  • America's "most outstanding" restaurant is an Indian one! So is it authentic? Does it beat India? I flew from Mumbai to find out.
Chai Pani (चाय पानी) in Asheville, North Carolina, won the "America’s Most Outstanding Restaurant" title at the James Beard Foundation Awards. The James Beard awards are considered the Oscars of the food world in the US.
So let's see if Chai Pani lives up to the award. I'm going to analyse the price, quality, taste, and authenticity of Chai Pani's Indian food and tell you whether or not you should visit for yourself.
Queues at Chai Pani start at 10.30am on a Saturday. So arrive early! Find Chai Pani, Asheville, on Google Maps g.page/ChaiPani.
"It really feels like a turning point for how Indian cuisine and culture are perceived in the US as equal as any of the other cuisines that are celebrated like Eurocentric French and Italian American cuisine," Mr Meherwan Irani told The National."
Correction: 02:04 The owner, Meherwan Irani, is from Ahmednagar.

Karl's last comment about how India can change you is so true. I've been lucky enough to have travelled to many parts of the world, and can honestly say that India had the biggest impact on me, in a very positive way. For example, when I first had a masala chai, I couldn't believe how tasty it was, and the complexity in flavours. All the tea I've been drinking all my life in the west has been water with a hint of tea.

Although I haven't tried some of these more authentic dishes you did in the video. One thing I think USA shows us is, authentic isn't really the best tasting overall from my experience. But, the mixture of everything to achieve something new and different. But, I will see when I try the dishes you did, I have never even heard of them and I visited these restaraunts a decent amount. Cheers from Asheville o7

I would rather say, the taste differs from palate to palate and culture to culture. When KFC first launched in India (around 1997 if I'm not wrong), they used to sell their Original Recipe chicken which was "hyped" but didn't land very well amongst the India crowd as a lot of them considered it to be "bland" (maybe not blanket-ly, but just per out palate) leading to KFC launching a "Hot and Crispy" version which was spicy and more tuned to our tastes. Point being, the Original Recipe isn't the best tasting for someone of a different palate, but people of a similar palate (like the British or Aussies perhaps?) will like it as is. I'm pretty sure Mexicans or Viets (who tend to have a lot of spicy food with fresh herbs) will relish these Indian dishes a lot in its authentic self. Namaste from India🙏🏽

Also I get a feeling that Americans don't appreciate Indian American fusion...they are all about authenticity...they crave authentic Indian food...like when they see - say for example a Vada pao made with cheese, - they don't respect that; even though, it exists because they liked it at one point of time...that had its own audience ...maybe the green chutney and chili sauce on the buns were too hot for the Americans to handle...but it's okay that they liked it that way...let's make a parallel- Chinese food came to India and then changed it self so much that chinese don't even recognize their food in India any more...there are only a very few Chinese places in any city in India offering authentic Chinese food these days- the kind of food that every chinese would have at their homes day after day...and it's okay...the Indian chinese food has a huge audience...fried rice for me doesn't mean left over rice...for me it's fresh somewhat dry rice, cooked in a ton of garlic ginger and oils , and then seasoned with a lot more than soy sauce- in fact I like my fried rice so seasoned ( and with so many add ons) that it doesn't even need a side dish...craving authenticity is good...but you can't ignore fusion- that's how great new dishes come about!...American food sucks- but come to India and try fusion American Indian food and you will never want to go back...so yeah...start appreciating fusion food too!

I've got a couple of friends from abroad but almost all are either entirely or partially ignorant of our customs and culture and don't even take the effort to either learn or copy it. But Karl has just surpassed all my non existent expectations of everyone who comes to India.
