- Dan got himself a new restoration project! What do you reckon? It's a 1963 Vw Beetle that has been in the garage for 30 years and in its day was an 80's show car. Time hasn't been kind to the old girl and with the tonnes of filler and customisations done to it 40 years ago means it's going to take quite a bit to bring her back around, Is it worth it? Is it too far gone?

Just a bit of history, my dad bought her in 1972 for £278, he gave her to me in 1974 when I passed my test.
So many memories. Taking us on our honeymoon, ferrying our babies. They always slept so well in her...the engine noise. So yes, sad to say goodbye to her but I did promise her that you would do your best to save her. I would love to see you do it. Sorry about all the work involved and about all the filler..Dianne
Dianne! I will do my utmost I promise. The work doesn’t worry me at all (mostly) and neither does the filler! If you see me complaining it’s nothing personal at all, things have just been done differently in the past and folks didn’t have the parts and tools available to them all those years ago that we do now.
Going to have to throw some hours at it, but I'm happy to watch you restore it!

This reminds me of all the shit I had to dig out of my bay window, newspaper silicone, aluminium glued over rust, I don’t think many people cared much back then.
You're right, back then the cars weren't as desirable and they didn't really have the parts at their disposal that we have now.
Keep us updated all the way, looking forward to this! I’m a little in to my 72 late beetle restoration doing it all myself. Personally I’d go all out but do it yourself
The plan is to do it all, and low cost too. I think all out is going to be the way

@@hayburnertv I literally just bought a '63 this past Monday, an incredible deal on a perfectly restored blue Beetle. I think that's why YT fed me your channel - all I have to do is hop in & enjoy. You now have the thrill of resurrecting a sad orphan. 😀
Bug jam late eighties and early nineties have a lot to answer for lol, would love to see a "budget" rebuild, ending with taking the previous owner for a drive!
This one is going to be a budget build for sure. I think Dan's aim is around the £2k area. Taking it to the previous owners to see would be a nice touch, I know the family have some great memories with the car!
Would be cool to find some pictures of it back in the day!

Hey dude. This is going to be a good restoration series. I have seen alot worse restored including my early Bay bus. She wasn't for the faint hearted but i couldn't let her go and took me 4 years to do and theres little things need doing even today ha. With your bug though, definitely go all out with restoring. Split the pan from body etc. Time consuming yes. Expensive yes but it will be worth it in the end and you know exactly what's what inside and out. Money wise, Rome wasn't built in a day and spend when you can. That's what i did and will do again with a Beetle in the future to add. . Look forward to the next video 🤙.

It will be pretty budget, it's going to need a bit so I'll need to spend a bit but I need to keep it sensible for sure!
It’s still doable ! Mike f n garage performed surgery on a ‘54 and did beautifully.

Would love to see it restored,but its going to be a huge commitment,would be a great series for me to follow as its in exactly the sort of state i can only afford to buy in,i will leave you to scratch heads and crunch the numbers,good luck either way.
That's exactly why I want to build it, to show that it is possible to buy them in this state and end up with a nice car for those of us that can't just go out and buy one

That is pretty much what I'm thinking. I love the 70's/80's LA Cal Style and that is probably the direction I'll be going with this one
Yes I'd like to see you continue with it, safety glasses and gloves and maybe a filter mask when grinding filler ?

Possibly! Dan already has a Baja project though, so I think he wants to go full fender on this one
Keep your money for fuel. Rat rod it. Cut out bad floor bits. Weld it all together never to be separated again. Put a good power plant in it. Tall mud and snow tyres. Cut back wings. Blow it over with rhino coat. Lace roof. Make up front panel for zero. It’s just a blaster. Beater parts getter. Fun in the mud and snow. It was custom before. Don’t waste your money and time on a resto. You can buy them cheaper. But that me. Good luck.

It's OK to customise but this is a bodge hats off to you all get it back to period the original colour looks like Garnet or Indian red
Thanks Stephen! Original colour for this one is Ruby, the darker Garnet looking red that you can see isn't the original red either!

As for splitting the body from the pan, definitely. No way of doing it properly otherwise.
I already have a Baja project, so this one will be a full fender. But maybe a Baja project in the future!

Restore it to its full custom glory. Only a fool would try to restore it to original.
It won't be original like concours perfection, more so that it will have the right panels and things like that. But I am also a bit of a fool too!

Personally I would make the car solid and try and get back to it's original form eg correct body parts. Maybe do a ratty patina look then spend time/money on the engine rather than attempting to go balls out trying to make it look showroom fresh which would cost a fortune. Yes I'm from the same era and we did tend to butcher our vehicles in an attempt to be different. These days just driving a standard bug is different because all modern cars are so bland. PEACE. ✌
Yeah I think we are on the same page. Getting the pan and body back to standard and solid is the first goal

This vid is too cringey to enjoy. Every time he's cutting/pulling off fibreglass with no gloves, or cutting into the car with no eye protection is mucho bad practice. I've learnt the hard way and wasted hours up the hospital, so whenever I see stuff like this It's like a horror flick , waiting for the blood to start spurting..
Hey Grant, thanks for the feedback. I will admit that years of wrenching in the garage have left me with a lot of bad habits. I am new to being in front of the camera and have lessons to learn there still but I am making more of an effort with trying to break those habits! I definitely don't claim to be one to copy though!
