    Watched loads of you're videos. No nonsense and easy to follow. The mk1 Focus is such an underrated car but let's just keep it a secret and let them all fester in their German obsession. Hehe

      hahha lol TBH where I am in Birmingham its pretty much German car capital, Fords are around but not as common as they once were!

    Other than obvious bore and stroke the 1.8 vs 2.0 black top difference was extra oil channels for cooling on the 2.0 which then went on to ST170 and RS. It was an old iron block and aluminium head engine and the 1.4/1.6 was an all aluminium Yamaha design. The Fiesta had a great 1.25L version at the time.

      That's new to me thanks for that information! I'm assuming that the blacktop 2.0 pretty much became the Duratec-ST engine (aside from the cosworth tuned head)?

    As far as I figured out, the S stands for "Sigma" and the E for "Evolution".
    The smaller Zetecs with the intake at the front of the block were actually designed by Yamaha, in conjuction with Ford and Mazda. These were called the Sigma engine (Zetec-S) and subsequently the Zetec-SE. These are the 1.25, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.7L engines.
    The 1.8 and 2.0L Zetecs with the intake at the back do not share the Sigma pedigree, as those were evolutions of earlier Ford-designed engines.
    Don't take my word for it though :)

      That could be right you know! I never thought about that at all! It's pretty much for debate what the S and E stand for. I don't think the 1.8/2.0 Zetec was much of a development from earlier engines, it was too radical compared to the CVH and Pinto engines before. The Sigma is very similar and you can see the evolution from the Zetec engine. Still both engines have a ladder-frame crank ladder at the bottom, both DOHC but one is cast iron in the block and one is all-aluminium. The Sigma has powder-coated piston rods which apparently was a novelty at the time and Fords first engine to have a plastic intake manifold (wow lol). Not bad for a half japansese half ford engine design, Ford have not produced an engine as dependable since. The ecoboost is a step forward but not in terms of reliability.

      @@usuallyfixingtinkering Maybe Ford provided the bottom half and Yamaha did the head?
      I think it's a cool fact that it's a semi-jap engine :)

      @@SmeurkeDeKat I think that is very close to the truth, the bottom end uses the same ladder-frame that the Zetec 1.8/2.0 has! So that's Fords area!

      Early 1.8/2.0 Zetec blocks (silvertops) were based on the CVH architecture and did not have the the aluminium lower crankcase girdle, instead having a traditional full depth steel sump. Blacktops introduced the lower girdle, mechanical bucket tappets and had a repositioned water pump. The connecting rods on Sigmas (and ST170's) were not powder coated, instead they were high pressure forged from powdered metal in one piece, bored for the crank journal then fractured along a pre determined fault line to separate the cap from the rod thus ensuring a perfect fit to the crank. One of the first engines to feature this type of rod construction was the S50 3.0 engine fitted to early BMW E36 M3's. @@usuallyfixingtinkering

    Interesting informations. :-))
    In my "blacktop" 1.8 Zetec (from 2002) there was a serious oil leak at the valvecover gasket. Because the bolts were screwed like hell. I've changed the gasket, and after a slow calm rebuild (round1: 2Nm, round2: 8Nm torque on those bolts) no leaking, at all.
    What I don't like in this 1.8 Zetec: the solid tappet style. The shims are worn out a bit (especially on the exhaust side), which means noisy coldstarts. A mechanic said: if I want to change those bloody shims, good luck! Pull off timingbelt, pull off camshafts, measure the old worn shims, get proper size, build in.. tons of work in a workshop for tons of money.

      That I'm afraid is what many have done to try and cure a rocker leak - just tighten it more!! Never works, once they weep its replacement time. Oh I know it's a very specific process to measure the current bucket to work out what shim you need! It's a pain but that's pretty rare unless it's very high mileage. I know a 1.6 owner who last year checked the clearance on what was a 180k engine, oil changed every year- all clearances within perfect tolerance. So if it is out I'd guess its been abused and/or not regularly serviced at some point.

      @@usuallyfixingtinkering Exactly! Just tighten it more: weapon of fools. It needs new gasket sometimes. Preventative maintenance is my hobby.
      200k on this Zetec. I'm not sure about shims, maybe I'm just drawing the long bow. 2 oil changes a year, spring change, autumn change, with the same Valvoline FE 5W30, recommended for Ford engines.

      @@flycorvus I've used a few, I think the oil your using exceeds the specification which is a really good thing! The oil I used is Mannol 5w-30, very well priced for the specification and it's pretty quiet, the tappets do like making some noise on a really cold start but this oil seems to keep them quiet after a few minutes.

      @@usuallyfixingtinkering I believe Ford has a tool to change out the shims without having to remove the camshafts.
      The later versions of the SE's don't even have the shims.. You change the whole bucket..

    Also; don't cheap out on the cam-cover gasket and use a l little dab of silicone in the corners of the camshaft-bridges (or what do you call those?). I've found that one out the hard way.. The last thing you want is oil leaking on your brand new timing belt.
    I've had great results with the Victor-Reinz gaskets.

      That is one thing I didn't mention which is important, always a small blob in each corner - that is the only acceptable use of silicone in this job! Ah that is great information I'll remember that if mine starts leaking again!

    Hi have a Fiesta 2007 "FYJA" 1.6L and I'm told it's what is known as a Zetec-SE. However the airbox/cover says "Duratec." What valve covers can I swap onto this engine I have? I am asking because I want to find/use a cover that uses the 4 'Coil on Plug' coilpacks... I've seen them on Focus models.....

      neither really, because only the appearance is different on a mk1 focus nothing else

    1.4 and 1.6 like to use a bit of oil so check level regular

      they can but usually it's a block pcv valve causing excessive crankcase pressure

    blacktop camcover isnt plastic , its made from metal and its coated in black . Mine is peeled off so its half silvertop half blacktop

      The blacktop cam cover is plastic 100% Sounds like someone has painted your Silvertop metal cam cover black and it's coming off.
