I can't recommend this game enough! My family and I brought this along on a 3-week vacation and we played it constantly! Several times a day and it really didn't get boring. We aren't hardcore gamers, but we're definitely above the 'avarage' boardgamer in terms of experience with boardgames. It is a very unique game, and I don't think you'll find simular aspects in Catan. The trading in this is very unique from anything else! Great and a somewhat simple game!
In Germany, this is a CULT game - much more successful than many "Spiel des Jahres" games. You can get several good expansions for it - and it's fun! It's very interactive, and fits to almost every group of gamers. A great game for the whole family.
Always buy the 3rd bean field! Also, there are a lot more cards out on the table and in hands so that the game doesn't last as long with 7 players. You just need to make sure people keep their turn moving quickly.
4:39 About the rules... From my understanding you don't have to get rid of the field with the most beans in it when you have to plant a bean and there is no field available. You just chose the field you want to get rid of that have at least two beans. From the rulebook : he must harvest and sell (see harvesting and selling beans) all the beans in one of his fields and then must plant the card in the now empty field.
You are correct that you do not have to get rid of the field with the most beans when foreced to harvest, but you can not harvest a field with only 1 bean unless both fields have only 1. That might be where the confusion is coming from.
Picked up a copy a couple days ago. I think this is in the category of, "you need to learn it from someone who's played it before," because the rules are completely incomprehensible once you get past the point of "take the first bean from your hand and plant it." The stuff on trading and donating beans is written in such a garbled manner that we couldn't get beyond that. The one illustration appears to be completely contradictory to the text. Hope the folks at the store can help!
Thanks so much for the review, Tom and Sam. I've heard this is good, and read a review (probably yours), but the videos are always better. I would've liked to hear your review when you were still enthusiastic about it, though. This might be a good game for my group; we don't have any that involve trading, and I can't get anyone interested in trying Settlers of Catan.
I wish I got to play this enough to get burnt out. I love this game and have for many years. High level of interaction is a big selling point for me but you do need a group that's willing to interact. I'd pick up the main US expansion which has some new beans in it so you can adjust the size of the deck and make it a little shorter.
Woo! Bohnanza! One of my favorite games right now, because it can be played by a bunch of people of different ages, and is light and fun. Dirt cheap. I still think it's a must-have. But if you have a bunch of adults in a game group, there are probably better choices.
We enjoy it, but I agree that it can be overplayed. It works well as a gateway game and can be fun to play with a group, especially if you're not pressed for time. Of course, there are a lot of other games out there so you can have some variety to keep this one in the "not overplayed" category. For the price, it's well worth the investment. (Though I still recommend Dominion or Ticket to Ride to most as starter games. :) )
hey! so at 4:55 you said nothing would happen if you only had 3 or less of the blue beans. so then would you just have to keep the wax bean in the front of your hand?
I can understand your opinion, but I disagree. Bohnanza is a great game. After playing it a couple of times, I also get a bit sick of it, but that's why there are expansions (I recommend "High Bohn" and "La Isla Bohnita"). Thanks for the review. It was interesting to hear your opinions.
We have a German language set and the denominations only go from 6 to 20, no coffee, wax or cocoa. Is ours a simplified game or did we buy something different?
Old comment but the answer is that there's an industry belief that these games sell better when they are larger and stand out on the shelf. They are also more likely to be displayed face-out and attract more people to pick then up. I believe I read once Fantasy Flight actually tried to go to smaller box sizes and found a corresponding drop off in sales.

But buy the 3rd field as early as possible to make the most use of it.

I like the new music! This is one of my wife's and my favorite games.

I couldn't agree more. The rules seem impenetrable, but once you've learnt them (from someone else) you wonder why you didn't get it immediately.
You just need to watch one or two good tutorial videos, and then the rulebook will get a lot of sense

Please do a tutorial/review video on the Bohnanza expansions! Primarily Pirates and Princesses! Can't find a video on them ANYWHERE!

But what do you play if you want to play a light, trading game, Tom?

Where did episode 87 go? ;)
hey! so at 4:55 you said nothing would happen if you only had 3 or less of the blue beans. so then would you just have to keep the wax bean in the front of your hand?
What he meant was you wouldn't get any money for the blue beans. You still have to harvest them and plant the wax bean.
I can understand your opinion, but I disagree.

It's so hard to learn La Isla Bohnita (the Pirates expansion). I've been looking for tutorials and can't find them anywhere!
I'll take it! Give it to me! Or if not me, at least have a contest giveaway.
We have a German language set and the denominations only go from 6 to 20, no coffee, wax or cocoa. Is ours a simplified game or did we buy something different?
The German version is just the base game. The Rio Grande English version includes cards from the expansion already.
this review had me excited to buy it, then convinced me out of it
This game is worth getting.
@@verticalisland7 years later and I've considered it but still haven't got it
why are the boxes soo much bigger than those we have in germany?!? Its the same with machi koro and many others

I feel the exact same way about Dixit. It is a good game, I like it but my wife has made me play it so much i am sick of it.
I hate the donation factor.... Sometimes people donate way too generously...
are there any games like this that have cute art. the beans are so ugly... 😑
Love Sushi Go!
