I'm lucky I've checked my cambelt and got a friend who's a retired mechanic it's all ready be done it's nearly brand after me ordering everything to do it but it's there when I need to do it but I do have a rumble when its cold ? I've sprayed everything with wd40 but it was stood for a while before bought it but it's only done 29000 and service stamp at 28000 I've found a bonnet lock with key second hand but a good one from a ford second parts seller from eBay £40 I've used them before when I had a alloy from them for a spare
Not all plastic is the same. The same goes for metal. I wouldn't worry about the plastic impeller if it's a genuine or OE pump (I think Pierburg is the company that makes them for Ford).
Excellent video Buddy
Great. Many thanks. Interesting seeing job done even though mine was done at my local garage 2 years ago.
My cam ends have been shattered too mate gonna have to replace them one day
Just swap the cams for 2nd hand ones when the timing belt is next done, it wouldn't be much more work :)
Is cambiare an Italian sensor?
I believe so.
nice one matey i may use this guide on the mrs mk1. im shocked by the plastic impeller but if it is the original and has survived 150k and looked good its a proof its not so bad.
Ford ones will always be better than VW put it that way, but still a surprise to myself
I changed mine at 117 000 its 1.6 04 model it had a plastic impeller (original) guess what local ford sold me same bloody one plastic grrr i just thought it was ment to be fed up now.
I suspect the ones that sell are plastic ones now, I have a feeling early examples had metal ones and later ones didn't, something else I've learnt!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Andy i was trying to find out if the 1.6 16v has hydrolic tappets but ive had conflicting answers i always thought they was but ford dealer said they had solid ones but local car shops saying hydrolic im lost. i wanted to replace but if they are solid then its probly got shims for tappets.
Excellent thank you, this is my next big job after I finish up with the rust, which is going nicely. By your advice, it is abit overdue but just about due according to the old advice. Mine is already on it’s second belt. Annoyingly already had to do the water pump. Can confirm the OEM part I received and old one I took out has plastic impellers. I noticed my rocker cover gasket is starting to leak so I am aiming to hit a few birds when I plan to do it within the next couple months.
No problem, it will be on it's second belt. It wouldn't exist otherwise as an engine or car tbh!
been waiting for this
No problem, there will be more to come as I will eventually do one on a 1.8/2.0 Zetec when I get the chance. Similar but different.
Fun fact: I did my 100000km (60k miles) main belt on tddi in two and a bit years! lol To be honest, I think you can do 150000km belt on diesels, because there is less load because it is going from pump to cam only
Just a correction just for clarity that I didn't make in the edit, Zetec engines have water pumps that are driven as usual by the auxiliary belt and not by the timing belt just like a Sigma.
Cool vid🎉
cheers
@@usuallyfixingtinkering valve stem seals and piston rings and head gasket would be also veryhelpfull
@@shhssnsjs1910 I don't need to. Sigma engines do not have issues in this department and if they do - the engine has been severely neglected and my advice is a new engine! Seriously, these engines are so good you don't need to look at these items. Valve stem seals like any engine will eventually give way, but I've yet to find one that has been diagnosed with stem seal failure.
Andy ive got to change thermostat, if bolts come out intact i want to put in new bolts but cant find them. as ive never seen them im not sure the size ect i know its 8mm thats all have you any idea of part number or were to get them?? if they snap im able to drill out and retap myself but hope they come out lol.
8mm head but unsure of the thread size, possibly M6! but would have to measure how long they are. Hopefully you wont have to if you go easy take your time! Backwards and forwards motion on the bolt when it starts moving (hopefully)
Need code please
you can get the serial number on the back of the radio and type it into plenty of code reader websites for free
Where can one obtain both plastic roof strips for the rain gutters, 04 ZX5' as mine are sun beating and curling up w/ rust and future water leakage. T.I.A😊
Ah damn thats unlucky as they a rarely curve, 2nd hand is the best bet but you need strong tape and glue to hold them down, cleaninless is the key to make sure the surface is free from old tape!
Where can I find a bonnet lock as mine when you put the key is it's all loose the latch is perfectly fine can't find one for a MK1 I bet it's a scrap yard job if I can get one need your advice
You guessed right sadly, sounds like the lock has been butchered and will need to come with a key for it,
currently on sale for £237 (with the end of month 10% extra)
they do come down in price more often than not!
Awesome vid to explain the art of using a manual choke - actually prefer them! Give my bike full choke & no throttle & it fires up first or second kick. Unfortunately its a spring loaded all or nothing choke so leave it to warm up on full choke & get my gear on then when its just about to flood after a few mins, give it a few blips of the throttle to clear it and raise the revs as its knock off choke and settles. Just wish it had a nice lever to back it off gradually like your car 🤩
I'm glad you enjoyed this video, I enjoyed making it. So easy when you know how! That sounds like a very specific technique to perform a cold start!
I saw your arrivals video but how on earth did i miss this video? Thank you for your kind words about my blue Rover 25. You sure know your stuff as he is indeed an Impression S! 👏
Gosh this was a lovely day!!
Hi I did a flush few weeks ago then added new oat coolant I had kept it running to get the air pockets preferably out of the system as I have no bleed valve so did it through the header tank. Left in idle for 15 minutes with heaters on felt the hot air with in seconds then gave it a rev on and off for a few minutes. The coolant had stayed at the same level more or less so top it up after few hours. Checker it every other day to make sure no sudden loss of level then after say a week it drop massive after driving then noticed a leak coming from the bottom bolt of the pump. Is this due to probably still got air in the system or will it be the seal as no issues appeared at the beginning or during the 1 St few days. Any intel or suggestions are welcome.
Either the pump has failed or the paper gasket isn't sealing well, sometimes they need some hylomar or silicon gasket maker to help seal them. Either way the pump has to be removed, if it looks like its leaking from the gasket then just order a new one and it should be fine.
@@usuallyfixingtinkering thank you for the information
I had a leak, unbaknowanced to me, water filled up spare tire well about 1 inch and spare tire jack rusted through metal body( jack, foot/pad useless) and corroded the wing nut bolt that secures spare tire. 😢
Your joining a list of people with the same issue, its a pain but with persuasion is may decide to release from its thread, a second hand one will be easy to obtain.
Yes, got lucky to loosen from thread. Now got holes in tub i drilled out in perfect circles, now got 1 inch drain holes, prepped and protected. No longer keep jack in its supposed spot to rot away again.😊
It's great that someone still makes movies with 1.6 because UA-cam is full of 2.8 in e30 . Good job waiting for more videos with e30 😃
@@biedak1021 I'm hoping to revisit this car soon time pending as its not a local car to me. Myself and David the owner are very much of that thought towards this car - it's not a 2.8 which has been done to death.
I would say the "World Car" that the Ford Focus was back in the day, did a very good job. The Engineers across all countries agreed. It was the shitty politicians who had to insert themselves that made the USA ZX3 an abomination vs a super cheap car to get to work.
Sorry, this is ultra levels of OCD.
@@Drew-Dastardly It's old school attention to detail. A technique which nobody under a certain age has heard of. I found it interesting to share as I do this with all spark plug changes.
Andrew with the never ending battle to hold back rust do you recommend any particular product I have used both waxoyl and Dinitrol 1000 and Dinitrol hs 3125 my galaxy did pass its mot but I noticed some corrosion that could do with treating
@@nicholaswilliams4532 3125 is my recommendation for cavities like sills but the rust will need treating beforehand then Dynax UC is my no1 choice to cover the underside and arches.
✌✌✌
It is sad the mk1.5 didn’t get the st as a hatch but if you look at our Honda civics people have loved the hatch and sedans. I’ve learned to really appreciate the body lines on the sedan. I will say rust became bad and the paint quality was terrible and never held up like the mk1 here in America. Paint would start chipping within just a few years or less
That is very true with honda civics. I'm not surprised that the sedan was a choice but you must have the hatch to complement it!
@@usuallyfixingtinkering yeah definitely, some people here take the bumpers from the mk1.5 st and put them on the hatches and it looks really good. I’m glad you made this video though it was nice to hear you talk about the American models because I got confused as well doing research. I’d mostly just find information from European models. So from both places it’s it’s nice to talk to each other about it to get a better understanding😂👍
I’m in America, research has been very tough because most of what I find is European information. I have a mk1.5 (the face lift 05-07) then there’s the mk2 from 08-11. For a while I thought I had a mk2 till I found out since its facelift of mk1 it’s mk1.5😂
Personally I prefer the facelift though I do wish we had the European mk2 rather than getting 1.5. Our mk2 ended up being completely different than the Euro model and it unfortunately was pretty ugly
it looks extremely... disjointed. A MK2 front end on the remaining mk1 body, you either have to screw at what they were thinking or appreciate the redesign to accommodate this without looking like a bolt-on-shed-job!
Love my ZX3 in twilight blue, I think it’s one of the best “hot hatch” designs of the era for sure. Timeless even. Mine still running strong nearly 25 years later. With some subtle visual mods she’s a real looker now. Too bad no power to back it up (yet)
Twilight blue is a really vibrant colour!
I like everything about this, Andrew.
Very much appreciate the coverage of our North American market offerings.
I appreciate your message and it was inevitable out of interest, I have learnt many things :)
Funny you mention that our facelift cars are not as comely as the Mk1. Over here, its pretty much a 50 50 split as to which is prefered. Many of us with this year of car 2005 to 2007 convert ours over to the rare Street Appearance Package bumpers and diffuser with hatch wing and the SVT side skirts. My own car has had this treatment.
that's very interesting I'd have thought the pre-2005 facelift would be so much more popular
@@usuallyfixingtinkeringI think people prefer mk1 over the mk1.5 facelift if it’s an svt. People don’t really go for the facelift often from what I’ve seen unless it’s the st sedan which believe it or not is harder to find than the svt. The mk1.5 hatch I see more as well but still as far as modifying them it’s usually more popular to have the mk1 svt here in America👍
You have done well. You have obviously done your research. I would disagree with a few things and you missed some special edition packages, but you are on point for most everything.
Naturally there was a few things that may have been overlooked as information isn't exactly forthcoming :)
I'd like to contact you. I have some things for you that may be of interest. I'm, i guess one could say, pretty knowledgabke of these cars over here. I'll answer any questions, if I can, that you may have.
please message me!
Split port engine is a bad one lots of problems valve seats drop out is one the zetec engine is different to ours also if a cambelt goes on a us spec zetec the valves dont hit the pistons as there pistons have cut outs and ours dont maybe because of there fuels lower compression maybe
Yes, most of them Over here are long crushed by now.
Yep not the best of engines in that capacity, as a 1.4 or 1.6 yes but a 1.8 or 2.0 nope!
Another very interesting and well written video 👍. Speaking of CVH lumps, have you heard of the elusive 16v CVH? It would have been interesting if Ford would have actually given a 16v version a go 🤔.
The zetec was developed from the cvh and I saw in the early days a zetec head was put on a cvh bottom end we did it the way round here using the cvh head and zetec bottom.end ( zvh )
I have heard of this before, the blocks are very similar!
Hello friend from Russia! You may not know, but in Russia, in 2001, a factory for the assembly of foreign-made cars was built for the first time. And it was our favorite Ford Focus 1! He had some interesting differences for the winter climate. As well as Russian-made parts! For example, an electric wiper motor. Personally, I have 2 FF1. 5 door saloon (we call it Sedan) GHIA, Zetec 1.8. And 5 door hatchback Rocam 1.6 with air conditioning (we call it an empty drum)) The car is slowly but surely gaining cult status. many Peoples who love this beautiful car If you are interested, you can write me on email for tell about FF1)!

Seeing the bumpers of the North American hatch 😮😱. Looks really weird though interesting leaning aboy the differences. I've seen the facelift North American mk1 in pictures before. They still look odd with the mk3 mondeo front end from a European perspective. Not arguing thoughvas Americans are used to them and fair enough.
many of us mk1.5 guys over here convert ours to the street appearance package bumpers with rear diffusers.
@@thedogbarber OK fair. I'm not knowledgeable on the North American Spec I'll admit. They're still mk1 Focuses so I still like them but as from a British/European perspective, just not used to how the US specs look.
@@adamjow8405 we feel the same way. Lol
@@thedogbarber Fair enough. Yeah I understand 🤣🤣🤣
@@adamjow8405 There are a handful of owners who do the Mk1 front conversion. Its not difficult at all.
you know im one of these people who converted their euro focus lights for american i just need the bumpers to complete the look
I, and american, converted mine to your euro tails.
I did the same years ago!
@usuallyfixingtinkering they look good though will admit
I agree!
The svt was an interesting one. St 170 was tuned by cosworth but the svt had the same power but used a turbo.
Svt had no turbo
@@dazlad1972 Many do add a turbo or supercharger however.
Nope. The Euro Focus RS 2 litre had a turbo (220bhp?) and a limited slip differential. The early ST (and US SVT) had around 170bhp purely from variable cam/valve timing. No forced induction involved. No LSD either.
euros got the better body styles for the base models imo, better taillights and headlights with real turn signals.
The turn signals look more integrated in the wing than on the bumper.
My ZXW street edition is still going strong 24 years later. The street edition spoiler makes the wagon a bit less brick shaped haha
That is lovely news!! Yes I agree on that spoiler!
Yenks have some funny expressions. :-) Tudor, and Fordor.. Small engine in the US means 2.0L, at least.
I had 1.0 and 1.1 cars, then I got a good job and money and a 2.0 was a massive upgrade back in 2001. It is hilarious the Americans have all gone to 7.6 litre pickup truck engines because of their own insane CAFE emissions standards. Talk about politicians bringing stupid laws in that have done the absolute opposite of the so called environmental reason. America could easily have 1.6 cars but the marketing is wrong and they are small and nippy.
What is the solution for preignition in this model?
What's happen8ng to make you think that?
Glad that the engine was removed, which means another focus have been saved😊
Great point!
Hi, my car is not moving in forward or reverse, just no motions at all, the cable from transmission is connected with the shifter and the dash shows whichever gear I select, but no movement at all. Fluid level is full and is red in colour any idea what could be the issue? Any guidance will be much appreciated. No error codes whatsoever. Also, when car is put in Park "P" it moved freely if you push it by hand, so my guess is the selector on the inside might be broken?
That is a confusing one, it sounds like the park pawl has broken as the transmission should lock in park. Any funny noises from the gearbox?
@@usuallyfixingtinkering Thanks for your kind reply, when its put in park, it makes a grinding noise, but other than noise no locking occurs, car just rolls freely in any gear
Car does not move if Drive or Reverse is selected so I am guessing either the fluid pressure solenoid or the shift selector shaft could be gone, can I test solenoids with normal 12v DC?
I used to work on cars and did welding for people but it's always can you do it cheap and people told people just got to much yes its people are lazy or have not got a clue i got sick of the hassle i work on my own car and not at garage as its expensive and the got the tools i do help friends as a favour as it works both ways but i will say you know your cars well and do a good job 👍 im starting a full engine service on my focus just waiting for my parts but im not like you where every thing has to be original and perfect but im using good quality brands as it will be my daily car and be looked after but won't be a show car but a tidy one and reliable as its very low mileage
