The shift from entirely facing the camera to those great close-up play shots with the speed played with was fantastic, made for a really engaging video. Loved it!
I have a box that comes with me to conventions, it is exactly the right size for a shoulder bag. Inside are stone cold classics you can break out anywhere. Bohnanza, Love Letter, For Sale, Botswana, No Thanks, Citadels, and Archaeology the Card Game. So yeah, Bohnanza is awesome and everyone who has 3+ gamer friends needs a copy.
if you enjoy this short history of classic board games, i really can recommend the "ludology" podcast. They have a series called "Biography of a board game". Its a series beside their mainepisodes (talks) on boardgame design ;)
Bohnanza is one of the best card games! It even plays up to 7 and well. Everybody is interacting the entire time even if it isn't your turn. And then recommending Lords of Vegas as a next step game is amazing. It might be my #1 game of all time just for pure fun with an amazing catch up mechanism. It's just SO good!
High Bohn (or High Bohn Plus) is an interesting expansion with buildings you can buy to give special powers. Bohn to be Wild is a fun spin-off with all different beans, a few extra rules and special powers on the beans which allow 2 bean types to be played in the same field, skipping a phase of your turn, drawing extra cards and things like that.
Ah, pretty close, Jon. „Bean“ in German is „Bohne“, not „Bohn“. But everything else is quite true. Bohnanza is one of my favourite card games for as long as I can remember.
I think he pronounced it Bohn because of his english native tongue. So give him credit for explaining puns not in his motherlanguage. It was close enough.
My First Bohnanza is horribly underrated, giving my children as young as 3-y.o. their first chance at negotiation. There are cards in the game that can be added in over time to approach the diversity and complexity of the base game.
Great and informative video! I can also recommend the two player version of Bohnanza "Das Duell" ("The Duel"). While when playing Catan with 2 players, trading doesn't make much sense, "The Duel" adds bonus cards that award coins and "bohnus points" for having a specific order of cards on either players field. It adds an incentive for trading your opponent cards he wants, so that you can fulfill a bonus or let's you use a, from your opponents pov, "dummy" card traded to you. (You also have three fields by default, allowing for more flexibility). In my experience, while the fixed card order and the forced cards you have to plant/trade in the trading phase make it seem like a game heavily relying on luck, but just like the box and the video describes, it comes down much more to strategizing the order in which to play and what to trade than to pure luck. Most of the lost games I can track back to some misplay earlier in the game, like holding on to long. Thanks again for the video!
I love this game, and I love the artwork too. My strategy is always to collect wax or coffee beans, as everyone is always trying to grow garden or cocoa beans, and are desperate to get rid of their worthless cards. But I never knew the original game didn't have them! Will have to try a round without them.
Bohnanza is easily one of my favourite games! I've been playing for 10 years and it never gets old. I love how skeptical people are when I tell them it's a bean trading game, but everyone always loves it! I didn't know about the history though. Awesome video.
We play with exactly one expansion- High Bohn- and we only use it for the Cognac beans. Cognac beans have an interesting point progression, and we like the variety.
Hello, about que "looks" of the game I would recommend procuring the version made by a fellow who goes by the alias of Carthaginian (if I'm not mistaken), I believe you could find the files on BGG, it's still beans but with a more modern look and if you want something really special try the retheme by Beth Sobel with flowers instead of beans, great art in the herbaceous style. It doesn't hurt to mention that I believe one should only use these versions if already has the original version, but it is merely my opinion. On the topic of expansions and spin offs I can't recommend enough the Duel version. It's awesome, everybody I played with liked it better than the original, as a game, mechanic-wise I mean, obviously the original has that whole "group dynamic" thing that can add a lot of fun, but also sink the game. Well, thank you for the awesome video as per usual, all the best.
Good video! One similar game I'm surprised you never brought up is Pit. That's a classic that has people yelling for card trades as well. I think your tip for shortening the game is a good one. I have found it drags on a bit as well. But my primary issue with the game is that "negotiation" is one of those game mechanics that can quickly transcend the "game space" and start interacting with real life drama/politics. Are you a little annoyed by person 1? Well, no beans for you. Does your partner look sad over there? How about making an especially good deal with them. Everyone is begging for a deal, and when all is said and done, the way it played out can leave you feeling a little ruffled afterwards. With that said, I do think the game is fantastic, and my sister-in-law, who rarely wants to play games at all, LOVES "the bean game." It's her #1 choice. Too bad there aren't any other new negotiation games to expand her horizons with!
It's frankly shocking that in spite of Monopoly and Catan being massively successful there's been practically no games released in the last twenty years that center around trading cards between players to collect the sets you need.
Bohnanza is one of the favorite games of our board game group. It's a classic and we always have a great time playing it. We've introduced it to a ton of other people who all have enjoyed it. The social interaction is fun and it can be as friendly or as cut-throat as you want it to be. :) I agree that the game could use a serious art update. I honestly think it would help sales a ton as well because the ugly yellow box and had art are a real turn-off for many.
We played Bohnanza regularly in lunch break at uni, some days we would play saboteur or Machiavelli. The game was always lots of fun, we never got bored of it.
@@actualol It's a pretty fun game. There are 8 characters all with different abilities, You try build the most valuable city. every round you choose a character and try to make use if its abilities to grow your city. The game is played in order of character and their abilities help you succeed in your quest, but other players can screw you over big time too through the abilities of the character they have chosen that round.
I am one of those people who were turned of by the artwork of the game and I never had any intention to buy it, but then I won a free copy in the games they were giving out at BGG Con last November. We haven’t tried it yet and since you praise it so much in many of your videos, I decided to keep it in my collection, so we’ll certainly give it a go at some point. 🙂
Great game, great video! I hadn't seen that smaller box edition before. I knew about the rules revision that eliminated the Third field, but hadn't realized they shrunk the box too. Very nice.
I can only speak for the US edition but the current Amigo print run has the third field. There will also be a 25th anniversary addition released in the US early next year that will have a never before seen bean and some other cool stuff.
Thanks for the video Jon, I always read or hear about how Bohnanza is a classic but never thought of checking it out, now your video has me considering buying it, nice video as always
Great video Jon, some history and context and some in-depth analysis on a great game. Who is your B-roll camera (wo)man? Next up: The Werewolves of Miller's Hollow?
Hey Jon, what are your thoughts on the fact that the game's stuck around but its rules have changed twice (most recently in 2016)? Which rulesets have you played and do you miss the third bean field or did you ignore it?
I played this game first this past March so have never played had a 3rd field card in the box. Got it with expansions though. I'll used the 3 field mat for 3 player games
This is such a great video! I’m surprised it doesn’t have more likes. Love all of your content and I’m so excited to buy the 25th anniversary edition of this game because it’s just that fun.
great video, I would also like to recommend the dice version of Bohnanza, but it seems to have gone out of print and due to a specific type of stereotypical depiction might not comeback into print until Amigo decides to, redo the art. But if you can find it, and can look past the archaic stereotype it uses, it is a great game at heart.
I used to have this game and didn't "get" it; I think it was a little too complicated or "different" than what we were all used to back then. Thanks to this video I've bought it again to give it another go.
My roommate got this for me for my birthday back in March. We've probably played 50 games since then! Amazing game so glad it's getting back some notariety ALSO I even picked up the "Ladies and Gangsters" and "Princes and Pirates". Haven't gotten to play Ladies yet with the whole house
Hi Jon, I'd like to see a video of lords of Vegas. In our first game we didn't focus at all on the negotiation element and it would be good to see you elaborated on this in your inimitable style.
I'd say Kuhhandel (I believe it's Called 'You're bluffing' in English) is very similar to this - though a bit more open. It's another card trading game and it's really huge in European countries as well. Super cheap and a very entertaining night with mates.
Just wanted to note that your CC is drunk in job already which made me way too happy: "It was designed by Yuval Rosenberg -- As for other games by Over Rozenberg" "To become a patron, go to Patrias Macomb forward slash Excello.." To Excello then, I guess.
Ladies and Gangsters is a good variant. Ladies variant gives trading a double edged sword and plays into the luck aspect which some players love. Gangsters adds a solitaire version that is decent.
I have a group of friends that I've played "Beans" with for years now. We've added parts of expansions (can't deal with the mamas / babies thing), and even added a couple cards make things even more interesting. It's a great game! The only thing I'm afraid of is playing with new people becasue of all we've added!
Thanks for another great video. I would like to see your review on Eclipse 2nd edition, Pulsar 2849, ALIEN-Faith of the Nostromo, Power Grid and ULM. I did get this Bohnanza game a few weks ago on a sale. 😀
My family doesn't really like trading games. We play the variant listed in the rule book where you offer two cards to the next player, rather than trading. This makes it more of a hand management game and we have found that more non-gamers are willing to play this version. We'd bring this to raves and house-parties where it fit the non-sober audience better than the trading version.
100% correct about the look of this game holding it back. I’ve seen or read dozens of glowing reviews and think I’d adore the trading, but I never buy it because I can’t ever picture myself pulling a game this ugly out and showing it to people. I suspect a publisher could make suitcases of money with a gorgeous new edition.
I think this is your best video in a while. Really like this "looking at a classic game" bit. Would have liked to hear a little bit more about the game's history (one of the other commenters says the rules have changed more than once?), but otherwise great. Didn't know Uwe was a statistician! Been thinking about trying Bohnanza for a while but have been put off by the art. Might grab a copy now!
You absolutely do not need any Bohnanza expansions. I've picked up a couple at trades or flea market type sales at gaming conventions. At best, they add a little flavor to a game that doesn't need it. At worst, they ruin the experience by over complicating it. If you want to do a video on classics, you may want to look at Acquire and I'm the Boss. They are two games I recommend to people who think Monopoly is fun. Acquire is for the hotel/stock collecting fans. I'm the Boss is for the wheeling and dealing. Both games were made by Sid Sackson thirty(!) years apart. 1964 for Acquire and 1994 for I'm the Boss (originally title Kohle, Kiese, and Knete).
I think negotiation games are scarce because they put a player's fate in the hands of others. I'm really surprised this game is still being played, so it must be fun for some people. I don't mind playing it, so that makes it better than Uno at least (IMO).
To me, Bohnanza looks great (but not beautiful), and Sushi Go looks ugly. Huge difference in how nice it feels to have them on my table. (and an even bigger difference in how interesting they play, to Bohnanza's advantage) And I like your videos a lot, Jon.
What do you think about the reskin of it as Dahlias? It looks really pretty, but I kind of miss the absolute weirdness of the original. The barfing green bean is ridiculous, but also strange enough to bring my kids to the table.
I think the reason is that they've released so many expansions for it that it would be a huge undertaking to re-design all of them at the same time so they're compatible.
@@actualol True, but then you could have a streamlined "ultimate edition" that has the best expansions, premium components, etc. and sell it for a mint. Seems like a smart trend to jump on for a game that has that much staying power.
My first Bohnanza is indeed excellent. I always enjoyed High Bohn Plus (the plus part mainly). I thought the order cards were a really interesting addition that encourages you to sell or hold onto bean Fields longer or shorter than you might normally. Mixes it up a bit. The dice version is excellent as well, but the art is problematic unfortunately. Fantastic series whose expansions never really managed to capture the lightning in the bottle that the original release did.
set of 4 means you have 1 coin. At harvest time, keep 1, turn it over and put on the table in front of you (there's a coin on the back) then return the others to the discard pile. If your harvest pays off more coins, just keep that many cards, turned over of course.
Not gonna lie, I like trading and auction games. Guess I'm just fascinated by auctions after spending enough time on them in MMOs. Can I ask for a possible topic for a future video? I, personally, do love cards as a component, but my dad hates cards as a whole with passion(and, admittedly, a lot of us got into trouble at school for playing MtG/YGO/Pokémon TCG or similar things, so, I feel safe to say cards are still a bit stigmatized as a gambling symbol), so, is it possible to get a list of beginner-friendly games that don't utilise cards? Because I'm afraid my knowledge on the subject is limited to Carcassonne and Azul(also roll-and-writes such as Railroad Ink, but these are a terrible entry to the hobby where you INTERACT WITH PEOPLE), and I refuse to believe it really is all that exists for my specific needs.
Let me know what other modern classic games you'd like me to make a video like this for.
7 Wonders!
*Sleuth*. You've mentioned it in one of your videos. but I don't believe you've given it a proper video
Definitely keep going with the lesser-known or less popular ones in today's audience. Small card games specifically are so fun to learn about
One you mentioned in this review, Civilization. I finally got to play it two years ago. One of my four 10/10s after rating over 500 games at BGG.
Race for the Galaxy

Haha! I'm guessing you're British and of a certain age 😂 I also had hundreds.
@@actualol welsh from an age of green silk and tamgochi lol
I think I like the Duel rules better. So much so that I tried to force them into a three player game but it wasn’t very smooth
Wait, what??? In the last 20 years, there hasn't been a single game that utilizes trading cards that's worth mentioning? I find that hard to believe.
What version of Bohnanza is this? I’d love to get a copy in a small box like this one :)
Is there any reason it's not gotten new artwork or some re-release? Perhaps contact them?
I think the reason is that they've released so many expansions for it that it would be a huge undertaking to re-design all of them at the same time so they're compatible.
@@actualol True, but then you could have a streamlined "ultimate edition" that has the best expansions, premium components, etc. and sell it for a mint. Seems like a smart trend to jump on for a game that has that much staying power.
Space beans is a good drafting game
Do not know of many similar games so yea it could well be the best...
Bit confused how you put coins aside. Does a set of 4 mean you have 4 coins, or a set of 4 means you have 1 coin?
set of 4 means you have 1 coin. At harvest time, keep 1, turn it over and put on the table in front of you (there's a coin on the back) then return the others to the discard pile. If your harvest pays off more coins, just keep that many cards, turned over of course.
I really like the 90's exaggerated, cartoonish and silly art style.
One of Uwe's finest games, along with a feast for Odin, Nusfjord and nothing else.
Nothing else. Don't you dare mention any farming game.
The two-player Bohnanza: The Duel is pretty good to okay. None of the expansions are worth your time.
wait what, you only lay down two cards? Weve always put down three :S And where is the third field? We can purchase a third field for 4 coins :)
Pretty sure it's only two 😬 As for the third field, I just didn't feel the need to mention it but I do play with it.
