In MPs' defences, attending parliament is now a relatively small part of their job. Since the 1980s and the growth of Parliament's other duties, most MPs have roles in committees, or some ministerial position (roughly 100). Most MPs attend a Commons once or twice a week, and only for a few hours. Remember also, a lot of them return to their local constituency for constituency work often, so they physically cannot be in London. I work in the Civil Service, i've briefly had to interact with Committees in Westminster, most MPs are VERY busy people.

They're MPs, they're too busy with their 2nd jobs. Half of them have never turned up to their own constituency so why do people expect them to turn up in parliament
It's a wonderful double-sided cudgel to beat MPs with. If they're attending sessions in Parliament, complain they're not spending time meeting their local constituents; if they're present locally, complain they're not spending time in Parliament. In all honesty, unless a session had a policy vote or something at the end of it, rather than just an observance of a day, I'd ask myself as an MP whether it was essential for me to attend it, either.
Well done Dawn! I don't agree with her on 99% of issues, but her message here was very diplomatic. The turn out in parliment shows how much politicians think of men, it is disgusting
This is typical. I bet a chunk of the people that didn't turn up complained that "why is there and international Womens day and not an International Mens day". This was the same thing that happened in a job I once did. No one bothered to turn up and it was all arranged by women because none of the complaining men took charge.
Mens rights need to include freedom from conscription and indentured labour. It also should include parental rights and paternity leave to be a part of raising their children. Mens rights should always work had in had with women's rights and feminism. The enemy of both is the same societal and systemic issues that limit both.
oh no no no, can't have that, that'd be *woke socialism* or something. Can't do anything for ordinary people these days without being called a Bolshevik.
I was at my local library today. Big display saying “Celebrate Mensday!” Then I looked at the books on display. With one exception, every single book was about being a black man, or a gay man, or a black gay man.
I think it's because there's not many books about non gay or non black men in terms of mental health or struggling with your own feelings as the main theme. Because we don't talk about it enough.
0:50 Beautifully put. We're all human beings and we should just show up for each other. The issue isn't men vs women, or furthermore it's not black/brown vs white, or gay vs straight. It's the people who want to harm others vs the people who want others to live happy lives. Get that through your heads.
Interesting that you put the clip of Dawn Butler asking where all the Conservatives were for this debate. If you look back on previous IMD debates (eg Nov 2023) you will see that the Labour benches are empty and nearly all the speakers were Conservatives. This is partly because if your party is small, far more have a front-bench role. This is a backbench debate, so there are bound to be more government party people as there are far more of them.
I think it's a real shame, given there was barely anyone on **either** side of the house, for her to begin with stupid partisan attacks: "There aren't many labour MPs here today are there mister speaker?" Look at your own benches too!! This was an opportunity for those present to come together across the aisle on a topic they've made the effort to turn up for in spite of the absence of many. Why begin this way?
sitting here in the dark and seeing layer upon layer of green empty benche just hurts - the benches were full for gaza - pensioners - women - asylum seekers - russia / ukraine - but not men - why?

She mentioned male suicide rates, cancer rates, and mortality rates. Poor mental health is an issue that deserves highlighting as part of men’s day. And yes, it affects men directly but she’s not wrong to mention that it affects others too. just remember the ones who shout about it in the media and then dont turn up here when it matters , dont vote for them , most importantly email them why you wont be voting for them . encourage others to do the same , if enough do it to threaten their chance of winning they will change because they want the power . people have to remember some people dont want change , you cannot win votes by moaning about a problem once it has been solved .

this is such a non issue at the end of the day its just a thursday just go to work and do your job nobody cares
just remember the ones who shout about it in the media and then dont turn up here when it matters , dont vote for them , most importantly email them why you wont be voting for them . encourage others to do the same , if enough do it to threaten their chance of winning they will change because they want the power . people have to remember some people dont want change , you cannot win votes by moaning about a problem once it has been solved .
Calm Down Dear!
It’s only a token and an opportunity to sell “Happy Men’s Day” merchandise.
Not sure not turning up to a debate means they destroy our lives
Bear in mind, 59% of the House of Commons are men. So in this case they’re not even showing up to represent themselves.
Where are Nigel and Richard? …Ava?
Pub 🍻
Keir Starmer arrived: All right. Let’s see what this about…
*(Sees House of commons empty)*
Where the f**k is everyone?…
Business as usual I see...
Boyz II Men
I can't speak for British statistics, but 3 out of 4 homeless people in Denmark are men. That's not a coincidence.
House of Commons is a joke they all go on like kids and the fact Keith starmer laughs at serious issues is really concerning it must be nice to be able to say fuck it I’m not going to work today without consequence. The importance of their job roles and the way they conduct themselves is pathetic bunch of clowns
genuinely disgusting speech. she spoke about incels (meaning involuntarily celibate men) as if they were vermin. rather than just men who are involuntarily celibate. bloody hell. obviously used 6 minutes as a cudgel for her activism. didnt raise ones inequality effecting men, and berated men, not to mention raised only problems committed against women. i have a profound dislike of people who use a forum and delivery like that in such a backhanded spiteful way
Where did she do this? All I heard was mental health discussion, prostate cancer discussion and trying to help men get out of the “incel” hole
An MPs job is not merely to attend Parliament... they have other committees and select committees to attend and of course constituency work... I'm not saying that all those who didn't attend were doing these things... I mean the Swivel Eyed Loon and Dicey Ticey were probably in a witheredspoons... but speaking for my own MP he was with me today at the the opening of a new pharmacy... We as local councillors had invited him along well over a month ago and he had this in his diary
International Men's Day was Tuesday 19th November. Not today. It was just this video that was posted today.
It's manatee apreciation month.
Probably at the free bar and cafe
Honestly expected the Fascists to show up for this one to try and grift some votes.

So this lady who spoke in an empty house for International Men's Day couldn't talk about men's issues for 7 minutes without saying that women's issues were more important.
Maybe because when people talk about men’s issues they are label anti women and misogynists and dismissed away sadly.
Sociologically womens issues are the more pressing matter though.
I know people like you find the truth uncomfortable, but sometimes the truth hurts.
Tf are you on about? Literally women showed up to debate the issue, you're a bit mental, aren't you?
You say that while watching a video of the House of Commons designating a day for International Men’s Day. Secondly, often when people bring up men’s issues it’s for the purpose of shutting down women’s issues
@@icravedeath.1200 see what I mean. What issues are you referring to? Both sexes have massive issues. For guys it suicide, violence, mental health, homelessness, crime. Pretty big areas.
@@arbbr9397 exactly, that's what I was going to say.
People who do stuff like that are cowards who don't want to actually bother in the relevant intersectional feminist thought about how the ways women are oppressed harm everyone, because I guess self reflective deeper thought is scary to them.
What the F is this international men's day? Never even heard of it.
I think that's because of the way society promotes the male gender. Dawn explained it well. We celebrate Father's day so should also show appreciation for all men who have a positive impact on our lives.
@@drcommonsense1i second this idea, we should also use it as a learning opportunity to teach men about how stuff that harms women harms them too (misogyny and patriarchy, you know, intersectional feminist topics).
Completely disagree@@icravedeath.1200. You've just immediately turned international men's day into international women's day. On international women's day we lift women up and acknowledge all the wonderful achievements made by women. Do the same for men.
Such a woman thing to get mad no one shoeed up for mens day.
It's funny when a lot of men complain that they have to honour Women's Day and think there is no Men's Day.
It was exactly the same when Andrew Bridgen was reporting on excess deaths !!!... Now if it was to award a pay increase for themselves...it would be packed to the rafters...Anyway if we all treated people with respect we wouldn't need a day for anyone...We need 365 days a year for humanity.
Repent…. Your messiah is almost here!!! ✝️🙏🏼
I'll wait another 2000 year for my spaghetti monster thank you

What a load of shit
only if it was a TRANS day, it would have been a full house
Well, the following day - 20th November - was Trans Day of Rememberance. Could you show me how full the House was for it?
LMAO nobody gives a fuck about international men’s day
Exactly, we should be using the day for useful things, like educating people on the patriarchy and misogyny.
You know, things that probably harm men too, making it actually relevant for the occasion.
Right wing guys who obsess over mens rights, look how much your party gives a shit! You can count the number of Tories there on one hand!
This is what we pay for...empty
MPs do FAR more than just sitting in Parliament. A fraction of their time is devoted to it, they're busy working in select or general committees, doing constituency work or in party engagements. MPs are very busy people...
