-suggests-new-62-kwh-nissan-leaf-suffers-from-rapidgate-on-longer-trips/) that the new 62 kWh Leaf does NOT in fact include the fan cooling system from the NV-200e.
My 2.Zero fits in perfectly with my lifestyle, mainly local , often with passengers, occasional longer trips. No charging problems, no reliability problems. What makes a car dated? There are hundreds of people whose sole purpose in life is to make you want 'new', even when new is rehashed old style. I expect the re-appearance of 'wings' and chrome bumpers soon for the go faster morons. For battery cooling I rather like the simplicity of the battery pack, Fully waterproof and large enough for standard use. On long trips I have found that the charging time works in with breaks for the small children being carried. Battery temp did not raise high even on third rapid of the day, in July.
We have a 1st generation Japanese Leaf with less than 10k miles, and very happy with it as it's range is fine for most of our driving and we have a ICE car for longer trips. We tried a 40kwh Leaf on a short test drive and liked it, but couldn't justify the extra cost compared to a 24kwh. Since then I've seen reports of poor Nissan service and read the reliability issues on the Fancy a Bev Mate series, both of which are important factors which put me off. Nissan made a good start with the original Leaf but seem to have been lazy and done the minimum with the latest Leaf, e.g. the battery cooling and the very clear use of parts from the 24/30 kwh Leaf, plus some daft design decisions with the interior, plus corporate changes which are affecting customers. These negative factors are played against the positive points which is that it is basically a good family and is available used right now at about £10k less than EVs offered by other manufacturers. On balance, my decision would be to look long and hard for a used Ionic electric or wait for a Kia e-Niro.
What is the max miles per kwh anyone on here has achieved on the 40kwh leaf. I have had the 30kwh for 16 months now and have been running some tests for the best I can push it. I achieved 4.6 on one run. I am still doing more tests though. I have asked the dealer for a day test drive to compare, before I decide on any upgrade.
Hi Ryan. I’m a former Leaf40 owner and while I owned it I realized there were far too many compromises with the car. The negatives greatly outnumbered any positives. Realistically I was happy to change and I’m much more satisfied with my current EV. As a city car the Leaf40 is fine but don’t expect anything else from it. Sadly the errors Nissan made on the 40 have been repeated with the 60. Bad move Nissan. 👎
This is why we have a Leaf and an ICE car (Golf). As a family we would normally have two cars anway, 95% of the trips are in the Leaf, if we need to go farther afield we use the other car.
It is not a new car. It is a well executed facelift of your 24 kWh. Yes the suspension is a bit more European and yes the electric motor is more powerful. But dont be to blinded by the sentimental 'value'. The battery is really just an evolution to the 30 kWh pack and will fit to your 24 kWh (bms will be reading wrong though) and outdated. This car would have been great in 2015 if rapidgate was solved. Go for the MG or settle with the new Zoe or better wait a year and get a used e-Niro. Your wife might want a Tesla but she would panic using AP in a model 3 (my wife have banned AP when she is in the car) and it is a sedan not a hatch back so it is not that practical (personally I dont care). But the frunk is perfect for picking up pizza and fast food without smelling up the car 😂 That aside, the Model 3 is simply amazing and - I swear (I have the same hairdo as you) - that I have started growing hair 😂😂😂

Hi. Can you answer a question? Just bought a 2014 leaf and not sure what I should expect from mileage. Drove it back from the garage , 6 miles, and its dropped 20 miles from a full charge of 79 miles! I am new and don't know if I should panic and return it within my 7 day grace period. I have ordered an OBDII and will start monitoring, but just wondered what your thoughts might be. It has done 31500 miles. Thank you!! Great channel by the way!!

i am considering buying the new 40kw leaf i was looking for reviews about it on you tube i came across the rapid gate issue and i was beginning to have doubts about buying it but thankfully i came across your review which i thought was very honest.i live in ireland and i know i would not have to rapid charge it to often i agree with you that the interior looks a bit dated but im 63 i have 6 grandkids its time we started to change our greedy ways and try and leave some kind of a future for them
Are you considere the Ioniq? I think it has a similar price in the second hand market. Similar range and considerably more efficient. Quicker CCS 70kw charging.
I understand that we need to change our lives and expectations in order to move away from fossil fuels, but....... you ask the question, "would you find it irritating to spend longer than twenty minutes adding 70 miles?". You betcha! This is still the problem isn't it; in an ICE car, plus caravan on the back, a motorway service visit for me is a 5 minute toilet break plus another 5 minutes if refueling is required (it usually isn't because of the range of an ICE car). I just don't believe a full EV is ever going to be able to match this, which is why I think the PHEV is going to be the answer for me. Unfortunately the PHEVs just don't yet have the electric range for everyday use. I also think that PHEVs should use diesel (horror of horrors) because petrol sitting in a tank for too long unused is going to go off.
richard greenwood I think EVs will be able to do what you asked before you think but for now, you’re right. It’s not for you. Keep an eye on what’s coming and hopefully you’ll be able to make the switch one day 👍
How tall are you and how far back was the seat? It looks like you had good legroom. I’m test driving a new Leaf tomorrow and I’m hoping I fit, I’m 6ft8.
It's a fine cheap car I guess for people who hardly drive at all, like old fashioned clutter all over the place, and used to very low expectations from everyday vehicles. It gets you from point a to point b for those who don't really want to drive so if it's all that matters it's perfectly fine.
I rather the Old fashioned clutter than the big ugly tablets that manufacturers are throwing on the center console and dashboard which I think looks ugly as hell. The old fashioned clutter will last a whole lot longer than any LCD screen will. I am not a technology hater. I love most types of technology and own a 13.3" tablet myself but planting tablets on a cars interior is not what I like.
The only reason why this car is cheaper as it has little or no battery management that over the long term will mean the battery will need replacing sooner than other batteries with real battery management systems they could just change to charge socket on the car to CCS really there is nothing to change a bit of plastic and as you can see they drop in price quickly since for older ones but that is bad looking the big back end is horrible and the massive headlights that if damage will cost a lot to replace and for the insurance group is higher than the 16 or 17 for the ioniq
I have had leafs from my first 11 plate 8 years ago to being the very first person in the country to own the 30 KW which when I sold it had done 110'000 miles and lost 2 bars. With both of my leafs I've had major problems which had to be sent away to one of only 2 garages in the country that can deal with high power part of the vehicle. The new leaf only has a 38 KW useable battery which will only cover around 140 miles. I feel the leaf is well over priced now I unfortunately I hate say this but I would never buy another leaf 😞. I now own a Renualt Zoe which has a 45 KW battery and 41 KW useable energy and boy it's so much better on miles I get easily 180 miles and quite often 195 miles and it's so much cheaper. I have also just ordered a MG ZS EV which has really good write ups and it's bigger than the leaf charges faster and has liquid cooled batteries and it's much cheaper so why would you buy a second hand leaf 38 KW for more money and a car that has only been face lifted. I've spoken to a few dealers were their sales have dropped off.
You missed the best part, it only costs £26 345 (after government grants) for the face lifted base model, I can't think of anything cheaper that a family on a budget might consider. Anything but this you say? Well, okay, that might have some truth in it but I say....oh shut up! It's an EV, anyone who drives one farts perfume that only helps restore the ozone. Scientific fact (citation needed😏).
It's funny how Nissan say it's a update and not a recall because if they did recall it they would have admitted there was something wrong with it ...we done 18k miles in my 2.zero after 10 months we really struggled with charging on longer journeys our next car was tekna 40kwh had the update what difference ...good for what they are but have a niro now it's flippin next level truly awesome ev but the leaf was a market leader but somehow are being left behind like i said there are good cars but they could have been awesome plus the way they went about rapidgate is really deceitful I've lost confidence in the brand.
Ironic, or what, when doing your piece to camera you audio is drowned out by streams of ICE cars. Does any one know how electrically reliably the latest leaf is? I mean internal knob and stuff. The Nissan Qashqai has a bad reputation! How are the internal rattles and squeaks. They become very annoying in an EV.
The men need to get some women in their design department?? I work in one and I assure you there are women, actually I would guess that a women was responsible for the bad ergo in the knees area, reason being that when I drive my Leaf I can´t relax my leg too much otherwise it will rub against that hard edge, whereas my wife in spite of obviously having much wider hips has her knees far from that edge when she is in a relaxed driving position. After all the nonsensical men-spreading "problem" has a foundation of truth.
Nissan Leaf sounds like a wife/husband, and you are comparing it to a girlfriend/boyfriend. For a family you need a wife/husband, not a boyfriend/girlfriend. 😉
Owned ours now for 17 months. Had the update, no problem charging. Works really well for us, in fact we go out more than we did in the previous car.

Most manufactures do not install CCS chargers that allow this although the New Hyundi & Kia with 800v systems do.
5 years ago when I bought my leaf I was worried that I might be throwing my money away.
I am pleased to say the leaf has turned out to be excellent buy.
One of the plus points of the 40kw leaf to me is proven technology used in it
My leaf has given me 5 years of trouble free motoring the only thing I have had to replace is three and the pollen filter.
I bought my 24kw leaf it was an ex-demonstrator now I am considering upgrading to the 40kw leaf and probably look for another ex-demonstrator thus saving 000s of pounds.
Hi Ryan. Thanks for the review and hurrah for the Leaf! We’ve been umming and ahhing between a second hand 40kw Leaf (5000m, £20k) and an MG ZS EV (which we’ve already put down a deposit for). Having been driving a 24kw leaf for over 2 years, we know what you mean about how nice and familiar it feels. In fact, we’re sold on it to the extent that we’re planning to go and pick it up at the weekend. Only thing left to do is take along our Leaf Spy and make sure they haven’t been mistreating it at the showroom (it’s a demo only model from early 2018)...
It's impressively quiet in the car while you are driving. Sounds so smooth and relaxing.

You brought up a point about Chademo not being supported in the future - I was amazed seeing that the Electric Forecourt in Braintree has twelve Chademo chargers and said all of their future ones will support "all EVs" so they'll be putting them in at all of their future ones - Makes me feel much better about holding onto my Leaf.

Did a 380 mile trip in my leaf 2.zero recently. Weather was poor and lots of surface water so the consumption wasnt good, but stook to 65mph smooth.
I have the new BMS update. That was reluctantly installed from nissan after months of complaints.
The first rapid 43kw, 2nd 30kw. Then hit problems on the next 3rd. Restricted to 22kw at a battery temp of 54 degrees. Apparently it only charges at 12kw if it's any hotter!
Now a 20 minute fuel stop now becomes a 40+ min fuel stop due to slow charging speed.
Our return journey was planned to significant detail. We got lucky with a strong tail wind and charged around 30% up to 85%. Careful not to add too much heat to the battery.
This car from my experience is limited to 300 miles per day after the BMS update.
I am glad I have done the trip now as the LEAF is my main car.
But next week I'll be selling it 24k miles 19 months old.
The car has a significant flaw, not having thermal management on the battery.

Indeed, it’s sad to see Nissan having squandered their early lead in EVs. No thermal management might have been fine 10 or even 5 years ago. But when almost every other EV on the market (bar the eGolf) has it, it’s simply inexcusable.
There are no ports for air to flow "through" the battery pack that I can find. Just passive IR. Other than that, outstanding review!
Had my 2018 40Kwh now for 6 months and I love it. No issues with rapid charging - I don't do a lot but it handles the odd 200 mile trip just fine - probably will get the update done at the next service though.
This is what I've gleaned from watching this video, in case of a zombie apocalypse, you'll need someone like her by your side...√!
I'm looking at the Leaf, for me, they are more practical than Teslas in the long run. Your videos are great in the real world sense.

I own a Zoe and I own my battery I also have three children 17 ,15,13 we have no problems in going away in it not much smaller than the leaf but much better
@@jasondawes684 I've had 2 Zoe's. An R240 and a Q210. Charging issues with both. I have a Leaf 30kWh Tekna now. The Leaf is better built and will charge when plugged in. Everytime. So how is the Zoe "much better" in your opinion?

Great informative video Ryan, fair play to you and your lovely wife. I think the Leaf is a fantastic car, ok on really long journeys you would have to stop and charge but people stop on long journeys anyway for break so there would be no problem there. I will be purchasing a 40kw next year brand new out of the box and I plan on keeping it for a good number of years. The range in the 40kw would suit me down to the ground, only trouble I have is which colour to get lol. Great video 👍🏻

Actually, the Nissan steering wheel is an exemple in putting a LOT of control at your fingertips in a way that is super easy to grasp. Every selection of buttons looks daunting at first, but the way Nissan did this is pretty much as good as it gets. Reason is, that the dPad is pretty much universal, everybody knows how to handle one of those and it works exactly like you would think it does (it IS posible to screw this up *CoffMercedesCoff* indeed!). You have a back button, which again does what generation smartphone would reckon it to do, you have (fast)forward and (fast)reverse for audio horizontally (THANKS for that one, it's amazing how many manufacturers get that wrong) and louder/softer. The rest is cruise control and phone, all in plain sight, almost all on function per button and very linear to use. I think this is way better than most of not all others, and it takes very little time to establish muscle memory for this type of setup.

My brother just bought a leaf, he had to buy a v8 to go tow his boat but then sold his minivan for a leaf. The old leaves tanked on resale so they can be bought for great prices nowadays.
Had my 2 Zero for 16 months now, had the update on first service, never had an issue. Now we also have a Kona this gets used for long distance stuff and the leaf for local journeys. Ideal combination, but I would have no hesitation to use the leaf for a longer journey if swmbo had pinched the Kona which she usually does!
I was always interested in a Nissan Leaf.....but recently with all the negativity about the battery management and people saying that the after sales with Nissan was not as good as expected I have become uncertain about going any further with one.....that and the fact that they don't seem to be advancing as fast as other car makers. I still have my deposit down for the MG and I consider it to be a much improved vehicle.....the build quality of the one I have test driven was far better than I ever expected and I am sure that a company the size of SAIC knows how to build cars to a good standard.
Wife has now sold her 40kW Leaf after 15months(sold to Nissan ). Car is fine, no big faults. Problem was 150miles is just not enough for her now. Her journeys are longer and she doesn't like using public chargers, too slow and too unreliable. Was 1 week away from picking up her E-niro replacement, then sat in a Tesla model 3, there was no way the e-niro could compare to it. Yes the Tesla was £3K more and the boot on the Tesla is not as good as the e-niros hatch back, this was a big compremise, but Tesla won out in all other metrics, e-niro cancelled.
The Leaf is a good car, but the materials used were impossible to keep clean, and the plastics marked really easy. Leaf is now overpriced, £40K+ for a tekna 60kW, honestly why? . It uses an near obsolete and slow chadamo system, no liquid cooling, dated interior and a phone app that is laughable, only Nissan fans will put a £40k leaf above a Tesla base version. Even the entry 40kW Leaf is poor value compared to others.
Owned mine for 12 months now, no great dramas. Software update done without issue. I have done three biggish trips. Edinburgh to Stafford, Edinburgh to Belfast and Edinburgh to Penrith. All easily achieved with only one (the day trip to Stafford) causing charging to be throttled right back on our 7th rapid charge. Just wish it had a better infotainment system built in. Having a 2016 sat nav in a 2018 / 2019 model car is unforgivable Nissan
I wouldn't buy another Leaf if it doesn't have CCS or battery thermal management.
The Leaf is still a 2011 or earlier chassis and it feels it and so I have concerns that the safety hasn't moved on as much as others.
Great review, now trying to decide between the Leaf and MG ZS ev both seem good cars so a hard choice.
Do you purchase your cars or do you lease? Would you consider a lease ? I don't think the Leaf will retain much of their value once more EV's come out with the ease of use and features you want.. including being able to rapidly charge and being thermally cooled. BUT, if you plan on purchasing this car and keeping it for a good 10 years or so.. and you already know your lifestyle doesn't warrant the repeated need for fast charging, then I hope you get a great deal on a new fully specked version, if you choose to purchase this.
I think many will go for a lot less second hand when compared to other brands, and be less desirable given how much the landscape will have grown and changed in the next 8 years, so if resale value matters, please keep that in mind. Looking forward to hearing what you choose and of course... what the kids think.
Motoring journalists won't like it but this type of review is so much more helpful - real people, real situations. Quick question on Chademo - would it be possible to have an adapter so you could use CCS?
The 62kwh leaf has fans that help cool the batteries just like in the NV-200e and I hear that helped a lot actually. Whether they changed the battery chemistry and supplier (which I also heard) or it's just a more efficient battery I wonder why Nissan didn't just do it from the start. After I try the Chevy Bolt I'll finally make a decision on my first ever EV!

I was under the impression from a number of sources (e.g. cleantechnica.com/2019/07/02/initial-testing-suggests-new-62-kwh-nissan-leaf-suffers-from-rapidgate-on-longer-trips/) that the new 62 kWh Leaf does NOT in fact include the fan cooling system from the NV-200e.
My 2.Zero fits in perfectly with my lifestyle, mainly local , often with passengers, occasional longer trips. No charging problems, no reliability problems.
What makes a car dated? There are hundreds of people whose sole purpose in life is to make you want 'new', even when new is rehashed old style. I expect the re-appearance of 'wings' and chrome bumpers soon for the go faster morons.
For battery cooling I rather like the simplicity of the battery pack, Fully waterproof and large enough for standard use. On long trips I have found that the charging time works in with breaks for the small children being carried. Battery temp did not raise high even on third rapid of the day, in July.

We have a 1st generation Japanese Leaf with less than 10k miles, and very happy with it as it's range is fine for most of our driving and we have a ICE car for longer trips. We tried a 40kwh Leaf on a short test drive and liked it, but couldn't justify the extra cost compared to a 24kwh. Since then I've seen reports of poor Nissan service and read the reliability issues on the Fancy a Bev Mate series, both of which are important factors which put me off. Nissan made a good start with the original Leaf but seem to have been lazy and done the minimum with the latest Leaf, e.g. the battery cooling and the very clear use of parts from the 24/30 kwh Leaf, plus some daft design decisions with the interior, plus corporate changes which are affecting customers. These negative factors are played against the positive points which is that it is basically a good family and is available used right now at about £10k less than EVs offered by other manufacturers. On balance, my decision would be to look long and hard for a used Ionic electric or wait for a Kia e-Niro.
What is the max miles per kwh anyone on here has achieved on the 40kwh leaf. I have had the 30kwh for 16 months now and have been running some tests for the best I can push it. I achieved 4.6 on one run. I am still doing more tests though.
I have asked the dealer for a day test drive to compare, before I decide on any upgrade.
I love the comments your wife made about Tesla. I wish mine would prefer a Tesla.
Hi Ryan. I’m a former Leaf40 owner and while I owned it I realized there were far too many compromises with the car. The negatives greatly outnumbered any positives. Realistically I was happy to change and I’m much more satisfied with my current EV. As a city car the Leaf40 is fine but don’t expect anything else from it. Sadly the errors Nissan made on the 40 have been repeated with the 60. Bad move Nissan. 👎

This is why we have a Leaf and an ICE car (Golf). As a family we would normally have two cars anway, 95% of the trips are in the Leaf, if we need to go farther afield we use the other car.
It is not a new car. It is a well executed facelift of your 24 kWh.
Yes the suspension is a bit more European and yes the electric motor is more powerful. But dont be to blinded by the sentimental 'value'.
The battery is really just an evolution to the 30 kWh pack and will fit to your 24 kWh (bms will be reading wrong though) and outdated.
This car would have been great in 2015 if rapidgate was solved.
Go for the MG or settle with the new Zoe or better wait a year and get a used e-Niro.
Your wife might want a Tesla but she would panic using AP in a model 3 (my wife have banned AP when she is in the car) and it is a sedan not a hatch back so it is not that practical (personally I dont care).
But the frunk is perfect for picking up pizza and fast food without smelling up the car 😂
That aside, the Model 3 is simply amazing and - I swear (I have the same hairdo as you) - that I have started growing hair 😂😂😂

Hi. Can you answer a question? Just bought a 2014 leaf and not sure what I should expect from mileage. Drove it back from the garage , 6 miles, and its dropped 20 miles from a full charge of 79 miles! I am new and don't know if I should panic and return it within my 7 day grace period. I have ordered an OBDII and will start monitoring, but just wondered what your thoughts might be. It has done 31500 miles. Thank you!! Great channel by the way!!

i am considering buying the new 40kw leaf i was looking for reviews about it on you tube i came across the rapid gate issue and i was beginning to have doubts about buying it but thankfully i came across your review which i thought was very honest.i live in ireland and i know i would not have to rapid charge it to often i agree with you that the interior looks a bit dated but im 63 i have 6 grandkids its time we started to change our greedy ways and try and leave some kind of a future for them
Are you considere the Ioniq? I think it has a similar price in the second hand market. Similar range and considerably more efficient. Quicker CCS 70kw charging.

Ironic that Leaf users are trying to re-engineer slower charging speeds to prevent severe battery overheating / damage.
My only question is would you test a Hyundai Ioniq? And if not, why?
I understand that we need to change our lives and expectations in order to move away from fossil fuels, but....... you ask the question, "would you find it irritating to spend longer than twenty minutes adding 70 miles?". You betcha! This is still the problem isn't it; in an ICE car, plus caravan on the back, a motorway service visit for me is a 5 minute toilet break plus another 5 minutes if refueling is required (it usually isn't because of the range of an ICE car). I just don't believe a full EV is ever going to be able to match this, which is why I think the PHEV is going to be the answer for me. Unfortunately the PHEVs just don't yet have the electric range for everyday use. I also think that PHEVs should use diesel (horror of horrors) because petrol sitting in a tank for too long unused is going to go off.
richard greenwood I think EVs will be able to do what you asked before you think but for now, you’re right. It’s not for you. Keep an eye on what’s coming and hopefully you’ll be able to make the switch one day 👍

How tall are you and how far back was the seat? It looks like you had good legroom. I’m test driving a new Leaf tomorrow and I’m hoping I fit, I’m 6ft8.
cctesta can’t adjust reach, I’m 6”5 and it’s not good. I thought it was ok on a test drive but now I own one and it’s uncomfortable

It's a fine cheap car I guess for people who hardly drive at all, like old fashioned clutter all over the place, and used to very low expectations from everyday vehicles.
It gets you from point a to point b for those who don't really want to drive so if it's all that matters it's perfectly fine.
Googadis Beotches I think it’s a bit better then that but for the price I agree, it should be a little better.
I rather the Old fashioned clutter than the big ugly tablets that manufacturers are throwing on the center console and dashboard which I think looks ugly as hell. The old fashioned clutter will last a whole lot longer than any LCD screen will.
I am not a technology hater. I love most types of technology and own a 13.3" tablet myself but planting tablets on a cars interior is not what I like.
The only reason why this car is cheaper as it has little or no battery management that over the long term will mean the battery will need replacing sooner than other batteries with real battery management systems
they could just change to charge socket on the car to CCS really there is nothing to change a bit of plastic
and as you can see they drop in price quickly since for older ones but that is bad looking the big back end is horrible and the massive headlights that if damage will cost a lot to replace
and for the insurance group is higher than the 16 or 17 for the ioniq
Leafs, not Leaves, surely...
I have had leafs from my first 11 plate 8 years ago to being the very first person in the country to own the 30 KW which when I sold it had done 110'000 miles and lost 2 bars.
With both of my leafs I've had major problems which had to be sent away to one of only 2 garages in the country that can deal with high power part of the vehicle.
The new leaf only has a 38 KW useable battery which will only cover around 140 miles.
I feel the leaf is well over priced now I unfortunately I hate say this but I would never buy another leaf 😞.
I now own a Renualt Zoe which has a 45 KW battery and 41 KW useable energy and boy it's so much better on miles I get easily 180 miles and quite often 195 miles and it's so much cheaper.
I have also just ordered a MG ZS EV which has really good write ups and it's bigger than the leaf charges faster and has liquid cooled batteries and it's much cheaper so why would you buy a second hand leaf 38 KW for more money and a car that has only been face lifted.
I've spoken to a few dealers were their sales have dropped off.
You missed the best part, it only costs £26 345 (after government grants) for the face lifted base model, I can't think of anything cheaper that a family on a budget might consider. Anything but this you say? Well, okay, that might have some truth in it but I say....oh shut up! It's an EV, anyone who drives one farts perfume that only helps restore the ozone. Scientific fact (citation needed😏).

It's funny how Nissan say it's a update and not a recall because if they did recall it they would have admitted there was something wrong with it ...we done 18k miles in my 2.zero after 10 months we really struggled with charging on longer journeys our next car was tekna 40kwh had the update what difference ...good for what they are but have a niro now it's flippin next level truly awesome ev but the leaf was a market leader but somehow are being left behind like i said there are good cars but they could have been awesome plus the way they went about rapidgate is really deceitful I've lost confidence in the brand.

Does any one know how electrically reliably the latest leaf is? I mean internal knob and stuff. The Nissan Qashqai has a bad reputation!

The men need to get some women in their design department?? I work in one and I assure you there are women, actually I would guess that a women was responsible for the bad ergo in the knees area, reason being that when I drive my Leaf I can´t relax my leg too much otherwise it will rub against that hard edge, whereas my wife in spite of obviously having much wider hips has her knees far from that edge when she is in a relaxed driving position. After all the nonsensical men-spreading "problem" has a foundation of truth.
