about 30 years ago saw Milt Jackson at Yoshi's in Oakland... had table in the front row. Could even see the rings on his hands as he played - and he played absolutely perfectly - sweet, smooth, intoxicating. My favorite concert of all time....
I had classical snob friends who would look down on Jazz except for the MJQ. MJQ seemed to be okay with them because it was almost like classical music. Ugh! Despite them, I continued to listen to MJQ because there was a lot of there there. TY for the post.
The first part of John Lewis is so sensitive and beautiful. It always surprise me the way that he embroidered the high notes and how he is rhythmically balancing the off beat phrases. Pure Genius !!!
The vibes solo in this song is incredible, maybe the best I've ever heard, Milt Jackson is an artist, thanks for posting, best version I've seen on youtube yet
Wonderful. I first heard them in the 90s on the radio and was taken back. I grew up in the 50s listening to Mom & Dad's Big Band Swing 78s and it hooked me on this genre. Does anyone know if Henry Mancini was influenced by MJQ for his Peter Gunn music?
Well for the record, the first version by a fantastic great pianist Gene Harris & renowned bassist Ray Brown, the number as old as jazz music, more like a national anthem related famous artistes worldwide. This particular version by a group of fine jazz band by a name Modern Jazz Quartet. Happy listening.
++Eddie Welch I know that the MJQ's music, and especially John Lewis' piano-playing, might be described as cerebral, but that really doesna explain how the hell chess got into a cluster of memories that include sex and champagne!
Went to hear them in St Andrews hall in Glasgow-long time ago and got an invite to them after the concert- a highlight of my live
Like Fontessa, another gem from the MJQ- God bless them !!!
Wow...these. guys. REALLY. JAM....!!...PEOPLE with. Class......love. good. Jazz...ha....!!!!!

This is one of the first albums I ever heard as a kid! My parents raised me right!
Congratulations, Alex!
You grown up with good care from thinking parents. Applauses.
They certainly did…

Согласна с Вами полностью! Чистый Гений! Чувствует ритм и так тонко балансирует на волнах Музы, открывая для нас новый мир красок!
Literally just saw them perform this on tv...it was old but the second I heard the first note I had to stop and listen....mesmerized is what I was...

This doesn't sound like the last concert version, is it an alternate track?

@@gynack you can add chess to anything, it's like salt you know. A little Capablanca or Karpov goes perfectly well with a little fellatio! = )

I never realised how versatile a game it could be. I should have played it a lot more often and with a lot more ingenuity!
Jammer dat deze fantastische musici gestopt zijn.
