This is SO COOL!!!! Hi I'm new to the dice making community. I've never done it before. I've always liked dice though and I always enjoy playing dice games. I found your videos a while ago, probably around a year or two ago and I just now recently subscribed. That's because your videos make me want to try making a set of dice to call my own now. Your videos are extremely helpful! I can't wait to see what I can do and I can't wait to see what other cool things you show next, your content is very entertaining! Thank you.
Awesome tutorial. The molds look fantastic, I've always been hesitant to start making my own dice because of the detail in the numbers and the flash left over from the seams causing some bad balance, but these look sharp as hell. I wouldn't advise using nail polish for crafts though, as it's not made of archival quality materials. It'll very likely yellow and there's a good chance it will chip or crumble as they age. There's products around for sealing resin in the same vein, or you could even mix up a small batch of resin to patch once you've made a few dice that need shining. Resins and products made for resins (specifically of the spray variety) will have a better shot at self-leveling as well, so you won't have those brush marks left over on your pretty dice from the small nail polish wands.
Thank you! I'm very happy with how they have turned out. I am experimenting with an even better method for removing the dice and adding the resin to the molds now. I thought about that, and was worried about the yellowing myself, but I figured since I use such a tiny amount, you probably wouldn't even see the yellowing, since it's typically just to cover up small scratched left with sandpaper. A quick wipe with a paper towel helps with any of the brush marks as well. But by in large, you are totally right, resin polishers or fillers are absolutely the real way to go. This is just my simple and cheap alternative, since the polish only cost me a dollar haha. But for a primo-product, your idea/method is the way to go. :)
Heres a great effect brought out by accident. While my daughter was in visiting we made a few sets of dice and a set of molds. On set of dice turned out really well, We tried to make a two tone glow in the dark set that was green and purple. The color worked out well and when we put them in the dark, we got the same marbled effect. We figured out that we did not use the same amount of flourescent pigment in the 2 color batches. So each color had a different glow effect.
Would you consider doing another glow in the dark set but as like “swirls” through a clear dice set like your smoky dice? Maybe even mixing some smoky colours in the dice with it? I’d love to see that!
Really like the look but it was triggering something on my subconscious. I realized/ remembered my very first set of dice, (Basic D&D, way back then around mid to late 70s) had a yellow d20 with black numbers. Looked just like these but obviously didn’t glow. Rybinator, you hit my nostalgia bone...
I bought a set of glow in the dark dice with black numbering. I decided to repaint the numbering gold and jade stones with golden elvish inscription. The glow in the dark effect adds to the magical appearance of them.
Awesome! I've tried this just last week, but most of my glow in the dark powder sank to the bottom (to the point where you can see a defined layer lying on the bottom) so they are super unbalanced :( any tips? :D
Whoops, totally thought I hit reply to this already, let me write it out again - So this could be happening due to a number of factors - The pigment you are using isn't fine enough, the resin has too long of a cure time, not mixed well enough. So let's try a few things to fix your issues. You may already be doing some of these things, in which case, disregard them. First, mixing time. Not only mix your resin for a LONG time (Unless the working time is like 7 minutes or something.) You should mix until your arm is sore. Most problems stem from undermixing. Second, the pigment. If your pigment is in large grains, almost like sand, they may sink to the bottom. You can see the pigment that I use is almost like cocoa powder, its really fine. This helps it stay in the resin more easily. You might just have to try a different pigment unfortunately. Or, it could be fixed with the third step. Your working time. If you have a resin with a nearly 6 hour working time (that is, time that you can mess around with it before it begins curing), then that is 6 hours of time for the pigment to fall to the bottom. The resin I work with has a 40 minute working time, and I usually mess around with mixing, adding pigments, getting my molds set up for nearly 15 minutes, so it will already start to cure a tiny bit. This helps prevent things from falling down to the bottom of the mold. You can always wait to closer to the end of your working time to put the pigments in. (If you have a 45 minute working time, mix it in at 20-30 minutes. etc.) This would be my last thing I would try if I still had issues, because if your resin does start to cure, you will probably introduce a ton of bubbles into the casting. Hopefully some of these help you out. 95% of the time it will be either the first or second thing. Let me know how your project goes! I'd love to hear about it. :)
@@Rybonator Thanks for the Reply! I usually mix my resin for longer than "necessary". The bottle says to do it for 3-4 minutes, I usually go for a full 7 or 8 so I think that should be alright. The pigment is definitely fine enough, it is exactly as you describe it, pretty much like cocoa powder. The resing I use has 30-60 minutes working time and then it should be "dust dry" after 6-12 hours. It says you can work with it after 12-18 hours and that it fully cures within 3-5 days. Ive definitely found that the resin is still syrupy after a few hours, and after 12ish hours it is almost gummy worm like (it is still bendable, and fingerprints stay, but it is no longer sticky). Does that sound like it is too long, or should that be good? I definitely think the problem lies with the pigment sinking after mixing it, it very clearly falls to the bottom of the mould, and it is super uniform when I mix it in. If the resin I use is fine, do you think it could have something to do with the amount I put in? Maybe I put too much in so it can not all stay dissolved? (like putting too much salt in water, which leaves a little heap of salt on the bottom) I am going to make a new set tomorrow, and mix a little bit more powder in with every die to see if that makes any difference. If that's not it I will try to mix it in at a later time, I'm not really sure what else it could be. Im curious to know what you think, and I will let you know how the next few come out! P.s. your tips for making the molds was amazing, glueing the dice together works like an absolute charm!
@@thesylren Hmm, based on what you are saying, I wonder if your resin is not a casting resin? This could maybe cause issues if you are pouring in small amounts (like dice) if it is not a casting resin. The super long cute time of 3-5 days leads me to believe that. But I can't say for certain. I'd experiment with different pigment amounts like you mentioned, that seems to be your best bet. Let me know how it all turns out, and I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful. Glad you like the tip! I love seeing when something works out for others that I did :)
@@Rybonator no it's definitely a casting resin! The dice are definitely completely usable after 24 hours as well, they are just a bit more prone to scratches and dents untill the 3-5 days are over. But if all else feels ill definitely try another resin! And no worries man, you've been most helpful so far! I'll let you know how it turns out :)
NAIL POLISH - BRILLIANT! Also, what is your opinion on using extra fine glitter for molds? I don't mean the generic craft shop stuff i mean fine powder glitter, I have a suspicion that's how Chessex gets their borealis dice (and how DieHard got their moonstone) but I can't even get my basic dice to come out correctly so I am not ready to try just yet. That might be a cool topic to explore. Keep up the good content my dude
Thanks I appreciate that! I'll work to keep making content if people keep watching. :) I actually just bought some extremely fine powdered glitter- holographic nail polish powder in fact. I will be trying it out soon, and if it works I'll show a video on the process. I think it will, but I just don't have a lot of it, that stuff is expensive. So I've only got 1 or two shots at it. Here's to hoping it works out!
@@Rybonator I think it will look pretty good in the end. Also, I just saw your DieHard review and you said you saw them off of Reddit posts, were there any pictures that stuck out particularly well to you or was it a whole bunch? I only ask because I have seen your Reddit posts and I had some glamour shots over there and it would be pretty cool if it were my pictures that inspired you after you inspired me to start making dice.
Hey Rybonator, RawGage here. I’d love to see you create a set of Inception Dice! Take a mini set of dice and put them inside a regular sized set... and then put those dice inside a set of large dice! Make sure to dye from darkest to lightest with brightest to darkest numbers so you can see them and paint the numbers on each set before sinking them in. I think that’d be an amazing set. I’ll let you figure out the details of how to pull this off and you’re welcome for the idea ;]
This has actually been suggested quite a lot haha :) I do plan on tackling the dice within a dice idea, just have some others I plan on getting out first. But have no fear! It will come :)
How many times do you reuse your mold? I found that the silicon I purchased was just about enough for a whole set of molds and im worried it will start getting expensive if they dont last long lol
So the best way to go about that would be to mix up two separate batches at the same time. So like I did here with the green, but with 2 separate colors mixed in with two separate bunches of resin. You could either then pour them into one bottle together at the same time without mixing them, which will give it a cursory mix, but nothing too substantial, or you can pour a small amount of one, then a small amount of then other, going back and forth. I am planning on making a video on the subject soon, so be on the lookout :)
I think it would come out as two separate colors being mixed, rather than 1 homogeneous color mixture, as the powder isn't as fine as it would need to be for that.
Depends on the quality of the inevitable LARP costumes. If you can tell they were made in their mothers' basements, that's a crit fail. If it was you hosting, I think you'd get a good 15-20 party going, especially if you gave out these dice as party favors! That would be an automatic +3 to your "perform" check, no question
Great videos. I would recommend not gluing the dice at the edges. Edges are one of the most important things for a fair dice, even if you cut carefully and sand, it will be uneven. Try gluing always at the face and see how it goes?
Gluing on the face presents it's own challenges. If you don't have a very top/tip point, then air is very likely to get trapped inside, and if you have a face at the tip, then there will be parts that are of equal height and trap air. So you have a pretty good chance of having your dice fail on you in the casting phase. As well, cleanup on a face would mean you would have to be careful about not ruining the number on the face. All in all it's safer to use a corner, which is why it's standard process for this kind of making. BUT that is all just personal preference, you are free to do as you like :)
@@Rybonator Yeah it's super easy and just a paper towel to rub off the excess. There are billion colors to pick from and crayons are mad cheap. No paint brush etc. Its good to refresh dice that have gotten dirt down into the numbers, especially when they are white inked.
So the powder says "Up to 10 hours!" but that depends on how long you charge them up. I have charged them for 30 minutes and have seen the glow last for about an hour ish in the dark, though extremely faded at the end. :)
Did you ever figure out how to fully harden your dice and not bake them so that they aren’t sticky? I can’t seem to find a way to prevent the sticky issue and have to heat them to fully harden
Using this mold material, my dice have yet to come out sticky or tacky any more, so I don't have to worry about that much. You have a few options. Throw them in an oven at maybe 200-225 taking them out every 10 minutes u til they aren't tacky. (Smells a lot.) Or you could sand the tackiness off, or just wait. After about 2 weeks the tackiness faded from most of the old dice I used to make anyway. Best of luck! :)

I actually just bought some extremely fine powdered glitter- holographic nail polish powder in fact.
I only ask because I have seen your Reddit posts and I had some glamour shots over there and it would be pretty cool if it were my pictures that inspired you after you inspired me to start making dice.
wonder how to get like a semi cracked look without the actual cracks? or lightning style so to speak
It'd be pretty cool to throw some radium powder in resin. I'm not too sure how to keep it from mixing with the outer layer though
Way to go mate.
I appreciate that :)
I think dark purple or indigo would have fit these dice very well but black looks quite nice too.
That would have been great for an even more nuclear theme :)
Maybe I missed it but where do you get the glow in the dark powder?
I got mine on amazon :) I put an affiliate link up in the description.
@@Rybonator thank you so much!! You have inspired me to get into dice making!! Im so excited!!
That's awesome! Best of luck to you :)
If you eat them I hear you become a superhero

Simplynailogical?? 💿💿💿
can i put just a lityle purple paint in the mixture to make it glow purple, for my tiefling necromancer.
thx,your videos are awesome,bye.
I don't think so, as the paint would obscure the powder. BUT there are purple glow pigments the same as this green one :)
I could sleep to your voice dude, so damn sothering ^_^
Haha thanks my guy :) It's all them damn ASMR vids I used to fall asleep to...

Ahem, The medieval music in the background rocks.
Hey the OST of Hyrule would know :)
These are the dice you want in a CyberPunk game.
Oh hell yeah! :)
How many times do you reuse your mold? I found that the silicon I purchased was just about enough for a whole set of molds and im worried it will start getting expensive if they dont last long lol
They last for about 100 uses or so. (From what I have heard.) I haven't reached that limit yet though!
@@Rybonator oh wow thats a lot more than i thought. Thanks for the reply and your amazing videos!!
For measurement why not use red solo shot glasses? Each ridge is a different measirement
You totally can, I have upgraded to some measuring cups with measurements on the side :)
Could I mix in the glow in the dark material with normal resin to get like a glow in the dark swirl
Absolutely! :)
Rybonator I am Excited
How about multicolored dice? If i want blue dice with red streaks or something?
So the best way to go about that would be to mix up two separate batches at the same time. So like I did here with the green, but with 2 separate colors mixed in with two separate bunches of resin. You could either then pour them into one bottle together at the same time without mixing them, which will give it a cursory mix, but nothing too substantial, or you can pour a small amount of one, then a small amount of then other, going back and forth. I am planning on making a video on the subject soon, so be on the lookout :)
Are you able to mix the glow in the dark powders to get certain colors that someone might want to see?
I think it would come out as two separate colors being mixed, rather than 1 homogeneous color mixture, as the powder isn't as fine as it would need to be for that.
Rybonator well if you can it be really cool because I want to see if someone nice emerald/sour apple green glow.
Do they glow in the dark for 10 hours only or do they last a good while?
Great video mr Rybonator!
Thank you Zly! I appreciate that.
Do you have a link for were I can find the nail polish you used?
I’m going to do this again 🤦🏾♂️I keep getting bobbles in my mode😁🤦🏾♂️
Reveal tiles in X radius when thrown
Would glow in the dark face paint work?
And, edit: I now sorta know how to make a reusable mold for a 3D item. I'm gonna use that a lot.
Nice!
Thanks! Glad you like them.
Awesome
No u :P
I wanna go to a D&D rave party!
That sounds like either a critical success or a critical failure of a party idea haha
@@Rybonator Ha, makes sense. Thanks for the heads up!
I bet uv resin would work, too!
8 just see this videos for fun but now NOW I want to make those but I am poor I cant even aford to make at least the mold
Back in the day some dice would come without the numbers filled in and we'd use a crayon to fill the numbers in.
I have actually heard that crayon is a great number/inking tool. I'll have to give it a shot and see the results sometime :)
ChaswellQuint I still use my baby blue dice that came with my DnD red box and I still have the crayon I used to fill the numbers in.
@@Rybonator Yeah it's super easy and just a paper towel to rub off the excess. There are billion colors to pick from and crayons are mad cheap. No paint brush etc. Its good to refresh dice that have gotten dirt down into the numbers, especially when they are white inked.
how long does the glow actually lasts?
How much for them?
I don't sell any right now, but maybe in the future! Sorry :)
I love you

Can you make a video on how to make multicolored dice? I recently followed your shotgun tutorial to make my own molds so like, I'm curious as to how to get the tie dye effect or swirl that some ppl get
Working on it! :) Look for it in the future.
Can you make crystal clear dice with colored or an item in the middle of them
