There are a handful of exceptions beyond the debut, eponymous RUSH (where Neil wasn't even a member yet), but it's >90% true. A few songs on Fly By Night, Lessons on 2112 was written by Alex Lifeson, Tears on 2112, Cinderella Man on AFTK and Different Strings on Permanent Waves were written by Geddy. And you have the 3 or 4 songs where the lyrics were by Peart and Pye Dubois (like Tom Sawyer, Force Ten, Between Sun & Moon, Test for Echo). Not taking anything away from Neil's BODY of incredible lyric writing & being the lyrical workhorse!
Neil would write the lyrics and he and Geddy would tweak them because Geddy wanted to be able to get behind the message so he could sing with a complete buy in to the message. Not sure how often this happened but it was with some regularity. Total professionals.
Neil joined the band after the first album and wrote the lyrics starting with Fly Ny Night. Their BODY of work is second to none. They absolutely kill this song live back in the day.
This is the proggiest Rush gets. It was so ambitious and some songs so taxing that they purposely eased off for their next albums. I remember seeing this in NYC. They did Cygnus X-1, Book 1 and went right into this, playing the whole piece. It was AMAZING!

There are songs like this from my much younger days that still cause waves of nostalgia to come over me (that out of body / past longing experience you mention). Thanks for this reaction...appreciate hearing the song and your thoughts. Neil spent so much of his time reading books. He read a lot of philosophy so the messages in his lyrics are sometimes universal and end up being incredibly relevant for today's issues.
I really enjoyed your review. I'm definitely Team "Book 2," too. "Book 2" is the ultimate "ant vs. grasshopper" rock tale, living for the moment, versus planning for the future. Your BODY is in that place right now. I truly believe that's the draw for you, why the song evokes a familiarity, the feeling of going home. BTW, Neil was the one who wrote the lyrics for most of Rush's songs. Great review!
Man he is a genius huh?? I love the lyrics I always connect so deeply with them. This was such a great listen... I had a blast with it. I definitely prefer this one but I enjoyed both. Thank you for watching! 😊

Another one of their masterpieces! This whole album is perfection. ❤ Neil was the one who wrote the majority of the lyrics. He was an avid reader. Cheers 🇨🇦
@@L33Reacts Three geniuses in one band! Neil has also written a number of books himself. He was an avid motorcyclist and would ride between shows. A number of his books were about his travels. I have read one and it was excellent. Cheers
One of my favorite RUSH songs. Not knowing much about drumming I'm still very aware of theme and variation in the percussion. Love the dissonant guitar chords, and the bass has so much BODY!
I'm familiar with all of Rush's body of work, but this was the first Rush LP (when those were a thing) I ever heard and the first rock album I ever bought.
Alex: The problem with Hemispheres was that we were really lost in direction sometimes. It was all so difficult - even the keys we were playing in. It was written in a key that was very difficult for Geddy to sing, in a really high register, the whole record ... I still think that La Villa Strangiato is one of the best things we’ve ever done. But we came out of that record feeling that we were becoming a bit formulaic. It was time to move on. Geddy: There were a lot of songs that were a lot more difficult to sing than I imagined ... It’s one thing to sit down with a guitar, thinking, ‘OK, that’s going to work like that.’ But once you finish it and sing it out, you go, ‘Fuck, this is high!’ This whole record really pushed me into the upper register ... It was even hard to mix. It really took a chunk out of us. The title track (Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres) was another side-long piece. It was in a sense a different version of 2112. The notes were different, the story was different, but structurally we started feeling that we were repeating ourselves. So we thought, this isn’t healthy for us. We’ve got to break out of that. We needed a new direction, and we found it with Permanent Waves…
In an impressive body of work this may be their crowning achievement as far as technical prowess and difficulty go's. Hemispheres was a beast for them to produce and perform as they were at the limits of their ability as musicians at the time, so much so that they vowed to never again make an album so difficult and in a sense their following record Permanent Waves was their way of unwinding and getting back to playing for fun. 😊
A lot of drummers make the mistake of playing it down, counting it through, you need to work the theme and not think it through. Flow. React. Play a lot of music (massive variety) so rhythmic timing and time changes are down pat until anything you play is simply a reaction sourcing all the things you have in your arsenal.
The body of this the fact that Neil Peart wrote most of the lyrics. yeah a drummer who wrote best selling books and played in the best band ever. Keep going dude, we love you
Literally music of the gods Don't need to use the word "body" because no one could leave in the middle of one of Rush's greatest masterpieces. congrats on your very hard fought success of being clean for 3 years. I'm proud of you. Hemispheres was my first concert ever, up in Saginaw, Mi in the winter of 1979. I was in 9th grade and my parents almost stopped me from going. It is my all time favorite Rush album, and it's between Hemispheres and Close to the Edge (Yes) for my all time, all time favorite album. I guess that #1 spot really depends on my mood, but it's between those 2 albums by a wide margin
In the body of Cygnus Book I the traveler entered the black hole (Cygnus X-1) in his ship the Rocinante (the name of Don Quixote’s horse - like Don Quixote, Rocinante is awkward, past his prime, and engaged in a task beyond his capacities) and the traveler’s body was destroyed and "every nerve was torn apart".

Well first of all I'm 64 years old I've been listening to Rush for over 40 years now and they have never let me down now you did want me to save body. So now let's get on to the lyrics it is Neil Peart that does all the lyrics to all their songs and I do mean all the songs so for 40 years it's Ben Neil Peart that does all the lyrics
It's easy to marvel at their musicianship... but then think about actually creating this song and then being able to record this and then play it live??? I mean it's just insane
This is a seriously beefy slice of Rush music. It flows about the same as "2112", but the body of it is substantially more proggy and to me it *feels* longer. But it's packed with action. You get "the Alex Lifeson chord" at the beginning, lots of time changes, stop-start dynamics, wailing banshee vocals (Robert Plant was Geddy's main early influence), analog synths, a space-y interlude, lots of sci-fi/fantasy lyrical mumbo jumbo from Neil, and an acoustic denouement borrowed from "Pigs on the Wing Pt 2." To put this out in 1978 -- when prog was coming under serious attack -- was pretty daring, although side 2 provides a good counterpoint in that it points the way toward the shorter, punchier music on the next couple albums. There's no Book 3, although the longer songs on Permanent Waves ("Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science") capture some of the spirit of "Hemispheres". And yes, this was a bitch for them to play live. They never played the whole thing again after the '78 tour. If you hear bootlegs from that or the '79 tours you can hear the toll it was taking on Geddy's voice.
Most Rush fans venerate 2112 as the ultimate Rush epic, but I think Hemispheres is more musically and intellectually refined (both are great, obviously). It's a more mature composition: you already noted the inventive riffs and the more unusual chords Alex is employing here. I also believe this is just produced better - the bass and especially the drums SOUND better (not that they are necessarily played better, but the quality of the sound is superior). Lyrically, whereas 2112 is more socio-political and undeniably cool, Hemispheres is more internal, more overtly philosophical. Indeed, the Dionysian/Apollonian dichotomy was originally proposed/analyzed by Nietzsche in his 1872 work, "The Birth of Tragedy" (the concept was elaborated on later by other thinkers). Nietzsche, of course, was an intellectual figure that Peart admired in his youth (but regrettably discarded later). Despite the very genuine emotional aspects of Hemispheres (Geddy sings with great pathos throughout), the dense allegorical/metaphorical lyrical content may have hampered its appeal, somewhat, which is sad though hardly surprising. It's a tour de force, though, no matter how you slice it. The band was firing on all cylinders.
Yeah you can tell these guys are top of their game on this track. Everything sounds great, everyone is in sync, and every note has a purpose. The lyrics peer deep into the human mind and asks why?

There's no Book 3, although the longer songs on Permanent Waves ("Jacob's Ladder" and "Natural Science") capture some of the spirit of "Hemispheres". And yes, this was a bitch for them to play live. They never played the whole thing again after the '78 tour. If you hear bootlegs from that or the '79 tours you can hear the toll it was taking on Geddy's voice.
Body, buddy and lyrics by Peart😊❤
And hahah everyone at the Rush concerts are air drumming hahshs
Listen to Subdivisions Snake and Arrows Tour Live!
I already did subdivisions but I don't know if It was that tour. I think it was live in Dallas. It was awesome! It's in the rush Playlist.
Alex & Geddy write the music. Neil wrote the majority of the lyrics, apart from occasional one-offs here & there by both Alex & Geddy.
It's a shame he discarded Nietzche. His was a wonderful mind. So many good questions asked by that man.
Geddy does have some input, since he has to sing, but Neil is the writer.
Bobby😂
Body in the comment. 🤣

@@L33Reacts I'll look for it, I get notifications too and I missed La Villa Strangiato
@@L33Reacts glad you liked it
How’s your dad doing buddy? I hope he’s out of the hospital
He's doing a lot better Thank-you for asking. He Is out of the hospital and had a stint put in. He may be my step dad but I still love him
@@L33Reacts my father died when he was 65 and I was in my early 30s. He actually got a heart transplant when he was 55 and at that point his heart was only at 13%. Whether he’s your stepfather or your biological father, he still your dad. Treasure the time you have with him. I wish nothing but the best for you and your entire family.
@jimtatro6550 I am sorry to hear that Jim. I lost my dad when I was 9. It absolutely destroyed my life and I still miss him dearly to this day. My biggest wish in life would be to spend 10 minutes with again. Introduce him to his granddaughter. I wish man... but all I can do is try and be a great dad just like he was and hopefully make him proud. Sorry, I guess I needed to get that out. 😅
@jimtatro6550 that means the world to me Jim thank you very much 😊

Been a fan sinceI shoplifted a copy of Fly By Night when I was 12 yo in 1974. Youve done a bunch of Rush tunes now, and you said you’re pretty sure Geddy is the wordsmith? Shame on you. Little less vaping and more reading of liner notes 📝 please.
Neil Peart wrote the lyrics most of the time. He’s not called the Professor just because he’s a master percussionist. Get back on those drums, it’s a great purpose with a worthy goal.
Talking during the song while Geddy is singing indicates you aren't really listening. 😢 it is also incredibly disrespectful.
I have to talk or there is no video lol
@@L33Reacts you can pause anytime if you have something to say. Talking over the music is just not what I prefer from reactors.
Well, that's how things are done here. Pausing the song ruins it.
@@L33Reacts good luck with that approach 🙄 I won't be back.
👋
Cant even appreciate because you are talking over it sooooooooooooooo much.................
Go listen to the song then. This is a *reaction* video.
Body. You aren’t close to Peking. Try listening to a Rick Beato breakdown of ayny great song. Continue working and being creative. You can improve until you lose your mind or your life.
