Seeing some comments about me advocating “scalping”. Scalping would be going to Best Buy and buying all of their Steelbook stock on day one and then selling for 20 times the cost. What I am saying is, that if you have a movie that has a market value that is very high, you may want to consider selling it to fund other aspects of your collection. If you can get $50 for a single Blu-ray from someone and you’re okay with selling, then sell it to that person who wants it that badly and buy more movies with your $50. It’s not like I have 50 copies of Dead Alive sitting around that I’m selling for $100 each. I had one copy, and sold it for a fair price considering the market value, and now I’ve lost that movie from my collection so I can buy others. Collectors should always be looking to find ways to offset their costs and grow their collection without breaking the bank. This is one way to do it. In no way should you go to Best Buy and buy all their limited editions to resell. That is terrible and I’m not advocating for that.
You are correct. You didn't say that. But I look at it this way: even if you had, what you do with your money and your movies is YOUR CHOICE! Too many internet trolls basically get cranky and wine about everything today! Even if you had multiple copies. You spend that money and paid for it yourself with hard work! People have been buying and selling trading cards for a century plus and no one complains! Or how about books! Or old desirable records! The trolls need to get themselves a hobby! 💯
Andy Little so you have never bought something and resold it for a profit. Either as a collector. Or because you got a good deal? I highly doubt that. I don’t want to turn the comment section ugly on a video that isn’t mine. But Jeff, me or frankly, even you have the right to purchase and sell an item at a profit, loss, break it, smash it, do whatever we want with it. It is truly that simple.
Films At Home “Scalping” ? Lmao......hello....mic fucking fly .....it’s just good ol Capitalism he was talking about. Free enterprise! Nobody has to buy his movies, nobody has to sell them to him, stores don’t have to stock them, etc etc. Scalping...if one goes to Best Buy and or goes online and buys up all the 4K Zardov, then sells them at 7 times the cost...THATS scalping! And that’s BS! Like the mother fuckers in Seattle in 99’ buying up all the Metallica seats, then sells for double....BS TARGET store- just sold their online exclusive- GI JOE CLASSIFIED toys, transformers SS #68, and a couple Star Wars black series- all sold out in first 7 seconds! Huh?! It takes longer then that for the screen to load on app/website, push icons over to Cart sms checkout; even if u have everything ready to go! They use Bot software . They detect the second the store SKU goes up then it does its micro magic processing, goes to dozens of pre paid gift cards for quicker checkout, and they can route addresses back to the scalpers one address- so they can skate past the “ two only “ rules. THIS is scalping! I’m tired of getting “scalped”. ( I can use the native term , cuz I’m native Siberian....tho they didn’t have scalping in our culture. But w/e, we did fight the fn commies during and after the Russian revolution, long after the Tsar’s white army was destroyed. Most reds couldn’t last fighting in Siberia, even tho outnumbered... but then the reds that fought westward finally returned east and waited till summer to flush out the Yakut). I digress....lol. Drunk, not sorry. I really like your channel, I just subbed… I have thousands of movies ranging from never before released VHS that never even made it straight to video that we’re just not for sale copies they went to video stores and producers and movie companies I never saw the light of day laser disk the entire HD DVD collection Blu-ray and now 4K… Although most of my numbers are in regular DVD, and a bunch of those send case two for a dollar dollar store DVDs old kung fu flicks in black-and-white and silent movies. It seems you are a treasure trove of movie info though, which is very interesting profitable and fun. Kudos ....look forward to live streams and Q&A. Throw some superchat ur way.

Scalpers are not the scum you imply they are. Whoever buys from them only did so because they weren't able or determined to snag it in time at initial release. Nothing wrong with people who made the effort to get the product to make a profit off of it.
But lets keep this convo going. How do you feel about this? I find people letting stuff go on offer up all the time that they have no idea are rare or oop. They're usually casual movie buyers and not in the know on what's hard to find. So what do you think about preying on those oblivious folks? I personally bought a stack of 10 mostly horror blurays from a guy for $30 and within the 10 movies he had the 10 disc non deluxe bluray set of the Halloween films. Opened but still perfect condition. So i effectively paid $3 for it and since i already owned the deluxe, i sold it to some guy for $100.
Good points. Some films, like some very niche world cinema, go out of print because demand is so low that it isn't worth doing another print run for the company. Those are worth snapping up because of how unlikely it is another company will release them again.
I bought a Blu-ray of Robots (2005) for that reason. Disney dissolved Blue Sky Studios after buying Fox, so I doubt they would re-release any of their older stuff outside of Disney+.
"I hate seeing people spend a ridiculous amount of money on out of print movies" ...."sell your out of print movies at ridiculous prices and buy more movies for your collection" .....word
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that, "You're being ripped off if you buy these", and then says he did price gouging himself and didn't feel bad about it.
As time goes by, the amount of physical copies out there will reduce. This wouldn’t be a big deal if we weren’t approaching a world where the retail landscape is leaving the physical media business. It seems unbelievable, but one day you won’t be able to buy anything in physical form, other than food, furniture, clothes, etc. Hell, even with furniture, they’ll come a day when you buy basic white chairs, put on a VR visor and buy a skin for that chair to see in the VR world. I don’t like it, but I also didn’t like Redbox, but that didn’t stop everyone from destroying Blockbuster by using Redbox. It’s the normies that are destroying the world, the people that don’t know they’re killing the very things they love by embracing these new technologies. Personally, I hate VR, but it will take over the world in twenty years.
Something I wish I knew when I started collecting: Waiting is part of the hobby. It's ok to not buy something right now and wait for a better chance. Great video!
Buy stuff from the 80’s and 90’s now, it will be impossible to find anything from those decades cheap in ten years. By that, I mean stuff made at that time, not rereleases.
@@edwarddore7617 you are having a different conversation I'm not going to insult you for stressing out over the limited edition situation, I'm just saying that most of us just want the movie we want on disc with good PQ/HQ Limited editions are part of this waiting process, but they at least herald the arrival of a title some of us have been waiting for It's funny when I get slipcovers I feel kind of bad because I got someone else's collectables! But they do look nicer
Learned all of this through record collecting. "Collect what you want" is the best advice you can give. Spending a bunch of money on crap you don't actually want just because it's out of print or whatever is the path to a house full of crap nobody wants and infinite disappointment. I only made this mistake a few times while building my movie collection over the past year. This is the golden age of movie collecting. VHS, DVD, blu-ray, hell even Laserdisc is still a strong collector hobby. Every movie you want WILL be reissued. Keep your bargain bin DVD release of Dawn of the Dead, it's a fun movie that transcends the limits of media format. Eventually it'll be released on blu-ray and you'll get it for $17.
Interesting. I'm building a combined physical and digital collection for my PLEX server, and I'm considering getting out of print, limited For Your Consideration discs even for things I already own on digital like seasons 1 and 2 of Atlanta. This is mostly because I love the art. But I agree you shouldn't but something you won't want. Apple TV+ for example made a bunch of FYC discs but I'll only consider getting the disc for The Tragedy Of Macbeth because I actually want to see it.
You’re reaching your conclusion too soon. Give it ten more years and your house may be a gold mine. Physical media wasn’t dying ten years ago, this is a new thing, we’re in the fourth year of a ten year journey to everything going digital. By 2030 there will be people willing to pay thousands for a damn DVD copy of Gigli. Think about how much Nintendo cartridges are worth now, even the shitty games.
"Every movie you want WILL be reissued. Keep your bargain bin DVD release. [...] Eventually it'll be released on Blu-ray and you'll get it for $17." I'm sure that's great advice for someone who's not looking for an out of print SD Blu-ray for a show that was made in the late 80s/early 90s but was released in the US in 2019 and when it first released it was $49.95.
Yea for any dvd i check xtras and if got alot i wanna check out i go for it if can at time. it say 2 cd or sp ed or anniversary always good stuff worth the value if can do so at time.
I can appreciate these thoughts. But I am somewhat (I know essentially it IS about the movie) surprised you never touched on special features to these releases. If you really like a particular film you most likely would be interested in the extra features as well. If these “extras” are exclusive to such a release, yeah people WILL pay more for them. When I go to purchase any OOP film that I really love I always take a look at the bonus features. Audio commentaries are a big one for me.
Agreed. Also sometime rereleases come with new transfers, and there is always the chance that the transfer is worse off than before. Criterion’s are usually essential to keep even if there is a rerelease because they often change features or the inserts.
@@meyou5350 Exactly. The people who want the Criterion want it for a specific reason, not just for the title. A lot of limited runs (Arrow & Shout) have extra versions of the film. These additional versions are limited by rights and have a set number that can be sold. You're typically not going to find those cuts on a future release. So yes, as you both say, it's what the release has to offer, not just the title itself. Some MAY come back in print with everything from before, but that's not super common. I see that happen mostly with Shout releases. Although, I hear the Vincent Price set will have some stuff removed. I cannot confirm though. If you only care about watching the movie, then sure, listen to this guy.
I think it’s circumstantial. If you want a particular movie on Bluray that is OOP, you’ll find the price to typically be justified. A lot of Disney movies, for example, only got released on Bluray through their Movie Club and, with the club being disbanded and no plans to release them again anytime soon, are becoming more and more attractive to fans who missed the opportunity to purchase them before.
The thing with Criterion titles is that they do, frequently go OOP as the rights lapse. The Criterion supplemental features are unique to those titles and the restoration work done is so good and most of the time better than the normal Blu Ray releases. They also have director involvement most of the time. So. My point is , the Criterion OOP titles do sell for high prices. But they are justified.
Is it just me or is Criterion sort of lazy about advertising the titles they have rights to? At some point you realize that every Criterion title is in the very least worth your time, and I think they've kind of taken this for granted. If I was a filmmaker, I would be stoked to see one of my films put out by Criterion, but now I also see their marketing as a sort of hindrance to certain films finding their audience and market
the fuuny thing about apocalipto is you could always buy the region 2 version that is actually region free and is only 10 bucks...its been in print for years
I love everything Vincent Price and I have the first edition release of the Vincent Price Collection Volume 1 and I'm keeping it because it's the only version with the Vincent Price video intros to all the movies on the blu-ray set.
I have found that movies have more of a chance to get re-released that TV Shows. Lots of TV shows on DVD have went out of print and havnt been re-released and probably wont because of streaming.
I have tried to score shows i have an interest any or use to really watch so i try snag any if i can so can enjoy again and rewatch anytime. if any i can donate later if not wanna hassle with ebaying any.
Jackson said that? Oh good. I'll be waiting then. Hopefully Arrow does a great Blu-ray release then. Would love to see "The Bad Taste", "Meet the Feebles" and "Braindead" in a Directors approved and supervised remaster.
Hope that is true as Braindead is one of my favs but need the longer uncut/unrated version as it is much better. The Blu-ray (which I have is not this version). Have a digital copy of the uncut/unrated version.
Rico Bonifacio Yeah, I noticed the hypocrisy in that as well. Honestly, I stopped listening to what he had to say after casually mentioning how badly he ripped off that poor “Dawn of the Dead” fan.
@@JeffRauseo I kinda get if I have a high market price item i got for cheap I'll usually just sell for 20 bucks more than when I bought because I dread scalper prices
@@TheRealBGregz no hypocrisy. He advises the average person that views these videos, his "friends" if you will. Other wealthier people may be quite happy to buy for that price. A night out for me is £10-20, I know others who'd happily spend £1000.
At 84 years of age, I have a whole different problem. So many Criterion movies have been discontinued (La Strada, Nights of Cabiria) and so many have not been upgraded to blu-ray. There are so many 40's movies that have not been release on blu-ray: Arsenic and Old Lace, Bringing Up Baby, The Man Who Came to Dinner . . . I know that elders are a minority of blu-ray buyers, but there are some excellent 40's movies that have not been released and need to be.
@@mikefisher2673 Mike: I have been waiting for Gunga Din myself. I loved that Cary Grant movie. I think Criterion could make a bang-up release of this movie. I just saw the colorized version of 1935 "She" the other day and I remembered how much I loved that version. While the colorized version is magnificent, this follow-up to "King Kong" is truly an original, strikingly unusual adventure film that was forgotten from the day it was released. If you love "King Kong", you will love "She". The 1964 version and the 1985: Italian version were definitely inferior remakes of this 1935 version. Criterion could do a bang-up job on this too!
@@leoinsf Gunga Din is one of those films that show male friendships, how men joke around, and when they get in trouble they stick together. It's always in my top ten films because of the writing. I'm also a big colonial wargame nut and falls into that area too.
I really appreciate the last couple tip videos! I just got into collecting physical media this year and your channel has helped me learn a lot about home theater and physical media! I'm a big fan of the channel and I've been going back and watching a ton of your old videos and I love them all! I'm 19 so don't fully give up on my generation not caring for physical media😂 Although there aren't many some young people still love it! I do have to admit that until I found your channel I had my 4k blu ray player connected to an old non 4k reciver🤦♂️ So it didn't look much better then a standard blu ray player until I went and connected it to my tv directly........ It looks a lot better now😂 I think I speak for most everyone when I say I appreciate all the great content, keep it up! Thanks man
I think we need to distinguish between standard releases of a title and special editions. If an unremarkable edition of a film happens to go out out of print for whatever reason, then fine, why bother over-paying, just wait for it to get re-released. But that isn't the same as a special edition with deluxe packaging and/or a unique set of extras. If something like that goes out of print then it is worth a lot more to collectors, and rightly so, and it's more likely to hold its value too. Even if such a title is later re-released, not all the special features are always ported over, and rights issues mean they sometimes can't be, or the company that made them has gone out of business. It's the difference between wanting to own a title and wanting to collect a particular edition, I suppose, and the latter is what most collectors are interested in.
This definitely feels like a video for people who don't collect movies already. Those people are also most likely going to just stream it anyway. The reason Man Who Fell To Earth and Third Man retain value is because they're Criterion. Hell, even the DVD of Ran is still worth a decent amount, even though a Blu-ray exists. Unfortunately, that version is visually crap IMO and that of many others.
I would say this is true for standard edtions etc. But when it comes to Steelbooks and collectors edtions they rarely if anything ever come back once OOP. Sure the movie might come out again with a different style of Steelbook etc, but if your a die hard collector of a particular movie, then you do have look out for the best deal, even if it means spending $$$.
I agree, I am a HUGE Queen fan, so when Bohemian Rhapsody came out, I made sure to get the Steelbook as a special thing because it looked so beautiful and the band means so much to me (even though the movie had its problems). It went out of stock quickly and I don't think it's been re-released in that Steelbook so I am glad that I bought it!
Yeah. The original Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVD box sets are the most gorgeous DVD sets I have ever seen: the box, the artwork, the packaging - exquisite. Those have not been reprinted. The Blu-ray set that came out around 2010 or so does not hold a candle to it in that regard.
I'll never sell my OOP movies, because they mean more to me than just money. Sure, someone else might release it again, and if I like that movie enough, I'll buy it again. I mean, I've got 12 different versions of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, 8 versions of The Thing and 9 versions of Alien. I collect movies based on the unique packaging, extras, etc... Not just the movie.
Yeah if i cared about just having the movie i would probably go mostly digital. But theres alot of nostagia in all the different versions you mentioned, plus "the thrill of the hunt" that goes into just about any collecting hobby. Its a big part of the fun for me ( and trying to make it all fit neatly in my apt)
Agree, I've got multiple special editions of single titles or boxed sets for things I'm interested in as I like the packaging as well as the contents... Probably doesn't apply to everything but for example with the Star Wars films I own multiple editions of these on every format since the VHS days right up to the recent Skywalker saga 4k box set! Dawn of the dead I have several sets of as well and don't plan to sell any. I have pre-ordered the new Halloween set but I like the tin and don't plan to sell it and will leave it in my archive. As Jeff said though, each to their own. The saving money thing makes sense for most people in many cases but some people are happy to wear the fact they have multiple copies and aren't fussed about (or fortunate enough financially) selling them and making the extra money. Plus for some of these things it was an adventure to track down and I want to keep that item and the memory of chasing it down. All part of the fun!
Finally, it's nice to see someone else with so many different versions of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. My other 2 movies I buy loads of versions of are Fargo and Clerks, haha.
There is one major caveat to your argument here. And that is BONUS MATERIAL. For a man who loves his Arrow and Scream factory, you should know that these houses often pay to ah e their own extra material made.. commentaries, interviews and even documentaries are often funded in house, not by the major studios. So when these titles go out of print, there is no guarantee that the same party will release it again. It may be some other company’s turn or the main studio that release the film again. (Often arroyo w and Scream release the same films, but at different e times, and often they have their own set of extras). Arrow at one point also could not afford to buy outright the exisiting extras for some movies they released. So the problem here is that you end up with people double, triple and so on dipping into the well to get hold of all the material they can beyond the film itself. And that’s why they may pay the extra for it.. not because they don’t think the film will released again. I agree people should be careful, but if they want those special features, they may want or have to pay extra if they miss it upon release
@@glyn420 You don't see it ironic that he's telling people not to buy OOP movies but yet sold his OOP movies purposely because people are paying alot for them. I'd prefer he edit that part out IMO We didnt need to know that. If you're telling people not to do it, then why did you do it? I dunno. It's hypocritical.
ChiefBrodyRules did you listen to the video he never says don’t buy oop videos. He says don’t buy for more than you would normally pay. And by selling into the market he calls inflated it’s just smart. He buys back then when rereleased. So no I see zero wrong with making money.
@@glyn420 I worded it wrong, so let me say it like this: If I was making a video trying to convince people not to purchase over priced OOP movies, I would not also tell my audience I took advantage of the situation by selling my OOP movies for high prices. To me, there's a disconnect. It's like "You think it's wrong the movies are selling for that high and people are buying them at those prices. But then you turn around and sell them at those prices." If you disagree, then you disagree. There's no need to explain further. We just have different morals and make different life choices. I personally disagree.
What you're saying is true in principle but it's highly unlikely that say, we're going to get a re-release of the shout factory Halloween deluxe blu ray collection. You can sit and wait for years in the hopes of a re-release of something similar but then you're waiting years The only way I think spending over the odds hurts is if you're buying to sell down the road and a re-release destroys your investment - however, if you're spending an inflated amount on a rare release that you're going to cherish then it makes no difference about resale value or re-release
And now there is a 4K collection. Lol I didn’t get the box set but did get the cheaper version. I am now getting the 4K’s. Thought about paying a ridiculous amount for that box set and now I’m so glad I didn’t. Movies that popular ALWAYS go back into print.
@@ohthahorrorPersonally, the OOP stuff I look for is a bit more niche and unlikely to be released again ever, for example, one is an SD Blu-ray of a show that released in the late 80s/early 90s but that got its first North America release in 2019 and the main reason why the distributor bought the rights to release it was because it was the cheapest of that franchise to license.
The Man Who Fell To Earth is a different situation. The color timing is really bizarre on the boxset version in comparison to the Criterion, and the Criterion has exclusive features in comparison to the box.
It's not even limited to include things like color timings. I can see in the future movies having certain parts censored depending on what's acceptable for the period. Toy story 2 is an example of this. The outtake scene in the end credits with stinky Pete is no longer in the any of the Blu ray, 4k Blu ray re-releases or streaming platforms. I remember back when Titanic had home release on VHS parents had the scene with Jack and Rose in the car manually removed as they thought it was inappropriate for children. Can't remember if it's OOP but Gone with the wind was removed from streaming platforms so I doubt that will get a re-release. Who knows what else will happen to other films.
What do you mean by "color timing"? Btw- I have the Criterion release of that title in the DVD and book version, although I have no real need or desire to upgrade to a BD or UHD format.
John Travolta is typically one of those no brainer actors that sells. Well, you still can't even buy "The Experts" or "Two of a Kind" on blu-ray. And you can't even buy "The Experts" on DVD either. It's still only released on VHS. So yeah, this idea doesn't work for all titles.
I bought Gone With the Wind on black Friday last year for 3$ at best buy. Sold it on eBay for 30$ and bought the new bruce lee greatest hits criterion 50% off from barnes and noble.
In depends on the movie, most comedies and many dramas look fine on DVD, but if you have a scifi, action, or scenic movie, it's going to benefit greatly from blu-ray or 4K.
There are exceptions to this though. The Woody Allen movies are all OOP in the US now and will almost certainly never go back into print due to the stigma with his name. Some movies won't ever go back into print.
I wasn't aware that (many or all of) his titles have gone OOP. I've had copies of some of his early work comedies on DVD for twenty years or so and those are just fine by me, no need to upgrade to higher res formats.
Jeff, Im loving these videos about advice for collectors, especially the ones about OOP titles. A suggestion for a future video: how about talking about some of those films that are OOP and you think theres a big chance they wont be coming back?
Great video! I think this is a very real aspect of collecting and I appreciate the reinforcement cause its tough sometimes to resist! Cable Guy and Adaptation come to mind as recent examples. Your tip on Hamilton Book got me the They Live Steelbook LE for $30 a few months ago, it was going for over $100 at the time. Not trying to sell that one though because i truly treasure it. Thanks for the videos Jeff!
You start saying avoid scalpers and paying over the odds for a title then you state you sell Dawn of the Dead for 20 times more than what you paid for it??? Smart shopping? Buyer's remorse? I'm seeing this video as double standards.
@@rosstee And what is the title of the video and point of not paying silly money for OOP titles? Surprisingly i've seen this video shared across multiple collectors groups online and across social media and they've all said the same thing. Point taken.
As a collector you are forced to do this because otherwise it's not to do wth own earned money for many people. Smart shopping indeed. Blame the stupid people who pay those ridiculous prices. If nobody bought them the would decrease in price,
you're telling people not to buy movies at an inflated price but at the same time telling them to sell their movies at an inflated price. you're really not helping
It is the buy low, sell high principle. Not really hypocritical. He is also saying don't hold onto them waiting to see them go higher. Sell to get other titles you want.
To be fair, selling out of print items for insanely cheap means some buyers will buy them in order to resell it on their own. That wouldn't be fair, that's why ebay auction exists to allow people bid what they want to pay for.
You don't get hispoint. Why do you think he does that? If you collect you cannot simply pay what you want with your hard earned money, at least I think 95% of the people here.... He is giving advice to buyers but at the same point he tells how you can acvieve a bigger collecting if you do it like this. So if you had listened good enough you would have known what was his point here.....
Supply and demand is basic economics. It doesn't change because of emotions or morals. If everyone decided not to sell at higher prices, all that rare stuff would be bought up in a second and there'd be NO option to buy it. At least selling at higher prices allows them to be available. If you want it bad enough then it might be worth the money to you and someone is probably willing to part with it for that money, otherwise he'd just keep it.
You have showed me a lot by watching your videos and this is one of the best videos because I have been looking higher and low for so many out of print movies. Thank you again
Totally agree, if I see a DVD or Blu Ray at a crazy price, shrug my shoulders and hope that it will turn up again at a more decent price. It is the same with comic book editions where the prices at 50 pounds and then they are at OOP at it goes to 300 quid, give a year and it will be probably re-released at the previous 50 quid. Got Dawn of the Dead in just a standard version, perfectly happy with that - would spend insane large amounts on it as I can recall it well enough. As you say, OOP items often turn up in secondhand stores.
It's my understanding that Second Sight won't ship to the US and the Dawn of the Dead set will be Blu-ray only (4K mastering). The information on the upcoming set is unclear. It's frustrating.
The Amazon UK listing has this unfortunate message: This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location.
Some of these things just never get re-printed.... Like when I bought my gamera Blu Ray set that it went out of print and now they are doing another one but with 4k transfers..... So honestly? It's really a guessing game sometimes.... If your lucky you will end up with a few out of print titles. Things to lookout for..... Out of print 4k steelbooks, most of them never gets a reprint so once they are gone? They are GONE forever. Heck most steelbooks never get re-printed, the movies might but the steelbooks won't. Some limited edition sets if they are only printing like a really small quantity of it? Chances are it's not going to get a reprint once it's sold out.... Same goes for the collectors edtions, most of those are a one and done kind of thing because they are expensive to make in the first place. Out of print horror movies usually also never get re-printed, that's more reserved for more mainstream titles. If it's a popular movie the chances are it's going to get like 3-5 other editions through the years. The fanbase, does the movie/series have a cult following behind it? If not nobody is going to be going out of their way to collect something worthless. Has it been re-printed before? Disney does a lot of reprinting on their animated classics from DVD to Blu Ray to 4k... Etc... Sometimes as I said you can't anticipate it, like who knew Friday the 13th was ever going to get a new reprint set for all the movies? And lastly try not to end up like with 5 copy's of the same movie/series....
Or if it's a niche interest in the west, like everything I try to get, there'll be one printing, most likely on Blu-ray or SD Blu-ray, and when that runs out it never gets released or reprinted again.
@@LiMe251 That's true most of those SD-Blu-Ray formats usually only get released once and never really reprinted later on because that specific format is supposed to be for like more meh titles that don't really get like the nice new HD transfers to make it to full Blu-Ray quality, and as a result they are usually just a one time thing.
I got about half-burnt on the Vincent Price Vol. 1 set from Scream, because I definitely paid more than the reprint is going to be, but I really like those introductions that aren't being moved over, so at least I have that.

@@djsoulfilter I'm fine with cheese.. To me it was more that it felt like a rushed made for tv movie. And shot like a nonsense teen sitcom. Poor casting. Bad acting and not scary in the least bit. But I'm not knocking those who enjoy it
you make a very good point.. that Classic Cars can not be reproduced.. movie discs can be easily reproduced, and with new excellent techno, ogy and know-how, the movies look fantiastic, much better than the bluray you paid for 5 years ago. If you look at a 4K Hitchcock movie like Virtigo - it's just flat out amazing how the experts at Universal improved the viewing experience. Thanks for another excellent video.
This is a reason to buy things you like before they go out of print. Some rare obscure titles might be worth buying for lot of money. If it means a lot to you. Hell I bought an import copy of a movie for 30 now the better code red release is going for 20 when it was 40. If I would Have waited a few months, I could have got a better release for cheaper.
Thanks Jeff for all the tips and suggestions you made on both of these collecting videos. I appreciate you looking out for us, and sharing the knowledge. Keep up the great work!
The Halloween scream factory 15 disc set is going for $1,000 on eBay do you think it’s worth buying at that price point since they will never release those movies again on Blu-ray?
Lol thanks to this video I found out that I can finally buy the freakin Phantom. Ive been wanting that movie since forever. It may be some random Billy Zane movie, but Ive been hunting down these 90s adaptations of pulp stories, like The Shadow, The Rocketeer, Dick Tracy and The Phantom, among others.
It's so much more than just the movie itself. Some editions with one cut go out of print and then gets released with a whole diffrent cut not including the previous one. So even if they do release the same film it can be a diffrent cut.
Yes, and the re-releases may have different/newer bonus features and sometimes different or newer commentaries. A lot of this depends on whether or not it's the same label doing the re-release.
Thank you! I will never pay a premium for OOP titles. The idea that Paramount was never going to release Clueless again was ridiculous, and to see people paying $30-40 for it was insane. And if I see one more person listing Dogma for $60+ on eBay! A big part of collecting is the hunt; just throwing down lots of money on eBay or other sites really takes all the fun out of it. Unless it’s the most obscure title you could ever think of, popular movies (even remotely popular) will find a way to get released again. All those OOP Miramax titles, they’re coming back at some point-sooner rather than later I would suspect. There’s just too much money to be made not to re-release them.
TBF re: Dogma, there's a pretty significant stumbling block to making that available again anytime soon, because the Weinsteins are involved and they're otherwise engaged.
Another great video! To add, for years I wanted to pull the trigger on Dr. who the David Tennant years on bluray that went out of print. The price sky rocketed to like $300. A while back they released a complete collection of those same series for $30. Saved a lot of money being patient.
How have I only just discovered this channel? As a 4K/Blu-ray/DVD obsessive collector, I can see this becoming a bible of sorts for me going forward... :)
This has happened to me so many times! I desperately wanted Attack of the Killer Tomatoes on DVD. I finally won it on eBay for a bundle, A TON. Then, mere months later, it came out on Blu-ray for $20. I didn't think about checking to see if a Blu-ray release was coming around the bend, and just bought the DVD at a huge price... Why did I do that? Hahahaha! You live and you learn.
Good video and I agree on practically all your points. One thing that factors in for me is edition. I may want to get a certain release because of the extras and other material. Example: This is Spinal Tap, the Criterion version. That got yanked very quickly due to MGM/UA wanting to release their version. I missed out on the Criterion release, which had different extras than the MGM release and had to settle for the MGM. Since the Criterion release goes for crazy money on the secondary market (and I don't see Criterion doing another release) I'd have to go to secondary markets for it and pay through the nose. The problems of being a picky collector...
Agree...you should never buy out of print movies for a ridiculous price that pisses me off when i see ppl do that to collectors....hey by the way i have a copy of near dark im willing to part with for $90 plus shipping...INTERESTED? 😊
joey curcurato Yeah. I learned this back a few years ago when i bought Arrow's release of House By the Cemetery on Ebay for a RIDICOULESS amount of moneyand about 1 month after i've gotten it i find on Amazon that they're repressing it. I literally hated myself for that tbh. 🤣🤣🤣
Great video. I never buy oop titles . Unless its 3d north American titles. I do the same . Sell it to fund my collection. Only waiting for ticks to get released again from another company
Thank you for the information your awesome on keeping all of us movie diehards with the latest and greatest and how to make some cash to keep our collections even more valuable much appreciated.
@@CatDadChris My hope is that once Tarantino releases his next film, since his 10th is supposedly going to be his last, that they will then make a 4K set with all 10 of his films. That would be really nice and I would buy that, since I don't currently own my own copies of any of them.
You can easily get it in the Amazon-exclusive Tarantino Blu-Ray set. It’s only about $50 on sale, which it usually is, and it comes with 7 other movies, each in their own standalone case. I bought it for about $25. It’s not rare, you just need to know where to find it.
@@ajzeg01 I was saying that I was hoping for a 4K set, not a Blu Ray set, plus his tenth (supposedly final) film has not been made yet, so that is not what I was looking for. Thanks for the info though
I have seen people really only sell copies after they get the new format or upgrade any so it any easy sell and not regret incase u wanna rewatch but gotta wait for another copy.
I disagree. I understand your reasoning - but as a collector who is only interested in the specific movies I want for my collection, many of those are OOP. And they are worth buying for me.
@@Lona_Chess I do think he is correct that most of these eventually will get another release if they're a big title - i.e Free Willy is eventually getting a 4K release 100%, etc. But what if I'd like to watch the movie during the 5 years before it is re-released? lol. And for lesser-known films, many never will have another physical release, like you said.
Video advice: Don't buy OOP movies that cost and arm and a leg and spend stupid money...then I sold my dawn of the dead and dead alive at 20 times the price.
To be fair, selling out of print items for insanely cheap means some buyers will buy them in order to resell it on their own. That wouldn't be fair, that's why ebay auction exists to allow people bid what they want to pay for.
@@antiquityvarmintwesleyhoag2909 I'm a believer in capitalism but you can't tell an audience not to buy oop movies for ridiculous price then proceed to tell them how you are the person selling these movies for 10+ times their price. There will always be a market for OOP. So my motto is if it is going to sell for that price, sell it if you want but i would never tell people not to buy a movie. If you're lucky, you get one cheap. I got dead alive blu ray for $3 at a yard sale.
I would agree with you 99% of the time. I did go against this rule just recently with the RAD 4K release from Vinegar Syndrome. VS stated on their site that, “ we will not be repressing this release in any format once it sells out”, so I took the plunge and grabbed a copy on Ebay for a crazy price. I had to do it, as Rad is one of my all time fav’s and being such a small obscure release there’s a good chance that we’ll never see this one on 4K again.
Utopia just put out a Blu-ray of Rad and I guess it streaming now so I'm sure someone else will release it now and Utopia said they may do another run.
The one I missed out on was this obscure horror movie "Ticks" Its about giant ticks (duhh) and I think it was Seth Green's 1st movie. Sells for around $200 and I really dont see it getting reissued. It's not a bad movie, but its not as well known as other horror films
And Carlton from fresh prince 😂 Quite a fun flick, thankfully all mine are digital media these days, no physical collections for me anymore. ...not since big box VHS days.lol
I'm sure you noticed but not long after you posted this it was released on 4K - I just searched and it's not hard to find or expensive now. Can probably get the original blu-ray cheap enough now as well!
I just sold my dawn of the dead that for $50 that I bought for $5. After just watching this video, didn't know Jackie Brown was worth so much so might sell that too 👍
I know, I thought that was crazy. I bought the Tarantino 8 movie set for $40 CDN, I didn't know how expensive Jackie Brown is, one of my favorite movies though, I probably won't sell.
Hopefully when you make your money and replace whatever you sold with a new version that it's not flawed. This is something to consider. I've watched some of your videos touching on that.
Like the mother fuckers in Seattle in 99’ buying up all the Metallica seats, then sells for double....BS
TARGET store- just sold their online exclusive- GI JOE CLASSIFIED toys, transformers SS #68, and a couple Star Wars black series- all sold out in first 7 seconds!
My thoughts exactly.
Well it’s one instance where it could force you to pirate a film I prefer to get disc whenever I can but I’m not paying $100 for a single disc
Hay I watch you
I bought a Blu-ray of Robots (2005) for that reason. Disney dissolved Blue Sky Studios after buying Fox, so I doubt they would re-release any of their older stuff outside of Disney+.
"I hate seeing people spend a ridiculous amount of money on out of print movies"
...."sell your out of print movies at ridiculous prices and buy more movies for your collection"
.....word
Exactly. Don’t be like the suckers I sell to, be like me - a shark!
I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that, "You're being ripped off if you buy these", and then says he did price gouging himself and didn't feel bad about it.
Scalpers are annoying as fuck
That glitch has also dented my respect for what otherwise appears to be a decent chap.
Something I wish I knew when I started collecting:
Waiting is part of the hobby. It's ok to not buy something right now and wait for a better chance.
Great video!
Sometimes though waiting is not a good idea, I've learned the hard way to pre order special editions of boutique label releases
Buy stuff from the 80’s and 90’s now, it will be impossible to find anything from those decades cheap in ten years. By that, I mean stuff made at that time, not rereleases.
@@edwarddore7617 you are having a different conversation
I'm not going to insult you for stressing out over the limited edition situation, I'm just saying that most of us just want the movie we want on disc with good PQ/HQ
Limited editions are part of this waiting process, but they at least herald the arrival of a title some of us have been waiting for
It's funny when I get slipcovers I feel kind of bad because I got someone else's collectables!
@@82pythons85 yeah but those cartridges were marketed to kids, slightly different situation. We'll just have to wait and see, you might be right.
"Every movie you want WILL be reissued. Keep your bargain bin DVD release. [...] Eventually it'll be released on Blu-ray and you'll get it for $17."
I'm sure that's great advice for someone who's not looking for an out of print SD Blu-ray for a show that was made in the late 80s/early 90s but was released in the US in 2019 and when it first released it was $49.95.

“Don’t buy OOP titles for ridiculous prices!!”
Five mins later….
“I sold a bunch of blu ray for ridiculous prices”
I’m praying the Peter Sellers Pink Panther movies get re released on blu ray. I love those movies and refuse to pay 200-300 dollars on eBay for it

I was just looking at the OOP Elizabeth Hurley Bedazzled and that price is absolutely insane.
WHAT ABOUT AIRHEADS? That bluray has been oop for atleast 5 years.
Ya steelbooks almost never get re-printed that's for sure.
Like Bumblebee
You only wanted to watch “Dead Alive” ONCE… To each his own, but… Wow!!!
DAWN OF THE DEAD IS RE-RELEASED ON BLU-RAY AND 4K ON AMAZON
I love The Thing, have the Shout steelbook, and amaray, but what versions do you have?
Finally, it's nice to see someone else with so many different versions of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. My other 2 movies I buy loads of versions of are Fargo and Clerks, haha.
@@itsyaboidale i did that with every version of the shining. VHS, full screen DVD, letterbox DVD, remastered DVD, blu-ray and now 4k
LOL
You basically said "I don't recommend buying high priced OOP movies but I took full advantage of it when I sold them." That's amazing.
I think that means he obviously acted on his words or if you prefer put his money where his mouth was.
@@glyn420
I worded it wrong, so let me say it like this:
If I was making a video trying to convince people not to purchase over priced OOP movies, I would not also tell my audience I took advantage of the situation by selling my OOP movies for high prices.
To me, there's a disconnect. It's like "You think it's wrong the movies are selling for that high and people are buying them at those prices. But then you turn around and sell them at those prices."
If you disagree, then you disagree. There's no need to explain further. We just have different morals and make different life choices. I personally disagree.
@@ChiefBrodyRules literally what i was thinking in my head. He comes of as hypocrite throughout. Plus it's 3% you find it for retail price or lower.
What you're saying is true in principle but it's highly unlikely that say, we're going to get a re-release of the shout factory Halloween deluxe blu ray collection. You can sit and wait for years in the hopes of a re-release of something similar but then you're waiting years
The only way I think spending over the odds hurts is if you're buying to sell down the road and a re-release destroys your investment - however, if you're spending an inflated amount on a rare release that you're going to cherish then it makes no difference about resale value or re-release
If you a holding on cause you love the movie I say don’t sell it with the state of physical media it may never come back
Fair point. But like I said if it’s a movie you’ve watched and don’t feel like you need, go get your money!
Don't know why people buy movies on ebay. You can get them a lot cheaper on Amazon and new
The Man Who Fell To Earth is a different situation. The color timing is really bizarre on the boxset version in comparison to the Criterion, and the Criterion has exclusive features in comparison to the box.
Criterion releases are known for being done propperly, so yeah.. i get that. Love all my Kurosawa Samurai films from Criterion.
I’m pondering who needs a blu ray copy of Two of a Kind.. 🤣
@@Supernivek80 onj and Travolta fans I guess. I count myself as an onj fan but I keep forgetting it even exists lol
I bought Gone With the Wind on black Friday last year for 3$ at best buy. Sold it on eBay for 30$ and bought the new bruce lee greatest hits criterion 50% off from barnes and noble.
That’s so based Jesus Christ lmao
cool story bro
Love this channel. Do you have any videos on standard DVDs? Cause honestly for some reason i love DVDs still and don't wanna go 4k
VHS are a good example for paying a premium because they ain't making them anymore!
This always is not the case, i could name a few that have been out of print for over 4 years:
Airheads
Caligula
Stuck On You (matt damon comedy)
If you have it on DVD, don't waste your money trying to get an OOP bluray.
If you have it on VHS don't upgrade
If you have it in Laserdisk don't upgrade.
@@wowster762
There is a fine line between VHS/DVD than there is to DVD/Blu-Ray.
In depends on the movie, most comedies and many dramas look fine on DVD, but if you have a scifi, action, or scenic movie, it's going to benefit greatly from blu-ray or 4K.
If you have an 8mm 30-minute edited version, don’t upgrade
There are exceptions to this though. The Woody Allen movies are all OOP in the US now and will almost certainly never go back into print due to the stigma with his name. Some movies won't ever go back into print.
I wasn't aware that (many or all of) his titles have gone OOP. I've had copies of some of his early work comedies on DVD for twenty years or so and those are just fine by me, no need to upgrade to higher res formats.
Director's Cut, Unrated, Extended Editions, when available are a better choice and value when purchasing/investing than OOP titles.
Great points, thanks for the video! I'm currently looking for the Godzilla vs Biollante bluray but people insist on asking way too much for it.
I tried to do your ebay tip in sending a watcher an offer but I dont see that as an option - was that something you did recently or maybe a beta?
You have to scroll to the bottom and just send the seller a message. It sometimes works unless the seller thinks they REALLY have something rare.
I’ve gotten offers from sellers that I was watching items from so its an option
I only bought Dawn of the Dead on blue ray for a high price, but I don’t buy movies very often so it kind of rounds itself out...
just download it and then pay for it when they reprint it
Sound advice, no matter the hobby you should always be looking for ways to make it pay for itself or at least offset the cost.
He had one copy he’d managed to find for $3, and sold it to someone who really wanted it. That’s not scalping, it’s just supply and demand.
@@rosstee And what is the title of the video and point of not paying silly money for OOP titles? Surprisingly i've seen this video shared across multiple collectors groups online and across social media and they've all said the same thing.
Point taken.
DJ Mitz Yeah, it’s definitely hypocritical. Even if he does do that, he probably shouldn’t have talked about it so boldly in such a video.
As a collector you are forced to do this because otherwise it's not to do wth own earned money for many people. Smart shopping indeed. Blame the stupid people who pay those ridiculous prices. If nobody bought them the would decrease in price,
Ross Tarran thank you. People here don’t understand basic economics.
My biggest blu ray/dvd hunts are criterion releases and some of those can get way up in price when they’re out of print
But I literally can’t watch 28 days later anywhere
So you're saying it's OK so sell expensive but not buy expensive? Ok, got it.
you're telling people not to buy movies at an inflated price but at the same time telling them to sell their movies at an inflated price. you're really not helping
That was what I reacted to as well. What a hypocrite!
Holy shit, i wasn't even aware that Peter Jackson's early 90s guilty pleasure "Braindead" (Dead Alive) already HAS a Blu-ray release.
Great movie.
The new Dawn of the Dead set from second sight is gonna be amazing!
Yes can’t wait, it’s gonna be long time before it comes in 😩😩😩😩😩😩😩
The only thing that’s bad is the 4K Disc are region free but the blu ray in the set is region 2 🤦🏾♂️
It's my understanding that Second Sight won't ship to the US and the Dawn of the Dead set will be Blu-ray only (4K mastering). The information on the upcoming set is unclear. It's frustrating.
The Amazon UK listing has this unfortunate message:
This item cannot be shipped to your selected delivery location. Please choose a different delivery location.
Yup, Dawn of the Dead is UK and ebay only. WTF!
Sell expensive stuff you dont care about and buy stuff you like. Best advice I've ever heard about collecting anything.

Excellent job on this video! Very informative. Thanks!
Great vid! Are you thinking of reviewing the Paramount Presents Blu-ray of Airplane!?
I don’t think I’m ever gonna sell Dogma.
Most titles eventually come back into print. It's all about patients
Patients are for doctors, I will leave that to them - however I do recommend having patience to find a good deal. 😉
Films At Home lol 🤣
Stop buying crap just because its cheap. No one needs CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, SISTER ACT 2 on Bluray... or at all.
I remember I waited over 2 years for Hot Rod to get a new printing. It took all my patience.
Great advice. I have purchased OOP or rare blu rays using the techniques you have suggested.
I have never overpaid.
I'm waiting for the halloween complete collection to be re released on blu-ray
It’ll probably happen after Halloween Ends.
what do you say to "politically corrected" new releases?
I don't trust any new or re-releases anymore!

Godzilla vs Biollante blu-ray is OOP. I hope they re release it some day.
No SD Blu-ray?
This has happened to me so many times! I desperately wanted Attack of the Killer Tomatoes on DVD. I finally won it on eBay for a bundle, A TON. Then, mere months later, it came out on Blu-ray for $20. I didn't think about checking to see if a Blu-ray release was coming around the bend, and just bought the DVD at a huge price... Why did I do that? Hahahaha! You live and you learn.
The Vincent Price collection reissue is missing some of the content from the original release, so it's really not a true reissue.
This is the reason that i haven't bought Near Dark on Ebay yet. I'm holding out hope that someone will do a re-release (Arrow Video would be welcome)

You can easily get it in the Amazon-exclusive Tarantino Blu-Ray set. It’s only about $50 on sale, which it usually is, and it comes with 7 other movies, each in their own standalone case. I bought it for about $25. It’s not rare, you just need to know where to find it.

The one I missed out on was this obscure horror movie "Ticks"
Its about giant ticks (duhh) and I think it was Seth Green's 1st movie. Sells for around $200 and I really dont see it getting reissued. It's not a bad movie, but its not as well known as other horror films
And Carlton from fresh prince 😂
Quite a fun flick, thankfully all mine are digital media these days, no physical collections for me anymore.
...not since big box VHS days.lol
I've seen it, it's not $200 good, or even $100, or $50 good. For those prices I'd rather stream it.
I'm sure you noticed but not long after you posted this it was released on 4K - I just searched and it's not hard to find or expensive now. Can probably get the original blu-ray cheap enough now as well!
“The Abyss” is very hard to find right now.
