One of my favourite songs is "Torna à Surriente" and - in my opinion - of all the many tenors who sang this masterpiece Giuseppe Di Stefano's interpretation is the best by far. His voice is incredible. And I agree with +Lawrence Sosna. Of course we can't know what Caruso's voice really sounded like. The recording technique back in his days was primitive but after comparing "Core 'ngrato" many times I still think that Di Stefano's voice is better than Caruso's.

I have heard singers that were widely known who I found scratching my head wondering how they got so widely known. I never hear this powerful tenor before. I regard him as good as any famous tenor that I have heard. I am glad I stumbled upon him on UA-cam. It shows how limited my scope of great music has been.
He's always been my favorite. In the late 50th he reworked his technique somewhat damaged for singing very much open throated and with passion to spare. He owned Tosca's Caravadossi role and Lucia di Lammermoor's Edgardo for many years. He even sang - like nobody else before or after him - La Forza del Destino's Don Alvaro (whose tessitura requires a heavier tenor voice). Just listen to a live performance with young Tebaldi and Bastianini. Magda Olivero said he had a technique of his own, a technique that allowed him to sing piano with exquisite diminuendos and portamentos. He belonged to a extinct breed along with many other opera stars during the second half on the 20th century.
